For the first time ever I apologise for the headline. I just made the mistake of spending 5 minutes looking at other sites’ headlines and now my head hurts. Imagine the size of headache that the owners of football clubs must suffer at this time of year.

Ross Barkley has not travelled with Everton’s squad to their second pre-season training camp in the Netherlands because of a groin problem.

Groin problems are like that old note from your mum sketch – excusing you from swimming or rugby or whatever, because you’ve got an ear infection. No matter how hard the PE teacher stares at your mother’s handwriting or at your ear, you’re home free.

Is really Barkley injured? If he is, then he is one of a very elite group of players who are genuinely injured at this time of year.

The second snippet is as mentioned previously. Sigurdsson has pulled out of Swansea’s pre-season trip to the USA claiming he was not in the right frame of mind to feature; and free spending Everton are thought to be eager to complete a deal for the 27-year-old as soon as possible.

So.

Coincidence?

I’d like us to strengthen, but I think some of you chaps need to stop being Sky Sports suckers regarding transfers, and what will happen if we don’t throw money around the place. Manure spent 150mil odd last season, that’s without Zlatan’s signing on fee and wages, and it gained them 3 points on the previous season. In the 3 seasons since the ManC’s last won the title, they have spent 437mil on incoming players. 437mil, excluding this summer. Where has it got them? The media want us to go crazy over transfers, it sells their stories and TV subscriptions. It does not necessarily equate to improvement.

Sell Dier for 60 mill and buy Kovacic for 40 mill…

I would agree with that deal
As much as I like Dier I think our defense is covered and . Wanyama can do the job and we can find another cheaper back up
If we can get 30 mil for Dembele
I would sell him instead and buy Kovacic for 40mil

    • ronwol196061🇨🇦 July 18, 2017 at 11:19 am

      • caveman July 18, 2017 at 11:26 am

Letting Walker go to Man C wasn’t a bad move for Spurs as it didn’t dramatically improve their defence, because they had to goodish right backs last season. Hoever allowing Dier to go to Man U would solve a big problem for them and strengthen them in midfield (this after them getting 12 years out of Carrick from us). I would tell them to fuck right off which is what Mr Leeches has done.

    • Caspurs♿️ July 18, 2017 at 11:16 am

      Wot no more magnificent 7’s?!
In all seriousness I believe like any club player recruitment is an important aspect of moving the club forward, to stand still in football more often than not, results in going backwards compared to other teams. Does this mean we should go crazy and simply spend ridiculous amounts of money? No.
I do want to see us sign players, but unlike some who think we should only be looking to improve the bench, I believe we should aim to sign players who are on a par with the quality of the first team, and who can provide quality options from the bench when needed.
It isn’t a case of spending exorbitant sums of money, I believe it’s more a case of being clever in the market place, and finding the right players who can actually help us achieve our goal (winning things).
The last two transfer windows hi light how being overly penny thrift actually cost’s the club money, Clinton, Sissoko, N’Cluedo and possibly Janssen. These players may well represent a loss for the club (Clinton already has) in time, whereas possibly paying that little bit more for players who are genuine prospects i.e. Tielemens, Ousmane Dembele, and others, makes better business/sporting sense than opting for the greater gamble of signing players who are unheard of (how’s that policy working out for us?).
      Ooh, I fancy a jam doughnut now…

      • Freund or Foe July 18, 2017 at 11:39 am

I don’t mean to spoil your doughnut Cas, but I can’t agree with you. “To stand still in football more often than not, results in going backwards compared to other teams”. Well, according to net spend, we are pretty much the only club to be standing still. Yet we are the only club that has moved forward compared to other teams.
It’s so easy to highlight unsuccessful buys. Check out every other PL club’s transfers over the past few seasons and try to tell me that anyone else hasn’t had as many failures, in most cases quite a few more.
Dele, Dier, Tobes, Wanyama, Son, Trippier. Can any other club compare to this over the past few seasons, in terms of transfers that have improved their team?
Dembele and Tielemans. 2 names that haven’t proved a thing. Could be amazing, could be just as much of a flop as our N’buys. I’m afraid that your reasoning is flawed, but that’s just my opinion.

        • Harry Hotspur July 18, 2017 at 11:45 am

That makes complete sense – until you look at what those that have spent have won.

Cas, have my jam, there’s loads left in my jar.

          • Freund or Foe July 18, 2017 at 11:48 am

That’s correct. ManC’s have spent 437mil over the past 3 seasons, and won a league cup.

I’m sure CFC and MUFC also spent what might be describe as immoral amounts, they both won more than one cup in the same period.

Failure to win after spending simply does not equate to spending being a bad thing. It simply equates to spending unwisely.

