The Daily Star just like the rest of us haven’t missed the opportunity to point out that Daniel Levy has been publicly branded a skinflint ever since Mauricio Pochettino quite rightly called his CEO out in front of the world’s press after our last game of the season.

Jack Staplehurst for the Star says that Toby Alderweireld is currently on a measly £50,000 a week and that Tottenham Hotspur’s unwillingness to pay him market rate has left Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho confident he can land the Belgian international.

The Evening Standard say that Jose Mourinho has the vision that Spurs appear to lack and would offer the 29 year old precisely the type of deal a player of his stature demands and deserves.

It is no surprise – just a relief – that Pochettino has spoken up and wants to unchain the club and its supporters from this Penury Myth™.

To be paying Toby the reported £50,000 pwk is nothing shy of lamentable.

Shake your head, Levy.

I don’t care how much they earn ,then again, imaginary micro managing of football teams isn’t my thing.

  • Caveman May 16, 2018 at 7:32 am

Rose is crawling, making sure he’s on the plane to Russia. Hes also licking up to Poch. I say sell him. What he did with the Scum newspaper was and still is unforgivable.

    • Gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 7:35 am

Sell him before or after the World Cup? That’s the teaser. His value might go up if tubby has a decent tournament.

      • Caveman May 16, 2018 at 7:37 am

I’d wait and take our chances.

        • gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 8:42 am

Except that Pochettino wants Levy to shift the outgoing players asap and get the targets in pronto.

Still feel that Janssen isn’t as poor as it appears. He came into the side when quite a few of our midfield players were having bad runs of form, notably Eriksen, the mainspring of the team. That was unfortunate. Since then he’s had no chances to redeem himself.

          • East Stand May 16, 2018 at 8:48 am

Rose also said that he’ll never forget how mean the supporters were to him back when he was shit, before he was ‘Poched-up’ into a decent player. Twat.

I’d say let him go to the WC first and if he has a decent tournament the greedy fuck can be moved on for more money than you’d get now. He’s had a nothing season.

        • DAVID May 16, 2018 at 8:42 am

Me too, still think there’s a half decent player there, would be galling if he returned to form and fitness after we sold him on the cheap.

          • East Stand May 16, 2018 at 8:57 am

Perhaps he’d want to stay if Poch gets an increase in budget?

Thing is with Poch is, once someone goes rogue and goes against the positive energy he likes to create around the team then they are forever sullied by that. Poch likes to trust his players and vice versa, there probably is no way back for him at Spurs.

My theory is that he might not have been training hard enough this season either, another reason why he’s hardly played.

He’s going to be 28 in a month or two, he wants that one ‘big’ contract left in him and whatever Daniel the baldy is told to do by Uncle Joe, Rose probably won’t be staying.

Our ONLY problem is if we again attempt to replace him with dysfunctional trash like Aurier….

  • Gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 7:22 am

    For Accy.

Is the shirt number 17 cursed?

    Moussa Sissoko
    since 16/17
    Andros Townsend (13/14 – 15/16), Giovani dos Santos (08/09 – 11/12), Eidur Gudjohnsen (09/10), Chris Gunter (08/09), Paul Stalteri (07/08), Kevin-Prince Boateng (07/08), Márton Fülöp Goalkeeper (06/07), Ben Alnwick Goalkeeper (06/07), Noé Pamarot (04/05 – 05/06), Mark Yeates (02/03 – 03/04), Öyvind Leonhardsen (99/00 – 01/02), John Scales (96/97 – 98/99), Andy Turner (93/94)

The shirt number is the equivalent of the understairs cupboard.

    • Harry Hotspur May 16, 2018 at 7:48 am

      Ouch!

    • Accy May 16, 2018 at 8:40 am

      Haha!

    • East Stand May 16, 2018 at 9:00 am

Out of that lot only Gudjohnsen and Leonhardsen were fit for purpose but that is otherwise a bit of rogues gallery!!

  • MiT May 16, 2018 at 4:33 am

    I think Toby goes.

If Spurs are going to book in 100k+ over a 3 or 4 year term, they certainly are not going to start proceedings with an age 29 who struggled with injury this season, who will be well in the 30s before the end of the commitment, and without whom Spurs still managed to do well.

I just don’t see that happening.

