Eriksen: Wheels In Motion

By The Boy -

A few days ago the Harry Hotspur blog ran an ITK piece suggesting that Christian Eriksen was of a mind to quit Spurs.

Tottenham have made several attempts to tie the Dane down for a further extension of his contract, but without success.

In fact, one wouldn’t be taking a wild leap in suggesting that once Harry Kane’s improved deal was in the public domain, most players felt they too could get killer deals.

Spanish outlet AS are confident wheels are in motion and that Real Madrid want to sign the Middelfart born boy.

The grim reality is that for all the club’s delight at the new stadium, there is a decided reticence from the players to sing from the same hymn sheet.

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have only accepted bare minimum terms that would at best only see them both play one whole season at the new venue.

Given that this shopping centre is being touted as a footballing panacea, who aren’t all the players climbing over each other for long term deals? Why aren’t Spurs constantly linked with top of the range players?

We all support tbe team. It’s the regime many don’t support.

I really can’t understand what it is you see in the owners that you feel they are interested in winning things. What is it they’re doing that makes you think that ?

Stop worrying about player contracts and signing new players? Are you kidding me? That’s what supporters do because they want to see their team win things and grow. The reason this team is performing so well is because Levy lucked out when he found Poch who has worked miracles with a limited budget. What Poch, the players and fans now want is to build on the current platform and that means keeping the best talent and bringing in reinforcements where necessary, both of which require investment. Lewis has made it clear he will not invest in new players so the concern expressed by most of us here is how the current level of performane is going to be sustained let alone improved upon. For sure some players are going to leave because they have ambitions to play elsewhere, particularly Spain, so it becomes necessary to pro-actively find replacements of at least equal caliber. That does not happen by last minute bargain basement shopping, it comes through proper target identification and early negotiation with target clubs and agents. That’s what the top competition does as demonstrated by Chelsea in this window. So good luck to you if you are content to enjoy what you have while you have it but don’t patronize those of us who would like to see evidence of a club that really wants to build a sustainable legacy on the pitch rather than in concrete.

The “golden” generation will not be remembered beyond those that lived it. Much like England in the 70’s and 80’s. Many of us only remember the England team of the 90’s because of Italia 90, bet most didn’t even remember which players failed us in the lead up to 94. The golden generation, much like this Spurs crop, will be a footnote in history, reserved for those that watched it. We were better than the teams that won the leagues (Leicester and Chelsea) but we didn’t win only we will remember that.

The shoe string being the lowest net spend in the league. Let’s look at Liverpool. Here’s a club topping the PL they identified where they needed to strengthen and invested in doing so. By comparison, we sold the best RB in the league and replaced him with a player who couldn’t get a game whist that same RB was wearing our shirt.

We’re now in a situation where our two best CH’s are looking at the exit and our best attacking / playmaker is also looking at that same exit.

Our owners, no matter how you dress it up aren’t interested in winning things. The fact you mentioned finishing top 4 just for the CL money is further proof the business model is flawed.

There are far too many glass half empty people around, so Chris I’m pleased that you think this is the best team in your watching lifetime. Sadly for all but the top 2 or 3 clubs in the world can’t stop their players wanting to go to bigger teams, so we have to be thankful for where we are and what we have with such an exciting team and an incredible manager. Let’s stop worrying about factors we have no control over (like player contracts and signing new players) and focus on what is in our control which is enjoying the excellent football we play and supporting the team as we fight for four trophies this season!

why do you guys keep saying “on a shoe string” or “need investment”… we are investing (bar this summer) we average £70-90m a season on transfers in. Yes its offset, but that is more than enough to buy a good player. Issue is we would rather buy 5 players for that money than 1 or 2 in the hope that 1 will make and we can flog the rest to break even. Its not about the money, its about the attitude. The owners don’t care what we win, just as long as we are near enough to the top to always be considered and into the rich swimming pool that is the CL. Over the past 4yrs we have averaged out as the best team in England…sadly, due to the way we operate that is making us a whole lot of “yellow” (points for anyone that can get the really obscure TV reference that makes “yellow” make sense. lol).

