Look, we lost. I get that. Buttons the indignity subsides, it was to a mob that have won the league title and were, y’know… beaten by Liverpool who are still above us. The form is good. There is an inarguable consistency there.

Guardiola saluted his champions-elect for an “outstanding season” after they edged ever closer to the title.

Manchester City boss Pep told PA Sport : “People say it was a big failure, what happened last week, but they don’t understand the reality of football. You can win the Champions League in seven games, the league is 10 months. I’m sorry, it’s much more important what these guys have done this season. Hopefully we can celebrate with our fans against Swansea and be champions because they deserve it.”

I wish Pep well.

Poch? Koch needs to pull his head outta his… Ask not what Tottenham Hotspur, ask what you can do for Tottenham Hotspur.

The only thing known for certain is that Syria has descended into chaos, and the war is being used by external powers as a proxy battleground.
We have the crazy situation such as the US, with very strong Christian and Jewish pressure groups, trying to remove the Assad regime which has provided tolerance and protection towards ancient Christian and Jewish communities. If he were overthrown, I would think they would be eliminated be Islamist terrorists very quickly.

This is true Glos.Im not sure they want to remove Assad, just diminish him but they do want to diminish Russian influence for sure (Russia wants to do the same to America)

  • Ronwol1960-61 April 16, 2018 at 12:12 pm

American policy was for many years stop them hurting you (or the proxy countries) and bombing targets to diminish their power but not regime change.
After they attacked Kuwaits oil they went in and after 9/11 they went in. The fight was always going to be from afar before that. Now they are back to that.
Russia wants to play a strong role there as well as they have gained influence by helping Iran and Syria and the Saudis and Israelis want to diminish that while America wants to make sure there is a flow of oil

    • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 12:40 pm

The Middle East is a nightmare. Count in the Turks now with a dictator in charge and a full scale war brewing with the Kurds and it’s descending into a bar room brawl.

  • Sexy Beast April 16, 2018 at 12:02 pm

Raz your factually correct article is in fact wrong on one bit for sure and that is the civil war bit, it most definitely is not a civil war when the West has armed and funded the opposition to Assad, it is totally about regime change.
Assad might well be a tyrant but Syria was a relatively peaceful country before Lybia was decimated and ISIS rise from the carnage.

    • Ronwol1960-61 April 16, 2018 at 12:07 pm

They were peaceful while dominated by a tyrant. It was the only way.Things changed when the west got attacked, then they couldnt contain the situation any more and they had to go in which didnt work out.
This is not about regime change. It is about proxy wars and in this case the US giving it a helping hand

      • Sexy Beast April 16, 2018 at 12:15 pm

        West got attacked when?

        • Ronwol1960-61 April 16, 2018 at 12:20 pm

9/11 and Also Kuwait (the supply of oil)

They had a policy before of attack from afar in the ME or using proxies.

They went in after those two times

          • Sexy Beast April 16, 2018 at 12:34 pm

911 was nothing to do with Islam nor terrorists it was a false flag to initiate war on terror and the decimation of parts of the Middle East.
Bin Laden was FBI most wanted man for 10 years but there was no mention of 911 on his crime sheet.
The worlds most wanted man living in a house for ten years shot in the head and buried at sea in 24 hours? 😂😂😂 very funny story 👍

So the official story tells us that two planes knocked down three skyscrapers on the same day?
The plane crash site in shanksville had a giant hole in the ground, all that was left were small fragments of metal, no fuselage no landing gear no seats no wing section no six tonne engines no body’s and yet two red bandannas and two identity cards survived?? 😂😂

      SB the ref to Civil War refers to the Syrian Govt against the Rebels, there are 4 Wars going on in Syria ;
      1. Syrian Govt against The Rebels
      2. Israel against the Iranian Backed Forces
      3. US against the remnants of IS
      4. Turkey against the (US backed) Kurds
Even you can’t argue that number 1 is not a Civil War !

Raz,I dont even think its about the Iran Saudi thing.Thats the minor part of it anyway, Its about Russia getting back influence control they have especially the money and China is in with that too.
Kim Il and the Saudis and Iranians are pawns in that game.
With Trump we dont know where its at. With the way he does things who knows what the intentions are.

