Here’s the insanity of the existing ENIC project in just one transfer rumour.

In this one rumour we have the very essence of stupidity and shortsightedness that encapsulates the way Daniel Levy runs Spurs.

Toby Alderweireld is a Champions League grade player.

At 30, he probably has two or three seasons in him at the very top flight.

The Belgian is much prized asset that would immeasurably boost just about any back four in the country.

Yet Levy for the sake of a few quid extra per week throw the baby out with the bathwater.

You build by winning,

To be in a permanent state of regeneration (oh how the locals in Haringey laughed at that one as you jet set celebrity philanthropist Spurs fans swanned in and out ordering your lattes from a multinational chain that paid the staff minimum wage on zero hour contracts) is merely an exercise in profiteering.

There’s no building underway at all.

Yes, bring in de Ligt. With my blessings. Get him bedded in so when Toby is eventually called the great glue factory in the sky (China) we don’t skip a beat.

Succession management.

Why at Spurs must we endure this wretched Penury Myth™ nonsense?

Toby isn’t expensive.

The truth is we’re currently underpaying him!

Does the same fate await Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane?

Will the same blunt, unthinking revisionism being employed in order to legitimise their sales too?

Is that going to far, how so, if I am only following the corrupted logic you’re seeking to inflict upon the rest of us?

This jam tomorrow cobblers has been exposed for what it is.

In terms of transfer fee value it makes zero sense to sell a player like Toby, because you are not going to get an equal or better player for same value. As you have said Harry, it’s all about the wages. Daniel doesn’t want to pay these guys what they are worth, or even close to it. He would rather bring a bunch of prospects and scrubs in that he can pay on the cheap. It is false economy though, success grows the brand. In the world, from Asia to Africa to the ME and in NZ, the most iconic EPL brands, in no particular order are, Yanited Chelsea Arsenal……. Citeh………………………………….. spurs are way back. What do the other 4 have in common? They have a history of winning stuff over a recent time (within last 15-20 years)

You are selling a 29/30 year old for 40/50 Million and replacing him with a top talent of 18 years old who will still be playing long after Toby has finished. This makes perfect business sense and fits the Tottenham model.
Although I must say that if indeed he has employed Mino Riola as his agent then I cannot see Levy dealing with him.

    • gloster1861 May 17, 2018 at 7:42 am

You are spot on. This is precisely the Levy economic plan. Sell players on for a lot more than paid after having several years good service. Then start again with a younger replacement and repeat, and if criticised for a lack of stability and experience and winning mentality in the squad, play the ‘slowly getting there’ card.

    • Gus May 17, 2018 at 12:13 pm

I agree that we should try to sign the kid. But if we want to push on and win something now, Toby should be kept too.

  • David Dillenberg May 17, 2018 at 7:27 am

When Southgate announces the England captain at a press conference today surely the obvious candidates are either Cahill or Henderson respectively, preferably Henderson but surely not Kane (rumoured to get the dong!) who should simply focus on scoring goals. IMO Kane aint no captain for club and country.

    • David Dillenberg May 17, 2018 at 7:34 am

One player who has disappeared from the scene making no impact at all at Chelski is Danny Drinkwater.

He was a reasonably large fish in a small pond at Leicester.

Yes himself and Kante formed an effective unit.

    • gloster1861 May 17, 2018 at 7:36 am

There is no guarantee Cahill will be a starter over Jones and Stones. Make it Eric Dier!

      • David Dillenberg May 17, 2018 at 7:38 am

Ah yes forgot Erik! but plump for Henderson who would be my choice.

        • gloster1861 May 17, 2018 at 7:47 am

At least Southgate made an exciting choice in preferring the potential of Loftus-Cheek to the lamentable Wilshite.

Catching up of the blogs today. Yes please pulisic! Would be a great signing. Also don’t like the biz with Toby. We are better with him & if we really can’t convince him to stay, don’t sell him to a top 4 rival for a few extra bucks. Would be mind blowingly stupid.

