Common sense and reason are always in short supply with the Flat Earthers, so this news will inevitably trigger a series be a ‘yeah but e x p l a n a t i o n s’ …

Yesterday. RB Leipzig who are currently sitting third in the Bundesliga hired Paul ‘Mitch’ Mitchell.

Among the players signed by Spurs whilst Mitchell was in charge of recruitment at The Lane were Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama, Son Heung-Min, Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer.

I joked to Gladys that I couldn’t believe that he wasn’t snapped up by a big side like Derby County. Her response was basically that if anyone thought the notice period of 16 months was funny then the caveat that he couldn’t work in England for a further period would cause laughter that could be life threatening.

On a less amusing, in fact quite cheerless note one has to ask the question, ‘if transfer activity at Tottenham Hotspur is such an affable decision by committee business, how come anyone exiting the fold is so severely dealt with in terms of not just notice periods but NDA’s?

‘Nothing too see here, better off without him’ will come the cry.

If any news breaks on when the latest signing Moura is fit enough to kick a ball, this blog will bring it to you in a timely manner.

Mitchell resigned because we didn’t but Batshuayi. Who cost 31m + 130k pw for 5 years. So, a 60m+ commitment. Clearly both of them a big loss.

Wise head on his shoulders, always ask for more money when your flying high. He knows how much additional cash this cup run has made for the club.
I remember a few years ago hearing something from Phill Brown when he became Southend manager, he said the average wage for a manager in L2 was about £50k a year.
We could have done without the replay but its fair play to them, hope the money is invested properly

In all seriousness Mitchell was hired to do some pretty technical scouting – he’ll have been privy to who Spurs were scouting and why so it’s only natural that Spurs should want to protect this information to get out into the public domain or into the hands of our competitors. I’m not sure it’s so much a question of not wanting the truth to get out about deals that didn’t happen but more to do with deals that Spurs may be interested about in the future.

    • Willy Juice February 7, 2018 at 3:21 pm

No point putting kwp on the left side. It was unbearable to watch last time. If he’s playing stick him on the right.

      • gloster1861 February 7, 2018 at 3:25 pm

Agreed. He’s a stopgap on the left and he gets criticized for that when its a squad weakness.

  • SpurAndy 🍒π February 7, 2018 at 3:09 pm

Assume the notice period and NDA’s were in the contract Mitchell signed when he joined so if he wasn’t happy about it why did he sign? Not saying its completely acceptable but don’t have that much sympathy for him if he was aware.

    • Harry Hotspur February 7, 2018 at 3:18 pm

      An incredibly narrow view, Andy.

People sign stuff that isn’t perfect in order to get things underway. When you go into a venture, it is perfectly normal not to dwell upon the doomsday scenario. Especially if you have self belief.

          • The Man in The Middle February 7, 2018 at 3:22 pm

I was not aware of that rule either, although it makes sense i wonder how it relates to a player returning from long term injury.

            • gloster1861 February 7, 2018 at 3:33 pm

That player would still be a registered Spurs player.

              • The Man in The Middle February 7, 2018 at 3:44 pm

So the rule relates to regd players and not Squad players named for the competition then.

                • MysteriousStranger February 7, 2018 at 4:07 pm

He is ineligible because he was not registered, correct. He didn’t have to be in the match day squad, but he had to be a registered Spurs player before the first game between the two clubs – he wasn’t.

  • TheCincinnatiYid February 7, 2018 at 2:36 pm

Seen too many Spurs Cup performances to hope for double figures or even a sound tonking. Harry won’t start, methinks, so goals will be as scarce as hen’s teeth. If we beat then 2 nil I will be greatly relieved. And its not beyond imagining that we could lose 0-1. Or lose on penalties–with Arsenal looming. Wouldn’t that be swell?

    • gloster1861 February 7, 2018 at 2:43 pm

Worst outcome purely IMHO is extra time and penalties. Really do not need the emotional stress for the squad draining us before the early k.o. on Saturday.

      Nice and calm please.

Losing, and injuries to first team players are my biggest fear for tonights game.

For Newport this is a monumental game and to top it off its at Wembley. We need to give them and the competition the right level of respect

        • The Man in The Middle February 7, 2018 at 2:59 pm

Newport County will be so far out of their depth, the wide open spaces of Wembley will allow us to show our class.