              • Freund or Foe July 18, 2017 at 12:21 pm

                This where I got mine-

                https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-city/alletransfers/verein/281

Of course I agree, spending isn’t a bad thing, I do want us to strengthen. And yes, Manure probably wouldn’t have got their pots last season if it wasn’t for their spending. I was just trying to highlight that stupid spending doesn’t equate to improvement. It’s more important to get the right players, as we have done since Poch arrived more so than we haven’t. What I think is even more blatantly obvious is that the manager is more important than exuberant spending. Poch has proved that with us, as did Conte last season.

                • Harry Hotspur July 18, 2017 at 12:29 pm

But Conte spent a comparative fortune! All their signings were £39,999,99 and 99p.

        • 💋 July 18, 2017 at 11:47 am

And mine. Which side has stood still and gone backwards? What evidence is there to substantiate this maxim? How is it that buying players is the only way some will recognise ‘moving forward’?

Liverpool were runners up a couple of seasons ago. They have gone backwards. Was it because they stood still, bearing in mind that not buying players is standing still?

          My name’s 💋 and I’m a flat earther.

    • Harry Hotspur July 18, 2017 at 11:20 am

Wheeling out the ‘money don’t bring you happiness line’ is sadly a waste of everyone’s time and as irritating as opting to ‘forget’ about FFP.

Spending WISELY is the key and so it is in all aspects of human life.

This isn’t a complicated matter at all.

Take the £30.5million that Levy is seeking to lift off of Haringey Council for example. This could be paid for by ENIC and without breaching the FFP.

But no, ENIC are – so the Flat Earth Fairies keep telling us – not able to simply throw money at the project.

Big clubs, well run clubs do.

Instead we take 6 months not to buy some mediocre c*nt because of a few pennies – whilst seeking to divert public funds from a social housing budget.

I’m beginning to hope this stadium collapses into a sinkhole.

Kovacic would be a spectacular signing for us. 2 potential partly financial problems 1) Levy is never going to pay this guy’s going rate (£40-£50m? This transfer window is crazy money). 2) His wages would probably break our wage structure by a long way.

Fulham secured the future of their teenage prodigy Ryan Sessegnon

However the likelihood is that the player has received assurances he will be able to move on next summer if the offers are there and Fulham do not gain promotion to the Premier League, although there is no buy-out clause in his contract.

      Can’t get the fans, mate.

  • Camus July 17, 2017 at 10:25 pm

It was interesting that when we sold Walker to that key top 4 rival of ours Man City, a host of journos and ex-players like Graham Roberts were super-quick to assure the fans that it was Poch’s decision and certainly not Levy’s. We then saw some articles saying that “Spurs are wary of spending as they don’t want to repeat previous transfer market mistakes…”

It’s possible you’re being played, and probably Poch too.

  • Camus July 17, 2017 at 10:20 pm

You just know it’s a shite window for us when we are waiting on Ross Fackin Barkley and some 19-yr old kid from Argentina. People are saying that £85million has come in from player sales and yet we are heading to the States on Wednesday with a weaker roster than last season. There was a line from Levy that the stadium wouldn’t affect transfers; I’m waiting for the line about that £85million…

    • marsinho July 17, 2017 at 10:25 pm

we had an 18 year old kid once, i believe by the name of bale who in 1st 18 matches was deemed my most as shit, that’s until he threw it back into our faces and the rest we all know.

      • Camus July 17, 2017 at 10:28 pm

Thanks for that, dude. He was seen as a top prospect when he joined though, wasn’t he? Just took some time to settle in (probably because he lacked bollocks at the time). Who is shouting that Barkley is a top prospect? We seem to be the only club in for him. Interesting that Leicester and Everton would both rather splash £50mill and over £100k per week on Siggy than have him.

        • Sexy Beast July 17, 2017 at 10:33 pm

If the Poochmiester wants him and therefore sees potential that the likes of you and me haven’t noticed, then that is more then good enough for me!

          • Camus July 17, 2017 at 10:39 pm

Yes, we hope. He couldn’t do much with Janssen (who he went to watch) nor Sissoko last season. We hope Barkley will prove more productive, if he joins.

        • marsinho July 17, 2017 at 10:35 pm

i was referring to that 19 year old argy who does in fairness from what i’ve seen and heard of from others who’ve scouted a good prospect …….as for barkley and not my cuppa tea either may yet turn out as the next bentley i fear.

          • Camus July 17, 2017 at 10:37 pm

Ok, fair enough. I just would’ve expected the team that finished 3rd and 2nd in the league the last 2 seasons, and has £85mill to spend from player sales alone, to have a bit more ambition.

            • marsinho July 17, 2017 at 10:41 pm

we all know who poch wants and for a meagre 30mill that fella would be kovacic but as with levy it’s any old excuse, wages.

