Enjoyable stuff last night all things considered, of course had Kane not directed us away from the brown smelly stuff and toward glory there would be a greater emphasis on soul searching this morning than there will be.

On Kane I disagree that he entirely saved us, remember he did benefit from the build up play no matter how scant it was. In fact for me, and other expert analysts the absence of meaninglessly bloated possession stats was refreshing opposed to a concern.

Far too many Spurs 聽players had the first touch of an Uber driver. Son in particular was inept and perhaps much of this was due to the pitch which I believe is due to be replaced next week.

Aurier and Sissoko developing a relationship of sorts and this is pleasing. Finally, despite many of you incessantly jumping the gun we witnessed Sissy’s best game in the shirt.

Fans don’t understand how a 3 works – nor does Pochettino.聽This is something I’ll return to later on.

Trippier on the left does not work. It doesn’t work. If you’re looking for a positioning that works, that isn’t it.

Harry Winks was notably out of his depth but that said more about the way we were set up than it did about his own competencies. The bookies knew and they discounted the odds upon the news about Eriksen breaking.

Fans also struggling to ‘get over’ the loss of Rose and Bonzo. Good luck with your grieving. It’s over. News flash: you can no longer go to the cinema, buy a bag of broken biscuits and get a tram ride home for half a shilling. We’ll include that in the back 5 discussion anon.

Ratings and a tatical analysis en route.

Er, sorry but I have to say (imho) that Winks IS highly gifted technically…
I am going to stick my neck out and say he will go on to be the next Scholes.
He doesn’t give away possession and, as his confidence grows he will stretch teams more and more…
It might be too early to make such outlandish predictions but it is even more foolhardy to write him off especially at a young age.
It amazes me that some people just can’t see his abilities…

Are you sure Kane played or was that another considered guess like Vertonghen ?

  • OrganicPaper September 27, 2017 at 1:55 pm

KWP has played LB for England at various youth levels. I feel he would have been a more suitable option than Trips last night. Im happy with the result but i am scratching my head at why Poch played that system with those players.

    • Mad Carew September 27, 2017 at 1:59 pm

He does seem to flummox us at times, maybe that’s his tictac !

    • AccringtonSpurs September 27, 2017 at 1:59 pm

Agree about KWP. The system worked though, particularly when we changed to 442 – it sucker punched them.

I dont think it was a bad performance at all and Apoel wasnt a bad team, players a good structured game and didnt park the bus. Fair result fair performance. It would have been normal for us to have taken them a bit lightly and so a few good things by Kane and some other good work got the win. It wasnt a boring game. Good win for us

              1. Neuer
              2. De Gea

Given game time I think Winks will make it. Like Kane he’s not technically gifted but he looks to have the drive to succeed and that counts for a lot.

    • BERNARD September 27, 2017 at 1:32 pm

i love Winks he will make it he reminds me of Steve Perryman

    • Urbane Sturgeon September 27, 2017 at 1:41 pm

“Like Kane he鈥檚 not technically gifted” ???!!!!!!

  • Urbane Sturgeon September 27, 2017 at 1:10 pm

I’ll be surprised if Winks makes it past one season at the New Lane.

    • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 1:18 pm

The same could be said for quite a few of our current squad

  • Wig September 27, 2017 at 1:06 pm

Back on topic, I think it’s harsh to say Winks was out of his depth. He’s no Eriksen that’s for sure, but Eriksen is world class and Winks I thought did a decent deputy job. Son was scarily nowhere in the game, considering he gets rotated in and out of the starting 11 you would hope he would have more of an impact. And finally 100% agree that Trippier should never play on the left again. Surely we have so many other better options in that position

    • ronwol196061馃嚚馃嚘 September 27, 2017 at 1:09 pm

Im not knocking Winks but really what contribution does he do.He seens like a worker,a soldier.
What does he do thats impressive?

      • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 1:11 pm

His run through the middle past a couple of players was very nice – free kick to Dele against Everton last year was excellent. Generally though he ups the tempo of our passing and keeps the ball moving nicely.

