Tom From East Upper: ‘We Flunked It’

Tom From East Upper: ‘We Flunked It’
A most welcome Guest Blog from our man in the East Upper.

They say attack is the best form of defence, and that’s exactly what Manchester City did yesterday.

Whilst we didn’t play the best game of our so far very impressive season, City threw everything at us from the start. Guardiola has built a reputation throughout Europe on performances like this, and has never been beaten by the same manager in any one season before. And you could see why. 2 nil down, draw 2-2.. It’s these results that convince some supporters that we’ve finally put our ‘Spursyness’ to bed. However for me, this was the complete opposite.

In the past 2 seasons we’ve been given golden opportunities to take advantage of truly glorious opportunities; Arsenal at home (top for a brief, fleeting moment) and West Ham away (great chance to breathe down Leicester’s neck) last year are 2 obvious examples. I see yesterday’s match in the same way. Simply put, we flunked it.

It sounds harsh, but whichever way you try to sugar coat it it’s true. To achieve big things you must win these massive, season defining games. Don’t get me wrong, City and Chelsea at home were great examples of how far we’ve come under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership and I believe we will get there, but we need some reinforcements.

City were better than us yesterday and when you face quality opposition, occasionally they will be better than you – that’s football. It would be easy to say Poch “got it wrong, we could’ve played 4 at the back, why didn’t Son start?” Hugo made 2 seismic mistakes, but how many key saves has he made so far this season? City have spent a fortune on quality players and all were there to see yesterday.

I totally understand our transfer policy and realise until we have our new stadium we’ll have to make do with ‘punching above our weight’, but if we are to realise our ambitions sooner rather than later we must go headfirst into the transfer market and buy that special, creative player that we so desperately need. £40m+ on someone who can grab a game like that by the scruff of the neck and produce a moment of magic.

Our team is missing a big leader in the final third of the pitch, a Silva, a De Bruyne, a Hazard – all we’re missing is that sprinkle of fairy dust.

We could, and perhaps should’ve been 4 or 5 down at half time yesterday. But we weren’t. We’ve picked up 5 points from Liverpool and West Ham at home, and City away in games that if we were being totally honest, we deserved nothing from. Whichever way you cut it up that’s improvement, as well as the honest truth. Hard fought, resilient, occasionally lucky – Tottenham!!

Improvement is the order of the day in my book. That’s what’s important. We have a great manager and a great group of players. This young team are getting better, more confident in their own abilities and we must not underestimate our achievements this season so far.

We are 7 points better off than this time last year – we’d actually be top if we had the same points after 22 games in 15/16! OK, so at this moment we’re still not quite able to crack the whip when it’s really needed and as the Heineken commercial used to say, “it’s not ready yet” but it will be if we loosen the perse strings to bring in that bit of something special this month.

Averaging the most amount of shots on goal per game, 2nd best defence in the league, joint 3rd highest scorers, Eriksen 2nd highest amount of assists, Kane a goal away from highest goalscorer so far with Dele Alli not too far behind.. Fine margins.

14 games left, 42 points left to play for. There’s plenty of time for further improvement yet, as much in the boardroom as on the pitch.

they were better than us for most of the game but we didn’t lose, we gifted them two goals and we created two very good goals, they have a brilliant front 5, we have a better 11 IMO. If we can teach Hugo how to distribute the ball better, we would have been under less pressure Saturday than we were. all in all we are in great shape when compared to 3 years ago. still need to improve squad by 2 I would say

To be fair, City played very well. I did not expect their flair players, their front 5, to play with anything like the energy and aggression that they showed. They pressed us very high up and I thought we were tactically naive continuing to try and play out from the back and frequently played ourselves into trouble. City ‘did us’ on their first goal with old-fashioned Route 1 (plus a bit of luck), but I thought it was tactically astute from Guardiola and maybe we could have reciprocated the favour, given the age and slowness of their back 5. Perhaps our one deficiency against employing such a tactic is that none of our front players possess the blazing speed of a Sterling or Sane.

