Once we look beyond Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela sliding through League One Gillingham like hot knives through butter, one area of note was Vinny Janssen’s aching inability to score in open play.

His penalty was taken with authority.

But after a full 75 minutes, what we were left with was a pretty convincing impression of Roberto Soldado.

EXCUSE #1 He will come good.

Time is every recalcitrant Spurs fan’s old faithful. God forbid we’d actually buy someone who was ready to go. Of course we mustn’t. We wouldn’t want to do a Leeds.

EXCUSE #2 It was only (insert opposition/competition).

Last night’s game was not to be confused with a blood, mud and guts cup game. Gillingham were most lady like and quite obliging in their manner.

Sam Long in the Standard:

As Spurs dominated, the chances continued to flow but Janssen’s efforts were more clumsy than clinical.

Promising moments of link up play were cancelled out by an apparent nervousness in front of goal.

Perhaps unfairly, considering his age, Janssen is already expected to be the finished article due to the unwavering demands of Premier League fans.

He’s got all the ingredients to become just that – with bustling displays which defy his Dutch roots – but may leave Spurs short of clout up top in high-profile fixtures.

Obviously nobody in their right mind wants Vinny to flop, but only an ostrich would ignore the fact that last night – against mediocre opposition – really struggled.