  • ronwol96061 May 16, 2018 at 11:40 pm

    I think its a critical point…
The point is not Poch and probably not Levy.
If Poch is indeed taking a stand. He he saying what he wants for any life he has a Spurs. If its REALLY to compete with the big boys he needs backing or at least someone who will bring him tbe players he expects.
If he is totally there, then I e eally think its Joe Lewis is the only one who can change the paradigm of what is Tottenham buisiness. I mean I really cant see Levy making that decision.
Levy may play brinkmanship or may not care as much..but Joe just might see the opportunity for something he hasnt had.
This us the key for anything to happen.
    Things do change,people change,businesses change.
After the war the japanese flooded the market eith cheap goods and one American business leader..went and gave a speech in Japan that changed them completely to making the best goods in the world.
    One speech.

    • gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 11:49 pm

You’re pinning a lot of hopes in Joe. He’s probably coming over to give Daniel moral support in whatever decision he makes, not to overrule him.

And as he is a big property developer, Joe is coming to inspect the stadium progress at a critical juncture.

More global brand awareness means more shirts sold means more sponsorship interest etc. Case in point is the difference between what Nike pay us and what they pay Chelsea

    • gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 11:42 pm

Unfortunately, as far as the ENIC economic model goes, that doesn’t matter. They have succeeded in turning a 22 million pound investment bought from Alan Sugar, into a stadium worth 1 billion pounds, plus playing staff currently valued at 600 million, plus the Hotspur Way Hotel and Country Club (it could be easily transformed) at another 100 million? Plus shops, offices, hotel under construction, and 237 apartments in the development. Even subtracting the debt of say 500 million, they have made out like bandits.

In their own terms, ENIC have already succeeded. The silverware means nothing.

      • Gus May 16, 2018 at 11:56 pm

        That is fucking depressing

        • Mikespurs May 16, 2018 at 11:57 pm

        • gloster1861 May 17, 2018 at 12:07 am

It’s tragic. All that real estate has been funded with income from football, or debt loaded on the future, and hardly any money has been spent on players in 18 miserable years.

A poster on here had a long argument with me about six months ago that ENIC and Levy ‘haven’t taken a penny piece out of club’. I was dumbfounded how he couldn’t see that ENIC were operating on what psychologists called ‘deferred gratifcation’. That is, delaying their reward to a later date, with the promise of a bigger final layout. They’ve sunk all the money into a development will will make them billions when they do ‘take their pennies out’.

          • gloster1861 May 17, 2018 at 12:08 am

A couple of limestone statues would be best. The piss wouldn’t take long to dissolve them away.

  • legoverlass May 16, 2018 at 10:44 pm

If we sell Toby, Rose, Dembele, Janssen, Wanyama, Nocluedo, Llorente then that will bring in close to £150 million… so the transfer kitty is once again zero investment and just the usual player trading that we have seen for the past 17 barren years. So what risk is Pooch asking Levy to take? A wage hike? Bear in mind Levy will sign all 18 years olds on 17K a week if he can. Quick fag packet maths. We have what I would say is the following elite players. Kane, Eriksen, Dembele, Verts, Lloris, Toby, possibly Son. Ali, Lamela, and Dier have not been consistent enough to be in that group. Trippier, Aurier, Wanyama, Davies, Rose and Moura still have a lot to prove. So that’s 7 players in the elite group. They should all be on £150K per week plus bonus for winning stuff. I reckon that would be an increase of around £25- £30 million per year . Add another two or three quality players to that figure and that will be around £7million on top so say £35 million. How much have we spunked up against the wall by buying absolute kak like Llorente, Sissoko, Janssen, Nocluedo, Nje, Aurier plus a list of others plus their salaries and we have won sweet fa. What would we get from increased sponsorship, income from actually winning something, a full house at the New Destination on a regular basis, merchandising sales through the roof, retention of players so we keep on winning stuff? I guess it must be a challenge for a land developer to get his head around the concept of actually running a top football club.

  • gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 10:17 pm

If Arsenal had won the semi final, they’d be parading the Europa Cup tonight and have achieved Champions League because Marseille were dog shit (how do these dire clubs reach finals?).

They played ten men for 80 minutes in their first leg. They had 76 per cent possession, 28 shots to six, 11 corners to nil. And came away with a draw.

    The arseholes choked.

The gooners are so fecking SPURSY!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

      Not many 5-4ss then!!

  • aristotle May 16, 2018 at 9:40 pm

On a separate issue; Danny Welbeck.