This is the greater situation. All the others are minor and play a role.
The Syrian thing has nothing to do with the chemical weapons.Sure they want to stop them but Trump said himself that he didnt care if Saddam Hussein threw a little gas around years ago.

Is it the same cnuts who said “let’s go into Lybia”?
Who are saying “let’s go into Syria”?
Let’s not forget the cnuts who in the sixties said “let’s go into Vietnam “
Based on an attack on a US Warship that was totally fabricated and cost 58,000 us lives and 2/3 Million Vietnamese lives.
Why does anyone with a functioning brain believe that it is business for the Military Industrial Complex and nothing else? 🤓

        • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 11:12 am

The origin of the war in Vietnam was so much more than that. I suggest you check up how South Vietnam became independent from French colonial Indochina in the 1950s and was recognised by 87 countries, but was denied entry to the UN by a Soviet Veto (here we go again with the fecking Russians.)

          • Sexy Beast April 16, 2018 at 11:20 am

Fact is the gulf of Tonkin incident was the trigger for the carpet bombing of Vietnam, and the slaughter of millions, another pointless war carried out by the US military

            • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 11:31 am

Presumably it became pointless because the US gave up and left. You may as well say any war was pointless – for the losing side. WW2 was pointless for the Nazis. If they hadn’t invaded Poland maybe they’d still be in power in Greater Germany (Austria and the Czech Republic.)

If you never watch it you will not know, RT is likely more accurate then the BBC which is also state funded. I watch cross talk occasionally which has input from four corners of a particular debate and makes for good listening and that way I think you can form a better idea of what is happening.
BBC by comparison is often very biased and doesn’t have opponents to a particular subject therefore not worth listening to.

  • Mad Carew April 16, 2018 at 7:15 am

    Syria an overview

The fundamental truth is that this is a piece of the secular struggle for supremacy between Iran and Saudi Arabia, complicated by Russia’s need to maintain large military bases in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey’s need to squelch Kurdish independence, and Israel’s need for security.

Of course it’s also about a civil war between Assad’s minority ethnic clan and the much larger Sunni population, as well as the need to stop Syria from being taken over by Sunni nihilistic terrorists. But that’s not the real problem. The Civil War is slowly being won by Assad, thanks to Iran and Russia, and Syria’s use of chemical weapons to shorten the fight. The terrorists have been defeated and can be kept under control.

The real problem is that Iran is transforming Syria into a captive client state, a protectorate, and Russia is enabling this because it wants to maintain its bases in that country, which it deems to be absolutely essential, much as how the US deems essential its bases in East Asia and Western Europe.

Whereas before, Syria was a close ally of Iran and Russia, it remained essentially an independent country. This is no longer the case. Assad is no longer capable of surviving without active Russian and Iranian military support. That makes him a captive client, and portends for a permanent Russian and Iranian presence.

Iran is using Syria as a land bridge for resupplying Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran is militarizing Syria, establishing bases there, and making Syria a potential launching area for strikes against Israel, to complement Hezbollah’s massive missile infrastructure in Lebanon. Israel cannot and will not allow this to happen, but Iran is determined to press ahead.

Israel is likely to use the last three years of a Trump Administration to try to permanently stop Iran from achieving its objectives. This portends for war, which will likely suck in the US, NATO, Russia and Turkey.

    • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 8:37 am

The only thing for certain about last Friday’s attack by US, UK, and France, was that it was done for publicity at home and not for effect in Syria. Russia wasn’t bothered by what happened, and Assad shrugged the damage off as a pin prick.

We’ve been had. A lot of wind and noise, much ado about nothing.

      • Mad Carew April 16, 2018 at 8:41 am

        • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 8:43 am

Yep. US and Russia agreed that a staged missile attack would happen that would have no effect at all.

      • East Stand April 16, 2018 at 9:07 am

The US and the Western allies cannot be seen to be in support of Assad or Russia, hence the whole isle of bad blood between the West and Russia.

To me the whole thing is a game, the West wants Assad in power in Syria because there’s nobody else. The trouble with these people the West put in charge as with Saddam, they go rogue and you have to put them back in line. No Assad or Russia and the bloodbath continues with the locals anyway.

The Islamist rebel groups and the Kurds could have done ISIS over themselves with weapons and supplies from the west, then they’d have used those resources to fight Assad.

