That Life of Brian sketch with Cleese hollering ‘Oh yes he is. I should know, I’ve followed a few!’ must surely have had some footings in the world of football.

‘At 2-0 up everything was perfect, then at 2-2 the judgements changed quickly… we’re not interested in those voices. We’re going to London to qualify for the next round… best wishes to all those who really want the best for Juventus.’

Not my words, but those of the living legend that Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain thinks he is.

Look mate, ‘those voices’ are the ones that pay your wages. Two nil and you flipped it up!

I firmly believe that last night has damaged Juventus.

Spurs weren’t perfect last night, and that was the how deep the roots of the problem went. It was an utterly imperfect Spurs that pulled the Italian’s undergarments down in their own back yard.

Higuain will have more to worry about than ‘armchair critics’ when Juve land in London come March.

The spectre of Spurs will peer over the Old Lady’s shoulders for some time to come.

More please.

I must say it’s remarkable how Rose hasn’t been missed at all.
What a story that was last August/September.
    Headlines everywhere.
It’s all gone quiet over there…

Davies was a bit iffy the other night but all credit to him and Poch in general for getting on with the job. I’ve barely thought about Rose in months.

Never a problem area when reflecting on the mid/late 60s we had 2 steady solid full backs in Messrs Kinnear and Knowles respectively when I don’t recall any rotation then, just sayin!!!!

Well he shouldn’t have listened to the voices in his head when he took the 2nd penalty. Clearly they weren’t all in agreement about where he should put it.

  • LOL-1175 February 15, 2018 at 10:15 am

Does anyone else think that playing at Wembley has benefitted the players in these big matches? I mean after having to play in Europe’s largest (I think) stadium every other week, suddenly running out at Dortmund, Real Madrid and Juventus may not be as intimidating. Just a thought…….

    • Killycoogan Spur February 15, 2018 at 10:17 am

Another good call I think- you are on a roll this morning!!!

  • DAVID February 15, 2018 at 10:05 am

Funny how when being drawn in 2 CL groups of death we won them but when we had what looked like an easy draw we flopped spectacularly.

  • gloster1861 February 15, 2018 at 10:01 am

We’ve already faced Real Madrid and Juventus away and been the better team both times. They were last year’s finalists. The players should be proud.

  • LOL-1175 February 15, 2018 at 9:53 am

Ok this is a bit left field and will certainly be controversial but please don’t shoot me down right away as I have given it a lot of thought and there is some method in my madness!! With regards to our right back problem how about we try Sissoko there…..I know what you are thinking but hear me out. He has played there for us before- I think for our 6-1 win at Leicester last season and actually did ok. He also played in a right wingback role for France at Euro ‘16 and played ‘well’ which earned his transfer to Spurs. Regarding attributes he has more pace than Aurier, has a better football brain that Aurier ( although that’s nothing to brag about), has better positional sense, does stay on his feet rather than lunging in and can carry the ball with pace- admittedly with limited direction. Also if he is playing right back it means he cannot be used in the more important advanced positions where he gets shown up. After all, if Valencia and Young can morph into fullbacks at Man U anything is possible…..it may be his true calling. Your thoughts????

    • gloster1861 February 15, 2018 at 9:57 am

Of all the positions on the pitch, right back or wing back might be his least worst. He is big, powerful, can run and can block and tackle. I’ve not seen much of him fouling or going to ground, so it could be a possibility.

    • David Dillenberg February 15, 2018 at 9:58 am

Agreed, yes converting Sissy to a FB makes sense when I recall mentioning the same in dispatches a while ago.

    • DAVID February 15, 2018 at 9:59 am

He can’t tackle ,accident waiting to happen. Same applies to Lamela and Son, keep them well away from our penalty area.

      • gloster1861 February 15, 2018 at 10:02 am

I’ve seen him tackle cleanly. I don’t recall him conceding free kicks.

      • LOL-1175 February 15, 2018 at 10:02 am

        Worse that Aurier???……really???

        • DAVID February 15, 2018 at 10:07 am

He’s clumsy, terrible ball control ,awful touch and you want to play him in a key defensive position?
I believe Poch played him there once, once was obviously enough.

          • LOL-1175 February 15, 2018 at 10:10 am

It’s all comparative- he is being assessed against Aurier. The bar is set low….

