Source at Manchester United have indicated to the Manchester Evening News that Toby Alderweireld is their most wanted defensive purchase this summer.

United were pipped at the post in both the Premier League and the FA cup this season and are now prepared to do what it takes to make sure that there is no repetition of those failures next term.

The Evening News then goes on to listΒ Vincent Janssen, Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko and Danny Rose (who is cited interestingly as a ‘former’ Manchester United target) as players that Spurs want to cash in on – to bolster their squad.

This flies in the face of those of us that were hopeful Tottenham would retain Toby.

My gut feeling is that Toby will have decent World Cup and find himself eminently buyable.

At the risk of repeating myself, it is all well and good selling a few minor duds, however there is a fundamental rethink of how Spurs behave in the transfer windows required.

It is not just difficult seeing the surplus players above raising much in cash terms, but it would also be relatively pointless if they were then replaced by ‘so so’ alternatives.

Toby has had a year to forget really with an injury and some games where his play was erratic and disjointed and feels he needs a change.may also feel that the wages at spurs are a stumbling block and gets a chance to win something with a new team and paid the wages he feels he deserves .yes I know he signed his contract but levy has backed him into a corner .just have to wait and see on this one.

Yeah, Levy hasn’t caught on to the fact that 40 million is the new 20 million.

SSG, Hazard cost Β£40m in 2012 or whenever the it was.

We are SO far out of the loop on transfers it is embarrassing.

  • Matt May 21, 2018 at 2:18 pm

Feels like both Toby and Dembele want to go. Agree, replacing 5-6 players never works so keeping Rose may now be a better bet (never thought I’d say that). I’m not so sure about Toby having a good WC, he’s looked well off the pace since returning. That said I hope he does, and we get another 10m and he gets a great last payday.

  • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 2:09 pm

We’ve got to be practical and not just airy fairy. We want to broaden and deepen the squad. We’d like to see some NEW money spent on adding say two quality additions to the first team pool.

At the same time two ageing players appear to be leaving. Selling them and buying two young good replacements with their sale proceeds is essential.

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 2:10 pm

      Sensible.

I would add that the CM position is the place to REALLY spend.

      • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 2:13 pm

Ronwol, why not play Dele at CM? He’s got the drive, the skill and vision, and when he has played deeper he’s seen much more of the ball, which is HH’s big criticism of Dele. We can then play Moura further forward.

    • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 2:10 pm

To be clear, that would be four arrivals. Two replacements for Toby and Dembers, plus two further reinforcements from NEW money.

      • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 2:05 pm

If Barrios is another Dembele, again, it makes sense to fund the young guy with the sale of the old.

Ifs are not good solid foundations for building on. We buy De Ligt anyway, bed him in slowly, then when Toby hangs his boots up we’ll have a replacement. If he doesn’t make the grade at least we ain’t looking over at Toby winning trophy’s at Utd going, “oh well, one day..”

Spurs had the best defence in the league for two years once Toby came in at CB. Coincidentally, those were the only two years in a generation that Spurs seriously challenged for the title.

That’s what Enic would be selling to Man U.

I said in a previous blog, today, that we were linked to everyone. I was being sarcastic. What does concern me is what appears to be today’s cost for a quality player, however you define quality. My concern is that I think Levy will fork out for the 20-25 million player and for that you can get β€˜some’ quality. I don’t see him spending Davinson Sanchez money, ie: 40+, or more, this summer, to improve the squad. I hope I am wrong.

    • SeattleSpursGuy May 21, 2018 at 1:49 pm

Yeah, Levy hasn’t caught on to the fact that 40 million is the new 20 million.

    • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:50 pm

This is the dilemma Horndog. To get the good ones young before the price shoots up. This requires good scouting, but it’s not what we do well at present. And we don’t have the cajones to go shoulder to shoulder with the heavy hitting clubs because we can’t afford to waste big money.

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:53 pm

Poch has to be more proactive and also put it on the line. Either that or he is in with Levys program.

