As per this recent blog Swansea City wanted £45million for Siggy, but Daniel Levy wanted our sell on fee deducted as a discount. We would only go to £35million.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman announced at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon that 27-year-old Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson has passed his medical.

“I have seen the doctor and there is no problem,” said Koeman. “Still he needs to sign, but I saw him in the Blue!”

Sigurdsson’s proposed switch has dragged on for most of the summer with Swansea initially valuing their star man at £50million.

But Everton are finally set to secure their number one target to take their summer spending to over £140million.

“We worked a long time to get this deal in, he was one of the key players to bring in,” added Koeman. “We need players who will bring productivity to the team.”

For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Why in the world would we pay 45mill for Gylfo….it’s outrageous. For that money he an immediate starter….of course he isnt. should we pay 45 mill for all our bench warming squad? Come on honestly…this makes absolutely no sense…even in the “i hate Levy world

  • East Stand August 16, 2017 at 10:31 pm

Can somebody explain what has happened to transfer fees this summer? They’ve blummin’ gone mental, there must be some much TV money sloshing about because what other reason is there for it? Players haven’t suddenly got better…

  • San Diego Spurs August 16, 2017 at 10:17 pm

I’m ambivalent on GS. I thought he never got quite the proper run at spurs, jammed as the queue was with Holtby and Eriksen. Posh clearly seemed to want him. But…his stats are largely based on set pieces, and is he willing to play as a backup #10? I think he’s a fantastic player, but the player I see us missing is someone more like Mane. The first goal against N’castle was clearly the result of an exercise (the teach the drill at the “B” level coaching course in the states) where you have the forward drop in and the #10 run past. I see Eriksen/Son/Kane/Alli as able to pick apart packed defenses, but we need something else for a big pitch.

    Our team is slow.

anyway, the truth will out this weekend.

The cynic would say that we were only “in” for Siggy to push the price up, and make it more likely that Everton would want to recoup some of it back by selling Barkley. If they bought Siggy for £20m, their net spend would only be about £27m so they could keep both. Now it’s over £50m, they’ll want to get it back down again. Sell Barkley to us for £30 and their Net spend is stomachable, and ours is a happy £20m in the black (DL’s favourite colour – like the rest of us, he hates red…)

I wouldn’t be surprised if all this talk of Chelsea circling all our targets hasnt originated from us. Plays quite well in the media if our three targets all appear to have turned down champions and professional scumbags to join “the project”…

    • East Stand August 16, 2017 at 10:36 pm

These players might be Chavs targets but the media are making it look like we want them so when they sign for them it looks like we’ve lost out.

The U.K. media is full of Chav fans…

  • Syd 😎 August 16, 2017 at 9:24 pm

Is there any evidence to suggest that he wanted to come back to Spurs. I would not if I was him.

  • Digiyid August 16, 2017 at 8:36 pm

Overrated at his player should worth that money..its obscene.

    • East Stand August 16, 2017 at 10:42 pm

He’s a good player with a great attitude, however I’m not sure he would have wanted to come back with the competition for that 10 role at Spurs.

He was shoved out wide to make room for Clint freaking Dempsey and then Eriksen while having Paula, Holtby who could play there as well.

He was treated like a spare part. His time was once with us, end of.

on the other hand after the Iceland-England game (at Euro 2016), no English player is worth whatever…! coys

  • Andreas August 16, 2017 at 8:34 pm

If another club signed sanchez from ajax, sessagnon from fulham, Ross barclay, I would be pissed off. Everton signing sigurdssen doesn’t bother me at all.
We need young quick players, sadio Mane at pool was the one who would have made us stronger , and would have been cheaper than sissoko and janssen

  • mattspurs August 16, 2017 at 8:25 pm

Who would sign £40m players for their bench?

oh sorry, forgot about Man U and City

    • Real Fan? ⚽️ August 16, 2017 at 8:28 pm

Never heard of him. Where did they get him from?

      • gavlav August 16, 2017 at 9:21 pm

        He was on Dilly’s list

  • mattspurs August 16, 2017 at 8:03 pm

    So was our bid £35m minus £3.5 = £31.5m

or £35m after the 10% discount so a £38.5m bid?

  • YidInExile August 16, 2017 at 7:48 pm

Agree with Simon, don’t rate him at all, would be useless for us

  • Andreas August 16, 2017 at 7:05 pm

We need players with pace. Don’t buy anyone that is not very quick. We probably won’t buy any of poch’s first choice players ,just have to make do with the what levy scrapes up after the top clubs have finished. How long does it take to sign players for fuck sake. Does levy do his business sending letters as opposed to phones and emails?
    I’ve had enough of waiting.

  • SimonSpur August 16, 2017 at 6:55 pm

Well done Levy I say. He’s not worth £20M and we’re getting £10M from the sale to Everton. Good business I say.

    • Harry Hotspur August 16, 2017 at 7:05 pm

Good business that leaves us staring at stupidly weak squad, Donna.

  • SpursGoliath August 16, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Another really average signing by Everton, it’s like the Bale money again only they didn’t get an Eriksen.

Bullet dodged imo, Sig was too weak/slow the first time. Nothing has changed.

    • East Stand August 16, 2017 at 10:43 pm

He’d have been handy but only as a rotation option, he left the club in the first place to avoid that…

  • Andrew August 16, 2017 at 6:41 pm

Hang on, why isn’t Levy within his rights to get our sell-on fee back? Why should the sell-on be cancelled just because he’s being sold back to the same club that initially sold him.

