Why Harry Winks Will Make It

Why Harry Winks Will Make It

Harry Winks said: “That’s been my game since I was a young lad – to get on the ball, control the game, get us playing and serve the boys higher up. I will continue to do that because that’s what I’ve always done.

It was a difficult one [against Aston Villa] because they were compact, deep and they made it difficult for us to get through them

But we kept playing our way by keeping the ball, playing out from the back and building up patiently.”

  1. He speaks a conventional version of the English language.
  2. Normal hair.
  3. Un-blighted by tattoos.
  4. He’s primarily concerned with playing football.
  5. That is all.

This madness at Millwall is another example of the destruction of football clubs in this country. Orient, west ham, Charlton and Millwall in London alone, and its going on all over. When you couple the demise of clubs around the country with the sudden Chinese obsession with becoming a football superpower, you wonder if there is any relationship between the two. Where are all these seemingly innept foreign owners coming from who are running the smaller clubs into the ground? Make a list, its frightening….

    • Ronan January 11, 2017 at 3:14 pm

One of my best mates supports Millwall and I’ve been down there a few times. Most of the support is still local and they generate a noise like nowhere else. It’s a scandal they’re at risk of leaving London solely because a few corrupt individuals on Lewisham council want to fill their pockets. If this CPO is passed it will just be further confirmation of general bentness in British politics.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? January 11, 2017 at 3:19 pm

Yeah its unbelievable. When your own council is trying to fuck you over. Clubs are gettin it from all angles.

    • Baz January 11, 2017 at 2:29 pm

A year ago yes, but for a short term option he cannot be worse than the last few strikers we have shelled out for.

Looks like Chelsea are on the verge of signing Llorente on loan.

son/lamella/eriksen/ali/nkoudo for 3 slots you could also have Dembele in that mix if you play two holders and sadly Sisoko, we are well blessed in the area, I would still add bojan here

        • Baz January 11, 2017 at 2:32 pm

Wouldn’t risk him with his injury record.

if injured half the season still worth the swap with sisoko they way he has started for us

    • MartinChiversAuntie January 11, 2017 at 2:09 pm

The one who played least well in the nearest position to him in the previous game and or Son, play Eriksen centrally, or play both holders and shift Dembele up central

      • Superspoz January 11, 2017 at 2:17 pm

The one who played least well? Our new formation only allows three attackers. That’s Kane eriksen and alli. So which one drops to accommodate nkoudu?

      • Ronwol196061 January 11, 2017 at 3:12 pm

We have to work more on supply then with Dele up top and with Janssen up top.. We have to get all our players ready for the push forward

  • caveman January 11, 2017 at 12:25 pm

        • MartinChiversAuntie January 11, 2017 at 12:20 pm

Nkoudo should start Ronwol, at least 2-3 games soon, ideally away.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/15122/10722222/the-changing-face-of-scouting-signing-toby-alderweireld

  • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 9:14 am

There’s a lot of scoffing at the idea of Barkley, but left midfield is def a position we could do with strengthening. Think Poch has made it pretty clear he doesn’t fancy NK just yet. He’s a lot stronger on the ball than Son and would make a great squad player imo. We still need depth as this season has already proved, I’d welcome the addition with open arms.

    • UnkleTaff January 11, 2017 at 10:21 am

I agree. People are suggesting he hasn’t developed as well as hoped over the last couple of years. Well where was Danny Rose’s career going before Pochettino took over?

I fear that Everton will want too much money for him but if a deal can be done I’d say he could be worth a punt. He’s a different type of player to Winks so I don’t see that as a problem. Whether he and Alli can work effectively together in the same team remains to be seen, however.

      • MarkFalco January 11, 2017 at 12:09 pm

IMO if we’re going to spend the sort of daft money Everton will be asking for Barks, then we’d be better of buying either a creative AM/playmaker or a proper striker to take the pressure of Kane. I don’t think we need any more “powerful type” AM’s, but instead a little subtlety. There are question marks about his application and work rate too, though as has been said it may be a problem with Koeman. Yes Mauricio could bring him around, but they saifd that about the likes of Townsend and Mason too….
Having said that is he inferior to Sissoko? The answer is probably no.
Personally I don’t expect Levy to spend bugger all in the window.

