Harry Kane broke the Premier League record for goals in a calendar year with a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 5-2 victory over Southampton.

The England striker hit the net 39 times in 36 top-flight matches in 2017, three goals more than Alan Shearer managed in 42 appearances for Blackburn in 1995.

Here, Press Association Sport assesses Kane’s performance at Wembley.

Role

Kane took up his customary position as Spurs’ central striker, supported by the creativity of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min. He regularly occupied the space between Saints’ central defensive pair of Maya Yoshida and Wesley Hoedt, while occasionally drifting out to the left-hand side, looking to pick up the ball and shoot at goal.

Movement

Kane spent a lot of time on the shoulder of Southampton’s defence, was constantly trying to sniff out an opportunity and came alive in the right areas at the right moments. Former England striker Shearer regularly talks about centre-forwards playing between the lines of the 18-yard box and Kane, despite a few forays to the wings, heeded the advice to devastating effect to ensure a convincing success for Spurs and a torrid Boxing Day for Yoshida and Hoedt.

Goal threat

After poking an early chance into the side-netting, Kane provided the moment the home fans were waiting by using his predatory instinct to nod in Eriksen’s driven free-kick from close range. He claimed another simple finish six minutes before the break, finding space in the box to tap home Son’s centre. Following a thunderous right-foot volley which flew narrowly wide of the left post, Kane completed his second hat-trick in as many games – and sixth in the league this year – with a clever dink over Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Praise

Despite losing his 22-year-old record, Match of the Day pundit Shearer was quick to congratulate Kane and wish him well for the future. “You’ve had a magnificent 2017 @HKane. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in a calendar year. Well done and keep up the good work,” Shearer tweeted. Former Spurs and England striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) was also impressed. “Congratulations to @HKane on breaking the record for most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year. Thoughts are with @alanshearer at this difficult time”.

Overall

Kane admitted in an interview printed in the match day programme that he was “itching” to break Shearer’s record and pre-match opinion around Wembley was that he was almost guaranteed to do so. He took just 22 minutes to achieve his aim, burying his second opportunity of the game with a bullet header. Not one to rest on his laurels, the 24-year-old tapped in another soon after to light up a relatively subdued Wembley before rounding off a fine display and resounding Spurs success with a composed finish.

It could come down to goal difference with the dippers for fourth place.

  • Zara December 26, 2017 at 6:54 pm

4-0 now doubt Swans will come back from this

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:57 pm

This is what I feared. They have improved their goal difference by more than we did. And yet we could and ought to have scored seven or eight and conceded none.

It’ll need to be right at the end. Leave the dippers no time to get another.

  • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:10 pm

A second goal will kill Swansea. Just have to hope they get Everton’s chance right at the end of the game.

  • Zara December 26, 2017 at 6:04 pm

Our Team play today was great, running off the ball lovely, Liverpool are dominating Swansea but relying on flashes of magic from Coutinho, Salam etc not flowing like wot we did against Southampton.

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:08 pm

Wijnaldum seems to be channeling his inner Sissoko.

  • Downgoesfraser December 26, 2017 at 6:02 pm

    Seasons greetings fellow yids
In the past i’m a bit worried when our player is so good over a consistent period of time, so he doesn’t get poached but with Harry Kane I don’t feel this because he has become so good he will be wary too expensive and teams will pass up on him.. Although other factors like Pochettino staying, trophies, Squad getting torn apart, wages..can rock the boat.
but in just transfer terms, Harry Kane may actually be unbuyable right now..

But what do u guys think? Dier & Lloris., especially the latter he is becoming too complacent and He now shows errors in his judgement atleast once a game, Poch has to gradually ease him out especially that captain handband I feel we should give to Alderweireld very soon.,his kicking is suspect and I can’t help but think he wouldn’t have been able to pull out the saves Nick Pope has today..
With Eric Dier, Romeu is just better so are 8 more in the league.. We need to be honest after Wanyama, There is no DMF in the club anymore.

