Land management guru Daniel Levy told Sky Sports News:

“I’m 100 per cent confident. Every single player that we want to keep, I can assure you will be playing for Tottenham Hotspur next season,”

“Mauricio’s strategy has always been that if an opportunity arises that he thinks can improve the squad then we will need to look at it, but January is always a very difficult window.”

Of course, the ‘that we want to keep’ is the killer line in there, but it is a short list of players that anyone sane at Tottenham would want to not keep.

We’ve been here before far too many times and inevitably the bids come in, the players go and it’s rebuild rebuild.. what’s he building in there?

Dele Ali will get an enhanced deal before the summer as too will Harry Kane.

Regardless of how hard it is, this window IS important; the World Cup is on this summer which will showcase talent but is also a point where values are adjusted relative to the top players; ie, they’ll be more expensive. In addition we are in the CL playoffs, (we may not be next season). As such, our buying power (bang for buck) is probably at its optimum.

We need to strengthen the squad in a couple of key areas with quality replacements (not up and coming potential). Clearly Dembele is on the skids and (once again) we need a midfield general. I also think we need to find a decent back-up to Eriksson/Alli – Lamella may help, but given that the game has descended into the top 6-7 clubs having to break down bus parking defences, we need something else; something creative, something unexpected and/or something powerful.

Poch has not convinced me yet that he really understands how to attack. He seems to throw things at an attack but relies heavily on the likes of Kane and Son to really do the unscripted, heavy lifting. If this were not the case we’d see Llorente on with Trippier also on and the team peppering the box with high crosses.

I don’t really see a “strategy” at play, more the creation of a scenario where things might happen. To me that’s not very deliberate, makes an off day for Kane a potential 2-3 points lost and does not allow for changes of approach if that scenario is neutralised by a solid defence.

Given the numbers in the box defending against us, I’m surprised we do not practice longer range attacks: we have the ball at 20 yards out and switch it from side to side rather than making a yard and giving it some welly (think Lampard).

Another forward would be nice, but would we actually use them? Would they find the room against a 10 man defence? However, a midfield player with a decent shot on them would not just get amongst the goals, but defenders would have to come out of the box to close such a man down, creating more options.

We have the chance NOW to try to get a top quality midfield general. We have showcased the club in Europe, have the promise of the new ground and currently have some of Europes most sought after players. The summer will see the World Cup make a nonsense of player values and will be a feeding frenzy for agents.

Levy will no doubt love swimming with the sharks in the summer, but right now is the time to be active.

  • StuSpurs January 11, 2018 at 9:31 pm

I don’t like the ‘confident’ instead of ‘certain’ expression either. Even if it’s 100%. Confidence means jack shit when it comes to dealing with players and agents

Whether it is deemed a bad or a good thing, the word ‘regeneration’ seems to be blithely misused: not to mean renewing an urban area and improving the conditions of its present inhabitants, but wholesale sweeping away of the old environment to replace it with something entirely different. And routinely more costly, this means social upheaval, and oftentimes social cleansing.

Another victory for Newspeak. George Orwell, nothing has changed.

    • caveman January 11, 2018 at 5:51 pm

Everything will change but the locals won’t notice it. They’ll be long gone.

      • gloster1861 January 11, 2018 at 6:01 pm

Correct. In the 80s living in Wandsworth, the newly elected Tory Council started regenerating the area. A large estate of blocks of imposing council flats called Armoury Way in a very good location was ‘regenerated’. This meant deporting the tenants ‘temporarily’ to Streatham during upgrades. They never returned. All were sold off. The new buyers duly solidified the Tory grip on what had been a marginal area. Battersea was tarted up next.

        • Caspurs♿️ January 11, 2018 at 6:05 pm

I believe Armoury way would have been refitted in late 80s or early 90s, because before then it was one of the main places to get drugs around that area, and fakin dodgy it was too, even though the police station was opposite.

          • gloster1861 January 11, 2018 at 6:12 pm

Earlier than that Caspurs. I left the area in 91 and it was all sold off and gone by then. But you’re right, it was a risky area. But no money was invested in these properties while they were occupied by tenants. Only when they were made fit to sell off. And that’s the tragedy.

Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “This is a milestone year for the Club as we look ahead to the opening of our new stadium and all that it will bring to the area of Tottenham.
“The announcement of the first game of the NFL’s 2018 London Games to take place at our new home heralds the commencement of our 10-year partnership. This is one of the cornerstones of our vision for creating a world-class sports and leisure destination that will make Tottenham a hive of activity 365 days a year and drive the regeneration of one of the most deprived areas of London.”

    • gloster1861 January 11, 2018 at 5:30 pm

    From the OS

“Mark Waller, NFL Executive Vice-President of Events and International, said: “This is another important year as we develop our plans for London and the UK. We are very excited about playing our first game at Tottenham’s magnificent new stadium and will follow our usual pattern of playing one game in our first season at a new venue, as we did at Wembley and Twickenham in previous years. This enables us to achieve important learnings relating to the fans’ preferences, ticketing, team logistics and local transportation and infrastructure in order to create the best possible experience and environment. We will play an additional game at Tottenham in a future season, over and above the planned two per year, to make up for this.”

Amazing we’re really getting there. But I thought we’ve been guaranteed at least 2 NFL games per season (NFL website only shows the one).

      • SeattleSpursGuy January 11, 2018 at 4:30 pm

The articles are kind of unclear but I had the impression it would be one game next season and two the following season.

        • Caspurs♿️ January 11, 2018 at 4:55 pm

It will be two games a year, it’s being reported we’ll host 3 games in one year (next year probably) to make up for only having one game this year.

#thfc Sadiq Khan: “This year they’ll be one game because TH are perfectionists – as are the NFL. They’ll bed it in and have two [NFL] games here next year.”

#thfc NFL chief Waller says just one fixture “enables us to achieve important learnings relating to the fans’ preferences, ticketing, team logistics and local transportation and infrastructure in order to create the best possible experience and environment.”

Every sentence that issues forth from Dr No is spun like the finest of webs. “Every single player that we (meaning ENIC) want to keep “ which basically is a catch all caveat that means any player could leave. “January is always a difficult window” meaning the Poundland model is less likely to work on the last day of the window as it does in the summer. If Pooch has a suggestion “then we will need to look at it” before ignoring it and buying a Nocluedo or Sh*tsoko. Listening to Levy is like listening to May. No sincerity, just meaningless sound bites aimed at what is perceived to be plebs who have to be micro managed and fed bullsh*te as they are just a mechanism to sustain the status quo..