    • MiT May 16, 2018 at 4:36 am

I think Poch identifies a younger player in whom to invest that sort of commitment. His discussion with Levy will be over the quality brought in, and the salaries paid to keep the ones worth keeping long term.

      • Gloster1861 May 16, 2018 at 7:26 am

He’s had an injury this season, but has been fine up till this point. We don’t know if we’d have got further, say beating Juventus, with Toby in the team. Conjecture.

  • poxy May 16, 2018 at 2:19 am

Yes, you’re spot on in the video- don’t know how Poch has managed to get us into 3rd this year, especially with the predictably slow start at Wembley. And to his credit, he has spoken out but done it respectfully! He is a man of respect from what I gather.

  • Finn May 16, 2018 at 2:15 am

Before we start looking at new blood we need to ensure we secure the talent we already have and I’m guessing that the first hurdle for Poch is to get an agreement for a new wage structure to secure those who stay, determine who needs replacing and figuring out how much we can offer replacements.

There were reports that they wanted to do deals with Harry and Dele first to re-set the bar, then accommodate Toby in a revised wage structure. It was suggested (at the time) that this would be at the end of the season, once Champions League had been confirmed. There were also some reports that suggested that Toby’s demands were (in the context of THFC), pretty outrageous but what is the cost of replacing like for like: how do you replace arguably one of the best two or three central defenders in England and how outrageous will that be?

Levy has relied on transferring in potential which either works out, is flipped (or both). But we are at the top table now and we can’t waste points accommodating the Auriers and the Clinton Cards’ of the world: we need to be able to both buy top four standard players to fit into a top four team and retain our existing top four players and then have THAT dynamic supported by youth/potential.

At this point there is nothing that is inconsistent with those earlier reports (above), however it’s not hard to envisage a situation what with a World Cup and a revised transfer window, where players are getting anxy, which they are conveying to Poch and he in turn is rattling a few sabres to escalate the urgency of the situation – essentially saying, ‘if we can’t start using a bit of gorm, I’m not going to carry the can’.

Poch has set the tone for the Joe/Levy pow-wow by publicly stating that the “project” is ahead of schedule and the goals needs to be redefined: this stance also defines that those goals need to be agreed by HIM. His negotiating stance (and this is what this is – a negotiation) has been set out with what I suspect is deliberately opaque comments (thinly guised in deniability as a non-native English speaker), but laying out that an impasse is not acceptable to him.

Will he go? I doubt it – Levy/Joe will come up with a package deal of wages/war chest plus appeal to his Poch’s pocket through a new deal. Will Toby go? More likely than not, but there is no hurdle to him staying and he’s been very careful with tweets etc. not to burn any bridges.

  • poxy May 16, 2018 at 2:03 am

In reference to what I have just said about experienced winners, of course we don’t know for sure if Poch could handle such players as he has been used to working with young impressionable players.

  • poxy May 16, 2018 at 1:43 am

The trouble is that we are so mired in debt because Enic chose to put up a glorified shopping mall at enormous expense instead of just expanding the old White Hart Lane by 10,000 or so; it could be several generations before we’re on an even keel and by then the “big 5” (I don’t include us in a “big 6” because we’ve only won a league cup in the last 19 seasons) may have decamped to a European League! Such a league, which our clubs might not join (because of the huge success of the Premiership),but probably will because how else are they going to play against the finest teams on the continent, is surely coming because of the tedious predictability of the major leagues with Bayern and PSG currently winning their leagues EVERY year and NOW, Juventus winning the Italian League for an unprecedented seventh year running.

  • melcyid May 16, 2018 at 12:07 am

    Levy is not a people person,he is a businessman.most of them arn’t

    • Caveman May 16, 2018 at 1:09 am

Hes no businessman. Hes a leech, a worm and if slavery was legal he would be the master slave master. Hes unsuitable as chairman of a football club where winning is meant to be the end product not profit.

      • poxy May 16, 2018 at 1:54 am

If we can’t afford the wages to retain the services of our best players because we have spent too much money elsewhere (ie on an unsuitably extravagant stadium that promises to be a millstone round our necks for years), is he really that good a businessman? But then, their aims are a successful business and not necessarily a successful team on the field, though an unsuccessful team, and consequently a disillusioned support, isn’t going to help them to achieve their business aims in the long term, but I suppose they will have gone off into the sunset with a huge wedge of cash before things really go downhill.

        • Caveman May 16, 2018 at 1:58 am

          The sooner the better Poxy.