We gave them way too much room to maneuver in and on their side they gave us much less. So it would have taken a lot more quality and desire to circumvent that and create. Its where Eriksen falls down. He hasnt got the edge to take it on,he is good when he is allowed space (like he did once on he wing for one of our goals) but doesnt do enough in these important games.
Dele has the edge for sure and although he creates,he has different focus,a good one but couldnt call him creative. So we are missing there at a higher level

First time ever i cashed in a bet, had Ajax4/5, Juve 8/13, Leverkusen10/11 and Fenerbache the last to KO at 16:00, by HT they had 4 players on yellows ( ended with 7) but were 1-0 in front against Basaksehir the Turkish Super League leaders who had gone 17 games undefeated, so cashed out at HT for £95:17 rather than wait (would have collected around £130 as they won 1-0).

After Chelskis win over Hull IMO our title aspirations are hanging by a thread.
9 points to make up is a mountain to climb and just can’t see it but you never know.

      • caveman January 22, 2017 at 7:27 pm

Because you expected any other outcome from Hull away at Stamford Bridge.

              DD, forget the title mate.

Concentrate on whether we can finish above Arsenal 😉

Like the laws of defying gravity it’s a tough ask as we never do!

    • UnkleTaff January 22, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Victory over Hull was always the most likely outcome today, but in two games’ time Chelsea’s lead over us could very easily be down to five (or even four) points … with 14 games left to play.

The title race is far from over.

      • David Dillenberg January 22, 2017 at 7:43 pm

Noted but key defensive injuries could eventually take it’s toll.

        • UnkleTaff January 22, 2017 at 7:46 pm

…as could an injury (or loss of form) to either (or both of) Hazard or Costa. Take those two players out of Chelsea and they become very ordinary.

  • 61SpursNut🌰 January 22, 2017 at 7:20 pm

  • A waddle and a fork January 22, 2017 at 7:19 pm

Very interesting that we have played more hard games than the rest- all to fight for. When everything is gravy we look like a fantastic ‘team’ but when we need to dig deep players like Eriksen for example will never ever be able to command the others. We are a Gazza or a Bale away from being an incredible team. Maybe one of the best Spurs teams ever!

  • chrism January 22, 2017 at 7:18 pm

    East Stand
    Sure we flunked it.
We flunked it against the most cash rich team in the league with supposedly ‘the best manager in the world’ at the helm, away from home when they were looking to bounce back from the Everton defeat and revenge from drubbing they got from us at The Lane.
Yes they got it right, route one with the best forwards in the league. We weren’t at our best but if we’d have fully ‘flunked it’ then we would’t have come back from 2-0 down. We’d have collapsed and folded like spinach in a warm pan as we’ve seen us do countless times before.
If you were expecting us to win at a canter then yes ‘flunk’ it we did, if you expected us to not be soft centred and write the game off at 2-0 as we have before we didn’t flunk anything. Citeh threw everything at us, it was a must win for them in front of their fans and it took two massive rickets from Hugo to facilitate that win.
Had that not happened we’d have stuck to the task, gone a goal up and picked them off on the break. As a performance it wasn’t good but from 2-0 down at that kind of place and not playing well to draw turned their potential flunk into swell earned point. That’s footy and we move on…

This is the best answer, you are absolutely right sir. When did we expect we can go sauntering into other top 4 teams stadiums and get handed wins on a plate. This was called ‘Fighting for something’. Yep, City could have scored more, but they did’nt, and we defended when we had to, and got the goals when we had the chances. I even thought we would pinch it at the end. This was so far from ‘Flunking It’. We used to get 5 and 6 put past us every year without reply up there. Hugo had a mare, but i cannot possibly criticise the man after all he has done for us these last few years. This is the second year we will be challenging for the title, and this young team are getting better and will win stuff. I think that unless we win every single game 4-0, and not allow the other team a touch of the ball!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree if anyone flunked lloris did. I don’t hold him responsible but with out them we win, they were better but as Leicester proved last year and Everton last weak you haven’t always gotta be better just gotta take your chances and that we sort of did

    • McG ⚽⚽ January 22, 2017 at 6:48 pm

He’s well above average, that’s how he manages more assists and goals than Ozil for example, just needs a bit more consistency.