    • East Stand April 16, 2018 at 8:58 am

Russia are also acting on behalf of the Israel and the Western Allies, despite all this tough talking from Trump and the British PM. Russia seems to be doing the dirty work (very dirty work) for everyone else that doesn’t want to see Iran gain traction in the region. Like you say, Israel’s security is also key factor in all of this.

ISIS as a fighting ‘force’ acted as a tactical decoy in Syria and Iraq in order to legitimise yet further Western involvement in the area. The attacks in Europe also helped build support. Last time it was WMD’s, this time it was ISIS. Anyone who can’t see that just needs to think about it and it’s bloody obvious.

If it weren’t for ISIS how could the West justify getting involved again? It was enough to even get many people to see the logic in Russia backing Assad. “What’s worse? ISIS or Assad?”

    • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 8:32 am

Poch doesn’t seem too bothered with the cup. So I’m guessing the players will have to motivate themselves.

If Sissoko starts, that’ll be proof Poch doesn’t care.

      • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 8:37 am

Presumably attracting a crowd of 80,000+ the players will not need motivating. With a decent chance of winning some silverware it’s time to deliver!

We need 3 more PL wins to secure top 4 so, if we beat Brighton, there is no reason whatsoever not to have a good go at it vs Yanited. I think he will put out a relatively strong team, possibly including Moura, but if that means Lloris in goal then, ironically, we’re probably done for…

        Jose will want this trophy.
If he wants it more than Poch does, we have a problem.

Have to agree with you on this. Now Jose’s dream of bludgeoning his way to the PL title just went down the crapper thanks to WBA, the sniff of silverware will ensure that this will be no walk in the park for Spurs. I’m not optimistic about our chances because neither Poch or some of his players handle the really big occasions all that well (yeah, I know, RM) and Jose knows how to win things.

  • JackDLad April 16, 2018 at 3:51 am

There’s never going to be a perfect season even for Citeh, their exceptional coach and their exceptional bank account as their exit from the Champions league proved. We broke the “hoodoo” in the Autumn but we still need to remember that all out home games have been in a barn with no atmosphere and we have punched above our weight. Walker has been a much bigger loss than any of us would care to admit as has Toby’s absence. I still think we could scrape second or third and I await with bated breath to see who goes and who comes in

Don’t speak for me – I always said Walker was a great loss and I am still befuddled how we are not playing one of the two best defenders we have and possibly (pre-injury) the best defensive duo in the league.

Say what you like about Guardiola (and I’ve been one of his critics in the past) but give him the means to do the job and he absolutely delivers and with a brand of football that’s quite scintillating to watch. Could the likes of Pochettino, Howe, Dyche (or even Allardyce) do the same under similar circumstances? Possibly. Possibly not. But Guardiola definitely has. This City side is quite possibly the best club side I’ve ever seen and Guardiola deserves respect not only for what he’s done but also the way he’s doing it.

City will win the league again next year and probably the year after that as well. They’re that good.

    • Caveman April 16, 2018 at 1:09 am

I agree Unk, but they have to do something with football to create a fairer level playing field. They handicap horse in horseracing but if you have enough money in football you can buy a world class squad and challenge the likes of Huddersfield and that’s deemed to be fair. It Isn’t and that’s fact. They will have to come up with an answer soon even if it means a European super league or indeed a World super league. Then we can return to teams that don’t qualify playing one another on a level playing field. The only teams capable of winning the premiership right now are Man C, Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea. All monied teams. The rest are permanent ‘also rans’.

City are good, of course they are, they have loads of quality and have won the league but if they’re that good they wouldn’t have lost TWICE to Liverpool away and once at home (the second time away was unforgivable as they had the league game to understand what to expect).

City, with the league in the bag had to get past Liverpool to make the C.L semis and they totally fucked it up, they bottled it. Back to a league game against us with no real pressure to collect points they start playing better, and we didn’t turn up to help them along their merry way.

The same people creaming their pance over City are the same people tipping them for the quadruple a couple of months ago. Pep has only ever managed the most financially powerful clubs in the division in which he has worked.

To me the capitulation to Liverpool and the inability to beat their city rivals Utd to lift the title is Pep seriously fluffing his lines given their endless budget.

Yes, they are a terrific squad and although he delivers attractive football is Pep the ruthless winner he’s made out to be or flat track bully who’ll never have to manage WBA or Stoke in a relegation scrap?