  • caveman May 16, 2018 at 12:04 am

Somethings up when Levy is throwing new contracts about like confetti. I reckon he’s trying to appease Poch by signing the players Poch wants to keep. Let Toby be the next with a four year contract with the option of another year and the captaincy. Sell N’Koudo Sissoko Janssen Llourento Aurier and Vorm and sign up ‘ready to play players’ so we can be serious contenders for the Premiership and the UCL.

    • gus May 16, 2018 at 12:20 am

That would be a strong start

    • poxy May 16, 2018 at 1:59 am

We’re crying out for a couple of marquee signings who are used to winning big tournaments and who will inspire the other players and kick a few backsides when it’s merited. It’s no secret that we lack a real leader or two.

  • Accy May 15, 2018 at 11:20 pm

Comment from HYS (have your say) in reply to someone re: England World Cup – You’re being biased. This is England here. The sad fact for you is that most people would rather watch Spurs than Arsenal. I’m a bloody Leeds fan and I truly believe Spurs are more entertaining than Arsenal. The stats say Spurs are better, and sadly for you, there’s no arguing that.

  • Superspoz 🐰 May 15, 2018 at 9:54 pm

You can only get a few goals on the last day when everyone’s got heat stroke nowadays. Seen some blinding play offs, Villa and Boro managed 1 goal in nearly 3 hours. Pulis fails to score at home, they have to score , his tactics are wretched..he just put a right back on. Bollox football

Something has been haunting me for a while: Wanyama earning very roughly 3/4ths of Erisksen’s wages who earns roughly 3/4ths of Kane’s wages…yet Eriksen has admitted that he gets confident to push on up when Wanyama is behind him and thus provides an endless supply of assists that have made Kane king….

This set-up sucks! I think the starting 11 plus 2 tactical subs should all be on 125K flat and anything over and above that should be calculated on bonuses and say…% shirt sales…..

While I agree that footballers earn obscene wages, It always surprises me a bit how upset people get over that. Mark Wahlberg got $68M in 2017 for making his shitty movies and nobody blinks an eye.

    • James147 May 15, 2018 at 9:29 pm

Great point that. You can be annoyed at the inequality of the whole system, but makes no sense to be annoyed at just one part of it.

    • Gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 9:29 pm

And God knows how much Ed Sheeran earns for his bland tunes and cheery disposition.

  • James147 May 15, 2018 at 9:16 pm

No point bitching about players’ wages in a general sense. Earning even £10k a week is obscene, while the rest of us struggle. But that’s capitalism. The market dictates what people earn.

We the punters are giving the clubs this cash by the bucket load, mainly in the form of ridiculously expensive TV subscriptions. If a club doesn’t pay the going rate in wages, players move on and the team suffers.

    • Gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 9:19 pm

Sorry James. The wages are stupid but as a professional athlete you have at best a few years to earn a lifetime of wages. Not everyone gets coaching badges or is a pudnant. Ill struggle in my own ways but in no way am I jealous of somebody that kicks a ball good for a few years.

Since we are on a NFL kick for our new stadium. 4 years to make your pension, average for an NFL player maybe 2. Most those players go broke before theyre 30 with no real education to do anything after sports. You grab what ya can when ya can. I’ll never fault a player trying to get a better contract

I mean, how the hell does somebody manage to survive on a measly 50k per week training 8 hours a week, playing maybe 2 games per week or 50 games a calendar year, but recently none and earning such a shit wage?

God forbid he should get a proper fucking job and try to survive on less than half his weekly wage per YEAR.

I mean, over £2.5 million per year?

    A mere pittance.

    • Blackfish May 15, 2018 at 9:06 pm

I understand what you are saying as we f*ck up our mind with stress and all other stuff and earn in a year what he is earning in a week.

But you have to compare his wages in his profession. It is peanuts for the player of his caliber.

      • Still Nil Nil May 15, 2018 at 9:08 pm

I think prem players wages are obscene and vulgar

If you started professional football today and said that in the top leagues the players will earn the equivalent of the average persons yearly wage in three days for kicking a football about you’d be told to fuck off and called a retard…

    • James147 May 15, 2018 at 9:08 pm

It’s all relative. People want to be paid the market rate, what they’re worth. Of course ego comes into too. Maybe Toby just wants to leave and has deliberately priced himself out of a new deal.