The summary above is very fair. Not our best performance by a long chalk and frankly we stole a point. However, given City’s humiliating 4-0 drubbing last weekend, I felt all week that we might be on the receiving end of a backlash.

I must admit Guardiola’s attacking line-up took some serious balls and I thought to myself, they will need to outwork us or else an aging Yaya Toure and that brittle defence is going to get overrun. Unfortunately that is exactly what they did. Their midfield worked their socks off, especially first half and frankly we didn’t.

As a consequence, the parallels with those Arsenal and West Ham games last season are well drawn. This could have been an ultimate statement game of our title credentials and we flunked it. The only consolation, fixture wise, is that we now have the least number of remaining games against our top 6 rivals and two of those 3 games are at home.

    • Ronwol1960-61 January 22, 2017 at 6:27 pm

Their experience dominated our running them ragged way….they were calm but still kept up their own pace, their good passing and flow and their toughness and detrmination in defence. We walked into walls.
They played us very well. In games lately we have ominated the other teams with pace and toughness and determination but we needed a bit more class to compete. Eriken has been great for the past month but wimped through this one. That was a big problem. We created little

      • coys1882 January 22, 2017 at 7:13 pm

    Andre & pochettino
Firstly, u know nothing about me
Secondly, Lol its not witchcraft..there is something called GoodLuck and ill-luck
every great man or potential great man knows this
There is something called ‘keeping cards close to your chest’
‘celebrating before being almost certainly sure about something can clearly jinx it dude’
It’s probably not you ofcourse, i’m being silly i often blame others when i’m pissed like right now..
but its best to wait till the end..

    When you’re in a hole …

  • 61SpursNut🌰 January 22, 2017 at 5:55 pm

If two players are involved in a bad head on head clash shouldn’t they both be taken off for safety reasons?

  • BrizzleSpur January 22, 2017 at 5:55 pm

Grolsch. The advert that goes: ‘Shtop, it’s not ready yet…” is a Grolsch advert. I once loved the stuff but I can’t stand the gassy gear anymore.

Good summery otherwise. We’re good enough to fluke it against Pep’s millionaires. We can be confident that our coach see’s it for what it is. He won’t blow smoke up his player’s arses – HR style. They’ll be getting a bollocking, rest assured. The last team I knew of that had a squad capable of fluking it and a coach who wouldn’t tolerate anything less than great football was Sir Alex’s Manchester United.

And I don’t think it’s just about getting a stadium built for higher revenues. I think it’s about acclaim too. Hanging around the top end of the table and making headlines will encourage young talent to come to us. Having an exciting squad in itself is an asset and sorts the wheat from the chaff. Maybe I’m jumping the gun, it wouldn’t be the first time. But I think Spurs are earning a new identity under Poch. The team I watched growing up was crap. This team by comparison is looking great.

    • Harry Hotspur January 22, 2017 at 6:28 pm

A fancy stadium is nothing but a ‘KICK ME’ sign if you’re not delivering fancy football.

      • BrizzleSpur January 22, 2017 at 7:15 pm

A bit like Wembley for us this year, then. I would of preferred a smaller ground with fans packed in tight and close to the action. A real harrowing place for an opposition team to visit.

        • seattlespursguy January 22, 2017 at 5:53 pm

And a smallish lad like Ryan running into a draft horse like Cahill was only having one winner

  • BigChiv January 22, 2017 at 5:45 pm

Can someone please explain to me what the fixation is with net spend in the transfer market?

Surely it is about how well the players you buy perform, how consistent they are and what influence they have over results, rather than how much they cost.

Otamendi, De Bruyne and Mangala cost City 127M

Verts, Toby & Alli cost us 26.5M

Are City’s lot 5 times better than ours?

