Gladys has just returned from a Tea Urn ExPo in sun-kissed Gstaad where she rubbed shoulders (among other things) with some of the highest high rollers in the finance world. One chap she spoke to had just a few weeks previously set up a meeting between a client and a man by the name of Joe Lewis.
Glad asked him how much ENIC wanted for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, and ‘was it £2billion?!’
The reply was: “Not quite, but it was close enough to the number that the client had in his mind before they met.”
What this tells us that yes there is a ‘magic number’ and yes, it is for sale. A cynic would leap in at this point of course and tell us all that everything has its price, but what is new here is that it means that there is hope. Levy isn’t absolutely destined to shuffle off this mortal coil wearing a poly-mix suit with a Chicken Badge on the chest pocket.
There is hope. That someone who might want to build a football team could still take over.
Another snippet from that boat trip was that AIA could potentially going to be involved for some time. They looked at a few London clubs before finally deciding on Spurs and feel they made a very good choice. However one amusing anecdote shared was that despite a blossoming relationship between the club and the sponsor, our chairman had stood firm and AIA were still only allowed the one complimentary box as part of the package. Numerous gentle overtures had fallen upon stoney ground.