This player has spent 11 seasons plying his trade in the EPL for two of the most successful clubs in the country. He has scored 41 EPL goals in the 195 EPL games he has played in those 11 seasons. That is an average of 3.73 goals, in 17.72 games, for each of the 11 seasons. One goal every 4.58 games.

41 EPL goals in 11 seasons. 11 more than Harry Kane scored this season.

How can this guy have had the career he has had and get picked for the national side at a World Cup?

That’s the way it goes for Kane.

    • SeattleSpursGuy May 16, 2018 at 9:52 pm

Not many choices for England to be fair. And he’s not much of a scoring threat, but OK at holding the ball and decent-ish in the air. In other words a lump to launch the ball at and he might do something with it.

    • SeattleSpursGuy May 16, 2018 at 10:12 pm

Just checked his stats and surprisingly, Welbeck has scored 15 goals in 37 internationals. Without Welbeck, Kane would be the only England player in Russia in double figures for international goals. Makes a bit more sense with that perspective.

Athletico are the perfect Simeone team, they all put in a shift, it ain’t pretty most of the time, some tackles are brutal but the organisation particularly in defence is superb, they have finished in La Liga and i’m not surprised. Wish we were as savvy in Europe. Griezmann is likely off after this but there’s no doubt Simeone made him a much better player.

Is it possible that Levy and Poch already have their plans in place?when you consider what Poch actually said he made the point that he was not expecting ,Levy to go crazy on spending, but wanted investment in the squad,he suggested money from sales plus some extras to improve the Team. I have been thinking for a while that some of the £300m accumulated this year and last from the increased revenues that’s flooding in could have been set aside to make sure the top players are retained, this would allow us to pay what the players deserve. If £40/50m was the required sum i believe Levy is applying psychology by renewing players contracts in a particular order. He has started with two young players one who still has 5 years left on his contract the other one is so delighted to have a future at the club he would have signed anything. Levy will work his way up in increments, after Kane he will then reward himself with a large bonus but before that he would have given Poch a big increase that will be a bench mark of his own rewards , this will result in all the players who signed earlier unable to complain when they realize they have a long contract. Just in case anyone thinks Poch will be going anytime soon he has no Trophies to take into the dressing room of a big club. Imagine players with big egos who are known to tell the club which players to buy he has always hinted that he is in a three year contract. Poch and Levy is a double act. Mr hard and Mr soft.

So you are disregarding Poch even staying with us Aris?
    Look its a gamble ok.
I would say its 60/40 he stays

What you have to ask yourself is; why would Poch want to stay if the best players in this group are sold off over the next few windows?

Poch has built a good reputation by getting Spurs into the CL, 3 seasons running, on an ENIC budget. David Moyes has lived off a worse CV than Poch for a decade and he was given a crack at a top job. The only reason Poch could possibly be persuaded is if Levy makes it financially attractive. But consider this. If Poch stays but the big players are sold the supporters will understand what’s going down. Season ticket renewals will become tricky in season 3 of the ‘new’ project. This would lead to Poch possibly getting the sack and some of the credibility that might get him another top job now.

What if Chelsea make Poch an offer he can’t refuse? He could have the personal rewards, the money to build a winning team, and retain his cred or even add to it.

Sorry Ron. Poch isn’t staying if Levy sells the best players. If Levy gambles this time he is going it alone. I suspect the return of a DOF and head coach personally with multiple player sales over 5 windows.

    • ronwol96061 May 16, 2018 at 7:59 pm

Sorry I thought you already discounted any meeting or negotiating. You seemed to look past that or at least gave it little in the way of legs.
I gave you a figure of 60/40 for Poch winning in this with Levy.
      What your figure?

      • aristotle May 16, 2018 at 8:30 pm

This one is difficult to call Ron is my honest answer. For Poch to stay the top players; Kane, Eriksen, Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Alli would all have to be given a pay rise and parity with the others in this group. Of the 5 Kane, Eriksen and Alli are probably the players Levy would be desperate to retain due to their age. Let’s be honest; the THFC back four has been re-built over the last twelve months. Trippier and Davies have been promoted and Sanchez has been given an interview which he passed. The players most likely to be sold look to be Toby, Danny, Hugo and Jan. My instinct tells me that Levy would use the money from these sales to reward Kane,Eriksen, Alli and Son, who is due for a review, and then use whatever is left to buy more speculative punts / free transfers.

