To dare is to dare to dream, innit?

Could it be that Mauricio is plotting an audacious strategy, one that includes throwing the kitchen sink at our Champions League campaign?

Pochettino said: “… in English culture, it is the Premier League and then the FA Cup. The Champions League and Europa League are important but they are not at the level of the Premier League.

“It is so difficult to explain to people on the outside. Only when you are here you understand that the Premier League is massive for every club, the players too. In Spain or Italy, they prioritise the Champions League over the domestic competition.”

The Champions League is surely no less gruelling than the Premier League, although you could succinctly argue that no football manager ever got the bullet for losing four games in a row in that particular tournament.

Regular readers of this drivel will know I am hungry for silverware, hungry like a f___ing junkie for that ‘I’m outside now’ text message from his man.

im reading some trouble abóut Dier being counted as ‘homegrown’

    • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 1:04 pm

He isn’t counted as homegrown because he was in an academy in Portugal. Stupid rule as he is capped for England.

      • OrganicPaper September 13, 2017 at 1:20 pm

true, but Bentaleb was a home grown player for us despite being Algerian. Same for CCV although he was born in Southend and went to my school 🙂

  • Syd September 13, 2017 at 12:58 pm

Aurier should be used to this Dortmund type of play…quite similar to the french league

  • McG September 13, 2017 at 12:51 pm

No need for us to mess with our formation, and no point experimenting for poss our most important home match of the group. Son in for Deli, Dembele in for Sissy, Llorente to come on if required late in the game, simples. Be interesting to see if Aurier gets his debut? Some saying he will, others not. I’m hoping so personally, but maybe Sat’s the better option.

    • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 12:53 pm

If Trippier plays, Dier will have to be sharp covering his forward runs.

      • McG September 13, 2017 at 12:57 pm

That’s Sanchez job… I’d ilke to see Aurier but thats quite a daunting debut!

I thought Toby was playing in the RCB position and Davinson is between him and Jan?

          • Dusty September 13, 2017 at 1:37 pm

That is how they played against Everton so don’t see any reason why they should change it. You need someone with speed (Sanchez) to chase back if needed. 🙂

    • OrganicPaper September 13, 2017 at 12:58 pm

      Voice of reason, McG.
Ive no doubt Kane can play as a 10 but its not necessary to jigg around that much at this point in time. This will be a very, very tough match which we will have to be on top form to get anything out of.
The biggest risk id be prepared to imagine is Sissy getting the nod ahead of Son. Thats not necessary my preference but I think Poch might go that way

      • McG September 13, 2017 at 1:05 pm

I’d be surprised re Sissy, he played the full 90 on Sat if I recall?

      • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 12:54 pm

Yep. Kane can play behind him in the hole, not as a two up front.

        • Syd September 13, 2017 at 12:55 pm

          Yes, thats exactly my thought

      • McG September 13, 2017 at 12:56 pm

in relation to 2 strikers at the same time…it’s different opinions…but we are at home against a side missing a couple of their regular back four.

    • Freund or Foe September 13, 2017 at 11:21 am

I don`t see it as any different to how we normally play. Kane can play the Dele role effectively. He looked very good in this position at the end of the England game the other day, set up one goal and quite a few other chances, from mammary. I know it sounds strange to move one of the best strikers in the world away from a striker position, but I think it could work.

      • Caspurs♿️ September 13, 2017 at 11:26 am

Lets see if Poch pulls a rabbit out of his hat. I am worried as said before Poch might not treat this competition as we might. I want us to win every game. Put the strongest team on each game that suits your tactics for that game.

          • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 11:37 am

Time to give it a pwoper go. Get out of the group and it might elevate us to pot two in any future CL draw.

      • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 11:34 am

Llorente is very much a target man and could be great with a supply of passes from Davies and Aurier. Kane could get in the goals big time with some good knock downs from Llorente. Gives us a different dimension, route 1 for the Krauts to cope with in addition to Eriksen and Dier threading passes forward.

I feel we could get a penalty tonight.

        Coolio dude.

  • Camus September 13, 2017 at 10:48 am

The best way to get the most out of Kane is definitely to get him to score fewer goals by playing another striker up there to take his space and chances away.
    No question.

  • UnkleTaff September 13, 2017 at 10:24 am

Llorente’s experience could be vital this evening. I’d definitely start him if it were up to me. With Kane filling the Alli-shaped hole.

    • Caspurs♿️ September 13, 2017 at 10:29 am

So Kane to play the show boating role then…

      • UnkleTaff September 13, 2017 at 10:33 am

…whilst still managing to score a couple of vitally important goals, yes.

        • Camus September 13, 2017 at 10:35 am

Field both of our strikers – the only 2 we have in the squad – in a system that only employs 1 striker. That sounds like something Poch would do, yes.

          • Syd September 13, 2017 at 10:37 am

and you want to play two strikers?

