Tottenham Hotspur

Sensational Spurs

Sensational Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur is an unfathomable conundrum. Anyone who tells you ‘I told you so’ was guessing. I take that back, in fact they were purposefully lying to you.

The wisdom deployed in predicting what Spurs might do is on a par with the toothless crones who are able to foretell the sex of an unborn baby by holding a conker on a shoelace over the bump. ‘Charlatan’ barely covers it.

The first half was as close to as dumb as dumb could possibly be watching a drunk trying to assemble an Ikea kitchen. Lots of possession, lots of own goals and no discernible progress. A purgatory of uselessness. At half time you’d have bet your house, your wife and the dog on the drunk being found slumped on the floor next to lots of cardboard, torn up instructions and a half eaten Chinese take-away scattered around the snoring corpse.

But that didn’t happen.

The 88th minute were 1-0 down and looking like nobody had even flicked through the Big Boy’s Bumper Book Of How To Finish Your Dinner on the coach over.

Tom Carroll, Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson, Wayne Routeledge and Kyle Naughton all look as if they had moved onto better things when they moved East.

Did we learn anything last night?

We learned that somewhere in that Tottenham squad, underneath all the flakeyness there beats the bruised but not beaten heart of a championship winning side.

Great sides find the magic, the true grit, the – call it what you want – and manage to pull the iron out of the fire. Great sides go to Swansea on a Wednesday night without their superstar striker, concede a goal and and after fumbling, failing to pick the locks, find what’s been missing before the final whistle blows.

I was so impressed by what I saw in the last 5 minutes because it reminded of me why I got into this in the first place.

And as someone else posted earlier it’s nice to have a positive post from you harry. I remember you slagging St Poch off something chronic a while back. It’s now the proudest time to be a spurs fan in 30 years. Even being in the fa cup semi final is a side note.

    • gloster1861 April 6, 2017 at 7:58 pm

A side note? I’m so wanting us to win the cup, we were the FA Cup kings until the PL kicked in. Coincidence, or was it the by-product of the money game that the Premier fostered, that meant the usual suspects then won it four times out of five?

    • Harry Hotspur April 6, 2017 at 8:24 pm

Look you ape. If you’re that bored, write into the Met office and complain that last week they said it was going to rain, and today it was quite sunny.

When it’s crap, I’l tell you. When it’s great I’ll tell you.

Anyone else getting faked off with the sissoko witch hunt? Yeh he’s over priced and can’t trap or make the right pass atm but giving him dogs abuse all the time ain’t gonna help us or him. Probably a sensitive flower who needs love. I’ve seen a few times when he’s running through the middle and looks unstoppable he was voted Frances player of the tournament at the euros ffs. And whatever happens we’re gonna need him in this title run-in. COYFS

    • Ronwol196061🇨🇦 April 6, 2017 at 7:01 pm

I also think he is used to a slower game and that his true position is more where Dembele is although Dembele is really good there.
I think Sissoko would be better at Palace and Zaha would be better for us

      • Ginaza April 6, 2017 at 7:09 pm

Agreed. Tbf it was a strange signing all round tho, maybe swung it when he destroyed us up at St James Park last season? But bringing him off the bench and playing him on the right wing was bizarre almost setting him up for a fall. He’ll now doubt get the winner at Hull to win us the league now.

        • Ronwol196061🇨🇦 April 6, 2017 at 9:57 pm

Could happen or not,I can let you know after it happens…im fucked for foresight

    • Harry Hotspur April 6, 2017 at 8:22 pm

Going to need him to do what? You’re describing Sissoko as if he doesn’t have incredibly poor form in this league with Newcastle. It’s not a witch hunt.

He’s a fat time-waster and on that basis it’s far from uncalled for to refer to him as one.

      • Ginaza April 6, 2017 at 9:40 pm

Yeh and jansen has stunk the place out all season but we’ve still sung his name and shown him love. Then he sets up the winner last night. I’m just saying let’s get behind everyone of those spurs players and start the recriminations in June.

  • David Dillenberg April 6, 2017 at 3:42 pm

Not that I am unduly concerned but beware Arse going on a typically end of season winning run.
I recall once we were 10 points ahead and they clawed it back. Not this time.
Compared to Chelski, who are at home to seemingly already doomed Sunderland on last game of campaign, our run in on paper is challenging!

    • gloster1861 April 6, 2017 at 3:45 pm

Arsenal at the Lane will settle it. Beat them in the last NLD at the old place always looked like it could finish them off.

Good luck to them staying up, and Hull. West Ham look dicey and I look forward to us stuffing them at their open air detention centre and helping them down to a more fitting league.

    • UnkleTaff April 6, 2017 at 2:46 pm

There’s often a side that drops like a stone to become embroiled in a relegation battle right at the death.

on a more serious and troubling note Pocho needs to address our inability to keep things up fof 90 odd mins,. Nuff said. Viva Spurs. long may thd winning streak continue.

