Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino blasted the Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) despite it helping Spurs to victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Wembley last night.
Spurs fans love the line, ‘I suppose you want a return to the dark old days of..’ so is that it, Mauricio, you want to revisit this madness?
Initially, referee Michael Oliver didn’t give a foul by Chelsea keeper Kepa on Spurs skipper Harry Kane but another frustrating VAR review ended with him reversing his decision.
Kane scored from the spot, meaning Spurs take a slender 1-0 lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge in a game that was edged by the visitors.
But despite being the benefactors of the decision, Tottenham chief Pochettino admitted he wasn’t enamoured by the system.
“I don’t like the VAR. Today we get the benefit of it but after watching the World Cup and another league like La Liga I see that nobody is happy from day one that they started to use it,”
Pochettino
Wherever there are humans, there will be human error.
So get over yourself.
Levy won’t part with that kind of cash though…
Get him for a 10er probably.
Heh heh kick it out campaign.
We should by Fellaini

The 15% of times its a success is no way worth the total balls up it causes to the dynamic of the sport. That’s the problem, for the 1 clear cut error there’s 10 nonsense uses. Its baby with bathwater, I’d rather have the outrage of Mendes and save the sport…but then its pretty much gone to shat anyway so….why the hell not?!
Wimbledon of 1988 would smash City.

Yes the prospect of confronting Citeh in the final does not fill me with much optimism that we are likely to end our trophy drought!!
Yes provided we score the first goal on the night!
OK you made ya point….3 goals in 10 minutes
Ezavina Barclays Tappa
Following their 9-0 thrashing at least some Burton fans BBC tweets are still smiling!!
“It’s really annoying that Burton got in the way of that Man City training session”.
“So unlucky that the one coach that got there was the team coach”.
“Man City will be able to send out their under-15s for the second leg”.
Morning. H. Remember not so long ago you posted a very interesting piece about a Victorian lady who started the first bank in the country here in TOTTENHAM, what was her name again? Please.
They should have used VAR on the stadium build ….,,,,,
You think we’ll make the final?!!
Will any Bury supporters bother to attend the second leg???
The Americans will abolish it before long.
Odd sensation, but have a feeling we may get Chitty in the final
A lot of people miss the true benefit to the game as a whole from VAR, which was evident in the World Cup. It’s that players can no longer fall over at every opportunity to buy a free kick, get a player booked, or break up opposition attack’s by feigning injury, because the referee lets play develop, and if it ends up a goal everything in the build up is reviewed by the VAR operators just in case. Even commentary pointed out that Michael Oliver was letting the game flow, whilst ignoring the reason for that.
What VAR means is that there is no hiding place for the Neymar’s of the game who are more likely to be ridiculed post tournament, than lauded, and it’s bound to be worrying for overseas managers like Poch who have been brought up with simulation as part of the game, but they’ll get over it.
If you ever find yourself reminiscing about the good old days when a tackle was a tackle, then you should embrace VAR as the much needed recoil to the disease of diving.
The funny thing is, despite the difference in class (£530 mill to £1mill) in personnel, Burton still seem to be able to threaten the Citeh goal every now and again. They’re not all that at the back.
Uuuurgh…ugly
I love things that look out of place. I’ve got a lot of stainless/ally in my kitchen. and in the corner an old fire mans bucket. 🙂 stripped down a new SMEG to bare metal 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Not always. When something is clear (offside, out of play, crossed the line..) where its not subjective it works. When its about “was it a penalty…” then not so much. Rugby has got it right when it comes to video assistance, and even there it can slow the game too much if you have a lazy ref.
I appreciate, hell, even enjoy your subtle yet direct and precise view on the video assisted referee concept.
Do you think they used the phrase “play it again” in the VAR room this time around, and that maybe one of the assisting video (VHS or BETA) referees was Sam Ways of Vinnie County, shithampshire? 🙂
On the panel was Merson and Hayes. Martin Hayes? I thought ….No. Emma Hayes Chelsea Ladies manager…….quotas.
Good job.
If it is used for the “Backstop”, then yes.
Went on the train to Liverpool st station today , the stadium looks massive!!!! Totally dominates the areas skyline , seems out of place lol
Iooooooh Buuuurton
I’m going to be most distressed if Peterboro can’t break down Chelsea’s kids and win my money. They are children. Surely you can score you melts.
Ooooooooooooooooh
Burton
Was there ANY point in playing this fixture?
I have no idea whether VAR is a good or a bad thing. It’s not perfect which, errs it on the side of bad, I guess. By contrast, the goal decision system is perfect.
Perhaps the offside rule needs changing – a caller on the wireless today reckoned if you just made it about ‘feet’ being offside and not nostril hairs and fingernails, you could have chips in the players’ boots that would make the decision as soon as the calculations were done.
Change the offside rule, far simpler.
Oooooh Burton…
Hahaha! On a sky debate about what we have to do to win stuff a Spurs fan left a comment….I shat you not…” More clubs should live within their means ” !?! Suggesting Spurs are doing just that and we are an example.
This is what we are dealing with here. Does he know we have more debt than Man Utd? That we are spiralling down a disaterous hole? That we have stopped investing ANYTHING in the players altogether??
Levy’s tickets are gonna be safe selling like hotcakes with this poor hoodwinked lot. I don’t want to be associated with this nonsense. What’s happened to THFC?
There was resistance in Rugby for ages, and cricket. The issue is that it is still not used right in football, it will take trial and error…plus some intelligence. You only have to look at things like the offside rule to see football governing bodies have a track record of taking something, adjusting and stopping it working. VAR is a good thing, sometimes mistakes will be made, but lets face it, I would rather 95% than 50/50.
I like the LGBTQ diversity that VAR brings to the game
Its opinion and perspective no matter how many people watch an incident how many times. Doesn’t work with this sport and kills the very essense of it.
Im a luddite. Bollox to VAR.
VAR is for wanky snowflakers.
Fuck off VAR.
Lets come up with a reason to disallow every goal.
Suck my balls VAR.
This stadium shit is making my gout worse
