Good morning fight fans and welcome to the FA cup afterparty.

Newport came, saw, and did their conkers but in the final analysis Spurs and the Wembley yardage was just too much for them. Again, it befits to commend the Exiles for giving it a proper go under beyond challenging circumstances.

To call Sissoko’s goal cruel is an understatement. Thanks too to Spurs for not only getting the job done with a  jumble sale assortment of a starting XI but for providing just the right level of comedy to hold our attention.

Anyone feverishly preparing their ‘So now do you admit you were wrong?!’ speech for when we win the FA cup this summer may wish to question just how seriously a football team takes being a football team with Moussa Sissoko as its most played player and Fernando Llorente as its second striker.

I’ve held back on beating the former Swansman up, but last night was neat opportunity for him to pay a little room and board off against mob halfway down League Two. But he was abysmal.

Sissoko was textbook Sissoko and his ‘goal’ was straight out of the Darren Bent Bumper Book Of Belters.

Spurs routinely suffer when the best XI is tinkered with and last night was no exception. Player ratings and stuff to follow.

If we can’t play on a pitch once in a blue moon that a lower league team plays on every week then we may as well give up football right now.
When I was a lad we used to play on razor blades in bare feet. Southern softies 😜

  • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 8:50 pm

I know one or more of you will know this, but isn’t it down to the match officials to pass a pitch fit for play? And presumably if a ground fails to pass one or more inspections, there are consequences? Which are enforceable by the football authorities?

    • SeattleSpursGuy February 8, 2018 at 8:58 pm

      Here’s the rule:

Pitch Inspection Guidelines for Clubs and Referees

      1. The following guidelines apply to those clubs who have control of their own grounds. Where clubs use local authority pitches, or are tenants, and the landlords’ decision is that the fixture may not take place this decision cannot be over-ruled. However, if the landlord is happy for the match to take place the referee may decide otherwise if he/she considers the ground unfit or weather conditions unsafe. Clubs are reminded however that they must take every precaution to ensure that their ground is in a fit playing condition.

      2. When the local weather conditions are known to be extreme (e.g. prolonged severe frost, clear water logging or heavy snow) then the game can be postponed at the discretion of the League following consultation with the League Secretary. Should the League agree to an early postponement under such circumstances there will be no requirement for a pitch inspection.

      3. In all other circumstances a local Referee should be called in to make a decision. As a general rule decisions as to whether the game is able to go ahead should not be made before mid-day. However, when weather conditions are very poor, and unlikely to improve, a decision may be made on the morning of the game. In the event of no Referee being available to carry out the inspection advice is to be sought from the League Secretary.

      4. In determining the suitability of grounds for play the Referee who is making the inspection should consider the following:

      • Whether or not the ground (playing area) is dangerous (e.g. ice / frost).
      • Whether or not that the spectator standing areas are dangerous (e.g. ice / frost).
      • Whether or not conditions are or could turn farcical.
      • The views of the Home Club Groundsman in terms of local knowledge and draining capabilities in the event of standing water.
      • The existing condition of the playing surface in conjunction with the prevailing weather conditions and local forecast.
      • Inspect the ground thoroughly – use a ball, and players if necessary/available.
      • Fog creates its’ own problems – check forecast.
      • When dealing with such elements as frost or ice – remember that the highest temperature of the day is usually around mid-day. Get a forecast if necessary of the projected temperature for the time when the match is due to conclude.
      • The manpower available to the Home Club to carry out any necessary work to make the ground playable.
      • The time the visiting Club are due to commence their journey.

      5. If the ground is declared fit and the away club travel to the venue, then only in exceptional circumstances should the match Referee reverse the decision.

      6. If an early inspection has not been carried out and the match Referee arrives at the ground to find the playing conditions in doubt due to unexpected deterioration in the weather, he should first consider as many of the above points before committing himself to a decision.

      • SeattleSpursGuy February 8, 2018 at 9:00 pm

I do like “Whether or not conditions are or could turn farcical.”

        • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 9:07 pm

Those rules don’t seem to be very specific to the condition of the actual surface, more how it might respond to severe weather conditions. Typically amateurish blather.

    This discussion about Rochdale pitch.

Not every club has funds for even the basic facilities and although there’s money being shovelled at the premier league, the rest of the league can get fucked it seems.

