Anfield stands as a proud symbol of Liverpool’s global financial muscle, yet just a few yards away are some of the most impoverished areas in the country where food poverty is a real issue.

The stark contrast between the money spent on Anfield and on the footballers who play there has not been lost on the club, who launched their Red Neighbours programme in January to tackle the issues which affect those living in the shadow of the stadium.

“On the field of play you have talent in the Liverpool team worth hundreds of millions of pounds and yet 200 yards away you have families who struggle to put three square meals on the table every day,” chief executive officer Peter Moore told Press Association Sport.

“The economic demographic of postcodes L4, L5 and L6 represents some of the most impoverished areas in the United Kingdom.

“We have kids who, because parents can’t afford anything better, go to school with a Diet Coke and a bag of Doritos, which is far from ideal.

“We are not blind to the irony of what you can see on these great European nights and then you walk the streets and people are in need.

“That would be irresponsible and immoral and we are doing everything we can to do our bit to help as best as we can with food, educational programmes and physical.”

Earlier this month Liverpool announced they would start paying all staff the real living wage as a minimum from the start of June 2018 and before last month’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield a record 728 kilograms of food was collected by a pre-match food bank.

There will be another food bank collection ahead of Saturday’s visit of Southampton, while other activities such as walking football for the over-50s, chair-based yoga and a social club at Anfield for the elderly community and an education centre for youngsters are now regular events on the calendar.

“We are a unique city and the impact we have, both positive and negative, we take seriously,” added Moore.

“The impact we can sometimes have is negative around the stadium itself so like any good neighbour who has some resources we try to spread the wealth.”

Well done LFC…however, “can of diet coke and pack of doritos” because they cant afford anything else, how about a bottle of water (same price, and can re-use for free) and a banana? or a sandwich? Or left overs? or cook in bulk? Come on, I understand short of money, but stop making excuses for eating shit food!

  • caveman November 14, 2017 at 8:18 am

Eriksen could put himself in the Barca shop window with a commanding display against Ireland tonight. I’d dearly like to see Shane Lòng get his finger out of his arse and score a couple of goals though. He hasn’t been paying his way this season for club nor country.

Well, we know Danny boy won’t be short changed if Alli leaves.

Imagine the wrangling, especially if Real are sniffing about him too.

    • caveman November 14, 2017 at 8:04 am

Pure speculative bullshit, that will serve only to affect the players form in a Spurs shirt. These irresponsible hacks should be taken outside and shot. Anyway, is Messi calling all the recruitment shots at Barca, and he’s no youngster himself!

Why sell? Madness, the boy when on form is pure gold around the penalty box!

        • Aussie in Switzerland November 14, 2017 at 9:41 am

Strong borders, policies to grow economy not stifle them, and efficiency of government being a primary driver of said government…..then charities will not have to pick up the load in our relatively rich nations. Not for profit charities are great, but there is something wrong when they are needed at home rather than abroad.

Charity can be a weird thing. Dies it make sense that our lifeboat service is funded entity by charitable giving? I think it’s a disgrace, and an abdication of responsibility by central government not to fund and operate a comprehensive service such as this. The RNLI sprang up 200 years ago but for it to still rely on volunteers in 2017 is remarkable.

  • gloster1861 November 13, 2017 at 11:32 pm

Am I correct in thinking this argument was about the concept of charity?
I am reminded of ‘Call me Dave’ and his ‘Big Society’. Some would say this was a creditable notion to expand the effect of charities and voluntary work in the community; others would say it was a back door way of government to try and avoid responsibility for dealing with social problems. Passing the buck, in other words.

I know I thought Cameron was a cynical fraud, as seen by his notorious comment to ‘cut the green crap’, this being a rather different attitude to his fact finding mission to the Artic Circle when seeking election.

Big business and their social consciences. Don’t make me laugh. I recount how National Grid, who transport gas and electricity in the UK and parts of the US, were keen to show they had a heart by helping local community schemes.

What this ACTUALLY amounted to was persuading their employees to give up their FREE time to help youth clubs, elderly groups, and the like, with the barest minimum outlay of money or resource by the company itself, whilst getting National Grid’s name in the local papers, taking credit for the efforts of others.

