Match report from PA Sport Manchester City responded from a nightmare 10 days in style to put one hand on the Premier League title with a 3-1 win at Tottenham.

City were dumped out of the Champions League by Liverpool and missed the chance to seal top spot against rivals Manchester United over the last week but Pep Guardiola’s men put on a sizzling display at Wembley to get back to winning ways.

First-half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan and a Raheem Sterling effort after the break did the damage, meaning City will clinch a third Premier League crown if Manchester United fail to beat West Brom on Sunday.

If Jose Mourinho’s men win, City can do the business next week against Swansea regardless of any other results.

Tottenham were in the game when Christian Eriksen scored a goal no one could take off him just before half-time but their impressive 14-game unbeaten run – going back to the reverse fixture in December – is over.

There was no sign of City’s recent troubles as they immediately found their groove and could have led with only three minutes on the clock.
David Silva foraged down the right and fed Sterling, whose pinpoint cross was sent crashing into the post by a first-time Leroy Sane effort.

The dominant start was deservedly rewarded with a 22nd-minute lead and it was not out of the usual Manchester City playbook.

A long ball from Kyle Walker saw Jesus outpace Davinson Sanchez to race in on goal and finish coolly.

City’s celebrations were barely over by the time they were 2-0 up just three minutes later.

Sterling broke clear this time and, when Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris charged out and took out the England man with a rash tackle, referee Jonathan Moss pointed to the spot.

Replays subsequently showed contact was made outside of the area, but that did not stop Gundogan converting with a brilliant penalty.

Guardiola’s men had done enough to be out of sight but Spurs got a lifeline just before half-time when Eriksen netted for a third game in a row.

Harry Kane fed him on the edge of the area and there was a large amount of fortune about the finish as his original effort rebounded off goalkeeper Ederson back onto the Dane and into the corner.

Given City’s capitulation against United last week, Tottenham’s goal changed the dynamic of the game and the hosts were camped in City’s half for the opening 20 minutes after the resumption.

But – for all their possession – they could not muster any chances and it was City that had a golden opportunity to put the game to bed in the 64th minute.

Jesus again left Sanchez for dead but this time dragged his shot from the edge of the area horribly wide.

After Sterling missed another fine chance, the England attacker finally got on the scoresheet in the 72nd minute when he rammed home from close range after Jesus’ shot was parried to put the champagne firmly on ice.

    Its not Wembley. Fans react.

Back to the Loris skipper thing if I may, to me it suited the squad a few seasons ago when expectations were lower.

Back then Poch was developing the current senior players, the likes of Eriksen, Kane, Mason, Lamela, Winks, Dier were all that bit younger and Loris was the France skipper (still is). At the time he was kind of the natural choice (ignoring the fact he’s a goalie) and many of us became worried that the likes of Madrid or Manure would tempt him away. In goal keeping terms he was the closest thing we had to world class in the squad.

It’s clear that the squad has developed and expectations have been raised (much to the annoyance of ENIC I’m sure!) and a mild mannered goal keeper no longer cuts it as captain. Loris isn’t in great form but he’s still the best we could mange to get when in form so all those suddenly deciding he’s ‘shit’ should probably calm down. He’s player out of form, it happens.

    There are four main issues here;

    1. Loris isn’t as a character the right kind of personality to complement the mentality of the rest of the team. Buffon is the other well known example of a skipper keeper but he’s chest thumping, lunatic force of nature. Hugo is the equivalent of a librarian to Buffon’s Italian Braveheart routine.

    2. Things like our slow starts in games I would put down to a lack of leadership on the outfield, how can a goalie be in touch with the pace of the game and the general dynamic of where the tackles are being won and the passes made? How does a goalie communicate with everyone constantly when he’s positioned where he is? How does he lead by example if he’s having barely a touch of the ball for much of the game? It’s just a bad choice.

    3. How do you drop down to form him as club captain? Ok, it’s not impossible but hardly ideal.

    4. We have no other natural skippers in the team, and if we have ‘potential’ captains where do you start to begin that process when you need leadership in the present?

The situation regarding leadership (and also the captaincy) must be addressed in the summer but it won’t because experienced leaders good enough to get in the Spurs starting 11 want too much money…

    • ronwol96061 April 15, 2018 at 3:27 pm

The bigger problem is Lloris the goalkeeper..becoming Gomes II

      • caveman April 15, 2018 at 3:29 pm

Just hope he plays Vorm against United.

      • East Stand April 15, 2018 at 3:30 pm

A keeper in bad form and no leaders, we are probably doing fairly well considering!!

        • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 3:39 pm

Agree with you. Lloris needs to hand over captaincy to an outfield general.

There was at least one (and possibly two) instances yesterday when one of our players was fouled but Moss waited to see if there was an advantage for us to be gained and, having seen that there was, decided to pull the play back and award a free kick instead.