    • Harry Hotspur January 22, 2017 at 6:26 pm

The net spend business is the last refuge of Spurs fans who have forgotten that the aim of the game is to win trophies, and not get gold stars from your bookkeeper.

Normal human beings don’t use the phrase ‘net spend’ in their everyday life.

      • McG ⚽⚽ January 22, 2017 at 6:43 pm

        Accountants do..

      • melcyid January 22, 2017 at 7:42 pm

I had to spend on a net the other day

    • AccringtonSpurs January 22, 2017 at 6:28 pm

The gulf in quality between De Bruyne and Eriksen was there for all to see yesterday.

If we spent £40-50m on one quality player we’d be up another level.

But it’s our bench more than anything else. Son, Sissoko, Nkoudou and Janssen aren’t going to set the world alight. You could argue the case for Son because he can score, but it’s the rest of his game that needs upgrading.

      • Ronwol1960-61 January 22, 2017 at 6:29 pm

        How good ia NKoudoo?????????

You dont know Den,nor does Poch

        • Ronwol1960-61 January 22, 2017 at 6:30 pm

and nor do I but he has shown some real good attributes

          • AccringtonSpurs January 22, 2017 at 6:33 pm

true. but we bought him and don’t play him.

our bench needs players we will play and who can add qUALOTY

            • Ronwol1960-61 January 22, 2017 at 6:35 pm

Sure he needs some game.Just like Wimmer did.But they are looked at as secondary and third players until they play well.I dont think Poch manages the rotations well,If you are good enough for the squad you should be good enough to play some league games

    • Mattspurs January 22, 2017 at 7:28 pm

We used to balance the books by selling our best players, now we offload our worst players. Whilst we don’t have the very best players we’ve got some pretty good ones and more importantly probably the most balanced squad in the league. City and Liverpool may spend big but have huge weaknesses still there to be exploited

  • Caspurs♿️ January 22, 2017 at 5:42 pm

Has Tom Fuddlestone scored a hat-trick yet?

    • Spurstacus 💋 January 22, 2017 at 6:37 pm

Huddleston requires ~ 150 shots on goal to score one goal. Has he had 450 shots, yet?

  • OfftheShelf January 22, 2017 at 5:39 pm

If ManC strikers keep missing the target it’s not ‘luck’ it’s bad finishing, all that money and they were fortunate that Lloris threw a couple of wobblies or they would not have drawn they would have lost, undeservedly.

    • UnkleTaff January 22, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Indeed. When opposition ‘keepers have worldies against us people waste no time at all in criticising our players for shooting too close to them.

  • Paco January 22, 2017 at 5:36 pm

We need Lamela back but their is something Posh is not telling us about his injury, hope we are not in trouble with him,hip trouble, hope it is not another Willem Korsten with the degenerative hip disease. He is out a long time with no sign ofcoming back.He was just coming good and a great assett to the team.

    • Horndog 😎 January 22, 2017 at 5:44 pm

Actually Poch has just now said that Lamela’s scan was good and he will start training pronto.

  • Andreas January 22, 2017 at 5:34 pm

How annoying , some saying city should have won.You only win when you score more than the opposition. We were second best but still managed to score two goals but their goals were gifts, but I still love Hugo no matter what, the best goalie in the league.
I am so glad the ref didn’t give the penalty to city, remember when Balotelli tried to cave in Scottie Parker’s chest a while back and Howard Webb didn’t do anything , only for him to score a penalty when he should have been sent off. Fuck city and all the journos and pundits.
We will always be the nearly team, and whenever we make progress, we somehow mess it up.Maybe this time may be different but Levy needs to splash money on any player Poch wants. And rebuff any offers for our best players.

  • Caspurs♿️ January 22, 2017 at 5:33 pm

We played our first poor game in about two months, away, against one of the most expensive teams ever assembled, yet we scored two nice goals while they scored two off of absolute howlers from one of the usually most reliable keepers around.

I’d say there’s a case to made that we were unlucky yesterday.