Pochs got it right all except a main ingredient.
Without moving the ball down quicker with are left with short passes going sideways into blocked defences.
Yes we won but it hinged on the first goal and then the flood.
Its not like it hasnt happened before.
Maybe we dont have that player.Modric has actually become that player since he left.
Dembelevis one if ourvnest most reluable players but we need in his position or in the player bsck of hims position a player who can hit that 20 yd pass accuratly forward and players who can control.
There is too muchtime we are taling to get up thebfield and its closed
Without Kane and sometimes with Kane we need to be more aggressive in the final third.

That said it was a good three points.

About Sissoko. He is more a Palace player than a Tottenham player.I think his role is wrong for him at Tottenham. Lets try Zaha.
Sissoko played one of his better games for us but we need more fluidity from the position.

    • Superspoz 🏆 April 6, 2017 at 2:20 pm

Don’t know don’t care. I was entertained. It was like a good film. Lots of nail biting, twist and turns and an explosive finale.

    • SpurAndy 🍒π April 6, 2017 at 2:32 pm

I think we break well from defence and I think we can pick a pass when needed to open them up if it’s an even attacking game. What we don’t do well (most teams are the same tbh) is dealing with a team that just sits there with a packed defense. Only the very best teams, Barca, RM, Bayern can open these up. That’s what we need to concentrate on and find a solution too imo.

      • Poxy April 6, 2017 at 2:57 pm

Not having a personal go at you, Andy, but you’re the second person in a matter of minutes, on two different blogs, spelling defence with an s – we’re in England not the US!

  • Spursy April 6, 2017 at 1:41 pm

What an absolutely stonking match! So much to love about those final minutes. The lads were predators. Alli has the killer instinct, so does Son, Janssen and Eriksen.

Poch, you have done something to these players. You love the badge. Love you, man!

  • Horndog April 6, 2017 at 1:28 pm

The squad, from Poch thru all of the players (even Sissoko) must have belief. This is the maturity of all of them from last seasons trip in. We may not catch Chelsea but we are showing we won’t give up. Good vibrations.

    • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 1:37 pm

Sorry HD, I think the players only rediscovered their belief once Sissoso left the pitch.

      • Horndog April 6, 2017 at 1:47 pm

You are probably right. I was just referring to the aspect that Poch has instilled a sense of belief.

        • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 2:04 pm

Ignore me HD, I was just being an anti Sissoko’ist.

  • DAVID April 6, 2017 at 1:18 pm

Looking at our remaining fixtures, vital we win the next 2 as tricky away fixtures to come at Hull, Leicester and West Ham.

    • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 1:19 pm

      And Palace.

      • DAVID April 6, 2017 at 1:21 pm

All of a sudden every fixture is looking tricky, so close yet so far away.

        • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 1:24 pm

Yep, I was more concerned last night about the pack catching us, rather than the racist result, it’s definitely squeaky bum time.

          • DAVID April 6, 2017 at 1:27 pm

Catching Chelsea would be a bonus, I’m looking over my shoulder too, should beat Watford and Bournemouth but just our luck to play Hull and Leicester when they are going so well and it’s always the spammers cup final.

            • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 1:35 pm

Hull should (hopefully) be on the beach by the time we play them, Leicester tho, will want to show they are still as good as last season, and Palace will be a test now. We do however, have a nice points buffer now.

    • UnkleTaff April 6, 2017 at 2:11 pm

If Chelsea don’t drop any points in their next two games I fear our remaining fixtures will become academic as far as the race, such as it is, for the title goes.

I also have a horrible feeling that we’ll go into our final home game against Man U unbeaten for them to piss on our parade.

  • JuandeInternational April 6, 2017 at 1:07 pm

I agree. Being a Spurs fan over the years has been a white knuckle ride of pain and disbelief. For every moment of glory there has been a 4-3 vs City in the FA cup, or going 1 up vs Woolwich knowing that there was a reason why they named one of the fanzines with a certain title.

There was a reason old red nose could give a team talk saying “Lads, it’s Tottenham”.

But in recent months could it possibly be that we are seeing the end of that mental fragility and the development of a true “that’s not going to happen” attitude that winners posses? Could it finally be that we have a boss who has instilled a sense that to win you have to compete every minute you are involved and won’t tolerate any players who believe they’ve arrived simply because they’ve joined from a smaller team and are simply enjoying being at a major club?

Maybe we won’t win anything this season, but all I ask for are signs of small steps and gradual progress in the right direction, not the two steps forward one back we’ve endured over the last twenty-odd years.

Now, if someone can come up with a plan for what we can do with Sissoko…

  • Caspurs♿️ April 6, 2017 at 12:49 pm

  • Camus April 6, 2017 at 12:19 pm

H is right. Great sides find a way to get a result, even when they’ve been poor all game, and we did that – in style, as it turned out. I’d almost, almost written it off but when the equaliser went in, I was so relieved. To win it was amazing. This never-say-die attitude is new for Spurs – I’ve only seen it under MP’s reign. I have big respect for him for that.