Spot on. I cannot believe for a minute that the money is not there to A) Pay our current players the going rate, and B) buy ‘Some’ quality to take the team to the next level. I sometimes feel like we are somewhat like when the National team had the ‘Golden Generation’ and did absolutely nothing. People in 20 years time will be saying that this is the best team they ever watched, yet we will not have won a dickie bird !

I totally agree with you Wig, but my point is the team moving to the ‘Top Tier’, and selling our best players is not going to help in achieving that goal. Maybe, yes, RM may be the dream destination for players like Eriksen, and I agree that we have sold players in the past that we prefer to have kept, but the crux of my point is that every time we look like we may take the ‘Next Step, something happens to sabotage that.
And also in agreement that we have progressed from mid-table medioctirty, and also think this is the best team in my ‘Watching Lifetime’ !!

We have an owner who doesn’t give a fuck about the club and a chairman who runs the club like its his personal fiefdom. If he was any good at it that would be fine given the fact he’s grossly messed up the stadium which will impact on the team means he really should be binned. When poch and several of our underpaid players leave in the summer little Danny boy may be facing some well deserved fan abuse.

Good piece but you write “that we are not at the highest level yet and that will only come from winning multiple trophies”. If you continually sell your best players, you are going to make it very difficult to win multiple trophies, as we have seen during Levy’s reign. Perhaps fewer dividends to Joe Lewis and more investment in the playing staff might have produced the trophies that dictate the success of any club.

Having been a regular since the 90s I wonder if you and I have been watching the same team, as we have been going in the right direction throughout this period. I clearly remember our mid-table bullshit before the time of Jol, Redknapp and Poch in which each consecutive era has seen improvement. Sadly without an oil billionaire owner we haven’t been able to finance a leap into the very top tier just yet, but through the past couple decades we have seen top players go that we would rather have kept – Carrick, Berba, Modric, Bale – and regardless we have continued to grow in our own way.

Now I would be gutted to lose Eriksen, but by all accounts it’s got nothing to do with money as he has a very lucrative new contract offer, it’s his dream to play for Real. That shouldn’t be a disservice to Spurs, nor disrespect to how Spurs management have treated him, but pure and simple he is an ambitious young man who dreams of playing at the highest level. Unfortunately we are not the highest level yet, and that will only come through winning multiple trophies… Right now we have a semifinal tomorrow, through the next round of the FA and champions league, and 6 points off the league summit, so in my view we are heading in that right direction

ENIC’s formula works for them but not in the terms of building teams, we’ve had to live on this for 2 decades now so no one should expect their going to turn over a new leaf nor should we expect levy to squander a 100 mill should erickson decides in replacing him of equal status.

history tells us, sold berba and in return levy got us frazer cambell-insult in player and NAME
Sold moders got no one in return.

All valid questions, and issues some of us have warned about on here for a long, long while. Its a con job.
Off topic I watched a bit of that 6 a side international thing that Sky did. It was funny, even in 6’s tournaments it was sideways and backwards. It took them over a minute to have a shot!? On a 6’s pitch!? I did a little experiment and watched a classic Guinness soccer six match at random from 1987….. There was a shot and a goal within 10 seconds. Football has gone to hades. On and off the pitch.

Toby and Jan have both had a 1 year option triggered by Tottenham as I understand things.Toby could be sold for 25M before the last two weeks of this summer’s transfer window.Has anyone seen a figure placed on Jan if their situations are the same?Or maybe they’re not.
If they were to both go this summer it would be a disaster.

