Winks Immune To The English Malaise?

By The Boy -

Pep Said: “I’m not here to change absolutely anything but I think the second league for the young players is not good enough.

“The consistency is not physically strong. They compete in these second teams but it is not a good league.

“In Spain the second teams in Barcelona and Madrid play in front of 40 or 45,000 people in Barcelona, Madrid. Here they play with no spectators.

“It’s not strong enough. That’s why it’s so difficult for the English people sometimes at big clubs like City. That for me is the real problem.

“I love to work with the young people because of their passion; their intensity is higher, they want to build their own career. It’s much easier but I have to see when they are able to do that.

“I think it’s a real problem for English football, if you accept my opinion. I think the quality of the young players is there and if you have the quality, you can play wherever but (you need) to feel the pressure.

“Why cannot we create Man City or Man Utd second team and not play in the Championship against Newcastle? Playing in front of these huge (crowds). That is the future of English football.”

For all the hoo ha that surrounds the youngsters, most of them are nowhere near good enough make the first team, let alone achieve anything of note.

I would interested to know what class of money the Spanish boys at development are on, my guess is that it might well be a pittance compared with their Albion counterparts.

Or is it simply a cultural thang, and England specialises young men who are more interested in Rolexes, roasting, bad haircuts and Bentleys?

The Premier League isn’t an isolated cesspit when it comes to impossibly young and overpaid, over tattooed, over coiffured ‘superstars’, who aren’t very super.

There’s a pervading mentality across all levels of English football is about poncing as much cash as you can, as fast as you can, for as long as you can.

This is why Harry Winks appears to be a welcome bucking of the trend. He appears capable of retaining eye contact when in conversation, has a conventional haircut and so far has resisted the urge to let people test ball point out pens all over his arms, legs and neck.

Excessive money has produced a generation of players who can get selected, and so make the leap from ‘development’ money to ‘tasty’ money, but fundamentally lack what it takes to truly get on in the game.

The phrase ‘flatter to deceive’ has perhaps never been so accurate.