      • Ahole May 15, 2018 at 9:08 pm

        He does

    • Ahole May 15, 2018 at 9:08 pm

I can tell you it’s a struggle. Sometimes I don’t have enough left at the end of the month to buy a measly Fabergé egg to call my own! I have to slum it and just console myself with a pair of alligator skin Tom Ford loafers. And they don’t leave much change out of ten grand these days.

“The club need to take risks” or, speculate to accumulate…

This isn’t alien speak, this isn’t a dispatch from a lunatic asylum. It’s what progressive ambitions businesses have to do every fucking day.

If DanielENICUncleJoe & Co can’t get their heads around that and do it then they are utterly dysfunctional and in the wrong ‘business’.

Running a business is about your strategy and where you are going. If our illustrious owners actually want to go somewhere then they will back Poch fully.

The ‘Leeds’ argument is NOT relevant to Spurs these days and never had it been.

Total defeat for the flat earthers, who lets face it were mainly brainwashed by ENIC’s hopeless PR machine. I wouldn’t mind if their PR was convincing.

It stopped being about 10 years ago when they sold Berba and Keane and bought Pav and Bent, sold Carrick and bought Zokora the summer or so before that.

    The truth is out!!

    • Ahole May 15, 2018 at 9:09 pm

They took a risk on 107 million and fucked it up

      • East Stand May 15, 2018 at 9:14 pm

        When was that?

        • Gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 9:17 pm

I assume this is the famous seven. We actually sold 124 million that summer and spent a theoretical 107, but the actual amount was no where near that.

          • ronwol96061 May 15, 2018 at 9:45 pm

            Its their business.
They are entitled to run it the way they want.
Poch is our Gladiator. He has the power to change it.
            Its not them its Poch.
He started now he has to finish it

            • East Stand May 15, 2018 at 10:00 pm

Ron it’s their business but it’s not their football club.

Without the supporters it ceases to be. The excuse that it’s ‘theirs’ doesn’t really stand up for me…

  • SeattleSpursGuy May 15, 2018 at 9:00 pm

Correct me if I’m forgetting something, but the only–ONLY–time I can recall Levy putting additional money into the team was the 2008-2009 season in January. Why? “2 points, 8 games” and being over a barrel with Redknapp. And who did we buy:

Jermain Defoe £9,000,000; Wilson Palacios £12,000,000; Carlo Cudicini England Free; Pascal Chimbonda £4,500,000; Robbie Keane £12,000,000.

So that’s 37.5 million to get out of trouble. All told, we had about 79 million in sales against 105 million in buys. So that’s 25 million Levy put in under the extreme duress of possible relegation.

    • Gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 9:05 pm

Yes that’s right. Since that time his wallet has been cryogenically frozen.
Any info on whether Joe Lewis was actively involved in those spending decisions in that January window?

      • SeattleSpursGuy May 15, 2018 at 9:11 pm

Never heard one way or another about Joe’s involvement.

      • East Stand May 15, 2018 at 9:20 pm

He only did that after he hired Redknapp because of the disastrous transfer dealings under Comedy… er sorry I mean Comolli.

We were looking relegation fodder after the summer of Comolli’s pissing about.

Levy realized he’d pushed his luck too far and that he’d dropped a bollock.

He took the League Cup win as a signal to sell off the team. He’d thrown the faithful a few scraps with the League Cup. They’d be happy for another few decades…

  • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? May 15, 2018 at 8:54 pm

  • MiT May 15, 2018 at 8:49 pm

The one shining light in all of this is that Levy is yet to tie up naming rights for the stadium and any bad PR could reduce the value of this deal. For this reason above all else, he may need to blow off the cobwebs from the coffers and speculate to accumulate.

    • MiT May 15, 2018 at 8:22 pm

Oof, good point there to be considered.

    • JimNewrySpur. May 15, 2018 at 8:22 pm

He’s never done it to date, can’t see him changing, remember all those January windows where we needed a couple of decent signings to get CL football, never happened.

  • JimNewrySpur. May 15, 2018 at 8:16 pm

Fancy City over Utd for Toby, Kompany in worse shape than Ledley, Stones what is he for, reunited with Bonzer, he’s 29 he deserves one last big contract to set him up, good luck to him.