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:07 pm

Lloris seems to have regular lapses of concentration. In addition, his kicking and distribution is untrustworthy. We do need to have someone pushing him for the number one spot.

      • Downgoesfraser December 26, 2017 at 6:14 pm

Yeah it’s starting to disgust me because I could see it some months ago, actually last season against Chelsea, this season against Chelsea in Wembley (alonso’s Goal fucking how did that get in)
Maybe we already do in Gazzaniga.
No one should be untouchable except Kane who will play well and score because he is so hungry for goals.
My untouchables Used to be Toby, Kane, lloris Rose, Wanyama.. I think it’s just Kane now.. I loved watching Romeu and Hjolberg one of them will be an upgrade on Dire.

        • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:17 pm

I’ll welcome Victor back with open arms. He never looked fit in August. A fit player will set us up for the run in.

Belgian team down to 9 men in half hour. These cretinous fucking refs are making betting pointless. Joke.

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:44 pm

Maybe they work for the bookies?

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? December 26, 2017 at 5:46 pm

        They all work for someone.

      • Zara December 26, 2017 at 5:47 pm

I’ve no complaints £10 on HK hat trick at 16/1 and £10 on Quad paying £168, the refs are fine by me and the bookies.

        • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? December 26, 2017 at 5:50 pm

Dunno why I don’t do trebles and quads. Banker today, Leeds, both sheff clubs but I never do it.

          • Zara December 26, 2017 at 5:58 pm

Leeds made very hard work of it, my other 3 romped home, son in law also got his Quad up for £160.

  • Camus December 26, 2017 at 5:34 pm

Afternoon, all. Another cracking win and another super hat-trick from the Boy Wonder. I imagine we’re all squabbling about the fact that some guys didn’t think we’d win today or something, like bickering families over the Monopoly board on Boxing Day. Pass the salt!

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:43 pm

No, bickering over whether Harry was developed by Levy’s Master plan, or if we just lucked out.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? December 26, 2017 at 6:02 pm

Yeah. Poch was what?…..3rd time lucky and Kane was a bolt from the blue. Levy’s plans would be a lot more maligned if Kane hadn’t of exploded. Ali too was never expected to come good as a 1st teamer straight away.

        • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 6:13 pm

And yet there are those who struggle to see this. Alli, has he really been developed over that precocious kid who flicked the ball over the defender and volleyed the ball home before it touched the ground?

          • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? December 26, 2017 at 6:18 pm

If anything he may have blown up too fast. We’ve riden them 2 though, the attacking signings have largely been awful so heavens knows where the last 2years would have seen us without them 2.

  • Dj December 26, 2017 at 5:27 pm

Harry only got a hat trick today!!!

  • Hotspice December 26, 2017 at 5:27 pm

He’s just a one calendar year wonder!

  • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:23 pm

Swansea start with eleven players like the dippers. But apart from that, it’s a long shot.

  • Matt December 26, 2017 at 5:22 pm

    I don’t think it’s 4 into 2 for the CL places, I think it’s 5 into 3. MU aren’t out of reach and they’re not all that.

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:25 pm

Agree with that. Smoke and mirrors from Maureen, when we beat them at Wembley they will be in our sights.

    • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 5:45 pm

But they’ll strengthen in January, spending another 100 million.

  • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:07 pm

Plenty of match balls at chez Kane.

Levy’s a lucky bugger to have Harry around at such an important time for the club. He’s holding the whole shebang together it seems. This is not down to planning on ENIC’s part, it’s pure luck.

    • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 5:08 pm

Cuts both ways, if Enic don’t give him the chance to win things, he’s off.

    • tspurs1 December 26, 2017 at 5:10 pm

We are not a 1 man team , just a brilliant man in the right position, fair play to the team the management and especially Levy for bringing Poch in brilliant forward thinking , onwards and upwards COYS

  • jod December 26, 2017 at 5:06 pm

It does make the point that those who claim we can buy success are living in a fantasy world. We could never have bought a player Like Harry Kane, all the richest clubs in Europe would have outbid us. But because we developed him ourselves he’s giving us something special to remember.

    • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:09 pm

And that is debatable. Kane developed himself, because we’ve not developed anyone else. Do we count Bale?

      • tspurs1 December 26, 2017 at 5:13 pm

Rose , Winks, Walker, Alli , Dier , list goes on all massively developed at Spurs

        • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:15 pm

Good try. I won’t bother to pick that apart, except to say Poch made Rose and Walker.

          • Hotspice December 26, 2017 at 5:17 pm

Don’t let Tim Sherwood hear you say that or there’ll be a razor sharp gilet thrown in your direction. Repent all ye who don’t acknowledge the powers of Worzel.

            • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:29 pm

Dear old Tim. The guy who rejected Suarez.

Old Candle Face sends the future King of Premier League win percentages and Sir Les to Holland, scouting one of the best attacking talents on the planet…what could possibly go wrong? It’s more likely they were scouting his agent, who they found either to be different to Crouch, Defoe, Kranjcar, and Kaboul or a severe allergy to manilla envelopes.

        • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 5:15 pm

I’d call that doing their job, for which the coaching staff are well paid.

    • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 5:10 pm

What chance do we have of finding another home bred player as good, none I’d say, he’s a once in a generation player.

      • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:12 pm

        Correct.

I remember the lonely non-iPhone/social media/streaming days of listening to games on my Walman’s built in radio. I’d hear “Ready Steady Teddy” through those uncomfortable foam headphones with what seemed like ridiculous regularity…but to think Harry’s going to pass his scoring record having played 100 less games…WOW!

    • baz December 26, 2017 at 5:02 pm

The radio, and we were happy with it.

First player in Premier League history to hit back to back hat-tricks more than once. He also now has more Premier League hat-tricks than Wayne Rooney who’s has a ten year head start…something tells me Harry’s going to be breaking a lot more records!

    • baz December 26, 2017 at 5:03 pm

      The man is a machine.

    • big toe December 26, 2017 at 5:06 pm

Just reading there’s been 12 hat tricks in the prem this season, Kanes scored 6 of them, that’s some effort.

      • Hotspice December 26, 2017 at 5:08 pm

The closest any other Premier League player came to scoring 6 hat-tricks in 2017…was a bunch of players scoring just one. ONE! He scored 5 more hat-tricks than any of the other “World Class” strikers in the Prem this season.

      • 61SpursNut🌰 December 26, 2017 at 5:22 pm

You’re reading the wrong reports then. Kane’s scored two hat tricks in the PL this season and one in the CL.

        • Hotspice December 26, 2017 at 5:25 pm

Think he just meant in 2017.

Harry has 6 trebles and then it’s one a piece for Aguero, King, Morata, Wilson, Rooney & Lukaku. That’s mind blowing!

  • Sid Trotter December 26, 2017 at 4:49 pm

Yup, Kaneinho is certainly world class – and without him we would look mid table if Dele and Tin Tin etc were not on their best form. For me, what I find incredible is his consistency. Week in week out – uness in August of course – he will score. How do we clone him, how do we keep the ‘bigger’ clubs at bay. Yes, he has no intention of leaving, but it’s often down to accountants and agents rather than the player. But truly remarkable. Well done Kane, I raise a glass in your honour

    • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 5:07 pm

Being absolutely realistic, I don’t think Harry will be here for more than one more season, especially if Levy is still here, with the chance to earn three or four times his present wage, and the chance to win trophies he’ll leave with a heavy heart for sure, and I won’t blame him. Records are lovely but medals and cups are better. I’d say Shearer would swap records for his Premier League title.

      • gloster1861 December 26, 2017 at 5:13 pm

And Levy will be happy to cash in. Secretly, of course. The usual guff about not wanting to sell. And plenty of mugs who believe that.

  • Jim,Newry Spur. December 26, 2017 at 4:44 pm

    Well done H.