Poch has been playing Levys game up to now as it has suited him. It gave a chance for the world to see what Poch can do and maybe Poch also needed to convince himself he was capable.
Now its different. Pochs created a buzz about himself now. So other teams will be eager to take him.
Now the conversation between Poch and Levy should change according to how confident Poch is.
            This is the leverage.
We have no idea where they are at and nobody wants to give away their hands

        • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:58 pm

I am reminded of the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War. He was asked why he didn’t take bigger risks with his strategy. He said I’ve got one army. If I lose it, that’s the end of story. (Napoleon had sent several armies into Spain to trap him, and lost repeatedly but were replaced).

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:42 pm

      • marsinho May 21, 2018 at 1:49 pm

I can understand that but history will show levy’s hardly followed through and compensated a loss when the likes of berba bale luka and carrick he left us in the swanny ron.

He tried to though and failed. At least he tried.

    • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:44 pm

Underlying this is that if you look at Toby, I think he was bought for 13 million pounds and if likely to sell for 45 million. Conservatively. That’s a solid gain of 30 million plus in that dealing. That’s called trading up.
If we buy de Ligt for 50 million he is likely to be sold in several years time for more than that.

In purely trading terms this is good economics, but doesn’t do much for succession planning or team building. Which is the central discussion with Levy.
Good businessman versus poor Football chairman?

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:50 pm

For me,you buy even aged players only when you are ready to win the league. To be ready to win the league you have to be close. I dont think we are. I think if we buy a few good players and one trendous CM this season we can be ready and the following season buy a couple of short contract seasoned quality players to get over the line

        • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:54 pm

We can’t afford (yet) to hold onto a very good player to the end of their career, as we’ve just seen United do with Carrick. They were happy to retain him and never get reimbursed on his transfer fee.

I can see selling Toby makes financial sense because that is our operating system. We need to keep recycling the money invested in players, we can’t lose it out of the system. Not yet.

          • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:58 pm

To me Poch has to stand firmer against Levy with what he believes. Or admit he is in totally with Levy. That will clear things up

  • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:22 pm

The World Cup is a big big problem.

Poch wants Levy to up his game in transfer dealing, but this is likely not to happen because ideally we need to buy our targets before the World Cup starts and their prices inflate. Whereas we want to sell after precisely because of the same reason.

I can’t see Levy buying before selling. And that means a window of just three and a bit weeks in effect. Basically last minute deals as per usual.

  • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:21 pm

Do you think Poch wants to keep Toby? I mean he is the manager. How bad do you think Poch wants to keep him even if he really does?

    • Wig May 21, 2018 at 1:29 pm

I’m sure Poch would love to keep Toby as a player, but if Toby doesn’t want to be at spurs Poch won’t want disharmony in the squad. Who knows whats going to happen, we might all be surprised if Toby signs a new contract with us

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:30 pm

        This is true too

    • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:30 pm

Good question. There is circumstantial evidence with Wanyama, Rose, and Toby this season and Walker last season, that Pochettino will freeze you out from being a central player very quickly. Whereas loyalty gets you played even if you are not the best. Sissoko, but also Lamela are evidence to that.

So you are either in Poch’s gang, or out in the cold. There is no third way.

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:33 pm

I like that with Poch but I wish he could be a bit more expansive in his thinking

        • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:35 pm

Sackcloth and ashes, if a player comes crawling back and repents will Poch reinstate them? Looks like Danny Rose is trying that.

      • Wig May 21, 2018 at 1:33 pm

That’s a sign of leadership, much like Alex Ferguson wouldn’t suffer any fools

        • gloster1861 May 21, 2018 at 1:37 pm

As I said last night, much easier to freeze out one player if you’ve got two other quality replacements in a big squad like Fergie had in his heyday. It won’t affect the team too much. But Spurs don’t have those luxuries. If we sideline a good player we miss them.

  • Nick May 21, 2018 at 1:15 pm

Toby is as good as gone, just how much & where to.Levy knows a good World Cup & another 10-20m on the price is attainable.Just don’t sell him to Utd.Berbatoss, carrick & sheringham won them trophies while we regressed because of their loss.

Its possible Toby wants to leave

If he feels he has to leave because it’s his final big contract, that’s down to Levy being a cheapskate who won’t pay a market rate.

