I Had Lunch With A Contractor

By The Boy -

This isn’t an explosive blockbuster of a blog primarily in order to preserve anonymity; but hopefully still provides some insight.

The company involved play a significant part in the New Destination despite the apparent size of the contract the owner was pretty sallow about matters.

I was told that Levy himself and other were extremely personable and that the Club itself gives a good first impression.

This was then directly countered with a rather blunt confession that, given the opportunity to repeat the whole process, it would be politely declined and a tender would never have been submitted

Which was somewhat of a Django Unchained moment.

We are talking about a contract value that looks like a telephone number.

The issues are not complex.

Sure they are if you drill down into the minutia of endless diarised events, et al whilst describing how to conducted business in quicksand.

It became very evident, very quickly, that this poor person sounded an awful lot like they had tried to sell Spurs a footballer.

The Levyologists were incredibly quick in absolving Levy from all responsibility with the catch all excuse of, ‘all big projects overrun’.

We’ve dismissed this cobblers on numerous occasions.

Yes projects overrun, but not typically by what is essentially 40% of the anticipated time frame.

Nor do projects typically cost several hundred million more than estimated.

Nor do projects blow their contingency monies so fast – or was the decision to dilute the Nike deal and then mortgage it to the banks to raise more cash a just a coincidence that it occurred when the project was months past its opening date?

The contractor told me that initial discussions went well and all appeared well.

However there then began an endless cycle of going over the same aspects, again and again and again.

The tedium really set in as every item discussed then (in the mind of the club) had direct impact upon the ongoing discount/overall cost.

The contractor guessed it was a ‘divide and conquer’ tactic, reassessing the overall cost after every component part was added, but assured me that this didn’t effect the final pricing, it just demoralised everyone at the company.

I was told it was quite common for clients to be ‘new’ to numerous aspects of projects, but the swagger (for want of a less offensive word) displayed was bewildering.

This was further compounded by the involvement of equally unqualified ‘relatives’.

Whilst senior contacts at the club remained constant, on a day to day basis it was a revolving door of faces, organised chaos.

This contractor’s staff had never seen a working environment like it.

I was told it felt very much as if all the problems the project had encountered were self inflicted due to straightforward incompetence.

I can only assume the “good business sense” is the chasing to re-coup as much as possible opposed to the sense it took to get us in the state in the first place. Think of it like over spending on redecorating your house by £50k then returning a lampshade.

I had to laugh reading this because it perfectly encapsulates my own experiences when corporate accountants try to micro manage complex projects in areas where they have zero technical experience. They start off by being affable and apparently willing to listen but gradually begin picking at the estimates for individual project components with the objective of grinding down the will to resist of technical folks who are more interested in getting the job done. Eventually the technical folks give up and accept a lower number in the vain hope the SOBs will go away. As I have said before on this blog estimating is often as much of an art as it is a science and by squeezing out pennies from one place it is likely you are really just taking away contingency pennies that you will end up needing someplace else. I know this doesn’t seem to make sense but ask anyone who has actually managed large projects and they will tell you how difficult it is to come up with entirely accurate estimates for individual components because there are so many unknowns but if you base each number on past experience and the best information available the project gods will probably smile on you and bad surprises in one place will be offset by good ones elsewhere. However, if you cave in to the barrage of downward pressure from accountants the chances are you will just end up with bad surprises. As for the “swagger” they bring to the table it is amazing how a corporate accountant will turn into an arrogant bastard who knows everything within six months of coming into an area completely new to them. They wouldn’t for one moment think that a project manager could successfully run a company’s accounts with only six months experience but think it entirely feasible that they themselves could take over development of an atomic power station in the same period.

Burton 0 v Citeh 1 (Aguero) Citeh 10 v 0 (aggregate)

All it takes is about £160m of talent to combine to get the breakthrough! Kevin de
Bruyne plays a sensational pass from the halfway line into the run of Riyad Mahrez, he stands up his man on the right wing and plays it back to Sergio Aguero inside the area, he just passes it first time across goal and into the back of the net.

I’m not sure we on here are in a minority, however once the punters start going to the new toilet in the next season(and it won’t be before)I suspect all these problems and the debt will soon be forgotten. And I don’t doubt that Levy is banking on people general short termism.
He has so much to answer for,but I don’t think he will be held to account by anyone.I predict that the NFL sales will overtake those of the football club and the said club will be sold on.We can only hope that any new owners want a club that can win trophies and are prepared to back it with sufficient funds, not debt.

I know what you mean…that said, I have never seen a project over run by 40% and over budget by 100% without being moth balled. I was running a project a little while ago that was under budget by 2yrs late (6month project) but that was because the customer basically couldn’t afford it that years budget, so rather than formally bench it, wanted weekly updates.

Materials in a build of this level only represent about 50% of the costs, or less. Then the “fixed” costs depends on where you source. If you sourced offshore the dip in the £ raises costs. (doing this the years of Brexit is mad…). I agree though that the cost will be for the full complex, not the football ground. My worry will be that ENIC will push the burden of debt on THFC and the ownership of the non-footballing structures will be retained elsewhere enabling them to keep them post sale. Also to divert funds away from the football.

Hmmm… sounds like good business sense to chase every pound when a project has over-run by millions- why is he/you surprised?

Good business sense.

Good grief. If you can’t contribute anything intelligent, kindly **** off to Spurs Community or some other commune.

WHAT GOOD BUSINESS SENSE????????

Have you any idea how much debt we are in?
Have you any idea how much money THFC loses every time we play at Wembley.
This fiasco could not, I repeat could not have been handled worse, IF Daniel had set fire to one million pounds in cash before a spade was put in the ground.

The project probably has gone way over budget but not by the amounts they are talking about. These rumours will help them when they put it up for sale in the near future though. Its only a small part of the project but our company lost the steel contract to supply Morrisroe, the price for this was fixed for the duration. Most of the other materials would have been as well as nobody likes taking a risk nowdays.

This is incoherent garbage.

Much like the farce that is Brexit, I have a growing fatigue of the stadium debacle. Like Briext, I just wish the whole bloody thing had never been conceived. Even if I wanted them in the beginning, the process has been such a cluster fkuk of incompetence and self serving hubris I couldn’t careless now.

And Im ‘just’ a punter. I genuinely do feel for anyone forced to work in any proximity to Levy, not least on a massively high profile project such as this.

The Levy affect has even been blamed for a labour shortage that caused delays to cross rail when Baldy started handing out premier league wages to any sparky or fitter within a 50 mile radius of N17. Cretin.

Only Me
Only Me

Sounds like a large build being run like a home extension. People taking the minutia to heart rather than practicality. For me, the involvement of the Levy family would have had me walking away. I did a project very early on in my career where the CEO’s wife started to get involved (so similar to this), but was about IT. She started making crazy demands, like location of certain kit in the server room based on aesthetic appeal rather than practicality. In the end I had to speak directly to my boss and the customers CEO to point out all the risks of following her guidance (not just the breach of health and safety on some ideas). I ended up writing some huge risk letter (about 20 pages) to caveat my company to safety. In the end she backed off, but my working relationship with the CEO an customer dropped so far I ended up moving off before completion. Since then, if that ever happened I would nip in the bud on day one before the spouse felt she was a “valuable part” of the process.
