He’s rotated just like he said he would. Tonight’s starting XI is Vorm (C), Aurier, Alderweireld, Foyth, Rose, Wanyama, Winks, Sissoko, Lamela, Son, Llorente.

The subs bench looks like this: Gazzaniga, Trippier, Sanchez, Walker-Peters, Eriksen Dele, Kane.

So it’s rotation, with plenty of insurance. There’s 3 potential game winners up Mauricio’s sleeve. What won’t sit well is if his first picks need bailing out.

Newport County did play excellently last time out, but they really did struggle physically in the second half and Wembley will be far too much for them, even if they were to score two in the first half. Again, that’s not being mean, it’s based upon the gulf in professional energy levels  and overall experience.

This is Poch’s 200th game. I understand that Daniel Levy was to present him with an EPNS egg cup at half time but at Mauricio’s assistance this will now not take place as the gaffer does not wish to send out mixed messages to his players. Trophies are not everything. This is futbol.

Prediction: Spurs to win by 3 goals.

I didn’t go last night, and could have, what held me back was not so much the sitting on a plastic seat in the cold but the knowing that it would be like having teeth pulled out but not by a dentist. If, say, a couple of the Llorentes went in, and the bar had lifted up for Dele then 5/6-0 would have taken the edge off, but none of that happened. Instead there were three reserves (Vorm, Foyth, Llorente) playing with five back from long-term injury (Ald, Rose, Lam, Winks, Wan) which leaves the insanely bad Sissoko, the unreliable Aurier, and the one decent player, Son taking on a team who were almost playing non-league football this year. 11 guys in white shirts is not a team, and the other 11 guys were a team, but If Sissoko, on his own, and Llorente, on his own, can’t score, at Wembley, against a fourth division side then something is badly, badly wrong.

    • OrganicPaper February 8, 2018 at 10:31 am

We dominated a L2 team that were playing the biggest game of their careers (for most). Just because we didn’t smash them 6-0 doesn’t mean anything.
There were loads of positives, not least the game time for long term injured players and Foyth was excellent for most of the game.
Llorente is not having a great time that is clear and we all know about Sissoko by now.
Im surprised by the negative feeling after progressing in the cup. Lord knows how many cup upsets have happened to big teams at the hands of minnows. We avoided that and we should be happy about it!

Cannot understand how lorente can be still employed by the club if he was in any other business he would have been dismissed for shear in competence . This must be the worst player we have ever signed with Sissoko not far behind. With regard to Saturdays game this is just one of many if not all massive games between now and the end of the season and not to stand in isolation. If we loose there will be many twist and turns before the season is finally over. Arsenal with Europa dopey on their back will have many disrupted fixtures and more to play than plus they only have one league game this month and be forced to play midweek as catch-up. If we can and should beat them it makes their task very difficult to overtake us.

  • Legoverlass February 8, 2018 at 9:24 am

Not much to say other than job done and the FA scup is giving us a relatively easy ride to the latter stages and I guess Pooch is now perhaps thinking this could be a first trophy for his cabinet, Llorente and Sissoko showed that despite the level of the opposition they are both unbelievably crap. Winks was his usual Scotty Parker tribute act. Foyth looks a player. Great to see Tobes back but a real concern that still no news on his contract situation. Aurier seems to be looking more awkward with each game and if he had anything about him I fear Pooch and his team are turning him into another French haircut. Trouble is I still feel he offers more attacking threat and physicality than Trippier.Ali is definitely on the turn not included terms of form just on the turn. Lam Lam was a busy bee and does offer us some additional threat in the last third but I have never seen a player tackle with his left peg so much. No wonder his hips were shot. Son was and has been our most direct player all season. He just moves the whole attack forward instead of that painful tippy tippy. Massive game Saturday ….

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 9:34 am

Both Son and Lamela want to get forward quickly and they offer drive to the team. Hopefully Moura will be another.
We do seem to be buying near miss specialists with Soldado, Janssen and now Llorente. How he failed to score, remarkable. if we’d been relying on him for a goal we’d have lost.

  • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 9:14 am

A supreme effort from the lads on Saturday, and a haul of seven points from nine should be the basis of a top four place. This run of games was almost a mini ‘Group of Death’ in itself.

The Juve game is coming up, but I don’t know how form in Serie A compares to the premier league so can’t judge how hard they will be.

