Winks Update

Winks Update

It was a bloody horrible looking incident and resultant injury but there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Jack Pitt-Brooke is a football journalist for The Independent.

A typical Spurs preseason may well be worth sitting out, given Levy’s insane commercial desires that normally result in the lads only getting about 6 full days off in total.

If Spurs were any normal Premier League side finishing at the very tope end of the table, the return of a relatively new addition such as Winks would be nothing more than a bonus.

Spurs are most definitely not any normal Premier League side and so the return of the 21 year old will be waited upon with no small sense of unease.

Harry’s a good lad and although it would be nice to see him on the bench, I don’t think we’ll need him tomorrow. Better to give him another week and be fully ready for Bournemouth and then the Blue Racists. Maybe ten minutes off the bench to get the feel of the game. No risks please.

Black players are often pacy and / or skilful, whereas goalies are often big lumps. When I was at school it was always the fat kid who went in goal.

        • Still Nil Nil April 7, 2017 at 3:42 pm

Millwall (ex Spurs), wolves have had a couple.

I’m not sure that’s a relevant question really.

There are 92 football teams in the top 4 divisions.
          92 first team keepers.

By the same scale, 368 full backs, 368 centre halves, 368 midfielders, 184 strikers.

          That’s without subs and reserves.

If you’re a keeper, you have to be decent to get a game.
If there are 3 of you at a club, only one will play.
If the team are short elsewhere (injuries to defenders, midfielders, strikers) a keeper doesn’t get a game in those roles.

However, if there are injuries in those positions, a defender gets pushed into midfield/up top and vice Verda in the other positions.

Most people who play have no interest in going in goal, it’s a position you really really WANT to play, it’s really technical and completely different role to all other positions.

So it’s not a question of skin colour, it’s one of ability.

Other positions have a relative equal amount of ethnicity.

          Being a keeper is tough.
          People play football to play.
Why would most people choose to play in a position you’ve only a one in three chance of getting a game?
Plus the responsibility that comes with it?
          It’s a thankless position.

          Very little reward,
Always a huge amount of criticism.

If a keeper makes just one mistake, it’s generally a goal.

Any body else mostly gets away with it due to the comfort of colleagues covering for them.

So skin colour isn’t an issue I don’t feel, it’s more the position.

          • Harry Hotspur April 7, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Colour is never an issue either as players or managers. It’s aways about ability.

            Unless you’re Tim Sherwood.

            • Still Nil Nil April 7, 2017 at 4:25 pm

              He’s just a…
Hmmm, what’s the word I’m searching for?

              Oh yeah, a cunt.

          • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 4:33 pm

Plenty of black players in all other positions. Far more.

            • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 4:35 pm

However I take your point about there being no rotation as is possible with outfield positions.

          • Poxy April 7, 2017 at 6:34 pm

True, a goalkeeper can make a dozen great saves in a game but if he makes a mistake that leads to a goal, his saves will be discounted. A striker however can have a totally shit game but if he pops up with the winning goal, he’s a hero!

      • MysteriousStranger April 7, 2017 at 3:35 pm

That is a serious blow to Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four. I just hope it’s not Man U that take advantage.

    • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 3:16 pm

      • UnkleTaff April 7, 2017 at 3:23 pm

        • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 3:26 pm

In 1963 we were playing Burnley in a third round FA Cup game at WHLwhile the missile crisis was going on. That year the weather was terrible and the gloom of what hung over us was not pleasant.I think we lost 3-0 that day.
    Kennedy though kind of won.

    • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:31 pm

And the US pulled its missiles out of Turkey. In fact the Soviets got what they wanted, which is why they threatened putting missiles in Cuba. But the US tells the story their way, as usual.

      • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 12:35 pm

        • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:38 pm

And the Soviets played it even longer. The US missiles went into Turkey first, and the Soviets compelled Kennedy to take them out again. He lost. Cuba was a gambit.