    • MysteriousStranger January 11, 2017 at 11:14 am

He’s played one, yes one game on the left this season according to whoscored. I don’t see where he fits in or who he replaces. The only way I see him coming in is if Dembélé gets sent to China. Only then does he arguably fill a need, IMO. I reckon N’Koudou showed enough the other day to keep Poch interested, so we’re hardly in bust territory for him after just a few months. Especially given we have a coach who can apparently develop players. It seems a tad premature to write off N’Koudou on this basis, or on the basis that Harry calls him shit. I do concede the point that players can improve under different coaches, so let’s see if Poch can work his magic on GNK first before we write him off.

      • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 11:31 am

I’ve sang Vodoo’s praise for a while now, still can’t believe he didn’t warrant a start against Villa, & do hope Poch starts playing him in the cups. We need to start blooding the guy, had a couple of lovely touches against the chavs at the bridge & then Poch carried on not giving the lad a look in?

    • MarkFalco January 11, 2017 at 12:11 pm

Don’t recall seeing him do very much as a left sided AM? I think he prefers the Alli role, in which case it would be a waste of money buying him wouldn’t it?

      • MarkFalco January 11, 2017 at 12:12 pm

        Barkley that is.

    • MartinChiversAuntie January 11, 2017 at 12:23 pm

I would sign Barkley but not play him left mid, I would also start Nkoudo very soon. I would buy Bojan from Stoke also

  • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 8:31 am

Well I guess being able to pass the ball at a 91 degree angle counts as forwards. 20 appearances, zero assists, one rebound tap in. Not exactly a Modric or Silva now is he?? Not a Moose, nor a Wanyama, or Hoddle for that matter. We thinking Carrick type? I’m not that excited as yet, struggling to see who he replaces.

    • Camus January 11, 2017 at 9:02 am

A tad harsh maybe but I get what you’re saying. He strikes me as a water-carrier type of player. The one you don’t notice but efficiently gets the job done. He spreads the play and makes the odd useful charge forwards. At the moment, that’s all I’m seeing but he’s a useful enough squad player, and as H says, refreshingly devoid of baggage. When he plays, I don’t worry that he’ll make a costly mistake (Bentaleb) or we’ll lose the initiative (Mason/Carroll).

      • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 9:17 am

That’s kinda my point, is he better than Dier, Wanyama or Dembele? Absolutely not, so where does he fit in?? He’s certainly no attacking force, so I don’t see him as much more than a squad player for some time to come, at least 4 years I’d say.

        • JimmyGrievance January 11, 2017 at 11:09 am

Seriously ! It’s fans like you who get right up my hooter….. at a guess, I’d say you aren’t a Janssen fan either ?

This is Winks break through season. He’s not a regular in the side. Yet you compare him to others that are and have been Pro’s far longer.

He’s learning, and from what I’ve seen so far learning quickly.

Give an opinion/analysis when the kids played more !

          Rant over …….

          • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 11:42 am

Nope, I am a Janssen fan & think it’s a real shame he came into the side when it was misfiring, then gets played for 10 mins here or there, or played when all the creative players are rested. I hope he comes good, am reserving judgement til he gets a run of games with some creativety backing him up. Back to Winks, just don’t see him replacing any of the aforementioned in the next few years was all I said, that’s just my opinion, no need to wind yourself up about it.

            • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 11:44 am

PS, 20 games he’s been involved in this season, retained possession well but not created much.

              • MysteriousStranger January 11, 2017 at 11:53 am

He’s started 5 cup games, 2 league games, the rest minor sub appearances. However he has mainly impressed in his limited starts. Interestingly you mentioned his lack of assists. That would be the same number of assists as Dembélé and Wanyama this season?

                • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 3:29 pm

Is that who you’d liken him to then?

            • Gloster1861 January 11, 2017 at 11:49 am

Agree that Janssen has only appeared in weak Spurs sides so far, and yet is expected to carve out goals on his own. Still think he is decent.

    • Caspurs♿️ January 11, 2017 at 12:10 pm

McG, your coming at this from the wrong angle.
Assuming forward is 0º, then a 91º angle pass would be considered backwards.
The the minimum forward angles would be 89º (right) or 271º (left).
      Just sayin..

      • McG ⚽⚽ January 11, 2017 at 3:28 pm

Lol, zero was behind me, I’m looking foward & clockwise for the angle, 91 taking me West-North. Ok ok, 271 !!

    Quick response:

Koeman has grown increasingly frustrated with the England midfielder will ever reach his potential.

Barkley would appear to be approaching a crossroads at Goodison Park

    …because he’s shit.

    • AntSpurs January 11, 2017 at 12:27 am

Because Koeman thinks so you can take this with a pinch of salt. He could be acting this way for a number of reasons and I know that I’ve had employers who I’ve worked with who I can’t agree with, or feel they understand what’s needed or me to flourish in which case either way more the reason to come to the Pochmeister. He gets it !

      • Hartley January 11, 2017 at 12:31 am

You hold onto that thought but don’t be too disappointed when nothing happens, he’s shit, he’s not required and Schneirdelin is not a replacement for him.

        • Hartley January 11, 2017 at 12:31 am

                • Gloster1861 January 11, 2017 at 12:51 am

Actually, with Barkley I think he is struggling precisely because he needs a long run of games under Koeman and it isn’t happening. It would be exactly the same at the Lane, we would have to play him until he came good, and at what cost to our form? I don’t think he would rotate well .

              • AntSpurs January 11, 2017 at 12:47 am

I have very few doubts how he would be a great addition to the squad. I think it’s going to be extremely hard to pull away from his boyhood club but let’s face it, It’s highly unlikely he can win things with Everton and Spurs are well on the way. He could have a premier league medal in his hands come May .

                    • David Dillenberg January 11, 2017 at 12:24 am

IMO described as an attacking midfielder he would revel in our style of play but would not want him to block Winks progress.

IMO we need Winks and Barkley (or similar). I would say that if Winks is good enough (and I think he is) this will only improve his potential. Winning is where it’s at and we’re still a little short .

Worst soundbite of the day on Talkshite radio….. Rose and Walker were left out of the Villa tie so they wouldn’t be cup tied for Citeh…..
It shows that the media, written and spoken (or gobshite in Talksports way) hate Spurs!
Ray Wilkins even grudged us as title challengers yesterday over Manure and his beloved chelscum…..

    • SeattleSpursGuy January 10, 2017 at 10:56 pm

A look at Newsnow headlines says Kane, Walker and Rose are off to ManU, Dembele is off to China, Dele is off to Real and Poch is off to Barca. That might dent our title push… if I believed any of it.

      • Caspurs♿️ January 10, 2017 at 10:59 pm

    • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 11:15 pm

Who said that about them being cup tied?

There are a couple of decent shows on that station, the rest is lowest common denominator crap. You can choose to not tune in.

I agree though that there is a lot of anti-Spurs bias in the media. Sky/News Corp/Talk Shite are so pro-Chavski it’s embarrassing because they’re mainly minted Tories that live in West London or Surrey.

The BBC are generally pro-Ar5enal because they’re all right-on media types that live in or hail from that area of North London.

That’s my theory, I don’t mean to sound like a class warrior but it’s because the London based media is run and co-opted by the upper middle classes either liberal left (Woolwich) or Tory (Chavcheats)…

      • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 11:19 pm

The myth of the academy is it will yield a steady drip of quality players into the first team. The realty of the academy is we get a bunch of players to sell to League One, a few squad players we end up selling to Hull, and the exceedingly rare Harry Kane. Let’s hope Winks is a Kane.