  • legover April 6, 2017 at 12:12 pm

Sensational for 8 mins. Pants for 88 mins. The result was everything. Hopefully a good win against Watford at the weekend.(that’s probably put the tin hat on it). Kane back. Rose back. Wanyama back for the crunch matches coming. Still struggle with the tippy tappy possession across the last third. This team is crying out for a couple of top quality creative/striker players in that area. This is the area Levy always fails to address because it involves investment in the squad. Sissoko is the worst signing ever. Janssen tries hard but as much as I like his commitment he lacks the basic skill needed at this level.Yes he holds the ball up because he has his back to goal most of the time and then falls over.If you watch his movement when Eriksen and Deli have the ball it is very poor as he does not seem to know where to position himself to receive the ball. Look at Ali as an example of how it should be done. Janssen did fall over their keeper though which was a defining moment in the match. I doubt the Swans manager was to impressed with his keepers refusal to come off. That gave us the extra time to turn the match. Bet he is popular 🙂

Proud to say Ronnie and I both had it at 3-1, Ron supremely confident, me not so much.

Game plan for future, at least till HK10 returns. Vinnie starts and takes two or three runs directly at the oppo keeper. All keepers will have been stretchered off or standing there in blithering insensibility. Post that, our new left back N’Voodoo and Bonzo rain in crosses, with the occasional surgical pass from CE23. Alli and 7th Son score at will. The pots are ours. Done, the Double.

    • The Tottinghams April 6, 2017 at 1:50 pm

  • Citizen Smozz April 6, 2017 at 12:01 pm

Unlike me last night as I missed the first 25 minutes as I didn’t realise the time, forgot my lucky socks and boxers which I changed into at halftime and then to my horror realised that Wanyama was in fact Sissoko!!!! Shit I thought and started to panic, however we certainly were all over them like Spurts navy suite!
Fair play to Jansen, gorgeous little touch for sonny’s goal and what a pass by Dele to Christian Erection who slipped it home with aplomb 😂
Happy days, I have this sneaky little feeling that all that nasty “we don’t want Tottenham to win the league” business this time last year from those despicable blue racists might just come back and I believe in calmer……..
Harold I gotta say I believed, if we catch em my belief will garner me £2K 💰💰💰
And if we don’t it won’t have cost me no more then £20 as I shall soon be collecting £100 off two sad little Goonetts very soon 😂

Moose dribbling forward certainly helped….back 4 having potshots from 35 yards did not help. Vinny is a better fit in our setup than Son, and I won’t listen to comments to the contrary. And never go full Sissoko….

  • UnkleTaff April 6, 2017 at 11:37 am

Kane, Wanyama, Rose, Lamela and Lloris were all missing last night. That’s almost half our first team. Yet still we emerged triumphant.

Reports of our squad being too thin have been greatly exaggerated.

  • patspur April 6, 2017 at 11:25 am

I’d had enough by the 86th minuet so I nipped for a poo. I’ve also got constipation. Either way it was all an equally gripping 10 mins.

Apparently you missed the earlier blogs where words such as “shit, poo, nard, dump” have been replaced with “Sissoko”.

  • Vikingyid April 6, 2017 at 11:23 am

It was a horrendous performance, not that Swansea made it easy forbid parking the bus after getting the important first goal, but as you say the last 5/10 mins showed we have character and desire we have lacked in recent seasons. What put the icing on the cake was the rejected gooner time wasting in goal trying to be a hero, and I just knew it was going to bite him on the ass. 3rd goal was class Eriksenhas shown some real class this season with his passing and finishing. But we really need a better squad, nothing on the bench filled me with confidence last night.
But great win in the end let’s hope we can keep this run going and hope a couple of teams can hold Chelsea back.
On the plus side Liverpool city and Utd dropping points puts us in a good position for the top four which is the least we can expect now.
A nice fa cup final thrown in the mix would make this a successful season imo.

  • Chi Y-Word April 6, 2017 at 11:15 am

We should have been out of site in the first 10mins, but Sonnys run in with Dele in the Burnley game (Dele wasnt impressed that he didn’t square the ball, before Dele set up Son for the second), lead him to be a bit too unselfish and try and play Sissoko in, who predictably spannered it. Good to see us come back from behind, Vinny was very good and held the ball up really well, which is what we needed to get players forward late in the game. All in all, distinctly average for 88mins, phenomenal for 9.

Take in my washing, I gave up on the game at minute 87. I gave up, they didn’t. It would not have been possible to type that line anytime since 1991. I’ve gritted my teeth, to the final whistle, on some horrible Spurs results over the years (a 4-0 at the lane by Liverpool mid-70s not the worst of those) and yet I never once made for the exit, but I gave it up last night, gave up twitching at my phone with 3 minutes to go, after all the mountains moved this season, I thought a side with no Lloris, Rose, Wanyama and Kane – against a side with 4 ex-Spurs in it – could not possibly get out of jail and I did not want to see the wild celebrations at the Liberty by fans with white scarves. My gut said Carroll would get the second. I bottled it, Tottenham didn’t, Tottenham didn’t … if I typed that a million times it would still not add up.
