Dele Alli will win back England boss Gareth Southgate’s trust with more showstopping turns like his goal brace at Chelsea, according to Mauricio Pochettino.

Alli provided the perfect riposte to being omitted from England’s 1-1 draw with Italy by firing two goals as Tottenham claimed their win at Stamford Bridge since 1990 on Sunday.

Christian Eriksen’s long-range bullet and Alli’s double secured Spurs’ 3-1 win in west London, that all-but tied up Tottenham’s fourth-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification.

Spurs boss Pochettino admitted Alli had faced a “tough period” in not featuring for England against Italy – but insisted he never doubted the 21-year-old’s ability to bounce back.

“Dele is not going to be affected if he plays or doesn’t play,” said Pochettino, of Alli.

“He’s got a great character, he’s so strong, he’s a fighter; very competitive. He’s not going to be affected, but then we have to help him. If he doesn’t play for the international team he needs to fight and win trust and confidence again. The only way to do that is doing what he did today. Scoring goals and the performance he did today.

“I’m very, very pleased, it was a tough period for him: but for me I have no doubt over his talent, his character, and I am so happy for him because he deserved it, worked hard. He’s a great talent, only 21, and sometimes we lose focus on that. Sometimes the expectation is too much, and pressure on his shoulders. He doesn’t need to show anything to us, because we trust and believe in him.”

Spurs’ first win at Stamford Bridge in 31 matches in all competitions has surely inched Pochettino’s men over the line for the Premier League’s final Champions League qualification berth.

The former Southampton manager insisted Spurs cannot take anything for granted however, despite boasting an eight-point advantage over Chelsea with seven matches to play.

“There is still a long way to the end, we need to be focused,” said Pochettino. “I think there is still nothing achieved, and I’m sure it will be difficult to finish in the top four.”

Levy would rather take a punt on Sissoko or a bunch of French wannabes. By the way, where is Lucas Moura at the moment?

My prediction for him isn’t a merry one. I’m thinking of him being found wandering about near a motorway and then signing for Everton…

      Actually,

No, not in the context of being paid as a brilliant mind ought to be – using the disparity in the salaries of US College Gridiron coaches versus their own campus Professors as an example – and applying a similar argument that a football coach shouldn’t really be getting paid significantly more than any other top Academics in their respective fields. Though of course Tottenham Hotspur is a commercial entity and can pay however much or as little as they want (whilst adhering to the law) to their staff at whatever level.

    • Ronan April 3, 2018 at 12:22 pm

The THST lady said she’s had a feeling throughout all her meetings with levy that the inspiration for this stadium is the kind of expensive, luxury match day ‘experience’ that he himself requires. But very few people need any of that blx when they go to football, hence the lack of takers for this £2,200 “1882” section.

      • MysteriousStranger April 3, 2018 at 12:46 pm

The South Stand was supposed to be this great end similar to Dortmund’s Yellow Wall – Everton are said to be planning a similar one for their new stadium. An end for your vociferous, vocal, singing fans, providing a cauldron of noise. Does seem rather odd to stick some premium seats in the middle of it. Surely those patrons should be eating their prawn sandwiches in the relative peace of one of the other stands?

        • Ronan April 3, 2018 at 1:06 pm

Exactly, there are already going to be 9,000 corporate seats elsewhere in NWHL .. 2,000 more than at the soulless Emirates. There was simply no need for any more in the heart of the kop stand. And even if he had managed to get them sold, most of those seats would probably have been empty for ten minutes into the second half.

With the new figures out for last season, it would seem that ticket prices for the new stadium aren’t necessary to keep the show on the road and are sheer greed by ENIC. I’d hate to be buying a season ticket these days. Greedy little schmuck.

    • caveman April 3, 2018 at 11:42 am

It would also seem that, even with the reduction in capacity for the final season at WHL, profits (with TV money) soared, so the paying customer isn’t the main factor in profits. Why didn’t they just increase the capacity by 7,000 as was an earlier suggestion and keep on trucking at WHL. Points more and more to a sale when the project reaches its maximum value. I expect a sale in two or three years.

      • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 11:49 am

And you think they will sell to philanthropists who will drop the prices??????
        Yeah Right!

        • caveman April 3, 2018 at 11:55 am

I’m not saying that Ron. All I was doing was pointing where the max profit comes from. And the fact that Levy doesn’t respect the paying fans.

          • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 12:03 pm

its not about respect its about the market. That how business works Cavey. You put in and hopefully you take out.

There is another point in the market. Poch is with us. he could go to another club and maybe get paid more maybe. If he did Levy would be up shits creel for a while. Poch has more leverage than the individual fans but he is not pushing (he seems to believe in the project) and with all that we had 82,000 for the palace game at Wembley. The market is there. I like watching it on TV. I can watch replays,I can turn it off.I can watch any play as many times as i want.Whats so bad?

If I take my grandson to a museum or to an art gallery and have lunch there or when he gets older take him to some games here what will it cost. These days its a special time out.

            • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 12:06 pm

Is Toby any different. He is trying to get what the market will bare.
And he is no different to many people out there. They go to the highest bidder often

            • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 12:08 pm

On the other hand we could be the Arse. They soon will be paying the fans to show up

    • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 11:47 am

Its business these days Cavey. Its the way big companies work. Its about what the market will bear. If the product is good people will go if not they wont go. Simple. then what is a ticket worth.
Its different that it was many years ago.
I dont think its easy running a football club today. Many just sell out to a bugger buyer or struggle along.
On the positive side I can watch my team play the best footie since the 60’s on my TV. So Im happy.I can talk with friends around the world while the game in on and enjoy the banter. I not less thrilled than I was if I was there. Now watch Harry put up his prices! 🙂

      • MysteriousStranger April 3, 2018 at 12:30 pm

Yeah. This is the thing Ron. You and others abroad (as I once was) can also kick back and watch us live on TV most of the time, whilst people in the U.K. are unable to. Unless we’re tuning in to a moody stream. Ticket sales were supposed to be the reason people in the U.K. aren’t able to watch games live, so fans would still go to the games and clubs wouldn’t lose ticketing revenue. I agree with your points about the market (even if I would prefer for market to not be quite this way inclined). The product is globally sold. What you are buying in this day and age is the dream to one day go to a match, and if the demand for the product is high enough, people will pay the inflated prices. Like these bloody sports tourists and expats who come from abroad. 🤪

Leeds no but we could have been West Brom

‘Last week Jenkins, who was appointed in February after the sacking of the chairman, John Williams, and chief executive, Martin Goodman, by the Chinese owner, Guochuan Lai, admitted his surprise at the “unravelling” of West Brom’s finances in the previous 12 months, admitting there was no more money available for player wages.
“We have wages, transfer fees and loan fees running at record levels and yet we find ourselves in this position,” he said. “I’ll be honest, I’ve come back and I’m shocked at what I have found in some of the decisions that have been made.’

  • Ronwol1960-61 April 3, 2018 at 11:24 am

In other news, Poch is due to get a pay rise to £163k per week (£8.5m pa) – The Telegraph
This throws up a few questions.
    Is he worth it?
Should the manager be the highest paid individual at a football Club?
How is Daniel feeling about paying Poch nearly 4x his own salary?

Its Pochs system that winning, and its Pochs system that is allowing reasonable priced players to hit the heights. It cant last forever this way but it is mostly about Poch and the double time the players put in

An interesting hypothesis … but with one minor flaw. It.

And anyway, Kane is nailed on for five goals in that game to grab the golden boot again.

  • Camus April 3, 2018 at 10:37 am

I’m altering my view on Toby.
The rumour is he was offered £130k-a-week but wants £180k-a-week.
Leaving aside the point that Levy probably needs to start paying everyone more, as it stands Toby is essentially asking to be our highest-paid player, and he hasn’t even played a PL match since October.

He’s not more valuable to us than Kane, Eriksen or Alli, nor probably Son or Jan, as it stands. Our form hasn’t dropped since he’s been out, in fact we’re on a great run of form. I think he’s being a bit of a schmuck when our key players are just getting on with the job in hand.