City have had it easy this season and they may well do again next time round but they didn’t turn up at three crunch games recently. Beating us with the league won means sod all…

        • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:29 am

Easty unless it’s Spurs who win the title seemingly you cease to be gracious with PL title winners. Now it’s criticising Citeh. Before you raised conspiracy theories about the Foxes winning the title. Just applaud the victors.

        • Ronwol1960-61 April 16, 2018 at 1:48 am

I wouldnt diminish what City have done. If we did the same things thats ok too.
Pep is a top notch manager. What they are not allowed to have a dip in form????? Since when is perfect a standard?

          • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:52 am

Ron IMO Poch will probably review his own position in the next couple of years and move on if he fails to deliver any silverware.

          • East Stand April 16, 2018 at 7:10 am

The highest pressure games City have had this season they have blown. That’s my point.

I haven’t said at any point that they don’t deserve it. I’m just not getting as carried away with their league win as some people are. They have been great to watch and their owners have invested the money to be like that.

With the league won the champions league was the other big one, they knew that and completely fucked it. Pep included.

If it were Poch he’d be the bigger clutz on the planet, Pep is allowed to balls it up even with their budget?

If you manage a club like that and you’re the ‘best manager in the world’ you aren’t allowed to blow up like that.

The league win then becomes deflection from a separate failure? Bullshit…

            • gloster1861 April 16, 2018 at 8:30 am

              Bang on Easty.

Pep hasn’t proved anything other than he can get world class players to play nice pretty football.

In other words, he’s competent. That’s ALL he’s proven, competency.

At odds of 1,000 -1 one notable exception to the rule being Leicester City!!

  • Syd April 16, 2018 at 12:52 am

I have to agree Harry, the backs are our biggest problem. Davies and Trips can do the job but no where near consistent enough. Ben D doesn’t have the ball skills when the ball is at this feet and being pressured although he is OK on the run and in clear spaces. I rate Trips better with the ball at his feet but less so when he is on the run with it. I would love to see an Alonso type player. Aurier seems to be finding his feet but I shit myself anytime is around any attacker in the box.
I thought it was magic when we had Verts, Sanchez and Toby as a back 3. To me this our best option and allows for all sorts of things to be chopped and changed in front of them depending on how the game is going and the opposition.
It provides options which we are lacking at the back.
Sanchez has a problem of not quite being able to read the through ball and tends to get on the wrong side of the attacker quite often. He is young and will sort that out.
Vertonghen has turned into the best defender in the league imo. Unbelievable for quite a few games now and without him I don’t think the 1 loss in 15 would be realistic.
We need speed from the wing backs and we certainly don’t have it in Trips, Ben D or Serge.
We had it with Walker and Rose and we need upgraded versions of those two.
    Again, Dembele – Brilliant!!!!

    • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:01 am

One FB in demand in the summer is Ryan Bertrand (£25m price tag) who has been mentioned in dispatches when apparently there are a cluster of clubs keen to secured his services.

      • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:14 am

Would not touch him. He is not good enough to take us to the enxt level DD

        • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:17 am

Syd, disagree. I rate him. Who else is available?

          • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:19 am

I really think we have to look overseas for fast attacking wing backs DD.

            • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:21 am

Fair point as Aurier, Davies and Trippier have all been found wanting.

              • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:24 am

They are good but not fast and we need to just get to that next level. we need speed imo.
I actually think we will buy a few players of quality in the next window. No excuses now for Poch. He has been at the club now for a while and should know exactly what and who we need.

          • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:21 am

I always said Zabaletta was shit and look at him now. He looks as good as he really is, Pep saw that and went and bought speed. For all his caffuffles, Walker gets back very very quickly.

            • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 1:23 am

Interesting to see if we make a bid for Bale in the summer.

              • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:25 am

I doubt it DD but I have said it before I would have him but not at the expense of upsetting the others with his wage demands.

          • Syd April 16, 2018 at 1:29 am

I don’t know the answer DD but how many assists has he had this season?

    • David Dillenberg April 16, 2018 at 12:51 am

Agreed. Not an enviable decision but Poch’s immediate selection headache is whether or not to drop Lloris. Naturally it wont happen but a tough decision on Lloris and playing Moura.