        We should rotate more

        • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 1:04 pm

We were forced into rotation yesterday and won with 7 first team players missing! After Saturday we don’t have another game for 2 weeks so we have to play the best possible starting 11 and subs

          Hugo
          Davies
          Jan
          Toby
          Sanchez
          Trippier
          Dier
          Alli
          Eriksen
          Kane
+1 (Dembele if fit or Sissoko/Winks)

          Bench
          Vorm
          Foyth
          Sissoko
          Winks
          Son
          lloriente
          KWP

Nkdodou only gets on the bench if Dembele is injured and even then he’s competing with the kids.

Truth is Ron, once Lamlela, Rose and Wanyama are fit he won’t even nearly make the bench

          • ronwol196061馃嚚馃嚘 September 27, 2017 at 1:07 pm

He needs game time. Sorry but there maybe something there

            • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 1:16 pm

              Charity minutes?

If he’s not better than 19 other players in the squad then he deserves nothing. He go minutes last night and did very little – the kid Georgiou did more. At the moment he’s not even really justifying the few minutes he gets.

              • ronwol196061 September 27, 2017 at 1:23 pm

Ok no more on this subject. Its not charity minutes. Did Sissoko get charity minutes after so many terrible games?
                There was a player there.
I see some talent and speed and control with NK so maybe there is something there

                • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 1:36 pm

Sissoko is getting minutes because we’ve got a load of injuries

                  • ronwol196061 September 27, 2017 at 1:46 pm

Sissoko has played a lot of games ahead of other players before this game

    • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 12:56 pm

He wouldn’t make Huddersfield’s bench, Ron, unless they were down to bare bones.

      • ronwol196061馃嚚馃嚘 September 27, 2017 at 1:06 pm

He needs a couple of games. Its funny but Poch too must believe in him somewhat but without more game time we will never knoe
How do you think Sissoko did?

        • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Considering he’s seven years older than Harry W and Dele, and taking into account all of his PL / international experience .. 6.
Feel he could do so much more, that he could run over teams, but there seems to be some kind of mental block.

          • ronwol196061馃嚚馃嚘 September 27, 2017 at 1:15 pm

For the most part he has got 10 or 15 at the end of games no time to really get into any rhythm
Id like to see him get a game or two to see more

            • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 1:22 pm

Maybe, yeah. If only the confidence would grow I feel he could do serious damage. It has to happen very soon though.

              • ronwol196061 September 27, 2017 at 1:27 pm

I was talking about NK above
But Sissoko Poch believes in and i think he is a good player actuallya few times Ive noticed how well he can tackle he can move the ball if he has space

            • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 1:25 pm

Poch may feel it coming. There’s talk he’s going to pass on Barkley in Jan because he thinks Sissy will come good.

              • ronwol196061 September 27, 2017 at 1:28 pm

I didn’t realise we play Madrid twice in a row, that hardly seems fair?? I think Poch should bring on someone like Oakley booth in the 80th minute of the first match to do a number on Ronaldo, take one for the team & make sure the Portugeezer aint back for the return leg..

I saw we had a monster pile up of great games, just didn’t appreciate we play real twice & Dort get to play Apoel twice in a row, that brings em right back into it. Don’t seem right to me that any team should play another twice in a row was all.

        • McG 鈿解毥 September 27, 2017 at 12:53 pm

He’ll have an agreement that he plays all the CL games, and Vorm takes the domestic cup games (except for the semi-final last year.)

It is the Poch way, keep the ball as opposed to the Hoof ball which tends to get won by the opponents. It is always a risk but in Poch’s view worth taking so it ain’t going to change anytime soon, we need to accept that it will go wrong on occasion.

      • BARD September 27, 2017 at 12:06 pm

We were very average and that’s reflected in the scores. The formation for an hour was a mess. Even Toby looked uncomfortable.

