Dele Alli.

As England boss Gareth Southgate says, it’s always difficult to know what the benchmark of being described as ‘World Class’ is.

Performing consistently and winning medals and trophies is a keen indicator. Another is being an unstoppable force of nature who cannot stop scoring goals a la Harry Kane. According to Southgate (and anyone else with eyes in their head) Dele isn’t world class yet.

Dele Alli fails to tick any of those boxes. And of course this wretched clip features the boy doing some effeminate variant of paper rock scissors whilst supposedly training with England.

This has nothing to do with football and is the sort of thing one would more commonly expect to see young girls doing either side of a skipping rope in a school playground.

Dele Alli isn’t vaguely World Class, this season he’s not even come close to being Tottenham class. Maybe he needs to focus his attention on playing football? Just a thought.

Why does it matter if Dele is world class? It’s a specious criteria, entirely down to the subjective judgement of god knows whom.

It’s up to Alli to forget about labels and get on and earn all that money he’s paid, to the satisfaction of the fans and the coaches. That’s what counts.

England were woeful last night and were woeful against Malta tbh. What has Southgate achieved to deserve the England job ahead of somebody like say Tony Pulis? I fear Southy will be getting a call from Pizza Hut after next years World Cup…

Deli has a mean streak, making him captain isn’t actually the worste idea I’ve heard by a long stretch. That sort of responsibility would force him to grow up quick smart, & I don’t see him being scared about airing his views. He’ll come good!

    • McG 鈿解毥 October 6, 2017 at 12:34 pm

      (England captain, not Spurs!!)

  • AccringtonSpurs October 6, 2017 at 12:24 pm

I hope we play more one-touch footie this season. The play we made for the second goal against Huddersfield was sublime. That’s the Tottenham I’d like to see every week – producing great team goals.

I hope Poch has got them practising one-touch manoeuvres for the Madrid leg at Wembley. It could work.

Its the flow they makes the game great

    • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:30 pm

Agreed but unconvinced that games coming up against Liverpool, Manure and Arse will be as accommodating!

    • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 6, 2017 at 12:33 pm

That’s all they used to do. I know El Tel did, there’s an old Spurs training session on you tube, they stretch out then play a 2 touch match till the end!

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 6, 2017 at 12:33 pm

        That was Pleat era.

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 12:22 pm

I could take his mucking about at times but he often runs with the ball half hearted as if he can do what he wants and turns it on when he wants but the problem is he doesnt do it enough.
You can get by with some great moments its true. But its got to be much more than what he currently does.

    • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:25 pm

Ron you admired “lazy Berbatov” but critical of Alli?

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 12:29 pm

Yes…Berbatov turned it on when he wanted but I never considered him lazy. Plus times are a lot different now.The game has speeded up a lot and defences are tougher it takes more work
I was appreciative of Berbas skill compared to the rest of our players. he was takent and could be a Greaves or a Gilzean. No I wouldnt knock Berba

  • James147 October 6, 2017 at 12:05 pm

Dear Football, please decide what “world class” actually means. Cheers thanks a lot, the fans.

    • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:08 pm

Messi, Ronaldo and De Bruyne to name but 3!

      • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:16 pm

Researching one definition of a” world class player” is a player who can consistently win games himself. This is something which is mostly applied to strikers, but defenders are capable of doing this as well. Domestically for club Messi has broken records, won it all. On the international stage: Nought!

  • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 11:58 am

Back to England captaincy. Southgate: Kane no captain. Gary Chaill for sure. Imagine Roy Keane tolerating that non performance would send shivers down the whole team!

      *Cahill

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:50 am

Not sure what we will do when Rose gets back maybe better to ease him in and politically play both giving them the same amount of opportunities. It would be silly to relegate either one to reserve status.

    • 61SpursNut馃尠 October 6, 2017 at 11:52 am

      Thanks.

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:54 am

        No.Thank YOU!

    • McG 鈿解毥 October 6, 2017 at 11:54 am

The point of building a squad is to have depth which in turn allows you to compete on all four (or at least three) different fronts. I’m expecting Rose to play his part this season, & see the pair rotated to good effect. I’d still rather we didn’t sell unless it’s abroad, & we have Sessy or Shaw already in the bag.

