Ehiogu Snuffs It

Ehiogu Snuffs It

A final tweet from Ugo Ehiogu promoting kindness has gone viral after the former England defender’s death.

Ehiogu’s passing was announced by Tottenham this morning, the 44-year-old dying after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club’s training ground on Thursday.

Ehiogu was Tottenham’s under-23 coach and tributes have poured in to a “gentle giant”.

That eulogy from Lee Hendrie was summed by Ehiogu’s final post on Twitter, with the former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough man calling for acts of kindness in a poignant message.

Sent on March 29, he said: “Gave a homeless girl £10 last night in Dalston. She didn’t ask or beg. Random impulsive act from me. Not gona lie. Felt good. #dosomethingkind.”

As a result, people from across the world have promoted the #dosomethingkind – the hashtag was trending in Great Britain and the United States – with some donating £10 to charities in memory of Ehiogu.

Thanks to the venerable Nut, I’m on me way to Wembley. Setting off for the 3 hour pilgrimage in a while. I went to 3 out of the 4 games we’ve played there this season and honestly believe we have grown as a team through our experience at that venue. Chelski will be a different kettle of crapola, of course, but the more minutes we’ve played there, the more willing we’ve become to use the full expanse of the pitch.

One thing that will be vital is that we’re accurate with any longer balls we play. There’s nothing that kills momentum and energy quicker than working hard to get and retain possession only to lose it by hitting the oppo with a Hollywood ball. suddenly everyone is 5 yards +/- out of position and we’re chasing back like dervishes.

Chelski are not a high pressing team in the way that has caused us problems this season, so we can afford to be patient in possession BUT we will also need to take opportunities to put them on the back foot on counter attacks too. It’s all about correct decision-making, really, because I think our current starting 11 is easily a match for theirs…as we’ve proved already.

Playing the CL & EL at Wembley: the Levy masterstroke that has lead us up to this moment. You know it’s true.

Sad indeed. Of course most of us never met or knew Ugo at all, however, from a distance even, you may form a view or an opinion on a person, and act accordingly. I dont know or have ever met Poch, Dimothy, the Donald, John Terry – legend, leader, wifestealing racist, Dean Richards or David Rocastle, but i know what opinion i have on them, and how i would voice it. As some of you have noticed, a certain, lets say “direct” tone is comme il faut around here, boys and men. In my experience sometimes i myself use negative or obscene language to cope with difficult situations (such as death), which helps in overcoming the situation. In the case where you dont know the person, this is more difficult, however the profanity is probably more acceptable, regardless of you feeling any sadness or loss at all personally, towards someone you generally symphatise with, from a distance. The point is, (if there is one here, i am not sure), profanity, even in death, i find more acceptable when it is someone you love, like, support, feel good about, than towards someone you dont. I was saddened just as much by Rocastle as Ugo and Richards, much too early for all of them, and in my opinion, all gentlemen. Some, less gentlemantype personalities death, i would not give my profanity, in the given situation, that would indeed be inappropiate.

    Je Suis Ugo

We don’t want you to go all Lady Di.

    The man died.

Out of respect for his name, stature, his family and the club, you choose not to be respectful but crass.

Your responses on this subject thus far and I feel to me will be along the lines of a child that has the ball and the jumpers.

It’s a sad day for the Spurs camp. Here we are disgusted at your choice of honouring the man and here we go fighting over it.

    • East Stand April 22, 2017 at 9:39 am

I was in the same pub as Ugo about a year ago and he was there with his wife and kids, I mentioned to the person I was was with who isn’t into football that he played for England and that he worked for Spurs as a coach.

When you see actually see someone out with their family and suddenly realise that will never happen again, that a husband and father has been snatched away like that then the reality hits home.

When you don’t know somebody it’s not really going to hit home, why would it? I’m sure there are people who have lived for many years only a few hundred yards away from us where we live who have passed away and we’ve never even batted an eyelid.

Innocent children and men and women are being killed every day by war and famine and it doesn’t even cross our minds to pay tribute to them, hundreds of them, thousands of them every day, month and year.

In a way this headline raises a bigger moral issue over prioritising grief, did you or I know him? Do you or I know all the hundreds of men women and children across the world who died yesterday? It’s sad and it’s tragic the way Ugo passed away and it it is when other people too, many in similar circumstances or worse.

Overall the headline was puzzling and only HH knows why he chose to put something up that would be seen in such bad taste, but like it or not there are several ways you can read it.

Contextually and within the world it actually raises the question of people being in the public eye getting floods of tributes from people that never knew them or their family.

Perhaps have a moment’s silence and reflection for all those that are dying both here and all over the world every day you don’t know before being quite so disgusted and worked up by this headline regarding someone who at the end of the day you didn’t know either.