  • Sexy Beast May 15, 2018 at 8:05 pm

Levy is not a stupid man he can surely see that Pooch is a once in a lifetime manager, let him slip through his fingers and the cash registers won’t be anywhere near as full in the long term. This alone will sharpen his focus into wanting to placate Pooch, the fans backlash will create a very toxic Mothership.

    • Sexy Beast May 15, 2018 at 8:06 pm

      *would

    • JimNewrySpur. May 15, 2018 at 8:17 pm

      • Gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 8:24 pm

        He transcends normal thought processes.
Levy is one with the stadium. He is the stadium. Ommmm. 😶

          The Titanic arena, superb!

  • MiT May 15, 2018 at 7:54 pm

I would not be surprised to see Daniel Levy stall this until the Champions League final.

That’s a gamble. If Liverpool wins the final, then there is a good chance that Madrid will be coming heavily for Poch. They will do that knowing that there are several very very good Spurs players that will soon follow.

It is Daniel Levy’s prerogative to let Poch go, and then to pay off a lot of debt by letting the good players go who wish to follow.

However, it’s also my prerogative to then put Spurs fully aside until enic is gone. There are other leagues to which I can easily switch my attention with no disloyalty to Spurs.

I suspect that this man believes that he is above the fans. No one can prove him wrong on that except for the fans themselves.

  • Nick May 15, 2018 at 7:29 pm

Toby must be sold abroad even if it’s for less than available here,We’ve been Utds feeder club for too long, can’t carry on or become City,s either

    • Blackfish May 15, 2018 at 7:31 pm

      Toby should not be sold.
It would have been great if toby has signed the contract today not sanchez.

      • Harry Hotspur May 15, 2018 at 7:38 pm

        Correct.

        Sanchez is great.

        Toby is more betterer.

        • Blackfish May 15, 2018 at 7:49 pm

and Sanchez is new and I am sure there would still be many year on his contract.

          • Mikespurs May 15, 2018 at 8:56 pm

It only added a year but improved wages. From what iv read

        • MiT May 15, 2018 at 8:01 pm

I’m not sure I agree. There is a growing injury factor with Toby that expands with age. Toby is not better if Toby can’t play.

  • Blackfish May 15, 2018 at 7:28 pm

    Tappaspur
    Trips on £17k a week 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

He signed a contract at the start of the season which signinfcantly improved his salary from the previous 35k.

  • gloster1861 May 15, 2018 at 7:20 pm

    Let’s get some perspective please.

Toby is on 50k per week.

Sissoko is pocketing 95k per week.

This is a fucking joke and Levy should be ashamed, let alone praised as an astute businessman.

    • Tappaspur May 15, 2018 at 7:22 pm

      • Tappaspur May 15, 2018 at 7:23 pm

Now that is a big crime if it is true.

That statement alone is an insult to the heritage of this great club and to all of its supporters who are being rinsed for the highest ticket monies for a Poundland investment ethos whilst the Chairman increases his remuneration to the highest amount in the EPL. There are no words to describe how unbelievable it is that the bald maggot gets away with this utter nonsense time and time again….

  • Nick May 15, 2018 at 7:19 pm

As mentioned before on this great blog,Levy doesn’t have any scruples & will get rid of anyone who doesn’t fit the brief,Poch included. That would go for any players that pleads Poch’s case ala Eriksen especially if at a huge profit. Its up to Levy & no amount of brinkmanship, pressure or leverage will make a joy of difference

  • Camus May 15, 2018 at 7:19 pm

What I heard ‘on the grapevine’ was that Toby just wants out – for money and trophies. It was a case of Spurs coming back to match his original demands and Toby’s people then upping the stakes again to a level they knew Spurs wouldn’t offer.
Could be bobbins but that’s what I ‘eard anyway…

It would explain the ‘freezing out’ job that’s been done on him.

    • Nick May 15, 2018 at 7:21 pm

Also to say paying Aldi 50k per week is lamentable is pretty sad really. 50k a week not enough to do a hobby full time, fuck football has left planet earth i think.

  • Matt May 15, 2018 at 6:28 pm

In fairness when we signed him at 50k he was a 26 year old farmed out on loan to Southampton. He’s worth 100+ given what he’s done for us but he ain’t worth 150, if indeed that’s what he really wants.

  • Nick May 15, 2018 at 6:24 pm

I do agree H but these players are quick enough to sign up to £50k a week for four years, till Timmy shiny boots comes & signs for £80k
