Through the Lilywhite tinted hue of your spectacles it can be easy to forget that Pochettino is in fact a novice coach and as phrase goes, is doing his growing up in public.

When asked – ahead of the North London Derby – where Alderweireld was, the Argentinian became tetchy:

“Sorry? After the game I need to explain this? You think I need to explain why I picked one or another? Why? Sorry, I don’t understand your question. Why I pick 11 players? Because I need to pick 11 players. I don’t understand your question. I picked a player that I believe are the best to play in every game, but, if I explain why I don’t play Alderweireld, I need to explain why for Danny Rose, Wanyama, Llorente, Michel Vorm, Harry Winks – I don’t understand your question.”

I take a view that the problem lies with the chumps asking the questions. 99% of the stuff pitched at Poch is disingenuous stuff that is more about creating clicks than it is about eliciting an understanding of how things operate at Hotspur Way.

‘POCH STUMBLES WHEN QUESTIONED STILL NO NEW ALDERWEIRELD DEAL’ is easier to write than the exceptionally dull truth. The club is seeking to help an ageing player is making a sound return to first team action after what became and unexpectedly troublesome injury.

So ask yourself what’s nearer the truth, Spurs have sought and agreed a special dispensation from the Football Association and the Premier League to sell Toby to Manchester United next week, or a duty of care is being followed and it’s hopeful that the Belgian International can complete robustly when he returns, perhaps even against Juventus?

It might be an idea to vet the audience at the pressers more closely.

    East Stand

For me Poch has just come through a defining run of games and has pretty much answered his critics.

Manure at home, Liverpool away and the NLD (with the distraction of the Newport replay tucked in between) looked fairly daunting, do badly and our season is looking shot, do well and it’s all to play for.

This was Poch and the team stepping it up when it mattered, very pleasing and rather awesome in fact. Not ‘Spursy’ at all.

Poch is still a tactical klutz though, bloody useless Argie bar steward…

    Poch is a tactical gimp.

Word Origin and History for gimp.

        It was inferred…

          By whom?

          • East Stand February 11, 2018 at 2:29 pm

            H, for a start .

            • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 2:31 pm

Im not sure he said he was a klutz.I mean we all go over the top a bit at times and he is selling newspapers….

              • East Stand February 11, 2018 at 2:37 pm

Ok, the word klutz wasn’t used. I’m perhaps making more of it but I feel the guy needs to be left alone a bit more, off the back of couple of poor results he has serous questions asked about his credibility.

Look back at this season so far, at an unfamiliar home ground (becoming more familiar admittedly) we have dominated Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd and Real Madrid. We did far better at Anfield that Citeh, who are praised to the hilt all the time for smashing dross at home 5-0 or whatever.

Poch is the best since Bill Nic, let’s stop beating around the fakky bush here…

                • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 2:43 pm

Id agree with that. That Poch is the best manager and this is the best team since the double team.
Harry wants pOch to win a pot and the pressure will be off.
For me its always about the quality of our football.
You are right we have to take a check on the performances and results over the season. I would like to see us do better against the minnows. The Double team did.I want to see that with us. And believe that its also about tactics and we needed some more creativity. Moura could produce that. I hope so as it takes a few creative players to get through

                  • East Stand February 11, 2018 at 2:54 pm

This team isn’t perfect but it’s relatively cheaply assembled compared to those around us and we are up and at them.

                    • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 2:57 pm

Whatever Poch and Levy (Levy hired Poch) bought the players we have and realistically they are worth much much more than we paid for them. Thats never looked at is it. It is in business though. Its called assets. At this point you probably want to discuss Sissoko. But Sissoko could have been a Poch Pick or a joint pick. Poch plays him a lot

              • East Stand February 11, 2018 at 2:39 pm

H, is the arch cynic we all know that but I’m often surprised at how many take the bait and lay into Poch without looking at the bigger picture.

                • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 2:45 pm

I check out all the games I see and see where we are at. I applaud Poch at times and do the opposite at times but overall I think he is the best for us. I feel the same way about Eriksen.

                  • Tom Sherwood February 11, 2018 at 2:47 pm

And you rate players in games you haven’t even watched, don’t forget that !

    JUVE v US LOT.

What i am saying – in response to playing three at the back etc is.. we try to keep it tight-as in every match, that’s our system and Poch’s raison d’etre and we’re very good at it. It does not follow that we need to change our formation just because it’s Juve away. Yes extra focus (‘ficus’ for viewers in Ronglish) can be given to keeping it especially tight by tweaking certain players roles but just coz it’s Juve away we don’t NEED to go three at the back. Poch may well decide to do just that, all i’m saying is it’s not nailed on and it’s not the only answer to coming away with a result.

