The 3 giants of Premier League football the man said, Manchester City, Manchester United and Harry Kane. You see, Pep, that’s a far more agreeable way of wording things and it doesn’t make you look quite so churlish and needy.

Harry Kane looks destined to kick contemporary football records to kingdom come, despite the usual ‘August Hex’. 13 goals in one month of which 11 were for the mighty Spurs is extraordinary stuff.

Surely now one of the most sought after strikers on planet Earth, the boy Kane has score more goals than a good many Premier League clubs. Just let that sink in for a moment.

Who knows how many outfield players in each team, each team playing for 90 minutes over 7 games… and still one man is a superior goal-meister than all of them combined. Surreal stuff and long may it continue.

    McG 鈿解毥

    MysteriousStranger
Cue the meltdown from an incredulous McG. 馃榾

Meh!! I鈥檝e been keeping an eye on Winks, said a few times he looks more than decent, am v happy to see him part of the England squad. Granted I do like to wind up few on here over the lad (simply cos they been waxing lyrical a little too much was all). His pass % is up to 88% this season which is impressive. If you look at his ratings for last season & this, he鈥檚 still only managing 6.5 this season, increased from 6.3 last. Compare that with Dier 7.04 this, 6.93 last, Wanyama 7.21 last season, Dembele 7.18, Eriksen 7.43 & 7.53. Dele, 7.35 & 7.26, Son 7.14, Sissy this season: 6.81. People were calling for him to start matches & I simply didn鈥檛 agree (other than in league cup games & pos a few FA cup matches). I鈥檒l keep my fingers crossed for him as he鈥檚 one of ours, but think it will be a good couple of seasons before he betters any of the above mentioned, if at all.

Here’s the thing, McG. You are quoting “averaged out” Whoscored stats when Winks has only started one CL game and one PL game, with 4 sub appearances in the PL.

His scores for each game along with minutes played in each fixture are as follows:

v Newcastle (0′ played – subbed on less than a full minute before the final whistle) 6.18

    v Burnley (2′ played) 5.61

    v Everton (12′ played) 6.51

    v West Ham (17′ played) 6.2

    v APOEL (90′ played) 7.45

    v Huddersfield (90′ played) 7.26

Given subs usually start with a base score of around 6 with Whoscored (with less time to make an impact) it’s clear to see why his average score is so low – because he was sub playing brief minutes. Taking those scores and dividing by 6 (games) as this does is pretty basic (and arguably quite dumb). I would also say it is nonsensical and/or lazy to reference it as if it has much significance. It obviously doesn’t.

    • MysteriousStranger October 3, 2017 at 3:52 pm

      *Referencing the current season.

    • Harry Hotspur October 3, 2017 at 3:54 pm

Also factor in that whoever dreamt up WhoScored? Ratings must be a complete virgin in order to need to take Opta stats and bastardise them into a score out of 10

      • MysteriousStranger October 3, 2017 at 4:02 pm

However they use the data (and I’ve certainly no objection to people using data to draw conclusions in principle), there’s clearly a flaw in the system they are using when they attribute the same value/worth to a substitute appearance, as they do to a full game appearance.

        • Harry Hotspur October 3, 2017 at 4:17 pm

The whole Who Scored? thing is trying to be gameified in order to engage with children who otherwise would be playing Top Trumps.

There is some solid data in there, but they’ve distorted it.

It’s probably better to watch him play rather than look at scores.

    • mattspurs October 3, 2017 at 3:16 pm

What are these ratings based on?

For me Winks is our best midfielder in terms of upping the tempo – he passes a lot and quickly and can be a calming influence. For me he’s a better player than Mason and Carroll who played the same position for us.

      • McG 鈿解毥 October 3, 2017 at 3:22 pm

Yep, no question he’s better than both, but not better than any of the above mentioned (yet).

      • Harry Hotspur October 3, 2017 at 3:41 pm

These ratings are total garbage from WhoScored? Winks is an infinitely superior player to Dier, Dele and Sissoko.

        • mattspurs October 3, 2017 at 4:39 pm

A superior passer sure. But he’s never going to play an attacking role as well as Dele, he’s never going to be able to drop into defence like Dier, or run around chaotically like Sissoko.

          • Harry Hotspur October 3, 2017 at 4:45 pm

Right now, Dele’s never going to play an attacking role as well as Dele.

    • SpurAndy 馃崚蟺 October 3, 2017 at 3:42 pm

Are these ratings from Whoscored.com McG? Whilst on the subject our delightful Dele has the 4th highest rating in the team so must be doing something good. According to Whoscored they say their ratings are based on Opta stats.

    Syd
He is no Kane but he is the best back up we have had in years

I don’t think of Llorente as a backup to Kane as they possess completely differing attributes. Llorente is possibly a different goal-scoring option from the bench when playing against bus parkers. Good for set pieces. But how good are we as a team at set pieces? not very.

We still need another striker IMO. Janssen was supposed to be that guy, but didn’t make it.

    • Gus October 3, 2017 at 2:20 pm

The guy scored 15 EPL goals last season, he knows the way to the goal and he’s not concerned about being a sub. He just needs to open his account and the fans will be fine

Suarez maybe an insane beaver but at least he has some balls. I remember England v Uruguay in the world cup, in the first 10 minutes he had a 50/50 with Gerrard and put him on his backside. Club friendships forgotten that day for him. The match was lost from that moment.