    • Sexy Beast February 8, 2018 at 10:36 am

They won’t offer up many chances so we need to be replaced co solid ourselves, could easily be a 0-0 but let’s hope Harry can notch as an away goal would be mega ⚽️

  • Camus February 8, 2018 at 8:21 am

Well done the lads for getting the job done.
BBC Radio 1 reported on the match apologetically on their news bulletin this morning along the lines of “Spurs are through to the 5th round thanks to a Newport County own goal…” and then played the radio commentary clip of the ‘fortuitous’ goal. They didn’t mention Lamela’s goal at all.

Had it been Liverpool, we’d have had “Player X sealed the victory for the Reds after an earlier own goal…”

    Agenda.

    • East Stand February 8, 2018 at 8:38 am

I think there is an agenda, increasingly so since BBC’s ‘Media City’ was set up in Salford.

Along with the emergence of City under the Arab oil money and Manure always having been a big and fairly arrogant club the North West football gets all the focus from the BBC now as the epicentre of football in England, so even their Scouse rivals get talked up. definitely got an agenda against the London clubs.

I find that the London based Sky are very pro Chavs, followed by Woolwich. A lot of bias against Spurs generally. Look at the way everybody wanted Leicester to win the league and wee desperate for us not to catch them. I thought that was telling…

      • Camus February 8, 2018 at 8:41 am

        Absolutely.
On top of that, you have the ban Dele got for that 1-finger salute to his own player.
Meanwhile, Troy Deeney did the same salute to opposition fans the other night – no action taken. Lallana man-handled our player in that U-21 game – no action taken.
        Why am I not surprised…

        • East Stand February 8, 2018 at 9:04 am

Lalana should be banned for three games, simple as that.

On that basis you can play for the under 23’s, punch the ref in the face, bite an opponent’s ear off, piss in the Gatorade and take dump in the centre circle and you’re all good to play in the next Premier League fixture? It’s bullshit…

    Article on midfield CM Position….
The Premier League’s central problem: the role of midfield controller
    https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/feb/07/pogba-ramsey-epitomise-struggles-central-midfielder

Hi Ron, read the article just now.
I’m not sure I’m on board with the tone of it and what they’re suggesting.
Just because Pogba is one of those “driving big-ego midfielders” who often flatters to deceive, and Ramsey can be a bit flaky, doesn’t mean it’s a problem position generally. De Bruyne runs games; Toni Kroos runs game; Modric has run many games in his time, as we know. Pirlo never struggled to pull the strings either with someone like the tough-tackling Gattuso alongside him.

The game evolves and maybe we’ll see more of this 3-man midfield lark a la Liverpool, but I’d still argue if you have 1 creative Pirlo-type and 1 tackling Gattuso-type, and they’re decent players, you won’t go far wrong.

Will we ever see Dier run a game? Not sure. He seemed to think he could do that with England at the Euros. It didn’t really pan out… He’s not Pirlo.
Big Vic is better at that position. Not a supreme but almost like a Gattuso who can also lay the ball off to others.

    More Guardian fake news?

    • East Stand February 8, 2018 at 8:48 am

I think it’s true, when you play that central midfield role your focus can alter game to game or even within a game.

Even if say Dembele has Dier or Wanyama alongside him, if the opposition are playing for example with one sitting and two getting forward in central midfield then Dembele will be spending more time helping to track one of those rather than getting forward, dribbling or playing passes.

However my issue with the piece is how much it attempts to let Pogba and Maureen off the hook, Pogba was regarded as the best in his position in the world, Maureen the most successful manager of recent times. Quite frankly if Pogba and Maureen aren’t sorting it out then they should expect criticism. For his price and wages, so far Pogba is a massive flop.

      • Camus February 8, 2018 at 8:55 am

Pogba is one of the poster boys for the ‘diversity crowd’ and with his profile being irrationally high, he can do no wrong.

        • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 9:00 am

I’m quite happy for Yanited to play Pogba, because he has ‘ feet of clay.’ A few brilliant games per season in amongst many more poor performances.

          • Camus February 8, 2018 at 9:22 am

Yes, true. The hype and noise is beyond tedious but you are right – let them fail with him.

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 8:57 am

I’d say Wanyama was a leader yesterday, really got to grips with the game and was excellent. In a cup game even ‘lowly’ opposition need to be contested with and he really did that.