          I totally disagree sorry

        • OrganicPaper September 27, 2017 at 12:09 pm

I think that was a symptom of the entire defensive ‘unit’ being a bit out of sorts and unsure. I dont think Toby was bad just that we are used to seeing him in beat mode 99% of the time.

Lets not forget we did keep a clean sheet. Yes we rode our luck but thats football

          • ronwol196061馃嚚馃嚘 September 27, 2017 at 12:12 pm

Sanchez was fantastic,Toby was a little off but not much off,Aurier had some nice touches early I coukdnt see too much that was bad.
Ok there was no brilliance but you numbers are nuts relative to the first half

The Cypriots are not bad their shape is good and pressing etc not bad..but we were in control…just needed some creativity thats all

  • Camus September 27, 2017 at 11:59 am

Please let’s not dig out Son en masse (not directed at you, H.)
1 poor game on a bobbly pitch doesn’t make him useless.
I confidently predict that come the end of the season we will again be celebrating his decidedly useful goal haul and overall contribution to the team effort.

    • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 12:53 pm

He has quite a few games like this though and I guess that’s the annoying thing – he blows so hot and cold. Last night he was poor to the point of embarrassing

      • McG 鈿解毥 September 27, 2017 at 12:11 pm

Hugo still made a decent save or two, Sissy was decent, Winks weren’t close to a 7, that would make Sissy a 9!!! Kane was quite obviously a 10, both feet and a header, perfect…

  • Camus September 27, 2017 at 11:54 am

I hope we never see Trippier, or indeed Son, employed as a left wing-back again. Neither works. Please let’s never speak of this again, Poch…

In other news, I find it interesting that the pitch is being replaced next week, in good time for the visit of the mighty Real & also Dortmund. Nicosia obviously saw us as the weakest link in the group and fancied beating us on a bobbly pitch. No doubt UEFA have insisted that they provide an immaculate bowling green surface for the visit of Real & Dortmund. Cheers lads 馃憤

    • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 12:52 pm

We were missing two lefty defenders – when Rose is back we’ll be agonising about who to leave out

  • OrganicPaper September 27, 2017 at 11:52 am

Interesting the opinion on Slippy MacSlidetackle is so divided. People watch the game in different ways and value certain attributes over others. I think one thing we can all see is he looks a very committed player and a hard worker which goes a long way with fans.
IMO he is not a natural defender and will need to up that side of his game before I consider him our 1st choice RB/RWB. His final ball hasn’t been great (esp last night) but I think his power going forward will create us chances in the long run

    • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 11:59 am

That’s how I see it. The crossing of people like airier, rose and walker isn’t as important as their ability to force bus parkers out of their comfort zones with panic-inducing runs, creating space inside for the magic to happen.

      • McG 鈿解毥 September 27, 2017 at 12:17 pm

The point of a back three is that you don’t rely so much on fullbacks for their defending duties, freeing them up. I think Aurier will eventually replace Trips due to his pace, runs & ability to take a man on. We’ll see I guess!

  • UnkleTaff September 27, 2017 at 11:40 am

Did Aurier even *attempt* a sliding tackle yesterday? I certainly can’t recall seeing him trying one.

And I do like the way he has the confidence to play himself out of a tight spot as opposed to merely hoofing the ball upfield (both last night and against West Ham), thus setting up an attack in the process.

    • Aussie in Switzerland September 27, 2017 at 11:47 am

Wears a Spurs shirt, therefore I love him.

    • Trev1978 September 27, 2017 at 11:48 am

What about his positioning? He was also slower than Corluka tracking back (please note I referenced a white player to avoid being called racist!)

      • Spiderneil September 27, 2017 at 11:55 am

I believe this point has been made repeatedly but you seem to be failing to take it on board but, the whole point of the 3 at the back and two wing backs is to enable him to get forward more. He doesn’t get caught out of position because his position is further forward.

        • BARD September 27, 2017 at 11:57 am

Even as a wingback in a 5 he was all over the shop.