Yes Juve are a very decent and experienced CL team but they aint used to playing outfits like us. Our game is and has proved to be very difficult for a lot of these Europeans teams to deal with and i’m sure Poch will be looking every bit as much at how we can hurt them than how they can hurt us. They are good, they deserve respect but not too much.

    • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 1:43 pm

Its Wronglish. Keep it tight away and expand at home

    • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 1:48 pm

      Re Tobes/Sanchez etc

Sanchez will be a fantastic player but for now he is suspect due to making a few bad decisions here and there over the course of the last month. With Tobes next to him he will be fine. Don’t get me wrong he will be a future King

My two-penneth: i don’t think Juve are all that and are very beatable. I’d argue away at Pooh is a more difficult match; And let’s face it we’ve been playing away all facking season! Grit has been built and the boys seem to be relishing these CL ties home or away, so why not just play our game and get after them. Ergo; Not entirely convinced Poch will go three at the back..

    • Tom Sherwood February 11, 2018 at 12:44 pm

Your tactics would see us out of contention after the first leg.

I agree Glos, it’s what we try to do and are largely succesful at for every match so i question the assumption that we need to go three at the back to do that.

      • paul February 11, 2018 at 12:48 pm

Please do point out the part in my post where i outlined the use of specific tactics

        • Tom Sherwood February 11, 2018 at 12:55 pm

So why not just play our game and get after them.
Juve are one of the most experienced CL outfits, defensively very strong with a creative midfield and 3 experienced Strikers who could hurt us if we underestimate them. Poch will have a game plan but this tie will be won at Wembley and not with a gung Ho attitude in Turin.

          • paul February 11, 2018 at 12:58 pm

See the response i gave to Glos above. Playing our game IS being tight, it doesn’t mean being gung ho defensively

There have been so many times during my lifetime when it’s been predicted the club will implode if a player or manager leaves i.e.

So if Toby,Poch or anyone else think they can do better elsewhere let them go,we will be fine.

Did you see what happened to our goal difference and goals conceded record the season we bought him?

          • paul February 11, 2018 at 12:45 pm

I did and up until the last few months i would have agreed but Jan has stepped up in ways i never imagined possible and sanchez has slotted in pretty nicely; with Foyth in the background etc. So i arrived at HK being the only truly irreplacable with tin-tin a close second just due to the incredible difficulty of securing that type of player in general and specifically one that would fit our system and work ethic

            • Accy February 11, 2018 at 12:48 pm

And yet our defence is not as solid without Toby. We no longer lead the pack as far as fewest goals conceded goes. That is what helps you win titles. Toby is AS important as Kane.

Disagree on both points. Look, Tobes is world class and i want to keep him as much as the next man but i no longer think he falls into that category, which is no bad thing

                • Accy February 11, 2018 at 12:53 pm

It’s your opinion – so absolutely fine.

I just don’t understand why you’d sell the best defender in the prem for the past 3 seasons (injuries aside), and be happy to concede more goals because of it.

                  • paul February 11, 2018 at 12:56 pm

At what point did i ever say i would be happy to do that, jayzus Accy talk about putting words in my mouth, he’s one of the last players i’d be happy to sell, just not thee last

Not sure if more important than Kane but really important. When he plays we are solid and Sanchez plays better

                • Horndog 🇺🇸 February 11, 2018 at 12:54 pm

True, I would also play better with Toby along side me. 😬

Ledley always made his partners look better, think he gave them confidence as does Toby .
But Toby is nearly 30, another few years top flight and he is also picking up injuries which may affect his ability and possibly pace.
                    Enjoy him while we can.

Meant to add that Poch has done this regularly; when his mind’s made up about who’s going to play when, he doesn’t waste spots on the bench. It shows clarity of thought and a realisation that if he had a (returning from injury) player on the bench in a game he really did not want to use them his hand could be forced and they could end up more badly crocked

    Lloris
    Aurier, Toby, Sanchez, Verts, Davies
    Victor
    Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela
    Kane

Dele and Son available off the bench

    • David Dillenberg February 11, 2018 at 12:26 pm

Aurier? Why the need to rotate full backs?

      • Horndog 🇺🇸 February 11, 2018 at 12:27 pm

Wingbacks against those guys. Also, significant CL experience

        • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 12:29 pm

          I agree

      • gloster1861 February 11, 2018 at 12:28 pm

Trippier’s crossing will be required against Palace. Plenty of matches for him and Aurier to share, it’s for Poch to match the back to the opposition.