  • MiT February 8, 2018 at 6:40 am

The question is will Alderweireld be with us beyond this season? He is sure to have had his head turned by Manchester City who are flying high at the top of the table. Foyth is surely ready to make the step up.

Alderweireld is contracted through June of 2020, but I could see him leaving – he strikes me as a bit of a mercenary type, but I could simply be misreading.

Vorm is only signed through this June 2018. I would love to see him kept on in his current role. He is a great teammate, and a quality keeper. Age 32, I know, but still a very affordable and able backup. Goodness, Lloris is 31 this year, I think.

Dembele and Vertonghen are both Age 30 and are signed through June 2019. I really like both of them. It is hard to know how long and how much to contract an age 30 outfield player, but both guys are immense when they are on.

I would even submit that Vertonghen is at the peak of his career. He just looks solid and composed, and a leader. He came to Spurs as the very first bigger club he ever signed with, and he has seen it through many years of peaks and valleys.

I believe I would like to see him on all the way through his contract, and to see the captaincy given to him. If anyone has earned it, it is him — over Alderweireld for certain, at least.

    JMO.

Talking to myself here … time for some shuteye, perhaps.

OK I just watch the game on tape and it wasn’t that bad. Aside from some shaky errors from players who don’t play much, we weren’t under much threat. Going forward, there were several presentable chances. All in all, we controlled the match and didn’t expend a ton of effort to do it. On to the next round.

      Doucoure, no “a”.

I’ve watched seven or eight Watford matches this season. He’s a tireless runner I’d guess he’s top 10 in distance/match in the league, pretty decent touch, box to box type that can run with the ball at pace. He’s little on the lean/beanpole side, fits our profile from an age and wage perspective. I’d be happy to have him, probably not a regular starter if everyone is fit, but Dembele’s time is rapidly winding down.

The ITK I read last month said we were looking at a player from Watford. Initially people assumed this was Richarlison. But gradually more and more have been saying they hoped it was Doucoure. From what I’ve seen of him I think he’d be a fairly astute buy.

The next two games ate ‘it’ – if the Arse are beat and Juventus are too, or drawn with, or rattled, at least, then the Totts have a season. Abramovich United are not going to keep on fucking up and while the Reds of Anfield are not as good as the Totts, they have the luck in some bizarre, Klopp way. So, to stay in the frame 3 points on Saturday are essential. I’m not just a ‘glass half-full’ guy I’m a glass-in-the-crotch-of-a-new-light-grey-wedding-suit-so-I-look-like -I’ve-pissed-myself-guy. I admit, I am a bottler, I was a guy who dreaded the steps at the Park Lane end after the match when the crew forced everybody forward at great pace and you risked your life even after some dire draw with Stoke in the cup. There I’ve said it, because I’m down to the bottom of a loss-leader bottle of Tesco Glenlivet. Please, please, prove me wrong you (insert expletive), It was a practice match and yet you can’t give fucking Newport County an enema. Please let Moura be the new Bale, or some kind of Berbatov-Dalmat sandwich. Let us stuff these fucking teams that keep on showing up at ‘our’ Wembley home and make 2nd again. Why can’t I watch this version of Tottenham and just cruise a win? Why was that was like Young Boys of Berne, away?

            • Hartley™ February 8, 2018 at 12:54 am

      • David Dillenberg February 8, 2018 at 12:06 am

IMO no point buying a potential star performer and sticking him on the bench.
Rattling their backline unleash him against the Arse me thinks.

        • gus February 8, 2018 at 12:07 am

Further evidence that you shouldn’t do crack kids!!

        • Accy February 8, 2018 at 12:07 am

Whilst that’s not how we do things at Spurs, you have a point. You’re familiar with Arsenal’s new signings and I believe they went straight into the first team.

          • Hartley™ February 8, 2018 at 12:09 am

            Yeh but they’re fucking desperate.

            • Accy February 8, 2018 at 12:10 am

It will be the reason we’ll beat them saturday.

          • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:10 am

One already playing many EPL games and the other playing every week at Dortmund who play similar to Arse and as such was fit and ready to go. Big difference imo.

          • Caspurs♿️ February 8, 2018 at 12:10 am

I could understand him playing the last 20 minutes if we’re in a position with the game won to give him a run out without too much at stake, but only then.

            • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:12 am

              Definitely

            • Accy February 8, 2018 at 12:12 am

              Yep

            • King Leer February 8, 2018 at 3:23 am

So he’ll be getting 20 mins, then.

        • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:09 am

We might want to give him some time to watch our system, get fit and then give him minutes. You can’t start him in one of the most intensive and important games of our season. WTF DD? Stop and think just for a minute.

          • David Dillenberg February 8, 2018 at 12:26 am

What I am thinking about is a guy with pace who can open up defences creating chances for Kane and co.

    • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 12:33 am

DD FFS………Dele has the edge we need for this one

      • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:36 am

Dele will get us a penalty

      • David Dillenberg February 8, 2018 at 12:36 am

        Fair point.

        • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 12:39 am

DD we need antagonists protagonists instigators and devils…

  • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:53 pm

Have we purchased a dud when IMO disappointing Aurier is gradually turning into an expensive flop as currently simply not justified his price tag.

    • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:54 pm

      yes

    • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:55 pm

We’re racking up many more duds than diamonds these last few windows.

Let’s hope Moura turns out to be something more than another piece of junk.

      • East Stand February 8, 2018 at 8:58 am

Who knows, Aurier might end up ok eventually but I’m getting bored already. I wouldn’t pick him in any important games until he starts playing better, Tripps isn’t perfect but at least he doesn’t play like he’s on Angel Dust…

    • Hartley™ February 7, 2018 at 11:57 pm

Only if YOU personally contributed. Did YOU?

    • East Stand February 8, 2018 at 8:56 am

Aurier is still young and certainly raw and his work rate is very good.

Unless he starts playing like a fullback that looks like it’s even his natural position soon he will start looking more and more like the usual, bargain Froggy dross Levy has insisted on hoovering up from around Ligue 1 in the last few years.

Add the fact he plays like he’s semi unhinged and constant straight red in waiting, this is a crossroads for the Homophobe in stupid clothes…

  • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:51 pm

Dier rested so I am expecting him to start in the NLD. However, i would like we play a back 3 of Tobes, Sanchez and Verts. Leave the front four the same, Ericksen, Son, Dele and Harry. Put Dembele and Wanyama with Trips on the right. No Davies or Rose.

    • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:54 pm

Davies and Tripps will start for sure. If those two and Dier can lift their form to what it was in the Man U game we’ll be alright.

If we play like we did in the Emirates NLD, it’ll be a whitewash.

      • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:59 pm

I am pretty sure you are right but it was just what I would have liked to see. Anyhoo

        • Accy February 8, 2018 at 12:01 am

If no Davies or Rose who would you have had at left wing back?

          • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:05 am

I don’t think we need to specifically play one – Dele, Son or Ericksen can drop back a little and take the ball or even Moussa move slightly forward when we are in attack. Wanyama, Vert’s, Tobes and Sanches are very strong to cover. Even Vert’s makes decent forays and has a decent pass and shot actually.

    • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:55 pm

A bold selection but I would play Foyth not Dier in the NLD.

      • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:58 pm

I don’t have Dier or Foyth in my team

      • Rich G🙄 February 8, 2018 at 6:00 am

        😂😂😂

  • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:26 pm

What did we learn this eve. Not a lot other than Son and Lamella were instrumental in this comfortable victory. IMO the quiet unassuming defender who gave a measured mature performance was Foyth.

    • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:29 pm

Comfortable on the ball perhaps he is ready to usurp Dier in this role?

      • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:34 pm

Originally having high expectations for Winks my principal gripe is that whilst he is always neat and tidy IMO he is too conservative with his passing. More dynamism and defence splitting passes required to advance his game to the next level.

        • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:38 pm

100% agree about Foyth and Winks to be honest. Winks is not the player we need in that role. Does some good things for about 25 mins in a game but is left ball watching for the rest

          • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:43 pm

With Winksy I believe it’s form and game time – he’s been out an awful lot. At the end of last season before his injury he WAS pulling up trees and looking great. Got injured, came back – not as potent as before, got injured again, and is only just recovering any kind of form.

Good for Winks is he has time on his side to get back to that level we saw last season.

            • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:44 pm

Yes but whats his role; if not a holding or creative visionary midfielder then what?

            • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:53 pm

I thought even back then accy he was not the controlling player we need in that role. we need him to take control of the game. Go look for the ball, get into holes make ‘THE’ pass but alas he does not always do this.

              • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:59 pm

he definitely was doing all of those things just not to the level of a david silva or kevin de bruyne. He’s young and has time – and I can see why he was the one to graduate from the academy.

                • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:01 am

I sincerely hope you are right. he seems a likely lad.

      • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:35 pm

The question is will Alderweireld be with us beyond this season? He is sure to have had his head turned by Manchester City who are flying high at the top of the table. Foyth is surely ready to make the step up.

        • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:37 pm

If he stays I would hand him the captaincy.

        • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:40 pm

I don’t think anyone will want to leave. Not next season anyway…with the new stadium and a couple of shrewd purchases I am hoping we will b quite an exciting outfit. Tobes needs a refurb contract with payment accordingly.

          • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:42 pm

Tobes was not the most inspiring post match interview I have ever listened to !

          • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:45 pm

It’s the ‘shrewd purchases’ bit I’m not confident about. We’re so hit and miss in our business – especially in attack. The transfers this summer will be sold as us striking oil. But you’ll still have to google them, most likely.

            • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:48 pm

Hi Accy, I am hoping next season we buy one young very exciting prospect and two very well established and known players.

              • David Dillenberg February 7, 2018 at 11:49 pm

Syd we already have a young exciting prospect on our books in Phoenix Patterson!!

                • Caspurs♿️ February 7, 2018 at 11:53 pm

You’ve never seen him play DD, all you’re going on is someone else’s opinion.

                • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:56 pm

I can’t even find him on our club website

                  • Caspurs♿️ February 7, 2018 at 11:58 pm

He’s not considered as one of the brightest prospects by the club at present, although things can change.

                    • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:00 am

I can’t see him in the academy or the Dev. Squad. Who is he????

                    • Caspurs♿️ February 8, 2018 at 12:04 am

A 17yr old winger who got a happened to get a hatrick in a match, now he’s DD’s great hope.

                    • Sydknee February 8, 2018 at 12:05 am

but where is he on the clubs website. Which team is he in. Is he a striker or MF?

              • Accy February 7, 2018 at 11:52 pm

It’s certainly possible with the satisfaction of the sponsors at the new gaff on the line. And god knows I pray for some decent acquisitions daily. We’ve been burned as fans too many times – can Levy the Leopard change his spots?

      • AntSpurs February 7, 2018 at 11:38 pm

Simple training game to warm the cockles for the huge games ahead. Lamela and Foyth looking sharp. Son’s still looking good. Will be a cracker on Saturday. Kane’s due to start banging in a few hatricks so expect him to do do the biz as use.

    • Sydknee February 7, 2018 at 11:45 pm

I found sissoko trying hard in the last few games but his control cannot bear watching. another who is way to conservative for the role.
Next season I am hoping a few are gone including Onomah, Winks, Sissy, CCV, N’Koudou, Janssen, Llorente, KWP and Rose.
That sell off should net us a decent amount of money, perhaps 120 to 140mill to spend on two to three very good quality players, all attackers in one form or another

    • nick February 7, 2018 at 11:49 pm

Got to agree,Foyth will be immense but just a little lightweight at present

They might be right, Woolwich won’t be as depressed as they have been recently but if we can get at their defence they are well beatable. Tougher game than it might have been before the transfer window, they have short term lifting of the gloom thing going on…

Amazing how intangibles such as context, environment, energy, nerves, etc. motivate and affect players’ performances and the complexion of a match. Tonight – which I’m in no way frustrated by – was a quiet, sloppy stroll compared to the electricity and sharpness of, say, a NLD.

    • Lilywhite February 7, 2018 at 8:51 pm

I agree, must be quick. One thought is to maybe limit its use, ie) off sides, goal line, penalty and cards only. Just thinking aloud.

  • Still Nil Nil February 7, 2018 at 8:43 pm

The discussion of it alone there made me cringe — The effect it has had on American football is awful. Tedious, cumbersome, nitpicking crap.

VAR will not take the subjectivity out. It will only cock up the floe of an otherwise beautiful game.

Reviewing subjective ref calls makes for a good point of discussion among the fans and talking heads during the week. Been that way for years.
