Tottenham Hotspur’s best kept striking secret Vincent Janssen has been given a double whammy morale boost this month.

First he was told by the club that they wanted him to stay, then he was informed that a bid of €25million had been dismissed out of hand.

Gladys understands that the club enquiring with menaces were the freshly minted Olympique de Marseille. Quite what attracted them to the ‘not quite getting into gear yet’ Dutchman is anyone’s guess. Mine is that French football is far less frenetic than the English variety.

Vinny joins any number of Spurs players in having what was an unmemorable off-season. There were some comments about him looking a tad tubby doing the rounds but this may have just been a mild outbreak of nitpickingitus.

I generally agree with most of what Levy does. But I don’t get this 11th hour brinkmanship thing. Doesn’t seem to work: For every one you may get a better deal on (Vdv but that was a while back) trhere is a Sissoko. You’d think we will now pay 2-3m euros more for a RB because people know we’re short.

  • Matt August 8, 2017 at 12:24 pm

I thought he had a reasonable pre season, as far as they go. Link play looked nice and his goal was actually a really sharp one I thought. He needs a few more minutes this year, turning down a profit was the right answer.

  • Ray August 8, 2017 at 9:20 am

This might sound a bit far fetched regarding Janssen, Sissoko and Nokando but I remember a certain Gareth Bale, you know, the one with the ponytail everyone’s lauding and want in their team. In his first three years at Spurs, Bale was considered a useless limp wristed wanker by all and sundry, Redcrap wanted to flog him to Birmingham. The rest is history. I don’t for a moment suggest these three will reach Bales level but they could come good in their second season with us. However, it’s obvious that we need a couple more quality players added to the squad and the little bald bastard is playing silly buggers again WTF.

Really interesting blog comparing our Wing back targets’ metrics against each other. Shows how Tripps, Walker and Davies compare with Toljan, Henrichs, Pereira, Cancelo and Aurier.

Definitely worth another year, but has to be given more games. There were glimpses of nice little touches, but he was clearly trying too hard to make a goal in the final third of the season, but I suspect some of that was down to Poch trying the approach of publicly calling him out on his effort levels.

In the end, I suspect that his lack of pace will do for him as that seems to be the thing that so many strikers rely on in the PL. Kane gets away with not having that because he has so many other cards to play.

Was reading the comments from the Trabzonspor coach this morning about Levy making negotiations really difficult. Suspect Levy is pushing for a sale as he wants shot, but as always, Levy will try and make on the deal. It’s like trying to sell a Ferrari on how fast you know it can go when you bought it without and engine in the first place.

So I’m guessing we may well be seeing a big French lump on the pitch at Wemberly in the coming weeks.

I’m hoping the Trippier injury is not serious but at the same time I do hope it’s a wake-up call of sorts for Levy. You know when the camera pans to him when Spurs are losing, or when one of his signings has just missed a sitter, and he has a face like he’s sucking on a lemon? I hope we see that face on Sunday if Sissoko or N’Koudou has to play wing-back.

    • JuandeInternational August 8, 2017 at 8:40 am

If Trippier doesn’t make it, we have a ready made right back who is worth between £20-40m ready to step in. He’s also called Kyle so it will be like nothing has changed. Carry on everyone.

How is levy not buying players selling the fans short?,,most of these melts couldnt find WHL ON A MAP,is levy affecting your free streaming? Utter spazmos calling one of the worlds top chairmen names because he won’t sign some player they’ve never even seen or can’t pronounce? Lolz🙄

    • Ronan August 8, 2017 at 5:36 am

      1. For two years running, Spurs have fallen just short of winning the title for the first time in colour. They didn’t win it. Hence they need to give the coach more quality options, as the coach himself has publicly stated.
      2. Poch specifically asked for these new signings to be brought in early, so they could adapt to his demands and be ready to hit the ground running when the season kicks off.
      3. We’re four players short of what we had this time last season, when we made a slow start. Five short, if Tripper’s injury is serious.
      4. “one of the world’s top chairmen”™ sold our other RB, the league’s highest-rated one, to the title favourites, when they had no RBs, and has still to buy a replacement.
      5. Most Spurs fans would rather everything possible was done to help the club win the league now it’s finally got a real chance than spend another decade boasting about levy’s accountancy achievements.

