If Tottenham’s fine squad and even finer management team can take time out from dealing with their collective inner hurt, we’ve a football match this evening.
SL Benfica no less. Memories of Jimmy Greaves’ own angst back in ’62 will undoubtedly be rekindled for some seasoned campaigners amongst us.
But just who are they, these days?
The Portuguese currently top the Primeira League, with a 7 point advantage. They are in flying form domestically, unbeaten in their last 5 games; they have only conceded 13 goals (the lowest in the Primeira) and have a goal difference of +27 (the highest in the Primeira).
We face them this evening because they dropped out of the Champions League. But don’t let that phrase allow you to mistake them for “drop outs”, they collected 10 points in their group. Only losing out to Olympiacos FC (the mob that mauled Man Utd recently) on second place in that group, by way of goal difference.
Given our laboured performances in all competitions thus far, let alone this one, it’s a struggle to see quite how this night will become a famous one in our floodlit history.
One would hope against hope that it is a great night, we could do with a confidence boost, but only brave man would place any of his children’s inheritance with a bookmaker over it.
