Gladys tells me that the Manchester City interest in Eric Dier came into being after a casual conversation between a representative of the club and Stijn Francis who is amongst other things, Toby Alderweireld’s agent.
The original interest was apparently in Toby, but that rapidly cooled upon being told by Francis that the immaculately coiffured 28 year old was soon to be signing a new deal that that would keep him at Tottenham for at least the next 3 seasons.
Not only was Toby staying, but he would be given a basic deal that would financially trump the existing deals in place for both Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.
As you may well be aware at this stage, there’s a busy bee bonus structure in play at THFC and so characters like Christian Eriksen and Ben Davies who have good but comparatively unspectacular base deals are able to gain parity with ‘better paid’ teammates. They achieve this by producing game changing performances. As Glad revealed not too long ago, Eriksen’s £70,000 a week had been routinely rolling in at £100,000 a week.
Over the past few seasons Spurs have been particularly agile in the old ‘extension’ game and it’s unlikely to be a long wait before Harry Kane’s deal gets enhanced again.
