Ignore The Ankle Hysteria

By The Boy -

This morning’s Metro sees the free rag up to it’s usual standard, with some poor sap who isn’t prepared to put his actual name to a piece heralding the ned of Spurs’ season.

What grates – beyond the fact that a scan has even yet take place at time of writing – is that the the piece goes on to allege that Kane has an ongoing ankle problem.

‘Kane has missed 16 Spurs games due to ankle problems since 2016 and his potential absence would be exacerbated by Son’s departure for the Asian Cup.’

Er… 16?

I count 6 (six) occasions.

The real issue here is that the truth is a bit dull. All twisted or swollen ankles need for the swelling to go down before providing useful x rays.

Then, the routine is rest, ice, inactivity and usually the joints heals itself.

Only if there has has been a violent tearing of the tissue would there be a genuine cause for concern – and judging by Harry departure from the pitch at Wembley on Sunday, that seems unlikely.

Spurs have coped just fine without Kane and despite the absence of Son, there’s little evidence to suggest this brief lay-off will be any different.

Thank God this unfortunate injury happened during a transfer window when our follically-challenged supremo can actually sign reinforcements. Over to you Daniel… right, the silence is deafening.

The man needs game time too. Throwing him on with a few minutes to go when all the wide players are leggy and tired isn’t helping him. He has less than an hour game time in the PL this season with something like 8 mins average.
His strength isnt gong to be goal output its the hold up and muscle we need to exploit.

I know Llorente is no HK substitute. My point is if we start shuffling defenders into midfield, giving attacking mids new roles etc.. then we are IMO more likely to crumble defensively than if we put some trust in Fernando to hold the ball up and let the likes of Dele and Moura feed off him

I understand but he’s playing for a European club with a European timetable. Having disappeared once, I think it’s taking the… michael… to go again. Spurs should have given him the option of one or the other. Twice in one season is ridiculous. It could amount to what, 10 or so games missed.

Yeah I agree, strangely we actually look more fluid without Kane sometimes. I seem to remember Lamela playing through the middle on occasion and it worked quite well. Son is a big miss though, especially in Harry’s absence.

Llorente has not scored mainly because we expect him to play like Kane. In the FA cup against the likes of Tranmere that is ok, in the EPL he needs service, he can put the ball in the net, but needs to be given the ball in the box, preferably head height.

Recent history of Kane being out has lead to us playing more expansive ,fluid play up up and we have looked good , Son being gone will change that.
I am a little worried ,why havent we got a young eager striker that is willing to play second fiddle to Kane ? Other clubs lose strikers and just replace them ,simple.I know the answer= Levy.
Our midfield is down to dreggs and sooner or later its going to come back to bite us this season, with Chelsea and Dortmund coming up am i a little apprehensive ,,yes.
On Son swanning off for a second time ‘Baz’ a regular on here says it is the Asian equivalent of the European cup so very important to all their players.

For us to cope it will mean a total system change. Playing with an attacking gang. 3 at the back a pass master sitting in front and the rest do all the attacking. Can be done.

Coping without Kane and Son will be a nightmare, our alternatives are not good enough to be like for like, so we need to play in a way we have never played. I can see Parratt getting a few bench appearances.

Fernando makes Bobby soldier look prolific. I agree we’ve coped well enough without HK but Son was always the lynchpin to that plan, without him i just don’t see it happening. This could well be the kerplunk moment.

It does say 16 games…so over 6 occasions that could easily be 16 games, but a striker with the commitment levels of Kane, 16 games in over 2 seasons is not that bad. I would be shocked if its that many though, 25% of our games seems very high for a 1 man team.

Seen we may loan Malcolm…not the worst idea in the world. Not a great player at the moment, but has been decent and a decent shout.

Well said H. The constant narrative in football journalism/punditry is that if Kane picks up an injury, Spurs are fooked. Well we’ve always managed to win games without him before, albeit with Sonny still hanging around the place.

Speaking of which, I think it’s shocking that he’s disappearing for the second time in a single season. Spurs accommodated him for the first gig, which got him out of national service, which is great. But to disappear for a second time mid-season is frankly poor. It’s not like he’s not well compensated for his time.

simply because swapping a world class striker with excellent link up play for a lump that can head the ball means we need to adjust how we play. for lorente to score he needs to be facing goal, getting balls into the box for him. Or he needs to be a target man with runners off him. There is no like for like replacement for Kane so you need to adjust to play to the strengths of the players you have. The issue is then compounded by it not being just Kane out. We are short almost an entire midfield, and Son. The attacking team is likely to be a mix of Lorente/Moura/Eriksen/Alli. From that we need to create holes for alli to operate in, we need crosses for Lorente, time on the ball for Eriksen and Moura needs to be against a championship side. Kane offers the ability to create space and time for Son/alli/Eriksen. the other options do not. I would say we need Trip to focus on balls in the box so potentially consider not playing him as full back.

Llorente has scored a total of ZERO goals for us in over 20 appearances as a sub in the EPL. The implications of that are staggering. Imagine a keeper that utterly failed to do his job in any of his last 20 appearances.

And this is the solution?

Interesting. I would probably consider Jan in midfield, Sanchez and Toby at the back. Moura on the left, Trips up on the right and Lorente in the box. to be fair, with our injury list, what ever format is invented it will not be natural.

The chat about our midfielders being injured ,i think of Dembele and Wanyama .Quite bad that i have completely forgotten about Dier ,says how bad he has been for 18 months . As it goes we could very much do with a refreshed Dier back and on game.

We have to utilize Llorente and he needs service so Rose and Ericsson can provide that. Alli has guile plus height so should be supporting Llorente. Lamela is a booking liability so should be used from the bench. Not sure if Sanchez has ever played as a holding midfielder but could screen Jan and Toby. If we are solid at the back, we have the ability to attack from many angles but will involve throwing in the odd high ball…………forget style for the moment…….we just have to outscore the opposition!

Im not sure I understand why so many seem to think we need a complete overhaul of shape and system because HK is out.
Its not good news but we do not need to compound things by playing others out of position or introducing new shapes and systems.

Just stick Llorente up top and get Dele / Lucas a bit tighter to him and keep on going as we were – nothing needs reinventing.