Still Don’t get the academy, we wait and wait for the likes of Livermore, Townsend, Mason to pull on the shirt and then they are gone. Fredericks looked ok for Fulham, more beef on him these days, but Carroll, another mystery. So I hope Winks really delivers what he looks like he’s delivering, I would never have guessed Kane would, he looked like a young Iversen.

      • MysteriousStranger January 10, 2017 at 10:33 pm

It is a farm, and, a lot of the produce ends up going to market. And we get good money sometimes. It is undoubtedly business minded as much as it is with bringing through potential mini Messis for us. I can accept it for what it is.

It doesn’t do any harm. If anything it provides a sound basis for us to spunk £30m on a name here or there, as we’ll be more likely to be able to afford it. Without getting into the hypotheticals about a billionaire owner and how he should spend the money he can’t take with him, etc.

        • Baz January 10, 2017 at 11:48 pm

          It’s a nice little sideline.

    • DC Hotspur January 10, 2017 at 10:14 pm

        • DC Hotspur January 10, 2017 at 10:29 pm

perhaps, but considering all the money we’ve received from the sales of the Masons, Huddlestons, Bentelebs, etc., I wonder if it pays for itself and therefore is worth it to get the occasional kane or winks. I suppose it is an accounting thing but Daniel doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who puts money into something without an eye on it paying off (even though obviously they don’t all pay off).

          • MysteriousStranger January 10, 2017 at 10:43 pm

Probably a great kid, will never make it as a footballer. Like Pritchard.

        • son of mido January 10, 2017 at 10:31 pm

Pritchard isn’t exactly pulling up tress at Norwich! Like he said he would!
Both TC and Pritchard seemed to lack physical strength and stature, I hope onamah can bulk up and keep the pace…

          • Harry Hotspur January 10, 2017 at 10:32 pm

Pritchard’s ‘I’m off to make NCFC a CL side!’ speech has already come back to haunt him. He’s two bob.

Kane scored hats fulI of goals at every level. I never rated him but my farver did. He was right (shh, don’t tell him).

                  • Spursy January 10, 2017 at 11:19 pm

Kane was given a chance away to Leeds in the FA Cup and fluffed a great chance. I thought that he was toast after that, but he’s proved everybody wrong.

  • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:03 pm

Previously talk of Dier, Toby now I hasten to add Harry Winks as a strong contender for a future Spurs captain. In a recent article in the Daily or Sunday Telegraph Winks praised Scotty Parker for his helpful guidance during his time at the Lane where Winks stills speaks to him on the phone.

  • DC Hotspur January 10, 2017 at 10:03 pm

Sort of a Scotty Parker Jr.

    • Hartley January 10, 2017 at 10:06 pm

Just not shit like Scott shitty Parker

      • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:09 pm

Hartley Are you serious. Of course your are not. IMO Scotty Parker was a dream player model professional superb industrious player on and off the field. My only regret is that he did not join Spurs earlier at the beginning of his career rather than the end.

        • Hartley January 10, 2017 at 10:12 pm

Thought he’d be your type. Scott Parker chased cars all day long, he’s a twelve year olds dream player. No team discipline, suited to the lower prem and championship at his lucky best or McDonald’s adverts.

          • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:13 pm

Absolute tosh. End of. Loved his partnership with Mordric.

            • DC Hotspur January 10, 2017 at 10:15 pm

yep, he was good…we just bought him too late to get his best years.

              • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:16 pm

Yes he chose Chelski and Spammers instead.

                • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:19 pm

                  and Newcastle?

                • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 10:20 pm

Because they offered more money no doubt. One thing to like about him is that he grew up a Spurs fan in household of Spurs fans so he could be a worse bloke…

                  • Hartley January 10, 2017 at 10:22 pm

He won fuck all as a player which indicates that he was shit.

Considering many of our players have won nought whats that got to do with it?