      • AccringtonSpurs October 6, 2017 at 11:56 am

I’m more curious about Celtic’s Tierney who keeps getting rave reviews – “our best player” etc. from Celtic fans.

        • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:01 pm

          + Monsieur Griffiths!

          • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 12:02 pm

We have to start looking for another CM

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:57 am

Yes would like to also see Rose team up with LLorente on crosses in some games so maybe Poch will rest Harry Kane fr a game and give LLorente the gig. We need to score a few with our barnets

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:48 am

Not sure what we will do when Rose gets back maybe better to ease him in and politically play both give

    • 61SpursNut馃尠 October 6, 2017 at 11:52 am

Sorry, could you expand on that?

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:53 am

Give them both a go in the Madrid series
        The page keeps jumping about

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:43 am

I do think the kid Davinson-Sanchez is amazing. He didnt miss a beat coming into this team. Nestled between two seasoned internationals,Toby and Jan,he not only didnt look like an apprentice (yes he cost a lot but it was his first game) but it seemed to me he took the game on like he’d been with us for 2 years. Cool, confident, respectful and was sensible with his choices.
Very impressive. Could have something very serious there.

    • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:45 am

In his last game he did make a mitake but recovered really well. I think he really could be a legend

      • AccringtonSpurs October 6, 2017 at 11:54 am

I think he’s been very good – just think he’s got a red card and a penalty in him…

        • McG 鈿解毥 October 6, 2017 at 11:56 am

Fancy having Poch, Verts & Toby as your tutors!! The lad’s got it made 馃檪

        • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:58 am

They all have red cards in them

          • AccringtonSpurs October 6, 2017 at 12:04 pm

            with Sanchez, we’ll see.

            • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 12:11 pm

I like the fact that he does take chances as this is the best way to learn. But I also think his choices and timing are good so that counters it a bit. He isnt a hot head I dont think

    • David Dillenberg October 6, 2017 at 12:04 pm

Apparently Sanchez is vulnerable caught out of position to the ball over the top?

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 12:15 pm

        Why?
We play a high line but he has stayed connected a bit behind the others. When you play the high line of course the systems vulnerability is over the top. A great pass and a great run can beat the high line. Part of the idea of the high line is to trap the attacker both pushing him back and snareing him into offside. But good players can seriously test it. Sanche will do as well as anyone else.He will become a star

    • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:36 am

I dont like Tim Sherwood but when I listen to him think he is quite intelligent as a pundit, actually one of the best.

It was a pre/post match press conference and the media questions were about Dele Alli who wasn’t playing. Southgate should have told them to discuss the match and forget the loaded questions.

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 10:59 am

Eriksen scored a cracking goal yesterday pure class. He took a bouncing ball, sidestepped the defender turned and hit it beautifully into the net. As much as anything else it reminded me of Greaves

    • AccringtonSpurs October 6, 2017 at 11:12 am

      good goal.

He’ll be instrumental for us next two seasons. Don’t think we’ll let him go till he’s 27.

I’ve realised I’d rather have him fit every game than injured by going hard into risky tackles. Let Wanyama and Dier do that bit.

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:26 am

        I agree. Y

      • 61SpursNut馃尠 October 6, 2017 at 11:26 am

This, except I will chain him to our ranks until he gets incontinent.

      • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:33 am

I agree. He is avery good goalscorer and an adept creative player. Two things I noticed with him was his confidence has gone up a ton and the fact that he is playing more positively now going forward more than back. That part may very well be Poch’s coaching. But for the longest time he was adding to the possession states and going nowhere a lot,now he has been much more direct in his play. Its refreshing. If he muscled up he could maybe one day take the Modric role but he is a also an excellent goalscorer. Has a little of Greaves in him

    Stop believing the Hype

    • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 11:00 am

      What hype?

  • ronwol196061 October 6, 2017 at 10:56 am

Dele definately needs a kick in the bollocks. But its fine to have some fun with the lads even if it is rock paper scissors. They key is for him to work hard in games. To earn his living for 90 minutes and not just a 30 second highlight.
