Matt Law of The Telegraph would appear to have one of those phones in his office that Commissioner Gordon (he of Batman fame) had in his.

Except Mr Law’s phoneline doesn’t go to some bloke in a cowl, but perhaps instead some bloke at The Lane. His current stream of insights certainly suggest so.

This week, we get the inside track on the frankly ridiculous Captaincy awards.

Apparently the decision to award the armband to Eunice and vice captaincies to Hugo and Ade was swayed, if not hinged upon what the team themselves thought.

Pochettino canvassed the opinion of his players on who would be best captain and vice captains.”

The suggestion is that Verts had lost the confidence of his teammates due to being incapable of masking his contempt for Tim Sherwood. And they voted or mumbled against him.

Quite why this would be made public is a strange one.

Sure, it serves to frame the recent abandonment of contract talks. But does it do anyone any good? I think it may well be a true account, and we’re getting it broken to us gently …that Vertonghen doesn’t have much of a future at Spurs.