        • Gus February 11, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Victor and Moussa should be able to stifle Juve in MF

        • David Dillenberg February 11, 2018 at 12:30 pm

        • gloster1861 February 11, 2018 at 12:44 pm

I think Aurier will be get more joy in the CL. Different to the PL where the pressure can be relentless.

          • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 12:50 pm

its natural to put Aurier in anyway European experience+ Trippier using a lot of energy yesterday plus his strong tackling

              • DAVID February 11, 2018 at 12:21 pm

Take a look at my local club Billericay, manager ./ owner beino investigated for alleged blackmail and Pennant left yesterday following porn allegations.
Sad thing is I’ve seen some brilliant football there this season and at one stage gates were close to 1500,up from 300 in previous years but Konchevsky and Pennant have now left and only Ohara is left.
Gates now dropping it will probably end in tears but fun while it lasts.

                • Harry Hotspur February 11, 2018 at 12:30 pm

I know, pretty distinctive tattoos too,how stupid do you have to be to think you won’t be recognised especially when it was his wife in the video.
Shame though, him Konchevsky and more recently O’ Hara bought real quality to the side and put bums on seats ,Ohara still hits a quality pass although he looks like he’s carrying some timber.

                  Pennant and O’Hara…

    Borussia Dortmund

What we know is our best players we have protected by extended their contracts. In Toby’s case he may want to sign or he may want to leave.Surely we dont have the answer to that. Is it just the contract…er the money. Is it about winning some serious stuff? We dont know.
Its possible Toby is stalling because he isnt sure yet.
The fact that Levy has protected all our best players kinds of tells you where he is at.We just dont know where Toby is at

    • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 12:00 pm

is Toby fit even maybe he has a niggle.

      • Horndog 🇺🇸 February 11, 2018 at 12:04 pm

Toby says he is just fine. I believe yesterday’s omission was to protect him. I am all in for him starting against Juve.

        • ronwol196061 February 11, 2018 at 12:06 pm

Yes Im sure that was the case. Playing 2 CB’s yesterday made us more fluid with the extra man in midfield. For Juventus we could go back to the 3 and work off the counter

          • Accy February 11, 2018 at 12:21 pm

My thoughts exactly – completely change the system for Juve away and go 5-3-2. Change it up again. If they’ve studied the tapes of our recent league formations they won’t be able to prepare for it. They’d have to go back to the Madrid game to prepare, most likely.

            —Aurier—Sanchez—Toby—Verts—-Davies

              • David Dillenberg February 11, 2018 at 12:24 pm

                Moura for Son
                No Dier?

                • Accy February 11, 2018 at 12:28 pm

It’d be ballsy but maybe Poch will start Moura.

We will be set up for the counter – so why not?

                  • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 12:42 pm

Accy everything is possible but his position seems to be related to Eriksen more. A Eriksen is too valuable to not play. He can take maybe Dembeles position but that would leave us short on strength and ball retention. He can play on the wing but Lamela will get the gig I think for his defence as much as offence. The likeliest situation is if Eriksen is not effective he will come on for Eriksen sometime around the 60 or 70 min mark

              • Accy February 11, 2018 at 12:25 pm

But not so good on the counter.

You need Son for the counter

                • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 12:28 pm

It will be taken up by Davies I think who can get forward more
We are playing Tuesday and Son really knocked himself out yesterday I think

DD Moura on the bench,if that

                • Ronwol1960-61 February 11, 2018 at 12:36 pm

Accy, also Son was a bit off in the last one, even the one before and he also is getting a bit of a selfish streak because he knows he can score great goals but when he overdoes it all goes wrong. I give him 100% for trying but when his timing is off its really bad. I think he will play in the return

        • gloster1861 February 11, 2018 at 12:07 pm

  • çaveman February 11, 2018 at 11:56 am

Dembele was a beast yesterday but also a beast was Vertongen. He bosses the defence and the amount of clearances he made were amazing. He, Dembele, Davies, Trippier and Kane were at their brilliant best.

      • OrganicPaper February 11, 2018 at 11:51 am

Really good actually. I needed my specs but can bit complain about the view. Best atmosphere I’ve experienced at the new Wembley too. (Not difficult when I’ve mostly seen England games!)

Although my heart wanted Toby back yesterday for the winning mentality he brings my head agreed that it is better to ease him back so he is here for the rest of the season and for the CL campaign. He had his first 90 mins just a few days before the NLD and think it was a good idea to hold him back and maybe have him available for Tuesday where his experience could be invaluable
