It could be that Daniel Levy will get his way – again.

As per Jermaine Jenas’ recent comment about players hitting the money menopause at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Toby Aldereireld is too old and too expensive to stay at Spurs.

The value of the bid is currently undefined, but Gladys believes it to be close to the erstwhile rumoured figure of £75million.

I am unsurprised and yet at the same same time bewildered as to why we would be so keen to rid ourselves of player that is appreciated as an asset elsewhere.

This blog reported quite recently that Toby Alderweireld had demanded that Spurs boss Daniel Levy makes a decision over his contract demands before this summer’s World Cup.

The 29 year old has been selected for Belgian’s provisional squad which curiously enough is in the same group as England, the side that could feature up to five Tottenham team-mates when the two meet on June 28.

Two months ago a fan called Arif bumped into the heavily discussed Belgian Boy whilst posing for a photograph asked him if he was staying.

Arif: Toby you’re staying right?

Toby: I don’t know man, I don’t know.

This blogger will be fascinated to see what now unfolds…

Neither are you paying close attention. So Walker was the best in the league, and yet prior to Toby arriving our defence, with Walker, was pance?
I don’t think Walker has added anything to Citeh.

You’re entitled to your opinion, Glos. But as a counterpoint, his fellow pros voted him the best RB in the PL in both 15/16 and 16/17, and did so again at the end of the season just gone. The coach who took him off our hands has worked with the very best wingbacks in world football, Alves and Lahm. He knew exactly what he needed in that position and it was not Aurier, Trippier or any other premier league RB. Similarly now, Mourinho wants only Toby.

Liking the use of the word “erstwhile” in this post Harry. You don’t get a lot of erstwhile these days.

Agree totally on the Tobester. If we can double (or more) Harry’s wages, you’d have thought we could have reached agreement with Toby. The general reporting seems to be that Poch wants him (and Rose) sold quickly.

Perhaps with the emergence of Sanchez, Poch feels the money to reinvest is more useful than the player. Personally, I’d have kept the player if at all possible.

  • Camus June 11, 2018 at 9:00 am

Sky’s Spurs mouth-piece Lyall Thomas with the scoop a couple of days ago:-
    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/11399707/tottenham-considering-move-for-aston-villas-jack-grealish

Key line – “The midfielder was not among Spurs’ original list of transfer targets but has emerged as a potential signing due to Villa’s financial difficulties.”

    • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 9:23 am

Perhaps Grealish could be good enough under Pochettino to provide rotational/cover for Eriksen? Currently he and Kane have no back ups.

If Villa weren’t in financial poo maybe they would refuse to sell him, which is why he is now on our radar?

I don’t know, I’ve never seen him play but others say he’s got the talent.

      • Camus June 11, 2018 at 10:08 am

I’m open to us signing him, don’t get me wrong – he looks to have something that Poch could harness – but I’d find it entirely dishonest if we are only chasing him due to Villa’s predicament as Lyall suggests, as opposed to him being on Poch’s wanted list from day one.

        • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 11:23 am

Levy heard the sounds of distress coming from Villa. Like a shark sensing blood in the water. Possibly we had watched Onomah and clocked an improved Grealish, but who knows?

      • Harry Hotspur June 11, 2018 at 11:23 am

He’s talented but only applies that talent for about 8% of the time he’s on the pitch.

        • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 11:27 am

          The only way is up.

We must add in Levynomics. If he scoops the lad for chicken feed he’ll sell on this item of stock for a profit, however indifferently he plays. This is principally an act of asset stripping.

  • Sir June 11, 2018 at 8:50 am

I have never seen anything like this before. Just muppets arguing and complaining about this and that.

Have you ever seen a Spurs side this dominant and consistent?

Since 2007, Spurs have been fifth or higher apart from one season finishing at sixth position. They have continously been bying good/great players and at times lesser players (like everyone else).

Since 2011, Spurs have made sure that top four have become top five, been in CL on ”the reg”. Have players that ”top clubs” wants, ie Real, Barca, Bayern, City, Utd etc.

But here we go.. keep on banging on with your complaints. SMDFH

    Still….

    Out:
    Sissoko
    Llorente
    Janssen
    Toby

    In:
    De Ligt
    Sessegnon
    Rabiot/Weigl
    Bale
    Martial (swap Toby).

PS: in regards to the assets etc.. Toby is 29 with shorter history with injuries and De Ligt at 18 would be a great way of upgrading the Clubs assets.

Davinson Sanchez and De Ligt would enable MoPo to install his future defendsline (both did great the season before the last one – with playing Europa League final). Furthermore, add these two with Sessegnon och Kyle Walker-Peters and one could OVERstand what MoPo is doing.

Just f***tards that can’t see it!!

Thanks for patronising everyone, only problem is, you transfer plan is shit.

      Bale ISN’T taking a 10mill pay-cut.
De Ligt is 18 with one full season under his belt in a lesser league.
      Sessegnon isn’t much better.
      Martial is shit.

And your history lesson was also boring.

    • Tappaspur June 11, 2018 at 9:20 am

If you think this is arguing and complaining it would lead me to believe you’ve possibly lived a sheltered life. Just bouncing around a bit a Tottenham mate.