  • TheCincinnatiYid February 7, 2018 at 2:29 pm

So its probable Mitchell left because he couldn’t stand Levy’s sick way of negotiating. Probable bad blood in that Spurs held Mitchell to his non-comp agreement for the whole term. Could also be some valuable info in that cranium of his. Such becomes less valuable with age, unlike good Scotch or Bourbon.
Given Spurs devotion to the seconds rack and the bargain table, its inevitable that we will land more N’Jies and N’Koudoos than Tobys and Deles (mentioned first in the cursory Mitchell resume, for some reason–is Harry having a change of heart here?).

Spurs method is not unlike guys who invest in business startups. You never know whether the product will take off or the entrepreneur can make the switch from salesman to manager. Or has some fatal flaw you didn’t notice in the vetting process. Many more flops than successes. But one success covers the investment in a number of flops. That’s where Spurs are as well. A good starting eleven and some reasonable backups. The stuff of what champions and potholders are made? Not quite. But I have enjoyed the Poch era much more than those of Redschnapps, AVB, Dim Tim and a host of others.

Maybe no really first rate manager would work for Levy. Can you imagine Sir Alex putting up with his bull shit? Scary and sad thought. Its probably true.

You’re probably right–but what I was trying to say is that you can’t hit the gong every time you swing the mallet–especially since our mallet is a little underweight.

    • King Leer February 7, 2018 at 3:04 pm

I hope Mitchell’s NDA expires at some point as it would be great to know who he actually put in front of Levy…and who got signed. I believe Mitchell arrived in time for the December 2014 window but I wonder if he was under a ‘transfer embargo’ from Southampton (no idea). He then resigned and was sent on gardening leave after the Summer ‘16 window. So potentially he had a hand in 3 windows.

    • mattspurs February 7, 2018 at 3:28 pm

According to Poch’s book Mitchell became exasperated with Levy over his refusal to pay (Batshuyai?) £130k a week and felt that to attract the best players we had to pay more.

    Who scouted Lucas Moura?
    Was it you, Steve Hitchen…?

Moura was surplus to requirements at PSG. He was offered to us at the same time as Aurier albeit for double the price we paid for him recently. It was an opportunity to sign someone with a bit of pedigree. Ergo, he wasn’t scouted, particularly. This is based on what I have read in the form of ITK and other articles.

    • gus February 7, 2018 at 2:16 pm

Poch didnt want Moura. We signed him 1) as a punt because his price seemed fair and could potentially rise or at least hold his value. 2) As with Aurier, Levy is keen to do business with PSG as it is a route to a money bags club who may potentially pay big money for our best and brightest. I believe these were ‘strategic’ signings not 100% aligned to what our manager wanted.

The import of the blog are three simple words:

      “We’ll never know”.

Never know why or who wanted Sissoko. Or Nkoudou, Njie, maybe Moura.

The one thing Levy DOES pay for is secrecy.

      • gloster1861 February 7, 2018 at 1:59 pm

                I hope so T, sorry Tony 🙂

I obviously, as a spurs supporter, want him to be a massive player for us. The fact I dont think Poch necessarily wanted him was more a comment on THFC ‘scouting’ and recruitment policies in the context of HH’s comments on Paul Mitchell

It certainly needs upgrading as I think Liverpool are signing better players eg Salah,Mane etc which has allowed them to catch up. Moura seems to be the first time in a while we have signed a big player from a big club rather than potential.

Poch has said many times that he only wants players who improve the Squad, i believe Moura does that, soz if i misunderstood in reading your post, seemed your conclusion was derived from knowledge rather than opinion, my mistake !

We have to get the best out of what we have. Get more consistent.
No point dreaming. They (whoever they comprise of) have a plan. Uf winning a pot is important then surely we coukd have done better at Newport,we should stronly knock them off today and stamp on Rochdale too.
    Lets do that first.
If you get the job done we can go on to the next thing.
Mitchell Schmitchell. I dont want to see Poch Schmuck fail. I want to see him win a pot and get into the CL,see the stadium built and see a Tottenham team in it that is worthy of it.

    Who scouted Lucas Moura?
    Was it you, Steve Hitchen…?

    • Horndog 🇺🇸 February 7, 2018 at 1:35 pm

      Serge Aurier

        I make you right!

Probably safe to assume we won’t be signing anyone from Leipzig any time soon.
I imagine ‘Mitch’ might be carrying a bunch of sour grapes in his suitcase from the way he was treated.
Godspeed, Timo Werner – we hardly knew ye.

To be fair Spurs seem to take so bloody long to sign players that Levy is still probably checking the piggy bank in relation to someone Mitchell recommended two years ago. The inside info on knowing that could jeopardise a very long drawn out and fruitless negotiation.

So Mitchell has gone to an aggressively ambitious outfit. He should like that if nothing else.
