Worried About Wimmer?

By The Boy -

Kevin Wimmer comes into what is unquestionably one the the most important Spurs games of the season, with just 4 games under his belt.

Surely this isn’t an ideal scenario.

The boss is confident enough.

“After playing against Crystal Palace, Colchester, Norwich and Watford, I think he has showed good maturity and good communication with Toby Alderweireld and with Eric Dier when we played with Dier at Colchester. He is a very clever player, and has enough quality to play for us. Yes it is a big test, but not only for Kevin, but for the team, for the squad. Every time that you challenge one of the best players or teams, it is always a big challenge.”

Simmer in his short spell, has been part of a defensive unit that only conceded two goals from all four appearances.

But if you dig a little deeper there’s really no need for concern at all.

Bizarrely, using Squawka’s comparison table when you ask the question, who defensively  (opposed to by possession, or attacking stats) is our best defender, the answer is Wimmer.

Of course you can argue that the sample group is skewed, but given his 4 games where his last four games, then his form is pretty damn solid.

When you drill down, you’ll note that Vertonghen has made 23 league appearances, resulting in 9 defensive actions, 1 defensive error.

In Wimmer’s 3 league appearances, he’s made 7 defensive actions and 1 defensive error. Which for man who’s had to live on the scraps of training games for the bulk of a season isn’t too shabby at all.

Simmer may offer less offensively, but for those of you joining us late, I like my defenders to primarily to display excellence in their capacity as …defenders.

Worried about Wimmer?

Don’t be.