Could he not just do some cheesy TV commercial back in Belgium, or go in ‘Hello’ Magazine to cover the additional cash he’s after…?

    • Accy April 3, 2018 at 10:40 am

From what I’ve read it’s not really about the cash – it’s about the move. He knows he has one big contract left in him and wants to play for (another!) elite club. He knows Levy won’t pay a ridiculous amount so is ‘asking’ for that to force the move.

Poch has said that if players aren’t going to be here long term, they won’t feature.

      • Camus April 3, 2018 at 10:44 am

Oh, okay. Well, if he wants the move then sod him!

        • gus April 3, 2018 at 10:46 am

It’s sad but I can understand. He went to Atletico and IIRC it didn’t go so well. But his stock will never be higher, and even if he doesn’t make it in a new place he will be well compensated based on his current standing

      • Accy April 3, 2018 at 10:47 am

        Hercules 6th December 2017:

He agreed in summer a contract verbally, then stalled. I personally believe we will sell him end of season, as he is showing no inclination of staying. And it is not about the money now, but about trophies etc. At his age you can understand.

        Hercules 2nd January 2018:

Regarding Toby, it is not really about the money, as indications were in summer his team had all but agreed our offer. He wants to win trophies, and not wait 2 years to realise that. New stadium means nothing.

        Trix 2nd April 2018:

Perhaps nothing has changed. We hear things from different people, and that sometimes comes from different peoples perspectives. It is my opinion (educated by bits I have heard) that if he is demanding £180k per week, it’s because it’s an easier get out. He knows full well he isn’t going to get it, with us, but will somewhere else.

A slice of humble pie for my breakfast, lads…
I have called into question the wisdom of excluding Toby when he’s still a very fine player and on our payroll, but, credit where its due, the Poch man showed us his crown jewels by leaving him out on Sunday and, in effect, we didn’t miss the jug-eared rebel.

The Poch man continues to impress.

    • Sexy Beast April 3, 2018 at 8:23 am

The unity in the squad and squad harmony could easily be the most important thing to the Poochmiester, rock the boat just a smidge you lose the managers trust and it’s all over from there on in, ask Danny Rose and now Toby.
Both could be putting cash 💰 before a World Cup appearance.

      • Camus April 3, 2018 at 8:32 am

Absolutely. I can totally understand why you don’t want a bad apple hanging around the match-day squad at this stage of the season.

        • Gus April 3, 2018 at 8:39 am

Sends a message to the rest of the squad. Even better that the results haven’t suffered

      • Gus April 3, 2018 at 8:42 am

Maybe he really didn’t want to risk inserting him? The next couple of weeks will tell

        • gus April 3, 2018 at 9:12 am

Fitness-wise. As HH said in the vlog, it will be sad if Toby leaves, as he still has plenty to give. I guarantee it is much easier to pay the man what he is worth (or close) than trying to find another player to be as good

      • Sexy Beast April 3, 2018 at 8:44 am

If Toby told Pooch that he would sign up then decided to ask for a wheelbarrow full more a week then that would piss him off, not as bad as Rose for sure.

    • Harry Hotspur April 3, 2018 at 8:42 am

It’s not Toby’s fault THFC want to do things on the cheap. Beating Chelsea in the league sadly is only 3 points. Winning the FA Cup would add greater weight to any argument.

The sane thing to do is to retain your best players – I’ll be fascinated to see how that pans out when the next season begins. In fact I wouldn’t put it past Levy to bring Bale back. Now that would be a jug eared waste of a shirt.

      • Camus April 3, 2018 at 9:02 am

Fair shout, yeah. The man upstairs and his grip on the purse-strings might be the one ultimate thing that stops us winning the league under the Poch project. Bringing back Bale would be alarmingly short-sighted (and ironically just as expensive as retaining Toby) – a see-through attempt at a ‘Box Office’ signing for the new stadium. Sadly, it would be ‘Zlatan Strikes Back’ as he spends more time on the treatment table than the pitch.