  • gloster1861 September 13, 2017 at 10:08 am

Dortmund have lost notable players and have a few injuries tonight.

We’ve shipped out Carroll, Chadli, Mason from that last dismal night and should be stronger. I’d be a lot more confident if Wanyama was playing.

    • AccringtonSpurs September 13, 2017 at 10:11 am

Playing Wanyams means we’d be at full strength. As things are,, I’d be happy with Dembele in there – wrestling control of the midfield. It’s as if Dier (DM) will be acting more as a CM, spraying passes around, and Dembele (CM) will be doing most of the DM work in Wanyam’s absence. Between them, we’ve got this.

Next summer at the World Cup I think the media should get with the programme and stop referring to the WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends). These days it should be SAPs (Spouses and Partners).

          • East Stand September 13, 2017 at 8:27 am

It will be interesting to see how often Loriente and Kane start together, not very would be my guess.

You can’t go too attacking in the C.League at home, a team like Dortmund know what to do away, you have to take your time over it and win the important battles first. Possession alone isn’t enough but you need a fair amount of the ball.

Didn’t this mob do us last season?

      • gus September 13, 2017 at 12:17 am

That is typical of Nike, just look at the new NBA uniforms and they similarly lack creativity. But at the end of the day it’s all about the money. What do expect from the company that gave us this? TBH though I like the home and away kits which are better than UA’s efforts

  • East Stand September 12, 2017 at 11:43 pm

All the 3rd Premiership kits Nike have done for us Chavs n Citeh look like the same design. Nike obviously can’t be arsed. The design of the home kit is pretty boring too, I’m all for minimal design but it’s not an excuse for zero creativity and imagination…

    • mikespurs September 13, 2017 at 12:15 am

Im not crazy about the new ones either. Dont hate them but liked the blue yellow more from last year

      • East Stand September 13, 2017 at 8:40 am

I came to like last season’s home kit.

Nike are just a bit boring, not terrible but boring. They do basically the same kit for everyone only with different colours and logos. Fans want something more exclusive to their team I reckon.

      • Gus September 12, 2017 at 8:49 pm

4 games in and they’ve waved the white flag. To think FdB was linked with us before Poch

        • East Stand September 12, 2017 at 9:36 pm

I’m not sure Palace had the squad to adapt to what FDB wanted to do, on the other hand he should have been flexible enough to realise that he might have to compromise in the short term. To play like Ajax you need players that can do it.

      • East Stand September 12, 2017 at 9:33 pm

Good luck to Woy. Ok he’s not everyones cup of tea but to me he always tries to be respectful of the opposition and although ‘boring’ isn’t full of shit like so many people in football now.

Jose is a winner, ok great but so was Bill Nic but did he behave like a spoiled child 90% of the time? Woy represents at least some last vestige of decency in the game and before he retires he gets to manage his boyhood club.

He speaks several languages and has managed successfully abroad but that means very little in a sport dominated by media courting gob shites.

Good luck Woy, I hope he keeps Palace up.

  • Sir4u September 12, 2017 at 7:19 pm

Some of you have some sort of issues in regards to memory.

KING were the last one out.

Now we have got the likes of Kane, Winks, Onomah (A Villa), KWP, CCV (sheffield Utd) wearing the lilywhite shirt.

They also sold Carroll, Mason, Bentaleb, Pritchard etc.

Now, we have got the next generation, Edwards, Booth, Georgiou, Sterling, Robles, Tangana, Walkes etc.

For each generation the harder it gets to reach top level, especially since we also buy the best talent ie. Alli, Dier, Sanchez etc.

We might even sign Sessagnon (making it harder for KWP – fullback on both sides, leavig Poch with a headache with either selling trippier och lettig KWP go, and Martial (Sterling – see KWP).

Spurs have one of the best academies, however a few of them are stuck with the development, as somebody explained it further down.

Not just the players that need to develop, even the fans have to.. 😊

So, after the late summer window activity, can we say that the Academy isn’t quite what Daniel was making out in New York?

Whom, if anyone, is going to get time on the pitch? KWP will, but realistically can’t see CCV or Edwards getting much of a look in.

Oakley-Booth and Georgiou were involved in preseason – although that rarely counts for anything, gives an indication of who Poch wants to look at next.

I think Jack Roles will be the next big thing to come out of the academy, but he’s young.

      • gloster1861 September 12, 2017 at 6:03 pm

Yes, I saw Jack Roles play quite well in the Youth Cup.

He’ll do well in the cheese room as long as he doesn’t get in a pickle.

            • MysteriousStranger September 12, 2017 at 6:26 pm

He’ll be fine. He’s from a decent batch.

              • Caspurs♿️ September 12, 2017 at 6:45 pm

I’m sure he’ll rise to the occasion.