        • Trev1978 September 27, 2017 at 12:02 pm

Yes he has to get forward but he seemed to be running on treacle running back!! What I know from the boss’s approach is that he will have to do both jobs and get up and down (like Walker). He was supposed to be ‘oven ready’ but by the looks of things he will need a year to learn role and what is expected of him. Depends whether he is willing to suck it up and do that.

      • McG 鈿解毥 September 27, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Referencing white players now eh? Oh Supremacist!!

    • Horndog September 27, 2017 at 11:49 am

I did not get an opportunity to watch the match, no live feed here and the delayed broadcast was super ceded by some shit programming, so I cannot comment on last nights performance. Your analysis, however, is exactly what I have noticed about Aurier when I have been able to view him, and that includes some of his matches at PSG.

      • OrganicPaper September 27, 2017 at 11:52 am

And Ivory Coast I might add.

    • Harry Hotspur September 27, 2017 at 12:12 pm

There wasn’t;t a single slide tackle but dicko won’t let that get in the way of a good libelling

  • Trev1978 September 27, 2017 at 11:22 am

nfortunately not 10 years old!! So let鈥檚 get this right- if someone criticises a player you have bigged up and branded a significant upgrade they are a racist? As you may have grasped from my previous comments I feel that the knee jerk vitriol that has been aimed at Alli, Walker and Rose in the past (and currently in Ali’s case) on here has been unjustified- and they are hardly Caucasian!! My comments were based on Aurier’s last two performances which were abysmal- and most people with an objective view would agree. I hope he comes good but he looks like a liability. I think he will spend a lot of time out of the team this year and that鈥檚 where the other side of him will come to the fore- which could be an Adebayor style problem. We have all been there H. We have all watched YouTube highlights reels set to a banging Euro techno beat soundtrack and thought that various spurs linked players looked amazing- only to find that the reality is something more disappointing. There is no shame to admitting being taken in by a highlights reel- we can probably all put our hands up to that鈥︹echno, techno, techno, techno鈥︹.

    • AccringtonSpurs September 27, 2017 at 11:28 am

I thought Aurier’s highlights reel was pretty awful – his play indicated a red card waiting to happen and his crossing left a lot to be desired – on a par with Bonzo’s.

However I think he possess better command of a football than Bonzo. Needs to work on his positioning and iron out the slide tackles. I’m happy to give him time with Poch to improve before writing him off.

    • McG 鈿解毥 September 27, 2017 at 11:43 am

Auriers been more than decent in most games he’s played, shouldn’t have received a red the other day & is adapting to a new manager & different style of play. He works hard & made an outstanding tackle on Sat. It’s way too early for I told you so’s, at the very least, give the lad half a season minimum.

    • Harry Hotspur September 27, 2017 at 12:14 pm

I didn’t bother reading that. You’re probably emotionally drained after the last outburst and I insist on giving people a fair go before redirecting them to a forum that more suits their needs.

  • Ronan September 27, 2017 at 11:13 am

Surprised by your verdict on Winks. Thought he looked in complete command every time he had the ball, making brave, intelligent choices all night.
But Kane is just on a different level in terms of influence. Our entire strategy has to be about presenting him with as many chances as possible, because he will take them like virtually nobody else in the game. (Second only to Messi in 2017 goalscoring stats, according to bt).

  • UnkleTaff September 27, 2017 at 11:12 am

We are currently higher in our domestic league than Real Madrid are in theirs. So long as we play the team they put out on the night as opposed to their reputation I see no reason why we can’t get something out of either (or both) of the games we play against them.

Also, Nicosia are easily capable of nicking at least one draw against Dortmund.

    The bunting goes up tomorrow.

    • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 12:49 pm

Real were fairly lucky against BD – could have gone either way with Ramos lucky not to be sent off

  • VincentianMagic September 27, 2017 at 11:09 am

I thought we were decidedly average last night – but the fact we won 3-0 is a good sign. A few observations from my point of view:

Kane is a greedy so and so at times – but he is also a fantastic finisher so we’ll forgive him; but he can still improve his all-round game (which sounds crazy I know).

