Some positivity on the Dele Alli saga! Harry Kane’s experience of the modern game is comparatively speaking extraordinary. No kicking a ball about for a lower league side and getting spotted fastback route for the boy Kane.

Long and hard was the way for Harry, endless changes in coaching staff, loan spells of questionable value and an increasing suspicion rom this two bob blogger that it was the sheer will of the now 24 year old that drove him ever onwards to continuously improve and endeavour to be the best (with whom he is without doubt nestled amongst in all respects bar that so far most illusive one – trophies).

I don’t believe that most lads Kane’s age are as mature or have the awareness that he has developed, and to hear Harry say he thinks Dele will learn and come good only adds weight to the hope that it’ll happen.

As Harry rightly says it’s easy to forget just how young Dele is. Just 21 yet has 100 games for Spurs and 35 goals – he’s a talent for sure but I’m not sure that he’s even nearly the finished article yet. As others have said on this blog, Dele is full of great moments but has yet to run a game. He needs to turn his great 20 minutes into great 60 minutes and then into great 90 minutes before he’s truly World class. He’s found a role with Poch at the moment where he’s given more freedom than anyone else – at some point he’ll have to drop deeper to involve himself more.

HTF is anyone going to forget how young Dele is when we’re reminded on an hourly basis by his apologists?!

I think part of why people perceive Dele to be less involved or to have less influence on the game is partly from a shift in our formation. In the initial season or two, he played a lot on the left, swapping into the middle/#10, in a 4-2-3-1. Now he’s playing more in a narrower 2 behind Kane in a 3-4-2-1.

It seems like that is giving him a little less space to operate in, and taking away some of the pressing/tracking back duties, to free him to do more dinks over the top and flicks in the area, and to make those well timed arrivals into the box.

Maybe I’m totally off base and it’s just a lack of effort, but the positional shift is my working hypothesis at the moment.

    • Harry Hotspur October 7, 2017 at 11:06 am

Your working hypothesis does more work than he does.

It’s not a perception either. Opta stats are based on activity with the ball.

Just been watching your old mate Alisdair Gold give one of his regular video updates of the new stadium.

Noticed some containers behind the south stand called Hanjin. This shipping line went out of business earlier this year. Just wonder if Danny Boy bought them up on the cheap for resale?

They are a constant threat and you can’t take your eye off them – Dele is threatening for 20 minutes and pops up with goals. As overall 90 minutes, Aaron Lennon had more dominant games than Dele has. Dele just seems to have a very good knack of scoring lots of different types of goals.

Sadly I’m not sure any of the current Spurs team are World Class – Dele isn’t the worst in our team but he’s certainly not one of the best at the moment. Maybe, maybe if he can really start running’ tings he’ll be World Class – driving us to back to back PL and CL titles would help

    • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? October 6, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Weird. I just been watching some old Newcastle games with Gascoigne(its quiet here). When they put Ali, Barkley, wiltsure etc in a sentence with Gazza it don’t do em any favours. He was running games at 19/20 , everything positive was going through him. Deles never going to be that player. But who is? The press should drop out that particular name when new talent is concerned.

      • Freund or Foe October 6, 2017 at 4:28 pm

I was at Gazza’s first Spurs game, a pre-season tournament at Wembley. Dirty gooners beat us 5-0, Gazza was fucking dire, and missed an open goal at 0-0. My thoughts at the time were what the fuck have we wasted our money on now? I might not have thought fuck, I was maybe 11-12, but I was definitely unimpressed. Funny old game, innit.