Winks is a promiing young player and its nice for him he’s got a bit of international expearience, also I’m aware its a last minute fill in, but what is going on these days with England? The kid has played a few matches for us. It used to be a career pinnacle to be picked for England, it was hard work and when you were picked it was after proving yourself in league football over a prolonged period. When something comes that easy its no wonder its lost value. When you see Gazza unable to talk about being picked for his country without welling up, you realise how things have got. This kind of thing is the reason.

    • MysteriousStranger October 3, 2017 at 12:35 pm

Easy? It arguably comes harder because teams have far more foreigners in their first team than there were in Gazza’s day. The best English youngsters are often playing second fiddle to the wealth of expensive foreign talent that now dominates the Premier League. The number of PL starts Winks has had isn’t that relevant (in modern day football terms) when it comes to him getting called up for the national side, and he should be no less proud than anyone else bestowed with the honour.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 3, 2017 at 12:38 pm

        Hard in club football yes.

        • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 3, 2017 at 12:46 pm

I wouldn’t suggest the lad isn’t proud, just that it doesn’t carry the same aura now.

    • mattspurs October 3, 2017 at 12:36 pm

Who would you rather they picked, someone older with lots of PL but no potential or a prospect who has played for every junior England team since he was 15?
Chances are we win on Thursday and England top the group – the second game becomes a chance to play the kids.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 3, 2017 at 12:39 pm

I suppose the quality ain’t there so the chances come quicker.

    • AccringtonSpurs October 3, 2017 at 12:37 pm

Jake Livermore is a bit puzzling.

Seems as though Southgate has been tasked with bringing in faces from a wider selection of teams than just the top 6. It’s evolved to broaden the appeal – with Maguire/Keane/Butland/Livermore/Defoe is back…

      Is it working?

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 3, 2017 at 12:41 pm

The national team is a symptom of the Premier and the dominant foreign influence. Players getting picked now are baffling.

And he does all that whilst looking only 10% as good as he actually is ….. here’s to another golden boot for the one season wonder

  • ronwol196061 October 3, 2017 at 11:37 am

Having Harry Kane is not enough. We have an excellent team but should be focused on getting Eriksen and Dele..and Son to some extent playing every game. Yes its true Eriksen and Son were both suffering some injuries but if we ever had a problem its dealing with packed defences. The good thing is the better teams dont play that style and thats what we have coming up for two weeks. Our defence has been fantastic and that has been the springboard for most of our success…turning it over and quickly going forward. The system is working but we do still need one more creative player to open things up when they are not.
Dele is the man really to grow. He needs it and we need it.

    • Horndog October 3, 2017 at 11:44 am

Yes, Dele NEEDS to grow, for himself and the team. Harry Winks WILL grow for the team, he is already a grown up.

      • ronwol196061 October 3, 2017 at 11:48 am

I dont know about Winks. And I mean that I really dont know. Only time with tell how good he will become.I dont see anything special in him yet so I cant say. Dele on the other hand can be a genius or an oaf. Become the hero or the bum at the end a cheap bar.

        • AccringtonSpurs October 3, 2017 at 11:50 am

Winks is not the player you want him to be – he’s not a fabregas-type. More Scott Parker, but possibly with better distribution. It’s unfair to expect him to play a creative role, he’s not a deep-lying playmaker. Just a very good CM/DM.

          • UnkleTaff October 3, 2017 at 12:06 pm

He’s an industrious little f*cker who is always looking to get the ball forward as quickly as possible.

          • ronwol196061 October 3, 2017 at 12:30 pm

I dont expect him to be a Fabregas. What Fabregas has is a natural talent. Dele has a natural talent too.Natural talent is no guarantee for success though.
            Can he be a Gerrard?

    • mattspurs October 3, 2017 at 12:00 pm

We scored more goals than anybody else in the last two seasons! How many times in the past two seasons have we failed to score? 5 games last season and 6 the season before. Of the teams that stopped us scoring Man U (x2) Liverpool (x2) Chelsea and Leicester in their championship winning season could all be described as good teams . West Ham (x2) have beaten us 1-0 twice in their cup final and quite frankly kind of deserved their wins. Everton got a 0-0 in an even match but really we’ve only failed to breach parked buses twice in 2 seasons (Sunderland and Bournemouth). Add in the Swansea game this season but that still just leaves 3 occasions.

      It’s pretty bloody good.

      • ronwol196061 October 3, 2017 at 12:36 pm

It is good there is no question.excellent in fact but we should also be looking to improve. You cant stand still. After our great sixties success we failed to follow up on it and compete with others for top players. Decisions were not good players got older and it wasnt till the 80’s that we got something going.
We are not as good as we could be. We need another CM with talent.A talisman and pivot in the middle

Jeez – until we win the CL treble of course there’s room for improvement (even after that we’d only be great if we did it back to back!)
First season under Poch our defence needed serious work and we went from 4th worst to best defence. Second season we had our best ever PL points. Last season we improved on our points, goal tally by 17 and we let in 9 fewer goals than the season before. We are 100% improving.

Just imagine if Poch let him play the full 90 minutes!
