There was a brilliantly awful piece in the Guardian before the Croatia game.

A gushing interview with Dele Alli who said he was looking forward to nutmegging Luka Modric.

It is this tinpot mentality that keeps Alli in his place.

Which is an inauthentic footballer who when pushed, can turn it on for approximately 30 minutes in any one game.

Southgate may have got half an hour out of him in total in Russia, who either knows or cares?

Dele is an unconvincing midfielder at the best of times, and his recurring save form grace is nipping in and scoring the odd goal, just as our collective blood pressure is about to burst a vital organ.

When he’s not being ineffectual, he’s cheating and falling over with a look of faux confusion on his face.

He doesn’t defend and his attacking is marred with repeatedly losing control of the ball.

Of course Alli apologists who remarkably, are legion will be quick to tell you about his injury.

To quote a wise man, ‘well he didn’t look very injured, he just looked useless’.

Beyond the cretinous finger trick handshakes there’s fundamentally no substance – much like his faked handbags routine – something about meat and a butcher’s pencil springs to mind.

Alli, Lingard and Sterling are all pretenders.

Footballing pseuds.

If you disagree, the good news is Pochettino views him as undroppable.

The bad news is that you cannot can’t substantiate your counterclaim with anything coherent.

    Harry Hotspur
He’s got a girlfriend who wears more make up than he does and a clothing line selling bomber jackets for £29.
I’m in awe of him as human being.

I’d rather a player get on the powder and drink themselves to oblivion than that nonsense.

Hilarious stuff in the media reacting to Modric comments of Croatia being underrated by England. Cry’s of….”what’s he talking about?”. “I don’t remember this at all!?”…. Haha! Before the match you couldn’t move for an Ian Wright or Adrian Durham claiming, somewhat peculiarly, that England were a better side and would win. Luka isn’t wrong. England met quality finally and came up short. And that, as they say, is that.

    • Lord Croker July 12, 2018 at 1:20 pm

They had a good competition in regards to aspirations before a ball was kicked. As it progressed some players were found out and some blossomed. Triptastic was a revelation. Croatia worthy finalists.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 12, 2018 at 1:23 pm

Yep. The draw helped em exceed all expectation, they can’t be too down. I said Brazil or France v Croatia final couple weeks back, not surprised its come to light.

  • PlayitagainSamways July 12, 2018 at 1:03 pm

Dele is the ultimate bringer of cognitive dissonance.

Shiity flicks. Kack first touch. Falling over but with a goal and assist or 2 in the same game.

My brain tells me im watching a shitty lightweight but his stats tell me im watching a boy that does the stuff needed to win games.

I swear I read on this very blog that Ali has a very specific role in Pochs game plan which basically explains why he does the flicks all the time? But I might have made that up as that is what liars like me do.

  • Andrew July 12, 2018 at 12:45 pm

Dele is more effective in and around the penalty area. He should have been further forward, the country is obsessed with Sterling, he won the prem with citeh because of the quality around him, not his quality.
Dele is smarter than sterling, he can create and score ,I know he didn’t have the best season but he created chances for spurs. I think he sometimes seems not too bothered ,but I’ll bet if left it would be for a very top club. We have a very good player, and imo he will be a great for us or a real Madrid or utd. We should get behind the lad, even if he is a bit annoying sometimes.

  • Andrew July 12, 2018 at 12:34 pm

    Raheem sterling.

  • Andrew July 12, 2018 at 12:33 pm

England were too reliant on Sterling ,the set up the team to get him up front to score eventually cost England. Kane was virtually a midfielder, the best striker trying to create for the worst finisher tandem sterling

    • Gus July 12, 2018 at 12:35 pm

Kane was definitely neutered by the system. I don’t recall too many goals from open play

  • VincentianMagic July 12, 2018 at 12:24 pm

I’m hoping the bravery Poch spoke about will actually commence soon!

I’d also like us to retain the services of Toby and Rose as we will just be wasting money on replacements that in all likelihood will be inferior.

By all means offload Sissy, Llorente, N’Jokeo and Jansen. If extra monies are required get shot if Aurier as KPW will be a better player and we already have Tripps.

If we can tempt Modric back for £15M then that would be a start.

    • VincentianMagic July 12, 2018 at 12:25 pm

      • VincentianMagic July 12, 2018 at 12:27 pm

And steer well clear of that Colombian DM. He plays like a midfield version of Aurier.