    • Ronan June 11, 2018 at 10:27 am

You’re not paying close enough attention, sir. Toby came in and transformed a defence that was the league’s 3rd worst into its best, providing the basis for two unlikely title challenges. That’s what levy would be giving Man U, a year after he let Guardiola have the league’s best RB. Supplying your rivals with proven top quality to take a punt on overseas rookies is not a recognized means of winning titles.

      • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 11:25 am

Walker was one of city’s best players this year! We sorely missed him

  • AdzSpur June 11, 2018 at 8:01 am

As much as the media makes out this is all about money, there is more to this, maybe a fall out with Poch? If he doesn’t want to be there , let him go, we don’t need another Berbatov situation unsettling players. 75m for a player who may only have 2 more decent years in him is decent business. And let’s be honest, he’s a good player but he’s not Ronaldo. Hopefully the team is Madrid and he’s part of a deal for Bale.;)

    • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 8:37 am

An ex-Atletico player going back to their intense rivals. Good luck to him!

  • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 7:11 am

Wasn’t there some question that MoPo told Daniel that Toby was going to accept a new contract back in January? I believe there was a blog to that effect, but then Toby changed his mind and didn’t sign. This led to the situation where MoPo was made to look stupid and he was furious.

Of course we don’t know for sure, but there is baggage here of some description.

    • Camus June 11, 2018 at 7:55 am

Yes, pretty much – from what I heard too. He’s definitely gone, it’s just a question of when, to whom and for how much.

    • Gloster1861 June 11, 2018 at 7:14 am

Now that major money is going into new contracts it is highly doubtful therefore any war chest other than recycling Toby and Dembele.

So, wait, if we sell Toby for £70m, and buy de Ligt for £70m… that equals ZERO net spend!
    Woah.
DL should do this more often.

ZERO net spend (apart from wages) equals Alderweireld OUT, Martial and Rashford IN. Juan Foyth promoted to third CB.

  • Finn June 11, 2018 at 4:01 am

I read one of the most plausible pieces of analysis in an article a few months back which posited that the broad sequence of events was 1.Poch – 2.Kane – 3. secure the club’s other top players (Eriksen, Alli, Vertongen, Son & Toby) – 4. massage the squad (improve and extend at one end and get rid at the other) – 5. get in 3-4 decent level additions.

So, following this line of thought, Poch is done and had to be done first as he’s integral to sealing deals with the players. Kane is now done, which has re-set the upper limit of the wage structure. The other players are now being courted to extend contracts with new deals commensurate to their contribution and value, as is now defined in a new/reviewed wage structure (ie, in relation to HK).

“I am unsurprised and yet at the same time bewildered as to why we would be so keen to rid ourselves of player that is appreciated as an asset elsewhere.”

I agree, but ARE we keen?

So far the original article has proved out, we are NOW, following HK setting the benchmark, at the stage when new contracts are being discussed with our other top players. Lets assume for a moment this timetable has been in place for some time, then Toby, as well as Eriksen, Alli, Son, Verts, etc. will NOW be talking with the club; as per expectations.

It seems evident that THFC contracts must contain a pretty tightly worded non-disclosure clause; this strongly suggests that most of the “ITK” originates from elsewhere.

We know who and what club, is historically high on the wants-to-fuck-us-over list. We also know they have most of the gossip spinning red-tops in their corner and that their manager likes to feed these hyenas to further his own agenda. We also know that the bald one has taken personal umbrage with ManU and by and large has taken a stance (Bonzo notwithstanding) of not wanting to strengthen our opponents.

IF a bumper/better offer has been made for Toby, what has prompted that? The possibility that the player may do a deal to stay? I will concede wishful thinking, but it’s no less likely a reading of the tea leaves than any other.

£70 million for 29 year old defender (not a 20 a season attacker) is silly money, regardless of how good he has been, particularly if he hasn’t contributed much this season just gone. As Fergie once said, always make sure your best players legal go on someone else’s pitch.

It’s a question of getting an upgrade. The definition of upgrade would also be valid to include extra years in the tank, in addition to talent and potential and character. Let’s not fool ourselves, if de Ligt ticks the boxes we will have to accept he is going to grow into the shoes of Toby, but he looks pretty damn good already.

  • Paddio June 10, 2018 at 10:10 pm

The player portfolio is based on asset value and at present Toby is at his peak.
Not sure if the 75 mill was a speculative figure to see if someone would pay it.
But it seems Something has gone on internally between the player and manager which means, sell him as he is not viewed as being ‘on the bus’ and/or the fitness stats are starting to flag up against Toby which then means in Pochs mind it’s time to let him go.
It’s an issue as I don’t see the player we would bring in that will give us what Toby brings as one of our main centre backs for next season.

      • q June 10, 2018 at 7:37 pm

        1. If the manager has decided that Tobys’ attitude is not conducive
to the squad harmony he strives for, but the wage increase offered is
reasonable, do you back the manager in getting rid ??

        2. If 1 is the state of affairs, and the only buyer is a PL rival, should the
chairman back his manager (while rinsing the buyer) , or should he demand
that both manager and player sort it or their next season will be hell ??