I was there & rubbing my eyes….. Spurs down 2-0 to Roma & it’s late in the 2nd 1/2. Harry Kane shanks an open goal so Poch takes him off & on comes Janssen & he scores a tap in. Unbelievable! It has to be said that N’Koudou deliver a peach of a cross that lead to Vinny’s goal.

I agree with that and it was two weeks ago and the fitness levels have greatly improved since then. We are all hoping that the three of them (Janssen, N’Koudou and Sissoko) have turned the corner and will become useful members of the squad immediately.

The problem with Vinny as far as the PL is concerned is although he is in and around the six yard box when the ball comes in he is generally in the wrong position. I have watched it many times and the amount of times he is within 2 to 3 yards of putting the ball in the back of the net is frustrating. Either the chance goes begging or someone else finishes it. He generally makes his run to the near post thus leaving little or no angle to squeeze the ball in when Son, Dele, Kane are making the correct runs and positioning.
I feel he needs to be a little more central to the onion bag or even at the far post much more often. Anyway that was only 2 cents worth, I have a few more coins left.

This is the reality of the club under Levy/ENIC, we have a manager dragging us to new heights and owners that don’t want to join in.
They’d rather we were sitting in 7th-5th place while they spin the idea that we’ll be a regular C.L side once the stadium is done.
They clearly did not expect all this 2nd place stuff and they aren’t comfortable with it in my opinion, wasn’t in the business plan at all…

We’re sixth highest income & 6th highest wages. I think Levy won’t move on this, I don’t think he’s uncomfortable with us finishing second at all. I do think he’s a turd tho for not bringing anyone in yet. I still say we’ll sign three!

    • AccringtonSpurs August 7, 2017 at 11:42 pm

As somebody else said… it could all hinge on Barca buying Coutinho. Liverpool, then awash with cash buy Van Dijk from Saints for £70m, who ‘splurge’ £20m on Wimmer – which ups our funds and affects our gettable targets.

      Then again…

There’s no justification for not bringing in players, unless Poch has named Meyer & Barkley as his priorities. Levy is right tho in one respect, the market is bonkers & can’t continue its current trajectory.

      • Harry Hotspur August 7, 2017 at 9:13 pm

I don’t understand what Levy’s thoughts on the market have to do with anything?

Parity was achieved when he accepted the Bonzo money.

Sorry McG but at that very moment Levy surrendered his ‘pity me’ card.

        • McG ⚽⚽ August 7, 2017 at 11:20 pm

No pity from me, I’ve stuck up for him many times but this is a joke, we come second then this. I can understand him waiting on Barkley but not a new RB. I do agree however that player prices are ridiculous, not excusing him, just happen to agree on that point.

          • Harry Hotspur August 7, 2017 at 11:33 pm

Levy has no purchase (no pun intended) in the world of fiscal observations. Had he told Manchester City to ‘just give us £25m for Bonzo’ then he’d be allowed to wax about the lunacy. As it is, he’s part of the problem.

He has parity. He’s no conceivable issues with prices, none whatsoever.

            • McG ⚽⚽ August 7, 2017 at 11:42 pm

It’s a difficult one tho, the money was so ridiculous you couldn’t turn it down, that would make you stupid. I just hope he’s clever in the use of that money. Ramires for 5 mil, it can be done so we’ll have to see where we are when the window shuts, Poch needs to be clever too in the players he requests.

      • jfdit August 7, 2017 at 9:28 pm

we don’t mind selling players for top dough, free markets find their own level, toppy prices have been the norm ever since the TV money went up with sky & BT sport, at the top level you either compete or accept the fact you’re probably one of the also rans