I think the players were “willing” to be part of the opening ceremony this season, but were never fully sold on long term future at Spurs, then the lack of transfer activity has made them realise that at most they will only win the odd trophy, and at a time when a little bit could have been enough (as we are proving, 2nd with 0 investment, imagine what £60m on a player like Mahrez could have done, or top draw central midfielder so we didn’t need to use Winks and Sissoko all the time). The players are not stupid, their agents less so, they know their worth, but its about more than money (I think especially at Eriksen age), its about silverware now, you cant be that good and win nothing! As Bale proved (and countless before him) one season at a club that puts football top of its money making agenda and you win more silverware than 2 decades at Spurs.

Why on earth can this football club not seem to go in the ‘Right’ direction for a change. Since i have been going to watch them: letting Burkinshaw walk when we were on the cusp, sacking Venables when he was creating a real force, not backing Harry Redknapp when we had a chance. I am seeing the pattern lately, introducing kids to give them game time before the stars sod off… After letting Kane go, in my humble Opinion Eriksen would be the next biggest disaster..

100 mil for Tin tin from RM but you doubt they’ll pay it? I tell you what, i’ll give you odds of 3-1 it will be more than 100mil. Any amount you care to place we can put it in the escrow account of Harry’s choosing.

Why do you have little doubt money from his sale would be made available? Did you also have little doubt we would buy at least one player in the Summer?

You could see a strong set-up if Dembele, Wanyama, Dier and Lucas were fit. Have you even watched those four names over the end of last season into this? Dier has just about been our worst player and is regressing at speed, closely followed by Wanyama. Dembele is an ex-parrot and Moura(less) is the classic Levy smoke and mirrors buy who always gets found out at a high level. These are not names to create any sort of future with, secure top four with, win something or even secure a top sponsorship deal. Tin Tin, Tobes, Verts, Ali and HK are capable of that if properly supported with quality (££’s) but i’m sure you’d sell them ‘like a light’ too.

I believe that is what we have done (from reading comments on multiple forums). I think the difference between the Spurs and Liverpool situations are that Liverpool already had a ready made setup to survive the loss, Spurs do not have anyone to cover the loss of Eriksen. Secondly, and most importantly, Liverpool had owners that concentrated on players on the pitch.

I think £100m plus Isco would be good. I am not aware Eriksen has been offered anything close to Kane, but I agree with your sentiment, I think this has is far more to do with footballing reasons than pay ones – in which case I am happy to bid him good luck as there is nothing we can do. Even if we win the league and the CL it wouldn’t make us consistent cup winners like Real are or City have turned into. It will take years of shrewd investment – Which I am sure all on here can agree our chairman is more than capable of… ahem…:)

If Eriksen has been offered pay parity with Kane, and he still won’t sign a new contract then I’m not sure what can prevent him from joining Real Madrid, who he has his heart set on. The only loyal people in football are the fans, and that has always been the case (with the exception of one or two players of course). But if we do sell him for 100 million then we should spend that amount on someone equally as good (Isco?). If we just buy more cheese I’ll pass wind in Levy’s direction

I think the fair resolution to the Christian Erikssen contract situation is as follows. He should be offered the same as Harry Kane, widely reported as 200,000 pounds per week. That would validate his status as a star player and would be at the upper limit of the clubs wage structure. If he is unwilling to sign a new contract under those circumstances, then Levy has little choice but to sell and get the best price that he can for him. Selling Coutinho under similar circumstances, where the player sought to move, worked out very well for Liverpool and the funds were invested successfully, to the overall betterment of the team. Hopefully we can achieve a similar outcome.

Not in my opinion. I’d sell him for 100m like a light. I very much doubt Real Madrid will fork out that amount at any rate. Eriksen is undoubtedly a very fine and classy football player. His biggest problem is inconsistency. He can disapppear too often in too many games. He obviously wants to go should Real Madrid want him. Tottenham have a fine manager and Levy is not about to lose that asset because of not affording him the money to buy players the manager feels he needs. The money for Eriksen will I have little doubt be made available to bring in new faces. Were Dembele, Wanyama, Dier and Lucas not all out and were fully fit, I could see very a strong Tottenham setup available. Lamela back again is a big bonus too.
