Say It Ain’t So, Joe

By The Boy -

Hello pop-pickers.

Sometimes when you stare at a situation long enough, you can suffer from starting to see what you want to see.

It’s hardly a mortal sin, rather a human frailty most of us are prone to.

Earlier today, it was put to me that our illustrious chairman could be returning from the USA with not just the blueprint of brave new world in his attache case, but a decree that declares his intent to stay at the helm of The Good Ship Lollypop Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Once my heart had begun to stop sinking, I was trying to work out how, and the permutation of circumstances that would allow it to happen aren’t that far fetched.

If ENIC as an entity can walk away with the colossal return on their investment that they seek, then what prevent call me Daniel from buying himself a CEO position in the footballing side of the business?

Perhaps the alleged bungle in the negotiations put paid to the suggestion. I sincerely hope so.

However, it makes sense if his stopping on was gently framed as a deal-breaker.

It also makes sense if we look at the character of the chairman.

Does he strike you as a man who’s race is run, one that will be content seeing out his days on a marginally less gigantic boat than Joe Lewis’?

Or is it more believable that Il Duce will want to retain his power, and let the client reference numbers watch him retain his command?

A sadness in this, is that much if not all of the good that is about to be done, will be muted.

The architect of the pettiness, the hesitancy and the general mismanagement of the last 14 odd years will give himself a royal seal of approval.

Supporters want the football to benefit from what is potentially seismic change. This is something that is simply unthinkable should the business not embrace a wholesale change in its culture.

Roy Keane’s comment, “lads, it’s Tottenham” won’t be a reference to how things used to be. It’ll be how things are.

Spurs are supposed to be Lilywhite, not Lily livered.

This club may well find itself in suddenly part of something incredibly exciting, but as far as the football is concerned, little if anything would change.

Has ENIC been a disaster compared to what preceded it?

No.

Nor has anyone (to the best of my knowledge) ever made such a stupid assertion.

If you complain about the state of the NHS, are you really expected to suffer being told, ‘Oh you should’ve been here a few centuries ago – they were using leeches!’

ENIC’s time is up.

For the business to be sold yet retain the same director is a self defeating exercise.