Without the sell-on fee, Sigurdsson would have been £55 million to us: presumably we get £10 million as the sell-on fee from the Everton signing? So we’d miss out on that £10m and have to pay another £45m to buy him.

Barkley is younger and just as good and will be cheaper due to his contract saga. Hopefully we’ll get him, this Ajax CB and Sessegnon and be done with it all.

    • UnkleTaff August 16, 2017 at 6:52 pm

Completely within his rights. To not insist on a reduction of the fee would have been an act of gross negligence.

And he ain’t worth £45m anyway. Not even close.

  • mikespurs August 16, 2017 at 6:36 pm

Siggy would have been a great addition to the team. Oh wait, we have shitsko. Nevermind, move along

    • Lilywhite without the II August 16, 2017 at 6:40 pm

Our only replacement for Eriksen is Onomah, but he was too good and went to Villa..

  • Ray August 16, 2017 at 6:30 pm

    Thank fuck for that.

  • RumpleSPURTSkin 💋 August 16, 2017 at 6:28 pm

    Bullet dodged.

  • coys1882 August 16, 2017 at 6:23 pm

Very nice Shakespearean quote H, but even in today’s insane market, how is Gylfi worth 45 million quid, especially to us? Who would he replace in our midfield? I always felt, whilst he was here, that Gylfi was intimidated by his transfer fee and the burden of expectation in playing for a larger club. How much more now that he has gone for 45 million, by far Everton’s record ever transfer fee?

I don’t think it is money well spent by Everton, especially as they already have an outstanding dead ball specialist in Leighton Baines, the one area where Gylfi truly excels. There are some players who never come to terms with moving from being a ‘big fish in a small pond’, to playing for a larger club, especially where a large transfer fee is involved. In our recent history, Darren Bent was one and David Bentley another. I suspect that Gylfi may well fall into that same category.

  • Lilywhite without the II August 16, 2017 at 6:19 pm

Does anyone think Ibrahimovic has another year left in him…we wanted him before he went to united? no…no…?

    • Aussie in Switzerland August 16, 2017 at 7:45 pm

      Fuck no

  • Lilywhite without the II August 16, 2017 at 6:17 pm

I love Siggy, and Siggy loved me, Levy selling him was always about the easy choice to make a return rather than getting ride of the dross that was worthless we had at the time…no way this was Poch

    • Lilywhite without the II August 16, 2017 at 6:20 pm

  • Devonshirespur August 16, 2017 at 6:17 pm

so technically we only missed out by £5.5m because after paying our cut, Swansea will have received £40.5m, so an offer of £40.5m will have matched Evertons offer in net terms.

That said, I rate Siggy, but not at £40.5m. People in this crazy era seem to forget what an astronomical amount of money that actually is. For a player who is 27 year old (28 in a couple weeks) , minimal sell on, high end of our wage budget and more or less a squad player…nah, doesnt really stack up.

  • TomSpur August 16, 2017 at 6:17 pm

Deducting the sell-on is perfectly sensible and means the price-tag would have been effectively £40.5m. So if we were only prepared to go to £35m, that is a difference of only £5.5m, not £10m! What is Levy playing at?! To be honest I think we need pacey attackers to add variation to the squad but Sigurdsson would have been great cover for either Alli/Eriksen and good to start when resting either of them given all the European/cup games.

  • Dan B August 16, 2017 at 6:16 pm

PL experience, double figures for goals and assists, peak of his career…that’s why Ron goes to Iceland.

Meanwhile Levy is haggling in Poundland.

    • Harry Hotspur August 16, 2017 at 6:22 pm

Yeah, only a complete mug would buy Siggy. He’s the shittiest player we could possibly waste money on. Goals and assists are what losers get excited by.

We do things the Spurs way and I for one am proud of our resilience in refusing to sully our great name by chasing vulgarities such as trophies ball blah fakin blah…

    • mattspurs August 16, 2017 at 8:18 pm

He’s scored 9,11,and 7 the last 3 seasons in the PL – so not double figures, can’t see Harry relinquishing penalty duties any time soon so that translates to 6,8 and 7.

  • TopOfThePochs August 16, 2017 at 6:11 pm

Said it at the time – poor decision to ever sell Siggy.

  • Lilywhite without the II August 16, 2017 at 6:11 pm

So, another 4.5m in the duffle’o’bag, Christmas is looking good at the Levy household…hope we all get an invite..

  • molespurs August 16, 2017 at 5:59 pm

This discussion was avoidable siggys transfer was a brain fart on levys behalf was one of the only players who came to us with great ability technique and an eye for goal.

  • King Paul August 16, 2017 at 5:53 pm

Why the fuck would we want to pay £35m a player we gave away 3 years ago? He literally wouldn’t make our bench. He has no stains whatsoever, Poch wouldn’t pick him in a million years

    • King Paul August 16, 2017 at 5:54 pm

      • mattspurs August 16, 2017 at 8:24 pm

Fully fit squad – Siggy makes the second row of the bench

Hugo, Tripps, Toby, Jan, Davies, Dier, Wanyama, Moose, Alli, Son, Harry

Vorm, Rose, Sonny, Winks, Janssen, Wimmer, Lamela

Siggy replacing one of the above? Ahead of the below…

        Sissoko, Nkoudou, Haircuts

  • Totspurs August 16, 2017 at 5:52 pm

    • TomSpur August 16, 2017 at 6:20 pm

But Eriksen will no doubt head for pastures new next season unless we win something this season AND pay him a lot more. The latter may be feasible with increased stadium revenues but a lot depends on the former.