    • Andrew July 12, 2018 at 12:49 pm

Modric and either Bale or Dybala from juve. That would be some team

  • hillBilly July 12, 2018 at 12:16 pm

Dele had a poor season and a poor World Cup. Last night he was asked to do a more defensive job when actually he should have been dropped for RLC, who is better suited to that role.

Kane played deeper as a 10 with little service apart from Pickfords lumps up-field for him to head on to Sterling. This tactic meant England failed to get the best out of either Kane or Sterling and poor Harry got battered and bruised throughout the knockout stages.

Trippier had a great tournament but I can’t help thinking that was because he was playing as a genuine wing-back with Walker as cover behind.

  • TopOfThePochs July 12, 2018 at 12:01 pm

This year is Deles real test.
It’ll determine if he’s just had an inevitable dip in his form for a season at his still young age, or if he is actually Jermaine Jenas Mk 2.

    • dilly July 12, 2018 at 12:17 pm

Compared to Lucas Moura and Aurier (both of whom have something to prove) when despite his enigmatic mercurial style drifting in and out of games IMO Alli has nothing to prove at Spurs!

  • legoverlass July 12, 2018 at 11:13 am

Ok..enough about the perennial losers S̶p̶u̶r̶s̶ ̶ England. Have we been brave yet Pooch? We are just a few weeks away from a new season. In this brave new world that you spoke about at the end of last season, have we “dared to do” as you requested ( before you signed a new improved contract with a huge increase in wonga, whilst supporting Levy in denying Toby the same) In this brave new world in the New Cheese Emporium has the lack of any brave activity whatsoever been simply waiting for a “big club” like Man Utd to buy one of our best ever defensive players to support their campaign against us next season and in so doing provide us with funds to be “brave”. Tell me Pooch, is selling a player like Toby and buying a player like Grealish from a relegated side an indicator of how “brave” we intend to be and how we are prepared to “dare and do”, after all as emblazoned in big new shiny expensive tiles at the New Cheese Emporium the “Game is About Glory” or should that read the “Game is about the maximum ROI on the minimum investment”

  • legoverlass July 12, 2018 at 10:46 am

I will not be jumping up and down and waving flags and saying how wonderful the England squad have been in the World Cup. Keane was spot on when he said that this was probably the best chance England had to win the World Cup in decades. We have been flag waving and jumping up and down shouting “football is coming home” yet should we be so excited at beating Tunisa, Panama, Columbia and Sweden. Thankfully apart from Belgium we had an easy ride to the semi finals and yes Croatia are technically a very good side but we collapsed in the second half and allowed them back into the game by falling deeper into a negative formation and Southgate let that happen. It also happened against Columbia where we did exactly the same and allowed them to nick an equaliser in the last minute of full time. Yes we got to the semi finals but this competition only comes around once every four years and it could be another few decades before the deck falls as favourably for us again.

    • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:48 am

The ‘it’s coming home thing’ was very ‘mind the gap’…

  • Ali's-Baba July 12, 2018 at 10:46 am

    Harry Hotspur
    Or Tim Henman’s mother

or Greg Rusedski….He had a good go, bless him….and he wasn’t even English…
As the game went on yesterday, and 5 of our boys were on field, it did feel like England were getting inevitably more “Spursy”, oh for an Erik/Son

I think England needed a Lallama or however you spell it….maybe Spurs need a Lallama too? Modric was properly good last night, shame he traded the Chicken Badge for multiple trophies and huge wages…..

  • Jason Sault July 12, 2018 at 10:39 am

Omg really it was sterling until we played Croatia now it’s Delli. We didn’t play any anyone until we played Croatia. Everyone of those players got us to the semi final. In Croatia you have a very good organised experienceed team one of the favourites. We got beat by the better team simple. Probably one of the best midfields in the tournament we lost to the team that could now win the world cup. If we had Ericsson along side alli with defenders of vatongun and Toby behind them it might of been different. But this is not Tottenham against real Madrid. I know it hurts I’m gutted too but really? ? Stop moaning and f××k××get grow up be proud of them and stop trying to find a scape goat any mug can take the easy option

      Me too

  • legoverlass July 12, 2018 at 10:33 am

We could and should have been 3-0 up at half time. Kane is clearly exhausted which means another barren August for Spurs at least before he starts to recover some zip and verve. What drove me to distraction last night was seeing Croatia re-organise in the second half and push both wingbacks up into wide positions and we fell deeper defensively into a back five. Southgate should have reacted immediately and closed down the space that this created allowing them time to continually put crosses into our box. We were negative and we deservedly got punished. Young looked as if he was carrying an injury from the start as he hardly made it past the halfway line the entire match. Ali and Linguard in the middle was a complete waste of space. They are not midfielders and were marking empty spaces in the second half giving Croatia time on the ball unchallenged and if you allow Luka Modric that opportunity he will punish you. And there is the rub for England and Spurs. England do not have a world class talent in the middke and Luka is a world class player so is Toby and the former was sold and the latter will be soid by Levy whilst we attempt to sign the likes of Grealish. It is beyond paraody.

  • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:29 am

The spine of the England team will be left in tact:
    Replacement for Rose and Young.

The Ox and Lellana will return.
A place for Winks if he grabs his chance.

    Alli plus others.

    • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:30 am

      *Missed Trippier

  • Daveyboi July 12, 2018 at 10:22 am

Of 9 Spurs Players in the semi finals 8 couldn’t finish their dinner.

This is yet another huge indication that they do not have winning mentality when it comes to the crunch.

And all the previous they’ve learned/learning is not a thing when they persistently fail at every big event. If anything it makes them experienced losers

    • Accy July 12, 2018 at 10:27 am

If Spurs were a person, they’d be Tim Henman.

      • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:37 am

        Or Tim Henman’s mother

  • Blanchflower July 12, 2018 at 10:21 am

Dele shocking throughout. No-one can justify that lazy bambi routine of the pitch. Problem is he believes the hype and when people give him praise when he is utterly ineffectual, then that becomes his benchmark. Also, Kane should have played as a 9 not a 10 throughout the tournament. He’s a great striker, not a great 10.

    • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:39 am

He’s got a girlfriend who wears more make up than he does and a clothing line selling bomber jackets for £29.

  • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:17 am

Unless I am mistaken it was a straight choice between Alli or Jonjo Shelvey for that slot. Southgate selected Alli when perhaps Jonjo Shelvey would have been more effective.

    • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:22 am

Much like our frustrations over Eriksen. Alli is Alli. What you see is what you get. A mixture of the sublime to the rediculous!

    • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:38 am

Does Jonjo Shelvey owe you money?

      • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:44 am

HH No! but based on current form IMO he deserved to be selected.

        • dilly July 12, 2018 at 10:55 am

Whilst I acknowledge he gets the odd mention! IMO it’s with some justification due to his tenacious qualities and ability to open up defences with long raking passes!

  • Lilywhite without the II July 12, 2018 at 10:16 am

The problem with England is the grassroots and academy’s…I’ve had experience with them in recent years and the biggest problem going forward with English football is they still look at athleticism and speed over technical ability. They over look so many kids especially once they reach 11plus and unless the kid really has the desire he will get lost and move on to something else…then you also have the problem of not being able to play through the winter months if the weather is bad, unless you are already in the academy system as there are not enough facilities…

    • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:39 am

This might explain why our Academy produces athletes who can’t play football.

      • Bobby July 12, 2018 at 11:10 am

They should put that above the entrance gate

  • Ronan July 12, 2018 at 10:14 am

One of the main reasons they’re out from what i saw is because Southgate consigned Dele to defensive midfield dogwork, while giving far less talented and intelligent players, like Lingard and Sterling, licence to waste opportunities up front.

Here’s why poch never drops him, or even subs him …

Dele Alli’s big game goals in last two seasons:
    2016 v Manchester United
    2016 v Manchester City
    2017 v Chelsea (2)
    2017 v Manchester City
    2017 v Chelsea
    2017 v Arsenal
    2017 v Liverpool
    2017 v Real Madrid (2)
    2018 v Chelsea (2)
    2018 v Manchester United
    World Cup quarter-final v Sweden

  • legoverlass July 12, 2018 at 10:12 am

Ali has been ineffectual for us at club level so how that warrants a starting position in our international squad in a World Cup is beyond my understanding. He has been hyped up so much by the media that it appears they are all afraid of admitting that they may have been wrong about him. He has been found out by other teams and has neither the ability or character to do anything about it. He loses possession so many times and is like an After Eight wafer in the tackle. His only strength when he started playing for us was drifting into the far side of the box from a deep position and having a World Class player like Toby ping long diagonal balls to him. That was the position he scored from against Sweden.

    • Harry Hotspur July 12, 2018 at 10:13 am

He operates as a shadow striker – he’s an opportunist.
