20 Years Ago Today A Reminder Of Spurs’ Dark Past

By The Boy -

1999. Before Tottenham Hotspur were saved by the risen bookkeep, Daniel ‘‘You know what this place is missing? Food courts!’ Levy’.

Shirt out. Marks and Spencer vest beneath. Ball at his feet. Drops a shoulder. Feints, Dink. Ball in the onion bag. Halcyon days.

1999 is a stark reminder to those that bandy the word ‘compete’ about in 2019.

Competing isn’t registering, turning up and having a go – subject to other more financially lucrative options.

Competing is doing your bloody best to win.

History remembers winners. Everyone else lost.

Tottenham didn’t win the FA Cup in 1999. However they did win the League Cup.

That’s right, they were alive and kicking in not one, but two domestic competitions in the same season.

It must have been dream. No more cheese for me this weekend.

?They flutter behind you your possible pasts
Some bright-eyed and crazy, some frightened and lost…

Barnsley (4-4-2):- T. Bullock; Eaden, De Leeuw, Tinkler, Morgan; Moses, Blackmore ( sub M. Bullock, 75) Mc Clare ( sub Van Der Laan, 66), Jones; Dyer ( sub Sheron, 85 ), Hignett

Spurs (4-4-2):- Walker; Carr, Vega, Campbell, Taricco; Anderton, Freund, Sherwood, Ginola ( sub Sinton, 89 ); Ferdinand (sub Iversen, 81 ), Armstrong

Only the league position is better, but before getting too excited about that and the magical powers of ENIC and Levy, let’s not forget it took almost 20 years to get here.

And currently it’s only because Levy lucked out on a manager that can do what he does without being backed…

Spot on, the Ropey is a second rate tournament that drains the resources of the clubs involved. If you can win it easily then fair enough but if it impacts on anything domestically just sack it, not worth the hassle.

The classic example of the real merit of the Ropey is Sevilla: never win anything in Spain, come 5th or 6th most years and win the Ropey FIVE times in about a dozen years. A few times they’ve got into the Cl during this trophy winning (Ropey winning!)era for them and haven’t progressed beyond QF (usually fail to get that far!) when they appear in the CL.

We win the same trophy under Sugar as under ENIC ONLY 9 years before.

When you look at our owners over the last 20-30 years and the way the club has been run on such a mediocre values, it does make you wonder how so many fans still turn up in such great numbers.

The fans have been mugged off for decades now…

Under Abramovic Chavs have become a refuge for many mercenaries.

Whatever we thought of Lampard and Terry (not much), they gave the squad a sense of identity as long serving first team players and captains. Now this element has gone, the hire and fire managers, pay huge win bonuses approach has led to dysfunction and a lack of direction when things get a bit difficult. All fairly straightforward…

In two words: player power
The main protagonists are so close to Abramovic that when they don’t like the manager, they’ll down tools until he’s gone. Willians childish and unprofessional behaviour after the cup win under Conte was a window to the dressing room. It’s been like this for many years, since the Shevchneko signing, through to the return of Drogba, the pandering to a narcissistic captain (non playing but lifting the cup in full kit, being subbed in the 26th minute of his last haircut me game) to the sanctioning of high profile moves to rival clubs (cech, matic)
Rotten to the core, but thankfully when Abramovic goes it’ll tumble to the ground like a house of cards.

Wow, the contempt towards fans is unbelievable. Liked the fact (& please correct me if I’m wrong) that they told whl season ticket holders they had to buy them at Wembley last year or lose them. They then lie about when it will be built. Love the line about (paraphrased) “we would have loved to allow fans to come watch games in a unfinished stadium, but we weren’t allowed do to safty concerns” dont hear anything about reduced ticket prices being introduced at the new stadium cause fans might have to step over some split concrete in the beer fine. What a farce

At a meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust on Tuesday, Levy said “with a debt of £637m, subject to reasonable assumption on interest rates, the net spend on players would not be affected.”

Enic’s net spend on players since 2008-09 season . . . . . £15.25m, lowest in the premier league.