Aurier looked out of his depth again, which is twice in a matter of days. I think he is a decent player, but needs to bed in, therefore Trippier should be the #1 RB at the mo.
Poch should work with him on his positioning, which is often poor; and although no slough, he’s no Walker either and as such can’t simply use pace to recover. In essence, he needs to calm down.

Sissy has been ok thus far – not great but not bad either. He makes some decent runs and pulls defenders out of position. With the injuries to Dembele and Wanyama we should be happy to have him around. I would still add Barkley (or similar) in January, but that’s for another discussion.

Lloris is a great shot stopper but is unbelievably slack with his passing at times. He just needs to get rid and stop trying to be be clever.

Think Wink s played ok – he grew into the game and I think he is better suited playing as the more advanced CM.

Trippier is half the player at LB, but there’s no denying his crossing ability on the right.

Alderweireld seems rather quiet and less dominating than in previous seasons – is this due to the arrival of Sanchez, or rumblings behind the scenes a distraction?

Overall, a 6 out of 10 performance, and on another day it could have been 3-3. Once the likes of Dembele, Wanyama, Rose, Lamela, etc are available, we should have some nice problems to consider.

Beat Huddersfield at the weekend and it’s been a good start to the season.

  • BARD September 27, 2017 at 10:44 am

    OrganicPaper
We were so much more comfortable as a 4 man back four. Once Slippy MacSkidetackle went off and Trips took up his actual position, we were a team transformed.
We are obviously getting used to new players and a new system but I think Poch needs to adapt to whats available. That system was never going to work well with those players and against a better opposition we would have been undone.
I actually thought Winks did OK. Grew into the game and IMO didn鈥檛 look out of place. Hugo having some sort of episode again but redeemed himself with a couple of decent saves.
That being Sissoko鈥檚 best performance only really underpins how shite he it. I hope that鈥檚 not the zenith of his season.
A clean sheet and 3 goals away in the CL is a bloody good result though. Apoel are no mugs, who knows, they might snatch a draw against someone at their place and do us a favor

    This.

  • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 10:36 am

Watching last night I thought Son was absolutely useless, being sad I then checked his possession and passing stats which were pretty high – it’s left me very confused as to how they collate these stats as he seemed to lose the ball loads. Was his shittiness just topped up with loads of easy short sideways or backwards passes?

Thought Winks was OK, though so much of their play was direct long ball stuff the midfield was bypassed for much of the match.

Trippier’s strength is his quick passing and crossing, often first time. Having to take the extra touch each time on the left negates much of his game. I think if he had come off rather than Aurier then it would have been the same – really the important thing was getting Davies back on the left side. I didn’t think davies did badly at all at LCB, in fact when Rose returns he may return to play there so Jan can be rested for the odd game , I just think with last night’s personnel he was needed further left to get the team balance right.

  • Spiderneil September 27, 2017 at 10:15 am

Aurier was fine. The reason Trippier looked so much better after the ol’ switcharoo was because he was playing absolutely shite out on the left. All of a sudden he’s playing in his normal position and he’s suddenly better, it stands to reason.

    • mattspurs September 27, 2017 at 10:44 am

Agreed – we simply needed Davies at LB.

  • Ray Milo September 27, 2017 at 10:09 am

Personally I don’t judge a player over a couple of games. Sometimes I give him more than a season before I make my mind up. If he is stuck on the bench for most of the season I might not judge him at all.
Harry Winks is a superb player only just back from a long injury lay off. Out of his depth doesn’t describe him. He is ‘adjusting to a long period out’ and still created some lovely vignettes of play during the game. In time he will be fabulous for Spurs and fully justifies the dozens of scouts that have watched and coveted him since a young age.
I heard a fan that sat close to me in the Paxton describe Son’s play as like Marmite… He can be fantastic one minute or in one game and then dreadful the next… Let’s hope he irons out the dreadful as he matures. A good example was his goal against Fulham last year where he miscontrolled a pass that had Dele shaking his head and then walloped the ball in the net from 30 yards.
The great news is that Poch shuffled his pack, gave some players some valuable experience and playing time and came away with a handsome win….
    What’s not to like?
    Keep the faith! COYS!