If Toby wants to leave because he wants to be at a winning club with ambition… That’s also down to Levy being a cheapskate who hasn’t supported Pochettino with enough quality to make us contenders.

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:17 pm

Poch has power. They key is to be respectful but also demand respect. This can be done indirectly but the message has to be sent if the messagee suffers from blocked thinking and a narrow viewpoint.
Poch should test his weight at least, not go cap in hand.
Poch can easily find another job but Levy cannot easily find a manager who would cary on the Poch legacy or dump the system get another kind of manager and still spend.
          Poch has the cards

  • Wig May 21, 2018 at 1:06 pm

United will have probably Β£200M to spend this summer. If Toby has to go this summer then he can either go abroad like Bale and Modric, or otherwise we charge Utd an enormous fee, enough that we could reinvest in both de Ligt and Sessegnon and still have change left over

The Fulham games I’ve seen recently he hasn’t impressed.

Two most likely reasons for Toby wanting to go, imo (now it appears he has been offered more than the basic 124k pw that VVD is on at Liverpool):
    1. anger at levy dragging his feet so long before paying him what he is worth. (Toby said on bbc before the Millwall QF last season that he’d still heard nothing from the club re a new contract)
    2. as Accy says, doesn’t believe Spurs are serious about winning the big prizes. (As evidenced by walker’s sale to the title favs the summer after we finished 2nd, something Toby publicly expressed bafflement at.) If enic compound that impression by selling Toby himself to another direct rival things might really spiral out of control with the remaining big players.

  • Camus May 21, 2018 at 12:38 pm

I think you’re right, H – Toby will probably have a majestic World Cup.

We cannot sell him to United as a solo deal.
It would be simply moronic and prove that Levy is utterly out of touch with his entire fanbase.
Bring Martial the other way, and maybe just maybe there’s a conversation there…
But there would still be a fair bit of ill-feeling that we’re gifting them possibly the PL’s finest centre-back.

I’m also intrigued as to how excited Toby would be at the prospect of playing under the seemingly perenially unpopular Gaffer Mourinho.

I would be happy to sell to united if the player wants to go, if we get in a very good replacement and if the deal with united involves us getting Martial plus 10-15 mill in return. Then I think it improves us and is very good business.

    • Camus May 21, 2018 at 12:40 pm

Martial’s ‘market value’ is in the region of Β£65m according to Transfermarkt.
      Toby’s is Β£40m.
So a deal for Martial + cash is extremely unlikely to materialise.

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:48 pm

Camus you cant go by Transfer Market, its how bad that Mourinho wants him.

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:50 pm

…and if anyone else is interested. For instance Toby would be 10 mil or more going to United than Europe

      • Wig May 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm

If Van Dijk is worth Β£75M then Toby’s value is in that region also

        • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:04 pm

Van Dijk is 26 , Wig

        • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:05 pm

Toby is nowhere near as good either
Toby is a very steady defender. VD is much more and has a huge presence too.He is very proactive in his play

          • Wig May 21, 2018 at 1:21 pm

VVD is indeed younger than Toby (which of course inflates his transfer value). He is also a world class defender but I would also put Toby in that bracket, and certainly above Β£50m rated defenders like Laporte, Luiz etc

            • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:25 pm

I do think VV is better than Toby but Toby is still top notch I also think these days that Verts is better than Toby. If San che got steadier and we got Licht we would be way ahead

              • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:28 pm

                If Sanchez got steadier

  • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:28 pm

Is everyone happy here with Davies?

    • cyril May 21, 2018 at 12:30 pm

      NO

    • Camus May 21, 2018 at 12:30 pm

      As a back-up, yes.
      Not 1st choice.

      • Ahole May 21, 2018 at 12:33 pm

        Agree with Camus

    • cyril May 21, 2018 at 12:32 pm

his crossing is weak. his lack of pace is eveident against good wingers and he frequenty gets caught out of position, often by a simple wall pass where he is left marking space. rose is so much better, not least in the strength of his tackles

      • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:33 pm

I agree and I hope Rose stays and gets fitter

        • Ahole May 21, 2018 at 12:34 pm

          Me too Ronwol

        • cyril May 21, 2018 at 12:59 pm

that said, i wd do a straight up swap for luke shaw. he wd suffer a great deal during a poch pre-season given his current girth but i think he is a very solid defender, tactically as well as physically!

          • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm

So you think Martial+ Shaw is a deal?

  • 89SpursπŸ‘ May 21, 2018 at 12:12 pm

Why sell one of our best defenders? Just pay the going rate for class players.
Get your finger out Levy, before it’s too late.

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:13 pm

Its possible Toby wants to leave

      • Accy May 21, 2018 at 12:14 pm

        he wants to win trophies

        • cyril May 21, 2018 at 12:22 pm

maybe he wants to be sure his family is provided for with his last contract. cannot blame him for that.

  • chrism090861 May 21, 2018 at 12:11 pm

This ‘Toby to Manure’ stuff is making me feel ill !!!

  • Accy May 21, 2018 at 12:09 pm

I’d love to know how many of our targets will be at the WC.

Could mean a lot happens at the end of the window – which is in 3 months’ time

  • Wig May 21, 2018 at 12:09 pm

Would we take Martial in exchange for Toby?

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:10 pm

We need a CM why would we take another forward for a defender?

      • Wig May 21, 2018 at 12:20 pm

I agree with you, but according to press gossip we are interested in Martial. I highly doubt we would sell Toby to Man U unless the price they are offering is huge or if they are offering a decent player in exchange that we are keen on

        • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:23 pm

          Martial,Dele,Eriksen,Son,Kane,Lamela,Moura

          Is that neccessary?

I would maybe sell Son if i could get some decent money and get Martial
but we need to get a top defender and a top CM. This is critical

      • cyril May 21, 2018 at 12:25 pm

well whether we do a deal that involves the two of them or not surely all that matters is that when the window closes we have what we need. given how llorente and jansens worked out we do need a striker albeit one who can play in other spots as well. i like martial, i just think that if toby goes, and it will be his decision, we shd make sure it is not to a competitor. liverpool will look good with him in the team, as wd utd and possibly also city given the age of kompany. no he shd go abroad.

      • Ahole May 21, 2018 at 12:35 pm

Martial is very good, we could buy a CM elsewhere and no doubt we will.

  • SeattleSpursGuy May 21, 2018 at 12:08 pm

Selling Toby to ManU would be the equivalent of Wenger selling them Van Persie; a statement that we aren’t contenders.

  • James147 May 21, 2018 at 12:02 pm

Losing the Tobester will be nearly as sickening as losing Bale, especially if it’s to a rival.

    • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:09 pm

Its reported that City want to buy Hazard for 100 mil
That ticks none of the boxes

      • James147 May 21, 2018 at 12:18 pm

Can’t see Chelsea doing that in a million years. Trouble is, we’ve got recent form of being happy to strengthen rivals in the shape of Kyle Walker.

        • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:20 pm

In the case of Walker. Most of the bloggers here were shocked that they offered 54 million at the time. Im not saying everyone was happy it was probably 50/50 but hindsight is 20/20

          • James147 May 21, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Yep indeed Ron, but the general principle stands. If you’re serious about challenging, you don’t strengthen a rival in any form. I think Arsenal are still feeling the effects of RVP to United in the way they’re perceived. If you’re willing to strengthen a rival, you might might as well unfurl a giant banner over the side of the stadium that says “We’re not challengers. Nothing to see here.” Or words to that effect πŸ™‚

            • Ronwol1960-61πŸ•Žβš½πŸŽ·πŸŽ₯ May 21, 2018 at 12:36 pm

I think we thought with Sanchez we had strengthened and with Aurier probably they felt that he was like for like for Walker (It didnt turn out that way,but Walker wasnt the player he finished up being for a long time either)

              • James147 May 21, 2018 at 1:34 pm

Yes, the form/promise of Sanchez is the one saving grace with the Alderweireld situation. But a back 3 of Alderweireld — Sanchez — Vertonghen would have been awesome. I like us in that shape and that is a strong back line.