            • DAVID February 15, 2018 at 10:29 am

As I said, Poch played him there once, the fact he prefers to play Aurier or Trippier there now should tell you something.

    • Killycoogan Spur February 15, 2018 at 10:08 am

Good call- I hadn’t thought of that. Certainly would be an upgrade on Aurier. Toby or Sissy and right back for me in a 4-2-3-1

    • SpurAndy 🍒π February 15, 2018 at 10:20 am

Can he cross the ball? Has he even tried to cross the ball? Can he cross it and put a curve on it? Even if he could put up a defensive display he’ll need to be able to do that to some degree to fit into Pochs plans as a back.

  • East Stand February 15, 2018 at 9:21 am

Despite the fake news circulating regarding Toby, I’m sure we would be far happier if he put pen to paper sooner rather than later. Perhaps talks were put on hold until he’d got back to full fitness and to make sure the injury isn’t reoccurring?

    • David Dillenberg February 15, 2018 at 9:51 am

As Toby contract negotiations have seemingly stalled why is it fake news???

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/feb/14/tottenham-hotspur-delight-champions-league-juventus

An article that had the effect of encouraging me to try to enjoy what’s happening at the Club on the pitch at the moment. Yes, we’ve nothing tangible to show for it yet in the form of silverware. Yes, it could all fall apart if players, and the manager, decide they want more money or a ‘guarantee’ of success elsewhere.

But…..but…..we’ve just had an unbelievably successful month against our nearest rivals. We’ve played some fantastic football. We’ve come back from adversity in some games. In others, we’ve simply steamrollered supposedly superior opposition (in terms of spending power, for sure).

Right now, it feels great to be Spurs.

    • SpurAndy 🍒π February 15, 2018 at 8:20 am

Yep good article. There’s only 4 games in a season when you can win something ie PL, CL, Carabao and FACup. The other games are just part of the journey. Not normally in to these sort of quotes and I know it won’t work for some but worth pondering nonetheless.

  • MiT February 15, 2018 at 5:02 am

Once a player puts on that shirt, he’s nothing but lilywhite.

Am I naive for believing that very few fans give any players a harder or easier time based on something so trivial as skin colour ?

Nilly/Taff – ‘colour’ was just for you. Doesn’t come naturally, but I remembered. 😉

    • MiT February 15, 2018 at 5:07 am

Aurier made a couple of tremendously poor decisions, and he had an off game with his ball control as well – but he’s a physical beast, and he can put the ball in the middle with either foot quite well. He’ll come around.

Davies seems not quite as technically gifted as some, but his strength is in applying what he learns as he goes. He is now a far superior player to the Davies that first came in from Swansea. Great attitude also.

I have absolutely no complaints with Sanchez. He was thrown straight into the fire, and has done fine. Still a new player in relative terms, and getting starts against the biggest of CL foes. Of course he’ll have some nerves, but the guy has really blended in well.

      • OrganicPaper February 15, 2018 at 8:26 am

I am glad MIT has more faith in Aurier than I do because ye of little faith in a defender who added to our long list of bad buys ain’t no good and should be offloaded in the summer me thinks!

          • David Dillenberg February 15, 2018 at 8:53 am

Then I did say the same thing about Lamela and he improved so perhaps there is hope after all but not so sure with Aurier who is distinctly iffy!

  • Gus February 15, 2018 at 4:24 am

Wembley will be a boiling cauldron of white and blue. It will be Juve’s graveyard because we won’t give them a two goal start this time

    • David Dillenberg February 15, 2018 at 8:49 am

Gus Juve are no mugs. You dont get to CL finals in the past 3 years for nothing. Although we are in the driving seat IMO the tie is still evenly poised could go either way.

  • AntSpurs February 15, 2018 at 1:24 am

    Dembele stats v Juve:
The 30-year-old had a total of 116 touches in the game, completing 95% of his 99 passes, winning all four of his tackles and finishing 86% of his seven dribbles.

Does this mean a pass doesn’t count as a touch ? otherwise his touches are pretty much first time passes, which is not possible of course.

      • AntSpurs February 15, 2018 at 2:39 am

I’d say it’s mainly down to the positional requirements of Poch as he has a good shot on him. If he breaks in and around the box where he can also be dangerous, he’s out of position of the shot is blocked or loses possession. He is so good at the other stuff, I suppose we don’t need that from him. We have enough atackers he can pass over that responsibility and keep us covered in case it gets turned around .