                    • Hartley January 10, 2017 at 10:26 pm

                      How old is he?
                      No, how old are you?

                    • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 10:51 pm

He was no world beater but he did a reasonable job when we had nobody else better in that position, however i’m not wetting myself with excitement at the mention of his name either…

                  • David Dillenberg January 10, 2017 at 10:22 pm

He is certainly one worth leading our youth academy plus having on the coaching staff for his natural leadership qualities.

                    • Hartley January 10, 2017 at 10:23 pm

                      Nope.

    • LingLongMan 🚯 January 10, 2017 at 10:24 pm

He uses SP’s number instead of 40.

  • SeattleSpursGuy January 10, 2017 at 9:57 pm

Well, the normal hair and no tattoos rule would preclude Toby from making it at Spurs. The fact that he speaks better English than most of our English players leads me to conclude that he is the exception proving the rule.

    • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 10:59 pm

Thing is Seattle, it seems when a player from overseas has lots of tats and ‘look at me’ hairdo’s that they can still prove to be focused and professional. If they’re English it usually means their priority is more getting ‘in da club’ VIP area over being the best player they can.

It’s a British disease with players, the moment Winks or Alli go up that route you will se a 25% decrease in their overall output as a player over season. They’ll do enough to stay in the team to earn the big money but that becomes more important once they go all ‘fly’…

  • MysteriousStranger January 10, 2017 at 9:50 pm

    61SpursNut🌰
Everton agree £22m for Schneidy. Phew!

Just like they did with Sissoko? Does this mean he’ll be signing for us before the end of the night?!

    • Frontwheel 2 January 10, 2017 at 9:51 pm

      Hope so

      • A waddle and a fork January 10, 2017 at 9:57 pm

He will do very well there

        • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 10:46 pm

Funny that Poch never really showed that much interest in bringing him to us, perhaps he was interested at one time but that was before Dier converted to midfield, Dembele came good and the Winks emerged as a real prospect in central midfield. Add Wanyama and there’s no reason to shell out for Schiederlin now.

About 18 months ago or so the clamour on here to sign him was at fever pitch (not from me, although at the time he looked like he’d fit in) think we ended up with Benji Stambouli instead. Yet another mystery signing of recent years along with a list of them as long as your arm and in no particular order, feel free to add more:

          Capoue
          Paulinhio
          Clinton Cards
          Holtby
          Pienaar
          Gilberto
          Chriches
          Bentley
          Iago Falque
          Bongani Khumalo
          Alan Hutton
          Gio Dos Santos
          Chris Gunter
          KP Boateng
          DeAndre Yedlin

What I mean is players that never seemed to fit in at all or have any role in the squad whatsoever.
Is it the curse of the DOF?

I would include Pav and Darren Bent but at least they got some goals, well who else did we have to stick up front…

Can somebody explain why we signed any of these players?

          • East Stand January 10, 2017 at 10:48 pm

Didier Zokora, another baffling signing but along with Bent and Pav he played because there was nobody else.

He seems a really nice young man and the endorsement and celebrations with Mo-Po after the debut goal against the pykey chavs showed a real level of respect, firstly the boy went to Mo-Po straight away to thank him for his faith and Mo-Po in turn showed real glee that the boy did good and repaid his trust in him…….
It was a truly great moment, the first in many I hope for winks and the whole club! onamah and Edwards to follow!
Levy may not be supporting Mo-Po with the spending power, but the Argentinian seems to be shining up the nuggets our academy is producing….. long may it continue!

Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Tobes, Verts, Brainfart, Tripps, Moose, Tin tin and even Coco and to a certain extent Deli; theyre all decent blokes as far as i can tell, no rampant egoists in there and it continues with many of the rest of our squad. But Winks is already stand-out for his humility, professionalism and character. It’s all genuinely refreshing and makes me prouder than ever to be a Spurs fan. We actually have no out and out twats in our team (methlabs at Schalke remember). How many if any other teams in the EPL can say that.

It’s literally restoring my faith in football.