  • legoverlass April 15, 2018 at 2:37 pm

Just saw the highlights and no surprises. Trippier and Davies are simply not the standard we need to win anything. Sanchez is a great prospect but needs top pros around him like Verts and TOBY. Pooch is a w**ker of the highest order by deliberately sidelining Toby when we desperately need his experience at the back. Dier is average and has been for a long time now. A match fit Wanyama alongside Dembele is a better selection. Moura has more ability in his left toe than Lamela and Alli combined yet gets no game time of any meaning since signing. Son was playing the best he has played a few weeks ago coming in wide from the left. Kane is not fit clearly. We built from a strong defensive formation in the past few seasons and Pooch and Levy have successfully f**ked that over and what we have now is a shambolic rotation that creates the madness we saw against Juve that had us dumped out the CL and a goalkeeper who is getting exposed with one to one challenges that he cannot deal with. I just don’t see Pooch as the guy that will get us winning titles and CL competitions. He has an ego almost as big as Levy and tactically he leaves me cold with his team selections and match decisions.

    • Harry Hotspur April 15, 2018 at 3:14 pm

  • Camus April 15, 2018 at 1:52 pm

To answer Glos’s question a bit further down, I said a little while ago I don’t think we will win silverware with Poch, and stick by that. He’s a top guy, we all like him and he’s a really good coach but with the limitations in place, and his own stubbornness, it adds up to us competing but not winning. He’ll win no trophies with Lloris in goal, Toby at home, Davies & Tripps not quite up to it at the top level… Just too many weaknesses there. It’s a big shame. We’re so close. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 1:23 pm

City had some tough games lately. I thought they would be a bit tired and our speed would hurt them but they kept up with us,i think they covered us really well.
We have gaps in our defence. Its one of the frailties of the high line.If the other team turns around the ball quickly and surely they will find many gaps in our defence. We become exposed and you cant always blame the defence. Our attackers and gave them the ball too much. They squeezed us to the wings and when a cross came over they scoopeed it up 90% of the time and turned the ball around quickly and hit our gaps
When Moura came on he took control of the ball. Nobody was doing that. We looked haphazard. It needed a strong head t take control of the ball all game

    • Nick April 15, 2018 at 1:34 pm

Too many players had a bad game or as I believe were protecting themselves for the semi final. The holes between midfield & defence were the worst I’ve seen at our club for years.Dier,Dele,Lamela then Son didn’t turn up.Eriksen can’t do it alone & the pressure then applied to the back four was immense.Kane shouldn’t be playing full stop.if it wasn’t a semifinal I’d expect Lloris to be dropped but he won’t be.

      • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 1:59 pm

Nick I didnt think they didnt try. They seems t have been shell shocked with a team that was on. City had played some tough games over the past week or two and yet they were stronger faster and more apt. We couldnt even control the ball itself never mind City. Not being in the game was not our intention.

  • melcyid April 15, 2018 at 1:14 pm

for this game the writing was on the wall after 3 mins,Sane was out on the left just outside the box on his own no one around him for 15 yds.Trips was our nearest player who was in the middle of the box.He took a look over his shoulder and still didnt bother to go and mark him so all it took was a city player to see him unmarked and lob the whole defence. If Sanes shot had gone in we would have had the biggest thrashing in years based on our play.We invited them to take advantage of our crappy positioning and unawareness.Thank god Aguerro wasnt playing.Sunday league reserve team defending throughout except for lion hearted Jan

    • Nick April 15, 2018 at 1:29 pm

The point of playing Lamela over Son I feel, was to give some help To Tripps on that side, assistance never came so you can’t totally blame trippier

  • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:41 pm

The bottom line is this: you can’t use the same tactics against Man City that we used against Stoke City.

Poch appears to be a one trick pony, or rather, he gets into a system and clings to it doggedly, until he moves to a new system, which he then clings to doggedly. Last season it was all about three at the back, but that is now in the dustbin.

    • David Dillenberg April 15, 2018 at 12:43 pm

Actually we were a tad fortunate to beat Stoke!

      • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:46 pm

Stoke should have been down to nine men actually, if the ref hadn’t allowed them to break up our play with continual niggly fouling.

        • David Dillenberg April 15, 2018 at 12:47 pm

We should have been down to 10 men yesterday had Davies been correctly sent off.

          • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:51 pm

No quibbling from me. Davies was under pressure the whole match, and Poch did nothing to bolster him even though it was obvious City were making hay on their right flank.

These are the games when you question Poch and wonder if he has the ability to lead us any further. He has got us to a good level: can he get us to the next one, actually winning stuff?

          • Nick April 15, 2018 at 12:54 pm

That’s your take on the performance of the referee? Not the 50 other decisions that he gave against us?

