Proof We Weren’t Robbed

By The Boy -

Forensic Onions made a point this morning that struck a chord.

I actually alluded to this a couple of weeks ago after the Bournemouth game, when we seemed to bang in five goals almost by accident.

This was the footballing ying to that yang. You could also say it was payback for the Utd away game when were were abysmal, but somehow came away with a 3-0 win.

Forensic Onions Analysis

To be honest, it was only reading the comments of Spurs fans bleating after the game that caused that bell to ring.

We weren’t robbed and we didn’t deserve to win.

When we beat Manchester United 3-0 earlier in the season – at Old Trafford – it didn’t make any sense. I tried to communicate this at the time, and as per usual, very few people were of a mind to even think about it.

Had anyone bothered to go through the stats of that game, you see two simple conclusions appear.

United were industrious, but not good enough, and Spurs managed to squeak a win a 0-3 win just by taking their chances.

Jose Mourinho was for once entitled too be quietly fuming, as his boys had created endless chances and failed miserably to convert a single one.

Whereas Poch watched his charges take 3 shots and each of them went in.

Revolucion t shirt

Expected goals v Manchester United

Spurs weren’t quite as virile against Ole’s mob as Jose’s mob were against us, but you get the drift.

Tottenham’s xG ration was 2.15 and United’s was 1. 22.

Spurs had TWICE as many shots on on goal (23) to United’s (12), but hitting the target counts for nothing.

Comparing the efforts of both sides, Spurs were lucky to get nil, and not get sued for Actual Bodily Harm by some frail old fan in the crowd.

And where would we be without the thick fans’ favourite, the possession stats.

What a shocker. We had more of the ball and managed to do less with it. For the 627th time in recent memory.

The overwhelming conclusion is that we weren’t sharp enough and, as per usual, had nothing either within the starting XI or on the bench to make any meaningful change.

Llorente should be playing for someone like Stoke and Lamela is doing a good impression of someone on loan from another side.

Thanks. Each game lives its own life and I find it strange to make analyses and conclusions on the aggregated result of two individual premier league matches.
Yesterday I felt we had strong dominance in second half and we had many big chances that we normally would convert to goals. We just needed a goal to turn the game. Had we scored once I am pretty certain that we would have been pressing really hard to get the winning goal. I had the belief until the 95th minutes that we would get something out of this game. Context is everything.

We were ‘better’ in the second half because suddenly we had the most to lose if we were not better. Relatively, it’s easier to be better when your immediate goal is parity and the pressure of outright winning is removed. Far harder to be the ones that set the agenda and control the outcome.

Going 0-1 down provided us with the motivation to focus more, work harder and take the initiative to them but we were already losing. Teams that win things and regularly beat the other best teams more often than not find these higher abilities and take the initiative when the score is 0-0. Yes there was an initial error that contributed to us going 0-1 down but it did not lead absolutely to it because the manure players still had to master a bunch of other skills based/pressure sensitive scenarios to actually score. They did and we did not.

On the face of it it’s very plausible to write last night off as being fate, hand of god type stuff and righteously buy into any of the we woz robbed.. how did we not score.. we were the better team.. scenarios and on any individual night it can genuinely feel like that is the case but once you zoom out and see just how many times we characterise our losses in crucial matches in this manner and compare that to how many times we have actually won stuff, versus the teams that rarely have cause to resort to this righteously aggrieved narrative because they do win stuff, then it becomes apparent that we are either thee unluckiest and most erred against team in the history of sport OR there is something else going on, much more difficult to digest and much closer to home.

In short, the answer is in the title of the song, ‘It Ain’t What You Do, It’s The Way That You Do It’.

Statistically, our 0-3 game should have been at least 3-3 because United threatened far more convincingly, but failed to take their chances.

Yesterday, we also failed get the best return on our opportunities.

Were Spurs robbed?

Yes, but not by United.

We need to put the ball into the net, not just get it on target.

I honestly never felt as if we were going to win yesterday.

Whereas when we beat them 0-3 before, they looked all huff and puff on that occasion.

Hope that makes sense!

Agree x10. Yes we played well in the second half after an APPALLING first half, but if you don’t put away any of those golden chances, you don’t deserve to win a game.
The players put in poor quality and go FA all out. Deservedly so. Still, good lord it was a frustrating game.

