Ahhhhhhhgh Toby meltdown everybody …run for your lives!

In recent weeks, Poch said: “There’s nothing to relate [the two players]. Today, I was talking for one hour with Toby. He is so happy here.”

Those words are accurate and true.

Stijn Francis (an advisor of Toby Alderweireld) has been quoted as saying: “When you look at Toby’s statistics, they are impressive. Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.

“Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him. There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can. But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”

Those words are those of a bloke who had in his own mind, already spent his commission and had the mother of all Christmases.

As per numerous updates courtesy of Gladys, there is zero rush on all this. There’s 3 years remaining on the boy’s contract with an discretionary option of another year as things sit today.

THFC will offer Toby a better deal.

Stijn Francis can crush all the grapes and jump off all the doll’s houses he can clamber atop of, but Levy & Poch will make the offer when it suits them, and not some advisor.

  • OrganicPaper September 4, 2017 at 12:21 pm

Poch is magic, we all know that. But his turd polishing skills only work with players who are willing to work bloody hard and have the baseline talent that is required. With Toby and Rose they had it, poch got the best out of them. No way we should undo that great work and let Toby leave for the sake of parity on wages with Kane.

  • Harry Hotspur September 4, 2017 at 12:13 pm

    mattspurs

Credit to Levy really for tying them all down to such long contracts.

Toby has gone from being a rightback who managed 12 games in a season at Athletico, to a utility man at Southampton (albeit a pretty decent one) to a first name on the team sheet centre back at Spurs. As with Rose, Maestro Pochettino has made a player reach a whole new level.

This is salient point. Poch has made Toby the player he is. It would be pretty snide to suggest Alderweireld would have blossomed anyway.

    • Hartley September 4, 2017 at 12:15 pm

Which is the reason why losing any player whilst Poch is at the helm is no major issue.

      • East Stand September 4, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Kane can go, get Edwards in the first eleven and hey presto Poch creates a replacement Golden Boot winner. Simples!

    • Willie! September 4, 2017 at 3:10 pm

“Poch has made Toby the player he is.”
Laughable assertion. He was clearly the top talent in his position at his age in the league before we plucked him, a regular in his national team playing out of position (one of the top 10 national teams), the idea that Poch “made” Toby is outright comedy.

      • mattspurs September 4, 2017 at 4:25 pm

Toby didn’t even play centre back regularly before coming to Spurs.
Toby was a right back internationally or a reserve right back at Athletico.
At Southampton he played centre back, right back and defensive mid.

From day one Poch has installed him as a centre back and it’s now what’s laughable is to think of him playing anywhere else.

    • mattspurs September 4, 2017 at 4:21 pm

I think that’s one of the things Poch does. He coaches a real understanding of what a player is required to do in a certain position – I’m not sure if it’s simplifying things or being utterly meticulous. The other thing is understanding how your play impacts others in the team and how you have to cover for others too.

I’m pretty sure that Abramovic or some people on the board at Chavs base a degree of their transfer policy on trying to stop Spurs improving their team.

Poch told Conte to be more respectful and shut the fuck up about who we sign. Perhaps the penny has dropped for Conte because I can’t see Barley the kind of player Conte would have wanted.

Perhaps Conte now realises what dysfunctional bunch of twats he’s employed by?

When I saw that was in the Sun it was always going to be framed in the most sensationalist way. I agree, we need to hold our horses on this.

Just because two overrated fullbacks have been obsessed with grabbing the opportunity for more money before anyone notices that they aren’t actually that brilliant or going to get any better doesn’t mean we should start shitting ourselves over Toby.

He’s worth 10 Kyle Walkers, which begs the question, how far is Levy prepared to go to keep him once talks begin?

  • WitTank September 4, 2017 at 11:33 am

Thought I read somewhere Levy was going to revisit the wage structure at Spurs?

    • caveman September 4, 2017 at 11:37 am

I read where it is policy, when the window shuts, to renew contracts. That would make sense. So expect Toby to sign an extended contract and get a pay increase to bring him in line with Lloris and Kane.

      • East Stand September 4, 2017 at 11:53 am

You would hope so and I’m sure he will be offered that. Walker was never going to get the ind of contract from spurs that Tobes will be offered.

Aussie, you can throw as many facts about N.Korea behaving badly as you like but you are missing my point. Of course the communist states are aggressive towards the West, we know that but if you look back over history both sides have been active in raising tensions.

Do you honestly believe that the West has behaved impeccably when it has intervened to try and shape the world in it’s own vision?

You seem to have blind faith in Western governments and their complete justification in doing exactly what they like in the name of ‘democracy’. That’s up to you, I take a more sceptical stance.

That does not make me some kind of Commie lover, you just have to acknowledge that responsibilities have to be taken for mistakes and repeated involvement in these things rather than them walking away blameless.

Is learning from one’s mistake suddenly banned?
