Home » vs. Monaco

A Guest Blog from Tom Canton

It has been 5 years since Tottenham were last in the Champions League.

Fans of the club would have been rather pleased to avoid one of the big teams from pot 1, after drawing Russian champions CSKA Moscow.

However, pulling out Champions League regular Bayer Leverkusen and Ligue 1 title challengers Monaco may have unsettled the nerves slightly.

Spurs’ first fixture is against the principality club.

Although Monaco were drawn from pot 4, the club are currently riding high at the top of Ligue 1 and 3 points ahead of 7th placed PSG.

In fact, Monaco have already recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over the current French champions this season.

Spurs will certainly have to look out for the in-form Fabinho; the Brazilian wing-back who is currently plying his trade in central midfield has scored 3 goals in 4 matches. Joao Moutinho, off the back of winning Euro 2016, will also be a threat and compatriot Bernado Silva will also look to cause the Premier League side problems.

Spurs have no new injury issues going into the European tie; Danny Rose is still out with a hamstring strain, with Welsh international Ben Davies expected to deputise. Mauricio Pochettino will be boosted by the availability of Moussa Dembele; the Belgian had been suspended from Premier League action after an altercation with Chelsea’s Diego Costa towards the back end of last season.

Spurs will play at Wembley stadium for the match; similar to their North-London rivals Arsenal, who spent time there during the Emirates stadium build.

It remains to be seen how the unfamiliar surroundings will affect their performances, be that positive or negative.

Whilst more fans will be able to attend matches, the alien environment could have an undesired effect on mentality.