It’s rank hypocrisy of the highest order.

I’m sorry you couldn’t detect the opportunity to expand on your comment. How about this?:
Please will you expand on your assertion that there shouldn’t be a need for charity.

      • Sid Trotter November 13, 2017 at 10:07 pm

You clearly will only believe what you want to believe – and thats your perogative. Clearly, having an open mind is anathema to you (as we have seen about women’s rights, abortion etc etc), but that’s fine, that’s your choice. Ignorance must be fun.

You responded to the statement made by “My little mate” who I have never met but who seems like a decent fellah, and said “I’d ask you to expand on that statement but, what would be the point, I don’t think you could.” (more name calling?). So you actually didn’t even ask him to expand before you surmised that he couldn’t – talk about judging people (even though earlier you said “I make no moral judgments either way” – yeah right. And yes, you can twist your arguments whichever way you want, but it is pretty obvious, you don’t give much of a shit about anything

        • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 10:12 pm

Your little mate? Name calling? Wow. I mean … wow.

If I could be bothered (and p’raps I will) I could list the name you and your decent fellah have called me and put it up against ‘your little mate’. It would an interesting comparison.

I think you’ll find it’s the other way around – you can try and weasel out of it as much as you like, but you are coming across loud and clear

                • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 10:51 pm

Haha. I never hide. I am exactly as you see me. Stright forward, honest (often to a fault) and I never weasel. Never.

Whereas you have hidden behind a false persona for a very long time. I have always been in the light (on here) – now you are too.

        • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 10:23 pm

You are unravelling before my eyes, and it’s not pretty. Bullet points might make it easier for you:
          1. My moral judgments comment was in relation to a particlar article posted by Cas. You may wish to trap me by falsely extrapolating that comment to every comment I have ever made. If it makes you feel clever.

Educate yourself. Look into charity. You know – what it is and why it’s an important part of any caring society. Then if you still want to make inane statements you’ve read on a protest placard well, be my guest.

            • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 10:07 pm

Most of us care. In fact I’d say we all care. I suspect we all do what we can to help, whenever and wherever we can.

It’s just that we don’t have ta burning desire to blow our own trumpets and tell everyo e how wonderful we are.

And we’d prefer not to have you social warriors claiming the ‘social justice’ moral highground and accuse us of not caring, attacking us for not caring about the things you tell us we should, and calling us names when we speak up.

              • Sid Trotter November 13, 2017 at 10:09 pm

Why do you keep attempting to hijack my conversations? I answered a question posed by waddle, and you jump in. I asked a questiin of Frontwheel2, and you jumped in.

Did they ask for your help or are you their self appointed spokeman?

I don’t mind either way but it is a little peculiar.

                  • Sid Trotter November 13, 2017 at 10:36 pm

I think it’d you that have unravelled in glorious technicolour.

                    1. My moral judgments comment was in relation to a particlar article posted by Cas. You may wish to trap me by falsely extrapolating that comment to every comment I have ever made. If it makes you feel clever.

Explain what you meant by your comments, you clearly make ‘moral’ judgments on what I say

                    2. My suggestion that Frontwheel2 wouldn’t accept my invitation to expand on his silly ‘no ned for charity’ comment was based on an earlier question I’d asked him, which he refused to answer. I think it’s fair to surmise that someone won’t answer a question because they can’t.

You didn’t ask him a question, but I’m sure he’ll answer – you just made a snide comment – as usual

As to the rest of your repugnant judgment about me and what I care about, well actually, it’s par for the nasty, snarling liberal course.

Is that not a judgment in itself – “I’m part of a snarling liberal course” – you have no fecking idea – and my repugnant judgment of you – you’ve said you don’t respect a woman’s right to choose – so you judge all women who make choices – its not rocket science.

                    • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 11:05 pm

                      Nope. Wrong on all counts.

I clearly meant I made no moral judgments as regards the article. Clearly.

I have explained the reason I posed the question to FW2 in the way I did. If you hadn’t been so desperate to leap to his defence you might have discovered why.

Your continued judgment of me is repugnant. I have NEVER made any statement attacking a woman’s right to choose, or (the frankly wierd) extrapolation to women making choices. Show me where I did.

