Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino have both declared that Tottenham want to play the best teams the Champions League has to offer.

Spurs go into the last 16 draw in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday at 11am BST having topped their group with 16 points, the most amassed by any side in this season’s group stage.

They finished above Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund to be seeded for the draw at UEFA’s headquarters.

But there are still some potentially difficult ties for Tottenham, who collected their first Premier League win in five games with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Stoke on Saturday.

Bayern Munich, Juventus, Sevilla, Porto, Basel and Shakhtar Donetsk are the teams who can be drawn with Spurs and Kane, whose brace against Stoke takes him on to 50 goals for the calendar year, wants to beat the best.

“When we have been in the group we have been in with Real Madrid and Dortmund and we have done as well as we have, I know people say it a lot that we don’t fear anyone, but to go far in the Champions League you are going to have to play the best teams in Europe so we will see who we get,” he said.

Pochettino, too, has stressed that playing against one of the bigger opponents will be seen by everyone at Tottenham as an opportunity to impress and improve.

“I’m so brave and like to play against the big teams. I love to play against Real Madrid, the big teams, of course. I love the challenge and to challenge the best as I’m a winner. I prefer to play against a big team.

It’s a big test for us to play against big teams. You can see the game against Real Madrid I prefer to play against a team that will motivate everyone rather than a team all people say you will beat easily, then it gets complicated. We love to play against a big team and we always give that little bit extra which you need.”

Tottenham are joined in the draw by fellow Premier League sides Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool as England becomes the first nation to have five sides in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Paris St Germain, Roma, Barcelona, Besiktas, and holders Real Madrid make up the rest of the teams in the first knockout round.

Seeing a lot of frustration regarding Poch recently. Understandably!

My question though… say Sprs finished in the 5th/6th spots this season and next, whilst dealing with Wembley and adjusting to the new place. Would you stick by Poch or throw him to the curb?

Just to prove that i’m as sad as the rest of you, live cam 3 or 4 behind the south stand there is the next large bit of steel on the floor waiting to be craned into place.
Juve is a winnable tie, but we must get an away goal as it will be very tight.

Our fullbacks will be key against Juve. We have Davies (slow), Tripps (can he defend?), Aurier (Liability).

If they play with wingers they have threats in Douglas Costa, Cuadrado, Bernardesci.

If they play 433, they have Mandzukic, Higuain and Dybala…

It’sgoing to be interesting. I’d set up with Aurier and Rose and hope for the best.

    • gloster1861 December 11, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Got to beat the best to win the silverware. We’ll have Toby and hopefully Wanyama back and that is critical.

It was pleasing to see the fraud JK Rowling get some stick last week for this Johnny Depp casting business. She’s had it all her own way for too long, being held up as some kind of modern-day truth-speaker heroine.

I thought she just wrote books. I’ve obviously not been paying attention. What she done?

      • Camus December 11, 2017 at 12:59 pm

Backed Depp being cast in an adaptation of another one of her poor books.
Amber Heard made allegations about his behaviour when filing for divorce. Sections of Rowling’s fanbase aren’t impressed with her backing him.

        • gloster1861 December 11, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Just because she efficiently plagiarised Ursula Le Guin and other authors as she cobbled together her ‘books’, doesn’t mean she is either an intellectual or a good person. Quite the opposite.

Being positive and having talent go well together. Its not everything though. You need to believe. Believing has moved mountains. Its fine to believe occasionally ut you need to believe more that just occasionally if youw ant to win something that has at least 10 events linked to it like the CL Cup. Nursing your wounds everytime a referee makes a bad decision or you lose a bad one…you still have to believe. You see this in players that do.You see it always in Kanes eyes, but you can wait to see if the defence is parked before you believe, you have to think that silly fucking wall of players is doable. The Vikings believed in their Gods and they took over Europe. Thats how much Tottenham must believe. Think Wembley,Lasagna,Clatternberg …its all bullshit.Believe is Belief. Its the only way

Seems to me you need a reality check mr Hotspur. Citi’s owner earns $400 million a day, it is unreasonable to think that Spurs are competing on a level playing field with the likes of chelsea and Man city, they have effectively bottomless wallets. Levy is trying to get us up there in terms of income with the likes of the Scousers, the Mancs and the arse. we all like to win tin, however I pay for my season ticket to be entertained. Last year was the best home season in my life, and I’m no spring chicken. I’d settle for that every year, we were extraordinary from Xmas onwards, unfortunately chelski without the CL commitments were almost equal.

Are your really that dim, PSG and Naymer… Heard that West Brom matched the bid but Naymer preferd Paris to Birmingham. Shameless stolen after a 1 min internet search “Manchester City and Manchester United lead the way in terms of gross spent in last 5 years. City have spent a staggering €690 million on new transfers since 2012-13 season while Manchester United are also right up there with €680.75 million spent on player transfers in last 5 years. Man City city has actually spent over £1 billion in transfer fee since 2008. Which force other title challengers to spend more to keep up the pace at top of the table.

Out of the current 20 clubs in the league only Swansea City has a positive net spend if we count their last 5 season transfer dealings. Welsh club has spent around €153 million in last 5 years and they sold around €159 worth of talent taking their net spend to positive 6m. Southampton and Tottenham are the other two clubs who pretty much canceled out their spending with their sales. We take a look at top Premier League clubs spending pattern and their net spend.”

  • Gus December 11, 2017 at 10:38 am

We are actually better suited to playing euro teams as currently constructed. I’d be more concerned facing one of the english teams at the moment because we seem to struggle against anyone except the last game vs the bindippers. Good to show a bit of confidence well earned by topping the group and toppling the defending champs in the process.

Of course he has won the respect of many observers

For giving us a really competitive team playing attractive football.
For developing and encouraging some young English players.
For starting to build a squad and some rotational ability
For learning a foreign language under pressure
For starting a long road out of Spursy
For gaining admiration of many observers
    Etc
But of course for those sad individuals who measure their life in baubles it will never be enough. They go on finding new targets for their frustration , owners, players, managers, sometime fans and various authorities, when all they need is a decent wank.