  • East Stand February 14, 2018 at 11:07 pm

There’s no way Davies’ challenge was comperable to Aurier’s.

Davies also does not have a track record in three seasons at the club of rash challenges or a red card that Aurier has earned himself already. This is despite him only joining the club in the summer and sharing the position with Trippier in that short period.

I hope Aurier comes good but his highlights reel before he joined rang alarm bells and some saw it coming. The fact that he wears stupid clothes and hates gays has nothing to do with it.

He’s a liability and the Welsh bloke on the opposite flank just so happens not to be quite so much.

Criticism of Aurier is racist? This sounds more like OJ’s defense team than rational analysis…

    • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 11:12 pm

As far as I’m aware Aurier said that that ibra and the coach were up each other’s bums. Much the same as lots of people say who aren’t homophobic. Did he imply or say anything else ?

      • East Stand February 14, 2018 at 11:17 pm

Don’t care, can you imagine any player in the Premiership saying that about their manager and a player?

He might not be a homophobe, despite the homophobic slur on his boss and colleague.

I just want him to stop being a loony on the pitch…

        • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 11:17 pm

          Oh ok that’s different

        • StuSpur February 14, 2018 at 11:19 pm

Totally agree. I’m sure every one of us wants Aurier to be a success but so far he has looked a liability. He was woeful against Juve and those that are bashing upon his critics are clutching at some very desperate straws

          • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 11:24 pm

Like calling him a homophobe you mean. Criticise him for his play if you want.

                  • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 11:56 pm

                  • JackDLad February 14, 2018 at 11:59 pm

There you have it. I for one want Aurier to succeed with us. I feel that there is something special about him. Yes, he did not have a good game last night but there were many games when Bonzo did not do well and see the player he turned out to be. Give Poch a chance with him, if he does not get it together he will be gone!

                    • AntSpurs February 15, 2018 at 12:06 am

Best right back in France – love it. Seems very humble to me but not afraid to speak his mind. He’s a very decent player much the same as Sanchez. For me his strengths outweigh his rush of blood moments, but he seems level headed enough to listen and learn from his mistakes. Could be a major part in a legendary back line for Spurs.

                    • JackDLad February 15, 2018 at 12:14 am

I feel, that given a season in the PL and a good pre-season, he will settle in nicely. People have to remember that he is only in the door the same as Sanchez. France and Holland respectively are not the PL! Aurier and Sanchez are learning the ropes. They are learning new tactics and probably becoming fitter than they have ever been under Poch. If Aurier steps out of line, I am confident that Poch will give him a headbutt, as Poch so kindly put it LOL!

                    • AntSpurs February 15, 2018 at 12:31 am

Agreed. I reckon Poch would take those comments on the chin (no pun intended) Aurier might get nutted but all in a good cause.

                    • East Stand February 15, 2018 at 9:04 am

This has nothing to do with ‘picking on’ Aurier, his work rate is really good and his attitude is good but he has seemed like a foul, penalty, red card waiting to happen since the arrived.

Nobody accuses anyone else of being racist for saying NoCluedo, Clinton Cards weren’t good enough. Wanyama is firm favourite with the fans but he’s black, how can that be?? Dier’s had some pretty harsh criticism on here from everyone this season, oh wait, no race card to play?

Straw clutching of the highest order from Aurier’s fan boys I’m afraid, cut out the stupid challenges and we’ll even forgive you for being a Gooner Serge…

Its all about Ronaldos power and resolve Im sorry to say

  • Mad Carew February 14, 2018 at 9:28 pm

    Ronaldo 2-1 83 mins

  • Accy February 14, 2018 at 9:22 pm

If Madrid and PSG ends 1-1 does that mean we could potentially beat Madrid 3-1 at home?

    I think so.

    • Accy February 14, 2018 at 9:29 pm

      *PSG 3-1 at home

    • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 10:11 pm

Does this mean we should coast PSG at home 6-2 ? This should be on a maths paper. Question 1. If Spurs beat Madrid 3-1 and Madrid beat PSG 3-1, what will be the score line when Spurs play PSG ?

      • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 10:15 pm

Seeing that they lost 3-1 as opposed to our 1-1 draw, I would argue a 4-0 to Spurs as being the correct answer.

        • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 10:20 pm

Providing we don’t give them a 2-0 headstart

        • MiT February 15, 2018 at 4:54 am

It doesn’t work that way. All about how one squad’s method of play and plan matches up to the other.

          • MiT February 15, 2018 at 4:54 am

But I like your scoreline. 🙂

  • SeattleSpursGuy February 14, 2018 at 9:22 pm

Matt Law in the Telegraph: “Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offer Mauricio Pochettino a lucrative new contract to lead the club into their £850 million stadium as reward for his impressive work that has attracted a number of suitors.”

    • Jim,Newry Spur. February 14, 2018 at 9:26 pm

Haven’t much choice have they? Same will apply to the players, time to pay up for Daniel is fast approaching.

  • IrishSpurs February 14, 2018 at 8:57 pm

As i said last night i won my accum £900 – couldnt take a drink last night – was raging as spurs had done us proud and won the money – left the office today early – had a drimk 😅 we had a couple of scares and we need a couple of players back but i dont think there isnt a spurs supporter who wudnt have taken that result

  • Ronwol196061 February 14, 2018 at 8:48 pm

Would love to see Ryan Mason as a coach and a manager later

    • SeattleSpursGuy February 14, 2018 at 8:53 pm

Why? Mason seems a decent sort and has had a dreadful professional misfortune, but we know zip about his abilities in coaching. We don’t even know if he wants to do such a thing.

      • Willie! February 14, 2018 at 8:57 pm

With you on that one, even great players often make terrible coaches. And Mason was a championship level player if we’re being honest. I hope life works out well for the lad, but have seen nothing to indicate he’s suited for, or desires, a career in coaching.

        • Jim,Newry Spur. February 14, 2018 at 9:24 pm

Old RedNose played for Aberdeen, Rangers never set the world on fire, Bobby Charlton Johnny Giles, great players rubbish managers. Mourinho brilliant player!!!.

          • Accy February 14, 2018 at 9:35 pm

I think it would be a good move for him tempered with the argument ‘why should he be any more successful than Gus Poyet for example?’

      • Freund or Foe February 14, 2018 at 9:08 pm

He’s already said he wants to.

        • SeattleSpursGuy February 14, 2018 at 9:41 pm

To be clear, I’m not saying he shouldn’t have the opportunity to get into coaching. If that’s what he wants, terrific, and if Spurs want to help him, great. I’m just reserving judgment on what kind of a coach he would make. I’ve seen a few overly emotional types on Twitter who are ready to make him Poch’s right hand man. It’s nuts.

          • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 14, 2018 at 9:46 pm

            I never judged him

          • MysteriousStranger February 14, 2018 at 10:23 pm

On the basis Poch was quoted waxing lyrical about Mason’s amazing football brain, and saying he would be successful in football outside of the pitch I’d like to think that counts for something. I too would like to see him have success as a coach or manager, because he was a loyal and talented player, whose playing career unfortunately came to an early end.

            • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 10:38 pm

Defo. There’s plenty of great coaches who haven’t played the game professionally. Mason was a pretty decent player to boot 👍🏻

            • Harry Hotspur February 15, 2018 at 9:46 am

May as well hope he becomes the next prime minister. If he hadn’t worn the shirt a few times and been likeable we’d all be stepping over him in the street.

          • Harry Hotspur February 14, 2018 at 10:58 pm

So let’s get this straight-you’re saying another brain damaged appointment at Spurs would be one too many??!

            • Rich G🙄 February 15, 2018 at 9:18 am

Wtf are you on about you mad cunt?

    • Ronwol196061 February 14, 2018 at 9:38 pm

I like to see him do well in the game thats all
Fuck he is a decent bloke

      • MysteriousStranger February 14, 2018 at 10:23 pm

        Yep.

      • 61SpursNut🌰 February 14, 2018 at 10:40 pm

This is not a difficult concept to grasp.

        • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 10:54 pm

Does anyone remember who the poster was on here a while back who hitched a ride to the game with Mason’s family?

          • MysteriousStranger February 14, 2018 at 11:44 pm

I recall the post for sure.