As to my judgment of you? It’s borne out by your very own comments. It’s actually more of an observation than a judgme t.

  • Thommo November 13, 2017 at 8:02 pm

What a toilet of a country this is. Poverty wages, food banks and idiots feeding their kids on Coke and Doritos. In days gone by we’d have dealt with this politically with powerful unions and a labour party that actually represented the interests of workers. Now we’re reduced to thinking a bag of crappy groceries is the best way forward.

If you think poverty and economic decline is not a great thing then get these imbeciles out of power and stick this Brexit garbage in the bin.

It will be an odd WC without them for sure, and a more boring one

  • Lilywhite November 13, 2017 at 7:37 pm

As a youngster, many of my favorite Tottenham and England matches were taped onto VHS so I could enjoy them over and over again, ie) Spurs/Anderlect, Italia ’90, etc. I don’t recall who recorded them, me or my old man’s mates, but many matches were followed by a patchwork of horrendously boring Italian football. Now that’s walking football for the 80’s.

  • OrganicPaper November 13, 2017 at 7:29 pm

This should be the norm, not just football but any big business. Its absolutely commendable but a shame it has to be exceptional enough to be mentioned at all.
Football stadia often sits in the parts of towns and cities at the lower end of the economic scale so it certainly does burn a bright juxtaposition to the glaring wealth of clubs at the top of the tree.
I actually think a lot of clubs community engagement and charitable work is pretty good. Even at the lower league level, where clubs are barely surviving themselves still recognise their importance in their wider communities. This is in part why it was so important for us to redevelop WHL and retain our roots, rather than move even a few miles up the road.

About to embark on a voyage of discovery.

Before I gave up meat the only vegetables I ate were potatoes, peas and (raw) carrots. Vegetarianism/veganism is a far from restrictive practise — it opens up a whole world of wonderful options.

      • The Good The Bad and the Spurtsty 💋 November 13, 2017 at 7:22 pm

I can’t do the vegan thing, I haven’t the time or money.

I do understand (sort of) and feel the issues relating to the exploitation of animals but I’m not convinced that using some animal products for some things is entirely wrong.

I don’t want to eat meat and as someone who considers himself an animal lover I’ve felt hypocritical doing so for a while.

I’m eating more grains, pulses and fish. Not for health or anything quare like that.

So, no eaty meaty. But what about wool and leather for shoes? And dairy products if sourced ethically?

I’ve always bought free range eggs although I’ve banished lately. But cheese?! And milk (Yes, I saw the video that some bugger put up on here)?!

I can’t wear rice protein shoes to the office (should I ever go to an office).

It was on a tape my mate gave me around 91 92. I distinctly remember one of the tunes on it was satin storm, which cas sent a link for ( what we’re the odds) but the one I really really want is the one with the raw silk sample. I’m now confused, it may well have been the PKA tune and my pea brain remembers it differently but thanks anyway

You might benefit from reading what I write now and again.

You need to read what I’ve written. This has been covered extensively.

If you want to ignore what I have commented very plainly about – in order to drag me down a rabbit hole – you’re only kidding yourself. I cannot be coerced and you won’t be able to invent an argument I’ll rise to.

This is a fair point and all clubs should have a social conscience as they do have a negative impact in their respective areas just as they fella says.

However, clubs are big business, and around virtually every club are other big businesses, usually ones that don’t pay the correct amount of taxes (legally but even so don’t pay percentage wise the same as me and you) and a lot of these are food type shops, McDonald’s, Iceland, Sainsburys, Tesco, Starbucks etc.

Can’t they supply food to the local communities? They won’t have to ‘colkect’ It, they have it already in their premises.

I know for a fact they dump food by the ton for varying reasons, so can’t the food that is edible be donated?

Of course not, that’s not tax deductible.

Morally all big business should contribute to their communities.

All they’re doing by ‘collecting’ it is taking it from people with next to nothing and giving it to people with nothing.
They are a conduit, they aren’t supplying it.

    Liverpool are a conduit.
They aren’t paying for this good in these food banks.

    That’s a massive difference.

If they put their hands into their coffers they (all big business) could then rightfully blow their own trumpets.

Until then I find it patronising.