Yesterday was a tactical clusterfuck of gargantuan proportians, throw in a Sanchez defensive preformance out of the Laurel & Hardy book of defending. This was of course after the lads and i were singing his praises in the boozer pre match and he goes and has a game like that although i blame Pooch more then Sanchez.
Timing they say is everything and that preformance could not have come at a worse time, next weeekend will make or break our season, although tuesdays game gives us a welcome oppotunity to get back to winning ways, lose and we will limp to fourth spot (bloody well hope so!) and the media and fans will ridicule us again as serial losers. Supporting Spurs is a fucking curse i tell ya!

The bottom line is this: you can’t use the he same tactics against Man City that we used against Stoke City.

That’s OK as my toilet breaks last about 35 hours.

Children in these countries have always been part of a labour force. In bad conditions etc but this happened in England too years ago and England became an industrial force and laws came into place to sort it out. This is evolution. When people have nothing they scrape and find anything to eat and eventually they grow along with their country.
I remember that a few years ago that activists would throw paint on furriers shop fronts as they didnt want to keill animals for fur coats even though those furriers may have had in their family several generations of furriers in the family when it was acceptable. A woman can wear a fur coat one day and the next become an activist.
There are a lot of companies who buy items made in the far east that may use child labour in certain cases but they insist in human conditions and help pay for schooling etc and help out the villages.

      • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:34 pm

I hope that last bit is true RW.

As for fur, if you eat meat why not wear fur and leather? I am now a veggie but if other people want to eat meat produced under decent conditions I have no beef with that…

Yes Im involved with a company that part of the business works with asian sources directly and many companies are going over and instead of Greenpeacing it are bringing business but are also creating growth in those communities

          • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:44 pm

Not all growth is good. It has to be beneficial long term.

Nothing is perfect Glos. The ideals of theory go out the window in the market of real life. There is some good and some bad. Yes it needs some control no doubt but it also evolves too. Take the food out of the mouths and then what happens?

  • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 11:54 am

Is Moura the second coming? No.
What he can do is play with a calm head.Look up. See his options.
Our team generally is frantic and frantic has generally helped us win games. When Ive watched Moura he seems to me that while his his style of footie and attributes are different to VDV, that his time on the ball is similar. He feels comfortable with the ball. While any of our players seem to want to get rid of the ball,he asks for the ball and makes it work for him. I havent seen Moura too much but to me he knows where he is at and sees the options and then decides what to do quickly. There is an element of class there with that thats lacking with all our runners who buzz around.
Moura brought some calmness and still quickness when he came on.
Its something that I always though we needed. I hope Poch sees it and it brings some depth to the other players. Dembele has that calmness around the ball. Its all frantic and when he gets it we know its good.

    • Mad Carew April 15, 2018 at 11:59 am

Poch needs to see beyond loyalty and time served as rights of passage, Moura was better than any player on the pitch for us bar Verts.

      • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:02 pm

Loyalty means everything to Poch. That’s why he won’t play Toby again.

        • David Dillenberg April 15, 2018 at 12:49 pm

He needs to drop Lloris for starters.

      • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 12:13 pm

Poch wants all the players to be totally loyal to the system. Its his God. Moura is a fluid player. Fluid players have been our stars over the years. They have a mind of their own,can think..Often our players dont think they react and when it works it works and when it doesnt it doesnt. VDV had a mind of his own,Ginola too.
Dembele always shows that class on the ball. Moura has that. Verts has that too these days. He knows what he wants to do. Others get rid of the ball like its a hot potato

        • Gloster1861 April 15, 2018 at 12:18 pm

True. Dele can hold the ball on occasions, like last week when he played in Eriksen. It looked like he had dwelt on the ball too long, but he knew what he was doing.

          • Ronwol1960-61 April 15, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Yes it happens. But you know about emotional energy. It works two ways. The same energy gives you excitment and andrenaline when you are pushing it out positively and and when you are not pushing it out it gives you anxiety and depression. Its the same and its the same when we play. We are either using the energy quickly and forcefully positively and when its not we are frant haphazard. At that point we need control.

  • Caveman April 15, 2018 at 11:30 am

My heart sinks whenever Mrs 💋 comes home with anything she’s bought from Primark. It’s always cheap crap she never wears. I think she just likes pretending to be one of the great unwashed for a couple of hours. The stuff she buys usually ends up being used to dry my little Jackshund off after a walk in the rain.

                    • 💋 April 15, 2018 at 12:09 pm

In this context my little Jackshund is a quadruped mammal of the canine species.

The suppression of feminine expression and the general subjugation of women for the benefit of a brutally dominant paternalism is always a great source of rib-tickling humour.

      • Mad Carew April 15, 2018 at 11:25 am

Our system works well and we can steamroller mid table and struggling teams but against Savvy teams like City, Utd and Liverpool we are caught tactically short, it is suicide to employ the same game against them, the acres of space given to City yesterday was crazy, they dominated the midfield and their quality players had a field day, this is as good as it gets Poch until you learn from your mistakes, Juve didn’t just get lucky, you were out thought tactically, I’m not dreading the FA Cup semi final but I am hoping you sort this problem out, always the opthalmist !