Hi Harry. I don’t really get your comments to the Spurs-United game. One way to view of the game is pure statistics. The other view would be us supporters viewing the match based on our own subjective perception of big chances, possession or critical referee decisions. This view would normally be subjective based on our support for our own team. Going back to the statistical view. The ultimate statistics from the game is 0-1. They scored once and we scored zero. We lost the game. Can’t argue against the result, it is what it is. In my view all other statistical measures is an attempt to create more detailed objective measures. You mentioned: expected goals (2.15 vs 1.22), shots on target (23 vs 12), possession (63% vs 37%) etc….
Long intro but here is my question. Please help me out: If all of these detailed statistical measurements is showing a clear Spurs dominance isn’t then the conclusion that the wrong team won this game? If the answer is yes then it is the same as my subjective Spurs view. COYS

Ben Davies selection over Danny Rose confused me. Trippier has proven once and for all why he was always Walkers understudy. Problem we have at RB KWP is still learning and Aurier is as bad as Trippier.

Lots of talk about the second half performance. My problem here is why wait 45 mins and a goal down to decide to play ?

Too many times against better opposition we fall short. Too many times we come out with the same excuses as to why.

The answer lies with ENIC perhaps more Spurs fans should ask them to explain themselves………

Taking this game in isolation, we should have won it with the calibre of chances created. Irrespective of De Gea, our finishing was off yesterday, and that is what cost us. If someone offered me those chances in every game vs the “big” sides I would bite their hand off.

The potential injuries sustained are a bigger concern.

As long as Trippier and Davies are our first choice full backs we don’t deserve anything. We were the better team, but at 0-1 you could sense the desperation from the forwards. You are right. Shots on goal does not mean much. De Gea is a great GK, everyone knows that. I blame Trippier for this defeat.

That being said, the ref was terrible in this game. Pogba should have been sent off and the penalty shout from Kane looked of the blatant sort. Unlucky to lose Sissoko, but it happens. It’s easy to talk, but I would have preferred Skipp over Lamela to battle and stress Pogba.

I do believe the teams were pretty equal. Trying not to be bias I think we were slightly better. An error lead to their goal. what I don’t truly understand in this multi million pound business is how you can have one man with the power to dictate what goes on. Mike Dean who I believe was in charge was awful. His decision making was shocking and his interpretation of the laws was inconsistent. VAR spoils the flow of a game, but not so much as a terrible referee.

the match reminded me of something. You can not deserve to win (yet do) and not deserve to lose but also not be robbed. Last night we didn’t “deserve” to lose but on the same note, we didn’t do anything to give a valid argument as to why not. I have said it before on this forum – shots on target is a worthless stat to be proud of because if they are straight down the keepers throat then they offer nothing. Sometimes a shot off target is a lot closer to going in. anyway. Last night we huffed and puffed but didn’t really test their keeper. They used the tools at their disposal and snatched a win. If we cant score when Phil Jones is in central defence then we don’t deserve it!

On a “silver lining” side. The talk of us being contenders is out the window for another year, so perhaps we can get top 3 and focus on a cup? Biggest issue last night for me was not the result but the lack of options on the bench to change things…and then to lose potentially 2 players more in area’s with little to no cover.

For me this loss falls on Poch for poor team selection at the outset and questionable tactical decisions after Sissoko left. Playing Davies and Jan on the left of defense had me worried from the start as neither is a speed machine and post match comments by United players confirmed they saw it as a potential area of weakness to be exploited by fast breaks. I would much rather have seen Sanchez and Banjo Rose as they are quicker and offer more offensively. It is also time to relegate Trippier from first choice and give KWP his chance. Although Trippier improved in the second half he once again did his Eric Dier head up the backside Impersonation in the first. As for Alli I become increasingly convinced that he is not going to grow into the world class player we had all hoped for. I see little or no improvement in his decision making, his lack of a left foot leads to too many optimistic flicks with the outside of his right, his finishing is not clinical and I suspect he lacks the self critical attitude required to make himself better. I know there are many fans who still want him to become a Spurs legend but that is a case of hearts ruling heads and the truth is he just doesn’t deliver enough and lacks the drive of a Frank Lampard to relentlessly improve his weaknesses. Time to cash in while the stock is still relatively high as it is not going to get better with time. If they could get 80m for him there are players out there in that price range that can deliver more.
