You can’t stop a good leak.

A former colleague of mine once recounted an occasion, when returning from a particularly popular and indeed choice place, called the Tartan House in Frating (near Colchester in Essex). It involved a group of intoxicated boys and girls driving home on a winter’s eve, when one girl announced she simply had to go.

The car pulled over on the motorway and the mademoiselle made her ungainly way out the vehicle; still dizzy from her disco exploits, her heels clipperty clopped out into the black night.

Only to reappear some 30 feet or so more or less in front of the car, presumably finding the dipped light of the head lamp a blessing.

Once adjusted and squatted; a silhouette gave off billowing steam, that circled into the night air. The response from the occupants of the car ranged from disbelief to laughter. The girl dipped once more into the dark, to emerge from the same angle she had set off.

Unsteadily she returned to the motor, only to say “I couldn’t see nuffin’ out there. Nearly fell over. But I found a bit with a light on.”

And so to Adebayor. Who simply had to go.

Don’t get me wrong, he brought his ideas and I told him: ‘Your ideas will not help the team’. I have had a chance to play for a lot of top clubs in my career and I know how it’s supposed to be.

I told him one v one and he didn’t want to listen, and then I told him in front of the group. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe it was a good one, maybe it was a bad one. I don’t know, but I spoke my mind.”

So now we know what went on. At least we now know a version of what went on, that Ade is happy with, as an account of events.

He did the right thing. He led an insurrection. Strong men do this. Leaders of men do this.

It’s all very well characters like Patrick Barclay saying, “Any manager who doesn’t fall out with Adebayor is a rare bird indeed”, but was Barclay there? I suggest he was not!

Adebayor will only flourish under Tim, and rightly so. They have much in common.

When Tim was at Norwich in the early 90s, he failed to turn up for a pre-season friendly against Romanian side Otelul Galati. He was fined and suspended. And sold to Blackburn.

Under Roy Hodgson, the mildest man in football, Tim had “issues” again. It was alleged that Tim had been a pivotal figure in undermining the now England boss. Here’s Roy:

Up until that time, Tim had done a very good job in captaining the team and was also very supportive to myself and the other players. He became very disenchanted. Being such an important character in the club, his discontent was able to spread to a lot of other players. I only want players who are totally committed.”

In a subsequent interview, Tim joked that he “didn’t want to take all the credit” for Hodgson’s sacking.

Then there was Hoddle. Tim didn’t get on with Hoddle. There have been mumblings about Tim leaking stories to the press at the time. Glenda said Tim had “an axe to grind.”

And you have to wonder how come all the red tops were linking Sherwood with at least half a dozen clubs, yet nobody managed to secure his signature. Until he was eventually snapped up…by Coventry City in the Championship. He survived a season there.

A silhouette gave off billowing steam, that circled into the night air.