  • coys1882 September 27, 2017 at 9:43 am

I would agree that this was Sissoko’s best game in a Spurs shirt. Not just because of his all round play, which was very good, but his work rate was the most that I have seen from him in any game since he came here.

Harry Winks was also excellent. Sort of a Scott Parker lite! With his 360 degree pirouettes and his composure on the ball and willingness and ability to link up the play, which was first rate.

The other player who stood out for me was Davinson Sanchez. Yet another calm and assured performance, but what really impresses me is this kid’s reading of the game, for a 21 year old CB it is outstanding.

As for Harry’s finishing, top drawer. Supremely composed and clinical and like the great man, Jimmy G, he always seems to either find the corner of the net, or roll it just out of the keeper’s reach, which is really the mark of a poacher supreme.

Having said all of that, the scoreline flattered us to be fair. If the shot that rattled our bar at 0-0 had gone in, or the great heading chance from that corner shortly afterwards, we could truly have been in the brown stuff. The first 45 was very poor and the lead flattered us. The second 45 much better, but even then they had their chances. Given the possible goal difference implications, in the group, 3-0 was a very useful scoreline for us.

  • Flynnbob September 27, 2017 at 9:35 am

Winks played ok and the result will do his confidence good which in turn should result in more assured performances.Away from home in the CL to win 0-3 is a great result no matter the opposition. thought Power serge lived up to his name by being powerful in possession and completely uncontrollable out of it .Son was just missing, worst game in a very long time for him, I think son is at his best when his handshake buddy is playing alongside him. Lloris is starting to become a bit of a worry , I really hope we are currently scouting new no1s for next yr or the yr after .
Sanchez class again, sissoko lots of positives and had his best game by far ,hopefully this prolonged run in the team is starting to bear fruit .

Finally Sir Harry Kane, there will still be the ex pros from the so called big four who debate if he’s world class or if he’s the complete striker, the truth is who gives a shit ,we have our best striker in decades and he is dragging arguably our best squad in the last 50years by his coattails .If your to blind to see a absolute beast of a striker in his pre prime then just check out his stats

‘Oven Ready’ Aurier was crap. Yet more ‘brain farts’. Just looks like an Emmanuel Eboue/Pascal Chimbonda clone. PSG sold for a reason- and not because of his comments. He’s just not that good and a serious downgrade on what we had. One for the ‘Eurotrash’ bin. As we found with Bale and Liverpool found with Suarez it is all very well grabbing ‘good’ money but if you waste it you are worse off than went you started. This should be a warning to the knee jerk ‘sell alli’ brigade. Yes he isn’t in top form and he was poor on Saturday but over the course of a full season he will prove his worth- I actually think ultimately he would be better in the Dembele role than his current no 10 advanced position. I can remember certain people on here advocating selling Bale for 拢40M after his inter Milan hat trick as he was ‘over rated’ and didn’t contribute enough- that would have been a super piece of business.

    • Harry Hotspur September 27, 2017 at 9:32 am

      • Trev1978 September 27, 2017 at 9:50 am

He looks like him & plays like him- and that isn’t a compliment. I know you bigged him up before he signed and it might be a bit too soon for you to turn turkey on him. However, the positive ‘spin’ you have put on his last two performances would even embarrass Jeremy Corbyn’s spin doctors- you know the ones that have managed to portray him as a credible politician? He’s been dire- say it like it is. A lot was made of what he won in France. But let’s face it, up until last season France has been a one team league and he happened to be in that one team.

        • Harry Hotspur September 27, 2017 at 10:39 am
