Levy Time: Where Time And The Siggy Deal Stands Still

Levy Time: Where Time And The Siggy Deal Stands Still

Unsurprisingly word from the Tea Lady with the mostest is that the Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson to Everton story is not science fiction.

Personal terms have been agreed between Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and the player and only days ago Glad told us that the transfer was being finalised.

Had any normal human being been negotiating for us, Siggy could have been holding up the shirt by now.

But no. Levy’s idea of finalising a deal is to deconstruct it and look to see how he can really p*ss off the other party. To which end a financially flush Everton have offered Swansea City precisely what they want, including – better payment terms – which to those of you in the cheap seats means that they get the money quicker.

Siggy is apparently pragmatic about the whole business. He is no stranger to the way Spurs do business.

Levy time: where time and deals stand still.

All sounds a bit like a merrygoround.
Everton want Siggy, we want Siggy if we can’t get Barkley, Barkley’s price surely has to come down if they do get Siggy. We don’t need Siggy and Barkley. We need to offload Sissoko. We need Lamela to be fit again.
Not sure which order things need to pan out.

  • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 10, 2017 at 10:20 am

Its a real art taking care of a club that ain’t the elite sky 4. Make as much cash as possible by selling star players, rinsing fans for ticket prices and TV money whilst making sure you don’t threaten those elite teams. If we start to do that, the foot comes off the gas. Happens to us, happened to villa, Everton…as a said, its a real plate spinner. I can feel the foot coming off that peddle as we speak. Trouble is….YOU CANT COAST UP HILL.

  • JuandeInternational July 10, 2017 at 10:16 am

What I question is if the crazy level of deal brokering is a genuine effort to save the business money, or an ego thing? If it’s the later, then it could be argued that you have a chairman whose actions are detrimental to the success of the company, but then as it’s a private business he pretty much has a free hand to do as he pleases.

    • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 10:22 am

and that’s why I love him . He doesn’t do it pretty but he does it

    • AccringtonSpurs July 10, 2017 at 10:23 am

I believe all Daniel’s decisions are business decsions. Very rarely are they footballing decisions. Van Der Vaart may have been a footballing decision, but then he was £8m – bargain. Son seemed to be a footballing decision until you realise his signing had the purpose of increasing the fanbase in Asia. Nkoudou – business decision as he was bought hoping his value would increase. And so on.

Sissoko – footballing decision? As in, everyone panic, we’ve left the team short? Certainly can’t have been a business decision.

      • mattspurs July 10, 2017 at 10:30 am

I’m struggling to work out where we would accommodate signings other than by improving our bench (Siggy fits the bill). Wimmer/Janssen/Sissoko simply weren’t up to filling in when needed last season – they’ll either be given more time or replaced. If Walker leaves we’ll need cover for Trippier or use KWP. Just can’t see a marquee signing as being anything other than a PR boost.

        • AccringtonSpurs July 10, 2017 at 10:33 am

no need to struggle with that thought. If anything happens it will happen to the bench and the youth.

          • AccringtonSpurs July 10, 2017 at 10:34 am

            (Walker aside)

          • mattspurs July 10, 2017 at 10:45 am

I guess the struggle is trying to understand people panicking about the lack of signings? Our squad is very well balanced. We maybe need one ‘extra’ player and the slackers to shape up or ship out. I think Wimmer and Janssen will come good but think it’s pointless keeping Sissoko.

      • JuandeInternational July 10, 2017 at 10:36 am

So apply that to the Lopez deal, which is down at the £5m level. Attempting to restructure that deal is going to do little to impact funds/cash flow and yet he goes back on an agreed deal to save a seemingly trivial sum of money in the grand scheme of things. Is that myopic penny pinching or just to come out on top in a negotiation? His reputation for being a royal pain in the arse to deal with hasn’t come about because every other single club has misunderstood his approach. If the fundamental dynamics of a market have changed and you refuse to accept this, then you risk doing lasting damage to your business.

there’s no doubt poch would of had targets before the window opened, and if the bald wanker keeps up with this stale draconian tactic of pissing off other clubs during negotiations then out time with poch could be over soon then we may like to think! every fucking season!!

in terms of this Siggy situation, for me would be good competition for erkisen, and would add qulaity to the depth of the squad, and barkley ….well i guess well take him given the way things feel at the moment but im pretty fucking disappointed we haven’t aimed a bit higher this window, unless they have something up the sleeves we dont know about!

  • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 9:36 am

Bit baffled by the complete lack of talking from Barkleys camp, no agent stories , no bids from other clubs , no statements from Barkley. This all points to the kids mind being made up and a deal being agreed for months somewhere. Is that with us? Who knows

  • Devonshirespur July 10, 2017 at 9:32 am

My take on it is that we want Barkley, but would take Siggy. Buying both would be unnecessary especially with the likes of Winks developing quite nicely (or is Siggy cover for Eriksen and Barkley for Alli?)

Everton are asking too much for Barkley, a player who wants out and has 1 yr left on his deal, and in this instance only time will force them to lower their price. We”ll wait for that to happen and if it doesnt then we’ll go for a more realistically priced Siggy.

Expect this on to run and run, and not all down to Levy sitting on his hands (for once). No one can blame him for not valuing Barkely at £50m. Possible flip side is that Swansea are unwilling sellers of Siggy, there will come a time late in the window if Barkely aint done that Swnas will decide its either too late to sell Siggy or that they will see us a being desperate and the price will go up.

My instinct says we’ll get Barkley, close to deadline day for about £30m

    • Al July 10, 2017 at 9:34 am

I agree. Our sad chairman will consider it all worth it and good business if this ends with us getting Barkley for 25 mil while they take Klaasen and Siggy. Sadly what seems more likely is Everton take both and tell us to get fucked/Barkley takes 100k and stays to fight for his place. We end up with egg on face and cock in hand, as per usual.

    • Camus July 10, 2017 at 9:38 am

We’d never buy both. Not a chance. My take is that Everton will wrap the Siggy deal up sharpish, possibly this week. They’re not fackin’ about. No one is waiting all summer to see what Billy Big Bollocks at Tottenham is going to do. Koeman clearly wants all players in early. Barkley may happen for us but I can see Levy f*cking that one up too. We have a history of getting sub-par versions of our original targets. Poch wanted Zaha last summer. Did we get him…?

    • Harry Hotspur July 10, 2017 at 9:56 am

The strategy about a month ago – was precisely that. Siggy was the safety net if Barkley went wrong.

My understanding is that Swansea will sell, but quite rightly aren’t prepared to hand over one of their best players for ‘some beans’.

Levy plays every deal as if it is HE that is doing the seller a favour.

Everton by contrast have cash on the hip and are ready to spend.

      • Devonshirespur July 10, 2017 at 2:11 pm

I’m all for being prudent and getting a good deal. £30m for Barkley and £20m on someone else all on deadline day is much better than just Barkely for £50m now IMO.

My issue with the way we do deals is that we seem to misjudge the market at the start of the window and by the end become desperate. eg. Mane went for £32m last summer, quite early on. Seemed a lot, but by September it looked like good value and has proved so ever since. We ended up with Sisokko for not much less.

We seem to be constantly surprised how much clubs are asking for their players, but being one of the toughest sellers in the market, why is this? Levy should be expected to be played at his own game…its almost a badge of honour for some of the more egotistical chairman to get one over “the toughest negotiator in the league”

The money is there now. We must be +£100m up on the previous years’ revenues. Fuck it ! lets just spend it.

  • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 9:29 am

I think there’s more in this than just levy being a nob. I genuinely believe we are after Barkley and siggy is just being touted to piss off the toffees . It will all play itself out in the end ,Barkley to Spurs for 20+ extras and siggy to everton for 35 mil

  • Camus July 10, 2017 at 9:28 am

Guy’s a fackin’ prick. The master of blowing a deal in the final stages. Siggy would be a perfect fit for us right now. Poch cannot be impressed if Siggy turns up at Goodison Park.

    • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 9:32 am

Poch had over a month to stop siggy leaving in the first place, he doesn’t seem the sort of person to change his opinion on players. Is siggy pochs first choice? I doubt it!

      • Camus July 10, 2017 at 9:40 am

He openly said he was a great player and that he regretted him leaving but that it was all agreed when he arrived. Supposing Barkley is our no.1 target, there are zero guarantees we will get him with Levy in charge of negotiations.

        • MysteriousStranger July 10, 2017 at 9:53 am

It wasn’t all agreed when Poch arrived, Poch had been at the club for nearly three months. “The club” agreed to sell him, and “he agreed to the move”. The decision was partly due to Davies/Vorm coming the other way also. Poch the saw Siggy “develop as a player” after we’d sold him.

Poch wanted to address other squad weaknesses and was happy enough at the time to consider Siggy expendable. But it was widely reported that Siggy wasn’t initially keen to leave and wanted to fight for his place. He was sold anyway.

poch has openly confirmed they regret siggy leaving, look it up mate.

        • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 9:48 am

Ok so he regretted him leaving, not surprising when your left with mason, bentaleb,Njie, and the likes of those to depend on. Point is does he now feel he is the player we need to move forward or are there more promising, younger players out there?

        • Harry Hotspur July 10, 2017 at 9:57 am

He also said that the deal was done by the time he took over.

          • John Flynn July 10, 2017 at 9:59 am

Have you not always said a levy done deal isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on??

We have literally no cover for Eriksen. The midfielder who covered the most ground in the permier league last season and made us tick.

We can’t expect us to do well on all fronts if we fail to sign someone because ‘they’ll be on the bench’. How we could have done with Siggy last Aug / Sept / Oct when Eriksen hadnt got out of first gear.

We need to win trophies and we need strength in depth to do that otherwise we just end up prioritising one, miss out and thus miss out on everything.

    This.

    • mattspurs July 10, 2017 at 10:49 am

      Exactly ‘cover for Eriksen’
= a player who will mostly be on the bench but can come on for Alli, Eriksen, Son, Lamela seamlessly or cover when he is rested.
      = not Sissoko

  • Matty k July 10, 2017 at 9:16 am

Fake news… Leak a lil Facebook story, get column inches for free – be associated with one of THE massive brands in the world, one that is part of many people’s daily lives – and then simply deny the story- job done. Create an inflated perception of Spurs’ attractiveness, greatness, further increase awareness of our existence? Just cheap marketing I reckon.

  • Harry Hotspur July 10, 2017 at 9:12 am

Good grief, Spurs fans who think Siggy is beneath us.

    • Dan Bramley July 10, 2017 at 11:27 am

Also can’t understand people saying they’d prefer a younger option? He’s only 27, he will now be in the peak of his career, if we want to win things now we need to have players like that, not 22-23 year olds with very minimal league experience.

I’m all for going for youth but we need a mix of youth and experience, not Jon Walters type experience but decent heads that have possibly been in successful sides and know what it takes to win things/cope with the PL.

Otherwise we’ll all just sit here moaning about N’Koudou type players saying “yea but he’s young though.”

Agreed Siggy not the player we need. Good player, but not necessary with what we have. What we need is some pace and skill on both wings, ability to cross accurately and cut in and go wide as the situation calls for. Keep oppo defences occupied and peed back to thwart counter attacks. Two more like Rose and and a faster Trippier-type please. Not potential like some of the kids we have, but experience.

  • Pj July 10, 2017 at 8:44 am

For all of Everton’s signings, not one would get into our first 11.
We are a little light squad wise but we have to make way for new players which means the ones MP wants to sell need to go first or we could be lumbered with them.

  • crespur July 10, 2017 at 8:37 am

He’d be back on the bench again. Forget it, his Spurs time has gone. Spurs starting 1st 11 will be the same as last season with perhaps a Bonzo shaped player missing. Regardless of who may come in, they’re going to have to sit and await their turn, much like Lloris and co had to do. Most of the other top half squads will start with mostly and unchanged starting 11 from last season unless of course they have bought a player like Lukaku or similar. After reading about the possible targets that may arrive I can’t see anyone of them pushing out the incumbents unless there is an injury. “Everton can have him”.

    • Devonshirespur July 10, 2017 at 8:41 am

Or Everton are playing games because they know we really want Barkley.

    • Devonshirespur July 10, 2017 at 9:21 am

More likely we’re the ones playing games as EFC will know that we have a back up option if they dont get more realistic with the value of their player with one year left on his contract.

Thing with Barkely is that he hasnt had such a stellar season that people will be queuing up to spend 10s of millions on him (like say Sanchez). He has 1 year left, was pretty average last season, so even in this crazy market only a desperate club would spend more than 30m on him, and its only that high because he is still young.

We’ll get one of Siggy or Barkley and these do appear to be our top targets, and i’d be happy with either. Cant decide which i’d prefer. Out the box quality in Siggy with a great attitude….or still yet unrealised potential of Barkley who could become a way better player than Siggy could ever dream of.

  • richspurs July 10, 2017 at 8:36 am

    • mattspurs July 10, 2017 at 10:40 am

We don’t play with pacy widemen, our system relies on skilful players moving intelligently often playing inverted. Siggy could step in for Eriksen or Alli (or Son/Lamela) pretty seamlessly. Sissoko who plays as a right footed right winger has been an unmitigated disaster Lennon was binned. N’Koudou might just have half a season left (if he’s lucky). Barkley is interesting as if he can learn to keep possession better he could become Dembele’s heir as well as offering coverage in attacking positions.