Think the juries out whether Trump is an unhinged loon but even unhinged loons must get it right sometimes.

    • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 11:55 am

He is hard to figure out. He either keeps changing his mind or doesnt have one. His impulses are there and thats what is dangerous, his narcissistic personality is there and thats dangerous. So where it lands nobody knows.

    • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 11:58 am

Can someone comprehend what the point of this strike was.

      • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:05 pm

Yes, he destroyed the airfield and facilities where the chemical attack was launched, no doubt destroying aircraft, equipment, possibly chemical weapons stocks, and personnel involved. So the cnuts won’t be bragging about the dead kiddies in their mess halls today.

        • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 12:13 pm

fair enough but where does the political strategy go from there?
Im all for numbing Assad as long as Isis and all do not take over,I guess now that the Russians and Assad have hit Isis hard there is room to hit Assad but what next?

          • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:14 pm

If this stops further chemical attacks it will have achieved an objective that the UN ought to be enforcing but is impotent to do.

            • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 12:16 pm

              Fair enough
But dont you expect a response from Putin? Lithuania perhaps?

              • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:17 pm

Why, has Lithuania committed any war crimes recently?

                • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 12:20 pm

No but I dont think Putin will just leave this like that
Assad was always an easy target to take out but nobody did because of the threat of Isis etc
But Russia probably feel they got a black eye in this raid being supporters of Assad

                  • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:22 pm

The speed of US action has surprised Russia. That in itself is a good thing.

                    • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:28 pm

Chemical weapons are not a game. Syria has been punished. Russia denies the Syrians did it (yeah, right. Who else has got jets?) but Russia denied helping the Ukrainian rebels and denied their Sam rocket shot down a civilian aircraft. They are compulsive liars.

                    • ronwol196061 April 7, 2017 at 12:31 pm

Ah, yes. We’re from the USA and we are here to help you. In 1941-45 surely, but since? Ask the Hungarians, the Czechs, all the other Allies we have shat on since, love my country, but we are thoroughly corrupt as evidenced by the Vaudeville act, with snake oil empresario now in charge. If Putin goes after Western Europe it’s hard for me to believe we would come to your aid.

If Putin goes after Western Europe? 😂😂
Whilst the democratically elected government of Ukraine was toppled with admitted help from Soros and the west he is after Western Europe?? Hilarious 😂😂

Putin has had open goals for all his aggressions up until today. Nobody has stood up to him, and it’s made him a hero in Russia. Just like Hitler was a German hero in the early years.

        • gloster1861 April 7, 2017 at 12:09 pm

To cripple the Syrian air force which delivered the chemical weapons. Fairly easy to see that I would have thought.

Good friends, back to bed. I don’t have to be up for another two hours. We are getting to the point that very few will actually be able to remember WW II. In my office most have no recollection of Churchill, Eisenhower, De Gaulle.

Soon it will all start over again. We learn nothing from history.

        • AccringtonSpurs April 7, 2017 at 10:04 am

“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.”

This is very often attributed to Mark Twain, but the earliest published source yet located is by Joseph Anthony Wittreich in Feminist Milton (1987) where he writes: “History may not repeat itself but it does rhyme, and every gloss by a deconstructionist need not be a loss, pushing us further into an abyss of skepticism and indeterminacy.”

The US has carried out a missile attack against an air base in Syria in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town. The Pentagon said 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired at 04:40 Syrian time (01:40 GMT) from destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean. In a televised address, President Donald Trump said the base was the launch point for the chemical attack.

How will Putin and Russia respond in already volatile middle east region?

      • David Dillenberg April 7, 2017 at 7:09 am

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman has described the US air strikes on the Shayrat airbase
as an “aggression against a sovereign nation”. Mr Putin sees them as an “attempt to distract the world from civilian casualties from US military action in Iraq,” and they “do significant damage” to US-Russia ties”, Dmitry Peskov said.