Is an ex footballer, someone who worked for the club you support any more worthy of a tribute than anyone else? Of course they aren’t. The level of this ‘moral outrage’ over a few words seems rather lopsided when you look at the state of the world and the daily death and misery that takes place.

It is desperately sad what happened to Ugo and I agree that the headline was insensitive but if you really want to honour his passing then stop building it up out of all proportion with a display of some kind of fake grief based on the idea that you ‘knew how HH meant it’. If anything you’re making it worse…

    • MysteriousStranger April 22, 2017 at 10:40 am

I think the article is a bit disingenuous – the whole point with Moneyball was to do with filling the gaps in your line up with underrated role players to save on budget, and as for inferring Oakland got an advantage or maybe performed better than expected due to certain players’ use of PEDs, everyone was using PEDs in baseball. So in using them they were merely playing on a level playing field.

That is a reply to Stevo87.

  • Stevo1987 April 21, 2017 at 9:07 pm

Hmm….I read the HH headline and thought erm.. erm..Well, I never knew the guy. People die all the time. Some were bastards some were good people. But I never knew them. Saying someone “snuffed it” may be bad taste I dunno. Would saying someone died make it any better. I had a colleague refer to some relative as “she had expired”. Obviously, they weren’t from the UK or English wasn’t there first language. Anyway, Harry would you care to explain why you used the term “snuffed it”? A lot of people are are talking about it but only you know why. In the context of death he died , he snuffed it, shuffled off this mortal coil, pegged out, pushing up daisies, popped one’s bleedin’ clogs. I couldn’t give a shit what some might term my death when I go.

I think we do, generally, don’t we? Frankly, I was a little surprised that Ugo felt the need to tweet that he’d given someone £10.00.
Those of us who can and do don’t usually announce it.

You know what, i totally agree with this statement. A few weeks back a homeless guy approached me and rather than ask for money he asked me to buy him a pint of milk. Rather than just ignoring him as per custom I felt touched and so took the £1 he offered me and promptly fucked off!! The guy is clearly in his position because of his lack of care for money, i feel I taught him a valuable lesson and hopefully put him back on the right path. Thing is, i didn’t feel the need to tweet about it…people do great things everyday.

  • Still Nil Nil April 21, 2017 at 7:44 pm

I have been critical of Ugo re his coaching as it seemed that since he came in as a coach, the youth seem to have stagnated.
That was at a time when we first got stuffed by the Chelsea youth a few years back in the youth fa cup.
However, the Chelsea youth seem to be of a different level over the last few years as they’ve stormed the fa youth cup for the past half a decade.
So reading the contributions made by colleagues and players who have played for and with him, my judgement may have been misplaced.
I’m not just saying that because he’s sadly passed on at such a young age, but because it’s not until somebody goes that you don’t know personally but is in the public eye, how they are as a person is rarely projected into the public arena unless they’re a cunt.
    Ugo certainly wasn’t that.
And he clearly was a better coach than I gave him credit for.
    R.I.P Ugo.

    As for Harry’s headline.

    It’s a Harry headline.

I’m not making excuses for him as he’s more than capable of doing that himself, but those of us who’ve been visiting here for sometime (most far longer than me) come to this blog knowing what to expect.
I doubt that Harry ever meant it disrespectfully as I have seen comments by him that show he clearly feels that it’s a very sad thing that’s happened to Ugo and his family.
But nobody should be surprised by it.

Very sad news about Ugo. The young lads clearly looked up to him, and they are going to be some tough boots to fill.

Footballs a funny old game, I’m sure if most of us were in a similar position at our workplace would probably take some time to be fully focussed on our jobs again. Our lads have had a day. Hopefully they’ll channel their emotion in a constructive way and do Ugo’s family and his memory proud today.

  • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 7:28 pm

Presumably tomorrow only those who knew Ugo will be expected to applaud?

Really? Is that your position H?

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:34 pm

This is a thing you invented.

      Did you know him?

      Of course you didn’t.

Have you acted in an equally irrational manner when strangers in your street have died?

      Of course you didn’t.

      Stop being so daftly precious.

      • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 8:12 pm

So if someone comes on here who did know him, and criticised you, you would admit you’ve been heavy handed?

    • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 7:37 pm

What about the article H republished about the opportunity to make a financial gift? I’m no Boy Hotspur apologist (I rarely agree with him) but surely that’s the point of the crude headline?

How many of the outraged will be making a £10.00 donation to Ugo’s family?

      • MysteriousStranger April 21, 2017 at 7:54 pm

Probably not many, because the family are likely to be well looked after, what with him being a professional footballer, turned coach. And because the trend was to #dosomethingkind in memory of him and in keeping with the sentiment of his last tweet, not to donate tenners to his family as far as I can tell. Is there a link?

Up to us all what we choose to do, if we want to emulate that. Whether it
‘s taking food to the homeless, or donating to a worthy cause. And whether we do that today or tomorrow.

        • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Thank you for the correction. I’m not overly familiar with the way Twitter works.

I should have written: How many of the outraged will be making a £10.00 donation to a charity in Ugo’s memory?

          • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 8:17 pm

Surely that would be the right thing to do for those genuinely affected by Ugo’s premature demise?

        • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 8:09 pm

Absolutely. We all should do what we can, when we can.

          • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 8:20 pm

I think we do, generally, don’t we? Frankly, I was a little surprised that Ugo felt the need to tweet that he’d given someone £10.00.

Those of us who can and do don’t usually announce it.

            • Cptcaveman April 21, 2017 at 8:37 pm

You know what, i totally agree with this statement. A few weeks back a homeless guy approached me and rather than ask for money he asked me to buy him a pint of milk. Rather than just ignoring him as per custom I felt touched and so took the £1 he offered me and promptly fucked off!! The guy is clearly in his position because of his lack of care for money, i feel I taught him a valuable lesson and hopefully put him back on the right path. Thing is, i didn’t feel the need to tweet about it…people do great things everyday.

  • Frontwheel 2 April 21, 2017 at 7:24 pm

This new fashion of being morally outraged outrages me.

    • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 7:26 pm

      That’s outrageous.

    • Freünd or Foe April 21, 2017 at 7:27 pm

I like to keep the rage within.

      • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:34 pm

I prefer mine to be left a slight angle against the machine.

    • Freünd or Foe April 21, 2017 at 7:27 pm

I like to keep the rage within.

      • Caspurs♿️ April 21, 2017 at 7:30 pm

        That’s inrageous x2.

  • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 7:23 pm

There is no such thing as bad publicity.

    Is that the angle?

  • Paul Nelson April 21, 2017 at 7:22 pm

Not happy at all with that headline H, some odious cunts deserve fuck all when they depart but some others deserve a bit more sympathy.

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:26 pm

And you knew this guy did you?

      • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 7:26 pm

        Is this helpful?

Pithy reason No1:Because you’ve made a Dickhead of yourself with that headline

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:21 pm

      Blub blub blub

  • Spursexile April 21, 2017 at 7:10 pm

H, you’ve judged it wrongly. It is an appalling headline – just look at the responses to it. Be a big man and admit you’ve made a mistake.

    • A waddle and a fork April 21, 2017 at 7:39 pm

As if he would. It’s a combination of clickbait and Harry’s general bitterness for life that he sometimes vents self-destructively for attention. Hopefully no one from Ugos friends or family see it. There are some decent people on here and I’ve met them in the flesh. Nilly is one great example. This stuff doesn’t reflect that.

      • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 7:44 pm

        Ahem.

      • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:47 pm

So bail! Shun me! Tell your friends I’m bad.

Are you really waiting for an apology?

        It simply will not happen.

  • Inzaman Abdul-Huq April 21, 2017 at 7:06 pm

Wow. Perfect juxtaposition of a Harry headline and an article by somebody else. In that, the latter has actually been proof-read and isn’t a 70s sitcom infused-riddle calling anybody with a different opinion a moron, and the former consists of 67% one syllable words.

The only reason I read this is to see how pissed off you are when Spurs win.

  • Fakinel Mate April 21, 2017 at 6:54 pm

    Poor form harry ole bean.

    • East Stand April 21, 2017 at 7:05 pm

HH would be an odious individual or thick if he meant it in any other way than ironically.

His take on things might not always sit comfortably with everyone but I don’t believe he’s any of the above. So stop freaking and try and get it into some kind of context. Very clumsy at worst…

  • Tspurs1 April 21, 2017 at 6:48 pm

Stop sticking up for the dickhead Harry he’s a pathetic excuse of a so called Spurs fan, as usual trying to get the spotlight, he may realise one day when a close friend or family dies that what a tossed he is

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 6:55 pm

None of my family or close friends have ever died. Our DNA is immortal.

  • JohnnyPaycheck April 21, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Clumsy, crass, and stupid headline. The fine article deserves far better. Are you auditioning for the Sun?

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 6:58 pm

Are you able to thrash out a brief, but perhaps pithy reason as to why I should care what you think?

      • Spursexile April 21, 2017 at 7:09 pm

H, you’ve judged it wrongly. It is an appalling headline – just look at the responses to it. Be a big man and admit you’ve made a mistake.

Pithy reason No1:Because you’ve made a Dickhead of yourself with that headline

  • Chris cp April 21, 2017 at 6:31 pm

The headline is about as classy as the guy who wrote it.

  • Gooseuk April 21, 2017 at 6:27 pm

Dissapointed with that title Harry. You might be miffed with the grief junkies, but putting something like that on the internet that a deceased family member could see so soon after the event…. Nah mate, too far.

  • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 6:24 pm

Nice positive article, drawing attention to the fund raising in Ugo’s honour, and very crafty headline to draw people in to see the article.

I’m sure those complaining will be glad to know they can express their grief and respect by donating. Well done.

    • MysteriousStranger April 21, 2017 at 6:29 pm

I couldn’t defend the headline.at all. Congrats to you for finding a way. I don’t suppose anyone clicking through from Newsnow are thinking along the same lines.

      • MysteriousStranger April 21, 2017 at 6:32 pm

Yeah not my finest sentence but happy enough with the sentiment.

      • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 6:38 pm

I’m assuming that was the point. The Boy, in his own way, has raised awareness of the fund raising, which may lead to some extra financial support for the family.

If that wasn’t the point, it has had that effect (potentially).

        • MysteriousStranger April 21, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Nothing that an “Ugh Ehiogu – RIP” headline couldn’t do equally IMO.

          • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 7:03 pm

I agree to a certain extent, but I didn’t know him.

Did he hit his wife, did he provide performance enhancing drugs to teenagers? I didn’t know him. I have no grief.

            • gloster1861 April 21, 2017 at 7:20 pm

What? Because you didn’t know him you treat him with suspicion? Guilty until proven innocent?

              You’re better than this H.

    • Horndog April 21, 2017 at 6:36 pm

I was scratching my head, Spurts, trying to figure out H’s headline. You sleuthed it. He always has a meaning to his writing.

      • UnkleTaff April 21, 2017 at 6:37 pm

Please tell me you’re taking the piss as much as I hope Spurstacus is.

        • Horndog April 21, 2017 at 6:43 pm

I believe the headline was intended to lead the reader to the article which is intended to focus on the man and the person that he really was.

          • East Stand April 21, 2017 at 6:59 pm

I can’t imagine that HH would put a headline like that up irony, which is what it is kids. That seems to have bypassed a lot of people but in fairness it understandable, it’s a bit too ironic for a lot of people on the day the man passed away. I wouldn’t have risked it, but then again it’s not my blog…

          • UnkleTaff April 21, 2017 at 8:00 pm

I don’t believe any thought went into the headline beyond the typing of the words.

            • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 8:03 pm

              You bastard!!!!!!

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 6:56 pm

People don’t like grief unless it’s gift wrapped.

  • Ged April 21, 2017 at 6:21 pm

what sort of a prick makes the headline ‘ehiogu snuffs it’??? you’d think he was a fictional character with that level of disrespect.

  • AntSpurs April 21, 2017 at 6:19 pm

What a player and a good man. I remember as a kid really wanting him at Spurs. RIP Ugo and best of wishes to his wife, kids and family and friends. 🐓⚽️.

  • Tony April 21, 2017 at 6:18 pm

Harry, you are a proven c*nt. You have no respect and your writing skills are that of a five year old!

    • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 6:26 pm

      It’s a Press Association article.

      • BigChiv April 21, 2017 at 6:49 pm

        And who’s headline?

        • Spurstacus 💋 April 21, 2017 at 7:00 pm

You think the ‘writing skills’ dig was about the headline?

          • BigChiv April 21, 2017 at 7:08 pm

No, I think the ‘writing skills’ dig was a just that ‘a dig’, in general, at HH. Personally I think his writing skills are pretty good, even if I don’t always agree with his opinion, or, more often, his rationale.

  • Cyril April 21, 2017 at 6:17 pm

What were you thinking with that headline? The article is fine and respectful but the headline is jarringly misjudged.

  • totnam April 21, 2017 at 6:17 pm

You should snuff out that abysmal headline. Last time I read your garbage.

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 6:23 pm

      Toodlepip!

  • PhilBealOG April 21, 2017 at 6:16 pm

Headline is in bad taste. I have lost respect for your opinions today which is a shame as I usually enjoy them.

  • caveman April 21, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Harry, cop yourself on. There’s no room on social media for that headline.

  • Cheap Cunt April 21, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Anything for a click and ad revenue you sub human scumbag.

  • Ronan April 21, 2017 at 5:48 pm

Shocking event on the brink of a huge game. Saw Ugo talking on bt’s spurs special just last night about imbuing poch’s ethos in the yoots. He seems to have been an important cog in the THFC machine as well as a top-class human being. God rest him, and hopefully the lads give him a mighty tribute tomorrow.

    • Harry Hotspur April 21, 2017 at 5:52 pm

It’s a bloody dreadful thing. God only knows how his family are coping with the news. It’s no age at all.

      • Ronan April 21, 2017 at 8:07 pm

It’s pretty frightening, tbh, and who knows the effect it’s had on the team. It’s a lot to have to take on board going into tomorrow’s game.

  • Popsy April 21, 2017 at 5:47 pm

NOT a very respectful headline – Disgusted !

  • Mark April 21, 2017 at 5:40 pm