      • gus April 3, 2018 at 9:17 am

He’s only 29, he’s got a few good years in him yet. I hope they are with us but I won’t hold my breath. Poch says he won’t risk him in the team until he attains the required fitness. I can understand this, I remember a few years ago when Kevin Wimmer was playing really well as Jan’s deputy only to return to the bench as soon as Jan was upright again. I don’t believe Jan was a significant upgrade at that time and our league run stalled if I recall. Was Poch the manager then? If so, he has learned

Spurs are aiming for second at this point. Game in hand vs Pool, and United faces a Man City squad that is itching to clinch the title against their nemesis. Spurs could even face a City squad that is giving minutes to their bench, especially 3 days after the 2nd CL leg hosting Pool.

Although City are certainly eyeing Chelsea’s record points haul. They look to shatter that.

2nd is well there for the taking. Spurs already control their own destiny for 3rd.

The only person more excited than you at the prospect of second opposed to third is Daniel Levy 😆 It’s worth an extra 5mill

Have a heart – he has been busy the past week unveiling a statue, urging West Ham fans to support their team, going to the football and greeting Ian Rush.

How the hell does a complete cunt like that become such a pivotal politician? Politics in the West is a joke, they do not represent the people. 😡😡😡

The murder rate in London has overtaken New York.

    #PoliceCuts?

    • Harry Hotspur April 3, 2018 at 8:45 am

Not entirely-this is predominantly black on black crime and therefore there are wider issues such as cuts in housing and education etc that have to be factored in.

People aren’t stabbing each other solely because there’s no bobby at the end of the street.

      • Mad Carew April 3, 2018 at 8:48 am

Murder rate in NY is considerably lower this year than normal.

  • SeattleSpursGuy April 3, 2018 at 1:25 am

Howdy, guys. I’m back in Sea-town after a week in the Arizona sun. 35 degree temperature swing 🙁

So I watched the game again on the plane home and I have a bit more appreciation for Poch bringing Kane on as a sub. I was questioning the move–why risk a recently injured Kane when we’re two goals up?–but Kane did his usual thing of putting himself about, making some good runs, and being a focal point. The Chavs had to fear Kane getting free and scoring, so they couldn’t throw as many bodies forward looking for a goal. What could have been a nervy last 10 minutes was fairly comfortable with Kane as the outlet.

Guess that’s why I’ll never manage Spurs.

  • Gus April 3, 2018 at 1:24 am

Aren’t Chelsea starting their stadium upgrade next season? It would be satisfying to think our last clash at the old bridge was a win

Yes, but Hartley really understands the whole ‘get a load of this’ situation.

        • Gus April 2, 2018 at 11:37 pm

There is a very high chance none of those things come to pass. Arsenal may be able to get a jammy win vs the likes of Stoke, they won’t get the same luck against good sides in the ropa. As for chelski, Conte looked down and out on the weekend

          • East Stand April 2, 2018 at 11:40 pm

They might have Gus Hiddink back in charge in time for the cup game. That club is an embarrassment.

    • Rich g April 3, 2018 at 7:17 am

      3things that wont happen??

  • Gus April 2, 2018 at 10:21 pm

That was a massive win, especially coming from behind like that. Hopefully it will give our boys the belief not only to push on to top 4 but to win the FAC too

    • East Stand April 2, 2018 at 11:36 pm

Gus, it effectively ended the Chav’s season which is lovely stuff. Sure, they’ll want to get us back in the cup but they wanted to get one over on us at Stamford Fridge and they didn’t manage it.

Look, this is Spurs and we can’t help but sense the cup game freakishly going against us in some way. It will be a different game and a hard game but we have zero to fear…

      • Gus April 2, 2018 at 11:41 pm

Yes, the result was great, and the belief it should infuse us with is invaluable. We should fear no one in the league or the FAC. We showed a quiet resolve to go from one down and win well, and it’s not the first time that we’ve shown it this season

        • East Stand April 2, 2018 at 11:51 pm

True, we’ve really stepped up when the pressure has been on this season. It’s quite a revolution that Poch is putting together here…

          • Gus April 3, 2018 at 12:11 am

Obviously everyone from the fans to the club would like a trophy to show for it. Hopefully they can make it happen