    • UnkleTaff April 16, 2018 at 12:55 am

Mourinho never wastes any time in distancing himself from a bad result. It’s always the fault of the players — never him — and yesterday was no exception.

How do you think Pep would fare with the current Spurs squad then Ronwol? Think his tactics would make us champions? Or perhaps the squad isn’t quite good enough?

      Answers on a postcard.

      • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 11:30 pm

Pep plays a sophisticated system with talented players that rely a lot on the pass
        Is that enough information Glos?

        • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 11:32 pm

We rely a lot on tough tackling passing and some exceptional acts
I would say Verts,Dembele,Kane,Eriksen might make the team and Dele if he could learn

        • DAVID April 15, 2018 at 11:33 pm

We’d have won the league a couple of seasons ago instead of finishing third to 2 teams with inferior starting elevens and squads. IMO.

          • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 11:42 pm

But the whole game would be different. Pep is not reinventing the wheel. He is taking something that he understands fully and applying it with other teams and Im sure adding ideas to it.
Yes maybe they could never do with our players what Poch has done but thats a lot of speculation to start with

          • Ronwol1960-61 April 16, 2018 at 12:00 am

David as to the point I guess about Leicester etc.I think that was a very different season. The ball fell right at the feet of Leicester at a time where there were teams going through transition and ever ball to Vardy for instance seemed to go in.It was a very lucky year for them and we could have won the league except Leicester didnt go spursy and we did.Thats a lot to say for them. Now everything is different and we have done well to be where we are.
In 1961-62 Ipswich came up from he division below us and then won the league.I wasnt long before they went back down.
You cant go by these one offs especially now with the type of talent that the big clubs in the Premier league get.

            • DAVID April 16, 2018 at 12:12 am

I agree RON, all the big teams that season were below par,it was obvious at the time it was a one off season as it only needed one of them to rediscover their form in following seasons and we would be screwed.
That season was our one shot at the title and yet despite having a better starting eleven and better squad than Leicester or Arsenal, they both managed to finish above us. Very Spursy.

It’s easy to be in charge of either the highest spending club in recent history or one of the top two in your league.the guy is a fraud.he couldn’t win the league with our squad.

      • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 11:37 pm

Most couldnt because our system has kept us afloat and some great work by a few players
Pep though is world class with great players.Where you have it wrong is that Pep and the other top managers wouldnt manage average players or would get rid of them as quick as possible.

Its like saying Harrods and Harvey Nicks cant sell cheaper shirt brands. The fact is they would never buy cheap shirt brands

  • gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 11:10 pm

I’d love to see Toby play against Brighton. But I’m pretty sure he won’t even be on the bench.

  • Andrew April 15, 2018 at 9:29 pm

We started off as though we were not bothered. We didn’t push up on them, our front three just weren’t at the race for the first twenty-five minutes and it was too late by then . Citeh have very quick players, as soon as they got the ball they passed forward or diagonally, their pace killed us. We,on the other hand went side and back, with no real pace,(actually pace was sitting on the bench, moura and son).
I think starting lamela was a mistake against citeh, not sure running around a bit is good enough, when pace and goal threat is what was needed. Pep must have been pleased to see lamela starting.
Now we need to beat Brighton on Tuesday, otherwise the blue racists will smell blood, and are capable of winning the remainder of their games.
We can play better, pitty our players weren’t really up for it. Although we scared them when we scored, we just didn’t have enough.

We broke the “hoodoo” in the Autumn but we still need to remember that all out home games have been in a barn with no atmosphere and we have punched above our weight. Walker has been a much bigger loss than any of us would care to admit as has Toby’s absence. Harry – Having watched a couple of your videos now my eye is occasionally drawn to the decor chez Hotspur. Do you actually find the light that’s always situated directly behind you useful for reading? It’s wedged between two book cases and has a pretty big drum-type shade, I’m not convinced it can give out that much light?

To a certain extent, I think we have to put this loss down to playing a very good City side but it is irritating that we’re seemingly unable to press with energy that Liverpool can manage. This felt to me like a game where we should have gone Rose/Aurier rather than Trippier/Davies.

    That’s just my opinion though.

We are where we are, mostly failing to beat the big boys when we need to. There has been some notable mprovements this season such as against Dortmund, Real, Chelsea, but we need consistency against. Also, if we cant win, then we must not lose. Sat may well make or break us as an improving force. COYS.