Poch may have knowledge of who is coming and going that has persuaded him to continue for a while. This is a possibility. What is a certainty is that other big clubs will head hunt Poch and offer him anything that Levy would stretch too and more in respect of player transfers.

This is Poch’s moment to have a crack at a top job IMHO. If Levy won’t match the offers made by other clubs then I think Poch will go. He has dropped a few hints to prepare the ground for this. Some are interpreting this as Poch putting pressure on Levy to provide funds and retain players. I am not so sure about that.

        • ronwol96061 May 16, 2018 at 8:35 pm

All true. The only thing is this. I dont think Levy can do this kind of deal. And I dont think He will eant to start again
It will cost him more with little results.
I never ecpected this from Poch but I vant believe will reverse his play unless Joe steps in. I say 60/40 he will

          • aristotle May 16, 2018 at 8:42 pm

If Lewis could be persuaded to bankroll the existing players and bring in some serious squad players; as good as the starting 11, then yes in theory. In reality where is the evidence to suggest that this is a likely scenario? It’s wishful thinking on the part of some of our supporters. These are people who had planning permission for an extra 8000 WHL seats in 2001 but waited 17 years to increase the capacity. Investment in those seats then may have saved Spurs 7-8 years of waiting to get to where we are now.

I can’t see it Ron. Add to that how much harder it has become to stand still because of Man City and I suspect the project has a few more years to reach fruition………maybe

            • ronwol96061 May 16, 2018 at 8:56 pm

Yes I agree it is wishful thonking to a degree but….and its a big but
..its also the best opportunity for Joe Lewis to do so.

              1. Lose Poch and main players

              2. Fans will for sure be disjointed

              3. Opportunity is there NOW

              4. Joe can throw in 100 mil on a giveaway load to ne paid in the distant future..add that to sales of players…Rose,Dembele etc plus 4 or 5 weaker players

Tou have nough to pay the wages and Fortify tbe team

              Joe can do it.

Otherwise if Poch is weak or has no interest we become a glorified Soithampton

              • aristotle May 16, 2018 at 9:17 pm

                I don’t agree Ron.

Regarding point 1. ‘Lose Poch and main players’.

This is exactly what happened when Jol dissented about Berbatov. Jol accepted the sale of Carrick but was sacked when he questioned the sale of Berbatov. Outcome; Jol was sacked Berbatov was sold.

In came Ramos and the stability put in place by Jol and Arnesen was ripped up.

Harry Redknapp was hired and basically reassembled Jol’s team, added Crouch and VDV, Bale and Modric progressed and he excelled Jol. Redknapp claimed he was scouting Tevez in the Ryan Nelson, Louis Saha window. Outcome; Redknapp sacked Modric sold.

In came AVB with his dour football and tank top personality. The flowing football disappeared and Bale was sold.

Poch is just a step on the ladder. Spurs have got a bit closer. ENIC have form and nothing distracts them from the speculative business approach they have employed from day 1.

Getting the players on long term deals is all that matters to ENIC. The hostage situation develops and the ransom is always paid.

                • ronwol96061 May 16, 2018 at 10:35 pm

Again you are right…but also you thought the stadium would be built. This point isnt about you at all. But maybe something changed. No not the transfer policy but they looked to the future with this. (Maybe it didnt too) and the other thing was Poch’s getting things done and the real posibility something can be acheived bigger.

If they disregard the opportunity to grow, fine. But there maybe something there.

  • Paddio May 16, 2018 at 7:27 pm

Pochs post match is a blinder with so much speculation. This is pochs focus on his own development rather than individual players in the team. He know the next few years will be the ones that defines if he goes into the group of super managers or just managers who had a decent run at one time

  • aristotle May 16, 2018 at 5:54 pm

Spurs were always going to arrive at this crossroads. Spurs have a team, (first 11 + one or two others) that are capable of challenging for trophies. Because the very best players are not getting the going rate this makes Spurs current group vulnerable to being approached. What compounds this is that Spurs have a chairman that has succeeded in getting Spurs to this point by selling the best players.

For me it is simple. If Levy doesn’t retain the top players in this group by paying them the going rate the manager and the very best players will leave in the not too distant future. It will be a slow death if the player sales are done gradually but a backward step has punctuated all of Levy’s previous re-inventions.

