Beyond the Hanna-Barbera officiating there was a game of football last night and this may be a pertinent moment to mention another fundamental that was also got wrong. Where was the ‘orange ball’?
I found the game itself pretty insane viewing. Anyone seeking to make grand pronouncements about any of the players make need to cool their jets. For the bulk of the second half I was fending off the part of my brain that was finding the lines in the snow to have a hallucinogenic effect, transporting me into a swirling Opta map of passes.
The only certain conclusion that I’ve come to is that Harry Winks + Mauricio Pochettino = less than the sum of their respective/collective parts.
The ‘Ray Wilkins Junior’ jibe has surely runs its course and we are now looking at a player that has stalled.
Winks needs to leave Spurs if only for him to see if he has a genuine future anywhere.
He won’t find out (and nor will Spurs) by Poch running him out for the odd 45minutes then hooking him. Midfield players in particular need a definite identity. Right now, Winks is the ‘Grey Man’ and I’m struggling to see how he will get himself out that particular funk if he stays at Hotspur Way.
Winks could be a great player. ‘For who?’ is the question…