            • marsinho July 17, 2017 at 10:46 pm

and frankly that 85mill should cover kovacic’s wages and still enough to other targets in too with dosh to spare.

    • East Stand July 17, 2017 at 10:42 pm

I agree generaly with your sentiments Camus but it is still fairly early in the window.

We have to accept that Levy will only outbid or beat rivals to signings if they are rivals that finish 7th or below and don’t have a monkeys arse’s chance of beating us to a player we want.

Therefore it doesn’t make any difference when we do business as the players we are interested in are players that nobody else significant wants…

  • Lilywhite without the II July 17, 2017 at 9:29 pm

    Willie!
It’s amusing to see Everton paint themselves into a corner. They put what, a 50M price on Barkley, publicly? So Swans say, “yeah, well if that lump is worth 50M, Siggy’s worth at least 50M, so cought it up Toffe”. Should have kept their traps shut, and said “we need to think about it, need a replacement in first” instead of the extortionist posturing. Ronnie, your just not that koo, man.

Or, maybe, but unlikely, Levy is talking to Everton and says we will back off Siggy if you give us Barclays plc..to be honest I think he could be good for us but at the end of last season this to me would of been underwhelming, however the way its going “again” this transfer I’ll be over the bloody moon to have him…let’s get King and one more and its not the end of the world, anything less and it’s high risk yet again…..

  • Superspoz 🔪 July 17, 2017 at 9:21 pm

Status and money. Money and status.

    • Still Nil Nil July 17, 2017 at 8:55 pm

Isn’t that the same for any club tho?

      • David Dillenberg July 17, 2017 at 8:58 pm

Nilly true but winning only 2 trophies in in the last 20 years is IMO a poor return of a club of Spurs stature.

        • David Dillenberg July 17, 2017 at 9:01 pm

As Fergy was (lucky to be given luxury of time) ultimately Poch will correctly be judged on winning silverware.

    • David Dillenberg July 17, 2017 at 8:57 pm

It’s my fear that if Alexis Sanchez stays at Arse + some additional signings they could be a force to be reckoned with next season.

      • Still Nil Nil July 17, 2017 at 9:08 pm

DD, I’m not sure I said 2 trophies in (it’s 26 years) was good enough.
My point is no team sits on its hands whether successful or not.
Spurs do it in a bloody frustrating manner, but there is always ins and outs to some degree.
As for the Arse, I couldn’t give a flying shit what they do.
If they succumb to paying somebody nearly half a million pounds a fuckin WEEK then there’s something morally corrupt in that (not that they’re strangers to that).

    • MiT July 17, 2017 at 9:11 pm

I really don’t get this lathering over Barkley. He has been absolute pants for Everton and I cannot see him being the difference between us winning ” stuff” ior continuing to sit on the sidelines as other “football” clubs invest to try and win “stuff”. I suppose little wee baldy bonce is wacking one off somewhere hidden in the shadows of the new stadium muttering like Golam about Barkley as his “Precious” and how Pooch will turn him into more gold to sell on…..

    • paul July 17, 2017 at 8:50 pm

i’m fairly underwhelmed at the prospect of either of them; siggy we’ve seen all there is to see and i for one don’t see him as a forward step. Barky – who the fuck knows, he could be a revelation under Poch but equally he could really be as thick as he looks and just never get ze philosophy..

  • richspurs July 17, 2017 at 8:05 pm

    To dare is to do

    Which equates to:
Pretending is much the same as actually doing shit.

    Which equates to:
We won’t win SHIT with Levi&Lewis

15 years into the 5 year plan, 1 league cup under our 3rd worst manager of all time.

Levi&Lewis are con-artists, the club is geared towards the £70m they paid for the club to be protected, eventually they’ll probably sell to some corporation, and we might see some silverware…might depending on how much debt the corporation put on spurs.

But let’s be thankful the club is run properly and we don’t have a rich owner who bails us out and buys us great players who win silverware.

I wish Levi&Lewis had sold to Abrahmovitch when he wanted to buy spurs…cunts!

If that had happened then The Poochmiester wouldn’t be at the club and we would then miss out on the forth coming dynasty that will mirror the great Liverpool sides of the 80’s, just saying……..

  • TheCincinnatiYid July 17, 2017 at 8:00 pm

Very interesting but neither would push Spurs over the line into Cup Country. The inspirational game changing player we crave, caliber of Bale, we will never buy.

    • Jacob AF July 17, 2017 at 8:40 pm

Are Dele, Eriksen, & Kane not of the quality to navigate us into Cup Country? It seems like depth is of paramount importance and not, as nice as it would be, signing the likes of D. Costa thus limiting the number of signings that can be made.

  • RecaroN17 July 17, 2017 at 7:59 pm