Order out of chaos I believe they call it. I expect a wank manager next who will be the fall guy for the inevitable player sales.

HH – this is one of your best written articles this year.

There is one other major concern I dont think anyone has raised yet, and that is the Toby situation unsettling Verts. Jan is not far behind Toby in talent and is also way underpaid (less than £90k/wk ). Toby has all summer playing with Jan to convince him how much more he can make by playing elsewhere. Losing them both would cripple Spurs for years, and if Jan joined Toby it would instantly give their new club the best central pairing in the world.

If that revelation is true – that the highest basic wage any PL defender is receiving is 124k, might it change the situation?

    • Lilywhite without the ll May 16, 2018 at 8:27 pm

Levy knows once pandora’s box is opened it will cost him a small fortune….of course the other way to look at it is he’s been saving a bucket load of cash over the years by not paying the going rate….

About 10% of people are left handed/footed. 20 teams in the Premier League, so more than 2 of the keepers should be lefties if your theory is right. If you can be arsed to look them all up. 🙂

Personally I don’t see how leftiness can affect your ability to be a goalkeeper. Loftiness, yes.

Personally i would like to know the way Levy Adds up his Sums, Toby was Brought for 12m in 2015 Earning a reported 75k per week, over a three years this Adds up to around 23m all in which is equal to 7.5m per annum. If we signed a new player at 40 million plus 75k per week and this player walks away at end of 4 year contract having taken the best part of two years to show anything near his best this Adds up to 13.75m per annum. What i am saying is that the Logical conclusion should be we either make a deal that’s attractive to him or we keep him another year so we can move into our new stadium with a solid defence. This would also give us more options in other areas regarding finances .The 25m we would get for him after another year works out well when you consider the service he has given us.

If Toby is to be sold, Levy/Poch cannot repeat the Walker mistake of selling to another top 4 team. It’s like when Arse sold Van Persie to ManU. Fergie won the title and everyone knew Arse were not serious competitors

Good example. Yes, van Persie was part of the last competitive Arsenal side.

We live in a post-truth world. If there are no facts to suit your narrative, just make them up because a good chunk of your audience will believe it. So I fully expect Toby to be cast as an aging, greedy mercenary with a bad attitude and waning skills. Praise be to Levy for saving Spurs from this cancer!

    Eh? I’ve stood by Toby!

Not you, H. But I expect stories like I described to dibble out from the club. And quite a few fans will go along

        Ah, gotcha!

You’ve missed them on here then – good for you – the revisionism on TA has been appalling.

Precisely as you suggested, fat, greedy, crocked etc…

        Heartbreakingly poor calls from some.

We’ve got no proof of what Toby’s demands are… if it is a simple case of wanting to match the wages of our highest earners then I believe the deal would have already been done. If Toby really wanted to commit to Spurs long-term then again I believe a deal would have already been done. So to my mind I think this goes beyond saying Levy should just pay Toby what he wants, because I think what Toby wants are trophies and he wants to put himself in the transfer window for bigger trophy-competitive clubs to make him offers. The wages are secondary, but inherently he will end up getting paid more if he goes to any of those bigger clubs anyway.

I reckon the only prospect of keeping top players like Toby is not just to pay them something close to market rate, but also to show our financial commitment to Poch that we will spend big on transfers to chase silverware

If as quoted Toby is on 50K a week then that’s just dreadful, and even if Levy gave him the 130 or so a week that he wants then I’m sure that Kane isn’t far behind and can be brought in line pronto, and also the same with others who command that (Loris, Alli, Erikson). the club have made so much money from their Champions league run/league position/TV revenues, so i do not see what the issue is with paying the players who made that all possible, to keep them at the club in order to make it continue so. I’m confused as arseholes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toby was AS important to the side as Kane.

Some say Davinson is great – he has slotted in seamlessly. I’m sure he will get better in time, and he has been good, but Toby was largely infallible.

We’ve gone from the best defence in the league to worse than the best defence in the league.

Agreed 100%. And, when Toby was on the pitch he inspired confidence, was a leader, should have been our captain. these are things that are more than just about the defending. Against Real Madrid at Wembley, he was a rock at the back and injured himself making a buccaneering run up the other end to try and score..