    • Ronwol196061 February 14, 2018 at 9:40 pm

Woukd any if you not want to see him do well as a coach or a manager ffs???????

    • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? February 14, 2018 at 9:47 pm

Mason to replace Poch when he fooks off to Madrid.✊

    • Harry Hotspur February 14, 2018 at 11:00 pm

Ron, take your brain to the bathroom love, its full…

  • Lord Croker February 14, 2018 at 8:37 pm

At least he’s not infected by a bald patch.

  • Willie! February 14, 2018 at 8:24 pm

Higgy Schween gonna learn the hard way at Wembley, when Wanyama crunches him into little bits of dust.

  • DAVID February 14, 2018 at 7:47 pm

    Real Madrid vs PSG. Crackerjack.

  • spursa February 14, 2018 at 6:42 pm

Hey guys here is an article by Barney Ronay which shows that the tabloids can get things right occasionally:
    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/feb/14/tottenham-hotspur-delight-champions-league-juventus

  • melcyid February 14, 2018 at 6:14 pm

is that usual for a ref to only add 2 mins extra time

    • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 6:42 pm

Not sure but both teams made 3 subs each in the second half. My understanding is that an extra 30 secs should be added per sub. That’s at least 3 mins.

      • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 7:07 pm

Also a goal and 3 bookings which should also be taken into account so at least 4 mins. Probably wanted to get his arse out of there in case he had a big decision to make against Juve. It was on the cards.

        • melcyid February 14, 2018 at 7:56 pm

I seem to remember the gerry officiating another game and making big decisions against us but I cant think which game it was now.

        • melcyid February 14, 2018 at 7:59 pm

more like not giving us enough time to score the winner as we were mullering them.

          • AntSpurs February 14, 2018 at 8:34 pm

Yep, that too. Don’t think he fancied awarding us the winner. Those Juve lot would have lost the plot.

  • caveman February 14, 2018 at 5:56 pm

We’ll fuck them up the ass at Wembers.

    • Harry Hotspur February 14, 2018 at 6:07 pm

      And in the FACE!

      • caveman February 14, 2018 at 6:13 pm

        Bunch of luvvies

  • Andrew February 14, 2018 at 4:51 pm

    Ryan Mason

  • Andrew February 14, 2018 at 4:50 pm

I was so pissed off with the way we froze for the first ten minutes, so typical spurs, absolute wank.
But I honestly said to my son that we could get back in this game, just don’t make any more fuck ups and we could get something. I just felt that if we could get our game together we could cause them problems.
Serge i hope will come good, but he needs games and needs to compose himself. Sanchez is still young, could do with toby coming in along side him and verts .
This tie is far from over, and I hope the officials are not biased against us at Wembley, it is after all one of the usual cl clubs and refs don’t like upsetting the apple cart.
Was very proud of the way we got back into the game, juve were shocked.
Also I would love for Ryon mason to join our coaching staff.

  • TriniSpurs February 14, 2018 at 4:37 pm

When Sanchez and Aurier play , Dire is surprisingly the 3rd shittiest player in our team.

    • Horndog 🇺🇸 February 14, 2018 at 8:08 pm

Who’s Dire? We have a Dier. You appear to be a shitty speller.

  • Chris Cyprus Yid February 14, 2018 at 4:24 pm

non me ne frega un cazzo Gonzalo Higuain …COYS… Bring it on at Wembley

  • Freund or Foe February 14, 2018 at 4:03 pm

Belle parole non pascon i gatti.

    • Harry Hotspur February 14, 2018 at 4:12 pm

‘Is that wiv or wivaht chips?’

      • Freund or Foe February 14, 2018 at 4:16 pm

        G’won then, gissa large portion.

        • Harry Hotspur February 14, 2018 at 4:21 pm

          Fill er ‘up

  • BARD February 14, 2018 at 4:02 pm

I think they were in shock at our sheer relentlessness at the final whistle. Not counting any chickens yet though because if Dybala and Cuadrado are back for the return they will be a different prospect.

  • richspurs February 14, 2018 at 3:55 pm

Foistest luvs Harry. Appy valentines day

  • DaveK February 14, 2018 at 3:55 pm

In the spirit of your blog Harry, I thought Sissoko played well. Great result after gifting them 3 iron-clad chances of which said Higuain only took two.