    TopOfThePochs
Lamela is a right off until he eventually returns & proves he’s not busted.
N’Koudou is another write off until he proves he can have a lasting impact on the first team, so far he’s showed he can do a bit of a Townsend.
Wanyama is obviously a big miss along with Dele – still not quite enough depth though.
We’re relying on Sissoko to shock everyone and be brilliant all season.
Not getting at least one more attacking player to push those players in behind Kane could cost us and see us as nearly men.

Strewth, I’d be shocked if he was brilliant once.

The justice system in this country’s fucked. How can a bright young man (spurs fan) with his whole future ahead of him, who makes a silly mistake, go to prison for three years (costing much money) then come out under weight addicted to spice with no future ahead of him and not give a fuck about spurs anymore. People think getting of the brown is hard. Nothing compared to spice.

  • TopOfThePochs September 12, 2017 at 3:33 pm

I think with the quality we have to face this yea we will be going at it full tilt and treating the League Cup as a kids game – literally.
It was clear from Dembeles omission at the weekend that he’s being saved to try to boss the midfield against Dortmund. good squad management.
    Id plump for

    ———————–Lloris————————

    —————Sanchez Toby Verts————-

    Aurier ————————————Davies

    —————–Dier —— Dembele————

    ——Eriksen-sen-sen…………Son———–

    ————————Kane———————-

Vorm, Trips, KWP, Winks, Sissoko, Llorente

We may have bought some players in but that bench is still way too light.

    • Devonshirespur September 12, 2017 at 3:36 pm

      Agree with all that.

Lamela and Wanyama to return, and would strengthen the bench. Nkoudou is an unknown. Poch seems to have some faith in him, but ideally would have liked a Mahrez or similar to really compete on all fronts.

      • TopOfThePochs September 12, 2017 at 3:48 pm

    • AccringtonSpurs September 12, 2017 at 3:44 pm

If Daniel is serious about making the new stadium a place to watch exciting footie I’d expect him to strengthen the bench considerably next year and go all out. So far we’ve had a blind spot for recruiting decent attackers. The intent seems to be there, but the execution of the recruitment is not. Things didn’t work out this summer and we didn’t get any extra goal threat other than Llorente – who was bought for the long ball teams, apparently.

Next year, DL has to invest.

      • TopOfThePochs September 12, 2017 at 3:57 pm

To compete with the top teams this year, in addition to the business we did, Levy needed to bring in TWO attacking players of real quality and good experience IMO. Another older player and a not wet behind the ear younger player.

Players at big teams don’t expect to play every game which is why Chelsea & city have such depth.
Unfortunately said players also expect to be financially compensated for this. Until we are up and running in the new stadium this isn’t going to happen.

Until then lets hope the really are some gems in the academy.

        • Devonshirespur September 12, 2017 at 4:12 pm

I think two quality additions would have our squad at capacity. As it is we will have to keep Lamela, Son, NKudou and Sisokko happy when everyones fit so if you added say Barkley and Mahrez to that then there would be questions about how much game time these pricey additions would get. Upgrades on Sis & Nkou would be great but i think we’d struggle a bit if our squad was so large.

          • TopOfThePochs September 12, 2017 at 4:37 pm

Lamela hasn’t played for nearly a year, whatever the reason he’s nt going to impact the team this side of Christmas you feel.
NKoudou is upgradable, Sissoko hopefully will perform for his WC spot and be out the door in the summer.
At capacity is what we need to truly compete
We’re always a couple of players short of the finished article, this won’t help when players like Toby & Eriksen are considering their futures in the summer.

      • ronwol196061🇨🇦 September 12, 2017 at 5:02 pm

Im sure one new dynamic player will be in

    • AccringtonSpurs September 12, 2017 at 3:46 pm

Davies has come on a lot, just wish we’d gone for Bertrand a couple of years ago when he was available around the same time.

      • TopOfThePochs September 12, 2017 at 3:50 pm

Sessegnon will be their main target, the boys got the lot.

    • McG September 12, 2017 at 4:05 pm

That bench should also contain Rose, Lamela, Wanyama & Alli. Once injuries & suspensions out the way, we looking much better. Prob add Berkley come Jan too…

    • Ben September 12, 2017 at 4:31 pm

The bench is light but it’s not all bad, our squad itself isn’t actually very light considering the players we have out injuried/suspended.. I know it doesn’t help right now but with Lamela, Wanyama, GNK, Rose, and Alli all expected to return within the next couple of months things look very, very rosey indeed. Still got a good starting XI for tonight and a couple of options on the bench. A Mahrez/Barkley/similar would’ve completed the squad but if just one of Sissoko, Lamela or GNK come good then we’ll do very well this season! At least we have a striker on the bench now who can provide a proper goal threat. COYS.

I think what Poch means is that in Spain/Italy/Germany the leagues are so weak that the only real competition they get is the CL, and their domestic leagues amount to little more than friendlies. In England, there really are very few easy games, and even the easy games are substantially harder than your Average Bundesliga match for Bayern or Bayer.