I remember travelling up to watch slurs away at Oldham on a Thursday night in the premier league in the 90’s towards the end of the season whereby spurs were embroiled along with Everton and Oldham and a couple of others and spurs won 0-2 with vinny sideways scoring the important second goal enabling spurs to avoid relegation.

The pitch did not have one blade of green leafage on the fucka and had more sand on it than Blackpool beach and this was after they’d dig up their artificial pitch from the 80’s (that qpr and Luton also had).

If the pitch is that bad, then nobody whether league 1 or 2 or premier league should play on it, and not just spurs.

Today Poch is going to meet baldy to ask THFC to loan Rochdale the money to fix their pitch. How’s that gonna go?

    • SeattleSpursGuy February 8, 2018 at 7:29 pm

Poch said: “I think the FA need to assess how the pitch is and then take a decision on if it’s good for the FA Cup, the players and the teams to play on this type of pitch in that condition.“I don’t think it helps football. I don’t know why what happened happened on the pitch but it’s true that, through the picture, I think it’s not a pitch in a condition to play football. “It’s about providing a safe place to play for the players. I think it’s a big risk to play on a pitch like this, if the picture gave us the accurate state.”

Rather than loaning Rochdale money–which I don’t know if the FA would allow since we’re playing them–I think Poch wants the pitch declared unplayable and the match moved.

      • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 8:02 pm

I think Llorente is a decent player. Actually a good one. We just have to play to his strengths. If we signed Messi and pumped the ball to him from the back, he’d probably struggle. Crosses, the odd long ball (like the one we scored from against MU) would be good for him and make us less predictable.

  • Willie! February 8, 2018 at 3:34 pm

Sissoko’s pinball goal would have been a goal (for Lamela) even if the Newport defender didn’t put it in his own net. He was in the process of being nutmegged, with Lamela right there for a tap-in.

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 3:39 pm

Maybe. I thought there was another defender between the ball and Lamela?
      What’s your point?

      • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 3:41 pm

No, if it got past the defender who put it in his own net, it would have got to Lamela. What’s your point?! 😀

        • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 3:45 pm

Without watching it again, I thought I recalled two defenders between Sissoko and Lamela, not one. But I might well be wrong.

          • Caspurs♿️ February 8, 2018 at 3:52 pm

            Yep, you’re wrong.

          • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 3:54 pm

There were, the ball got past the first one taking a slight deflection off him, then hit the second defender who put the ball in the net. If it got past the second defender Lamela was in line to put it away.

            Highlights here.

As I said during the match on here last night, I thought Llorente played a text book target man centre forward job.

Unfortunately the second half he decided to play like tommy cooper on the piano.

He can certainly play it, but decided not to for comedic purposes.

Lamela played well (yes Newport are fourth tier) but he was superb nonetheless.

Overall, it was a decent win in a game in which spurs were on a hiding to nothing, damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

    That’ll do pig, that’ll do.

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 3:34 pm

  • VincentianMagic February 8, 2018 at 2:44 pm

Have to admit that Sissy and Llorente are definitely two of the worst signings I’ve ever experienced in my time as a Spurs supporter. Sure, we’ve had some wrong-uns, but these two in terms of money paid and status in the game (as two full internationals in top European teams) take the biscuit.

My heart sinks a little whenever either starts.

Sissy just doesn’t look like a PL player – his modus operandi is to get the ball, stop and pass backwards. Llorente has no pace, no movement, his touch is average and for such a big player, is very un-dominant in the air.

If we had two quality players in their position I have no doubt we would finish top four.

Harsh, maybe, but that’s how I see it.

    • SpurAndy 🍒π February 8, 2018 at 3:24 pm

Agree with Sissoko but I think Llorente is a player who only thrives on regular playing time. He has been successful at other clubs and I’d imagine that was when he was regularly playing and with tactics that suit his abilities.

      • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 3:28 pm

Which is unfortunate if correct. He won’t get regular games except in dire need.

      • TheCincinnatiYid February 8, 2018 at 3:28 pm

P’haps, but he is getting older. Maybe Swansea squeezed the last juice out of what is now a lemon. He looks horribly immobile out on the pitch. Spends more time running in one spot than any other player I have ever seen.

  • UnkleTaff February 8, 2018 at 2:37 pm

The stupidity behind the idea that Levy buys the players and expects the coach to work with them is surpassed only by the stupidity of those who actually believe this is the case.

Maybe the NDA’s are to keep THFC’s intellectual property from prying eyes. Been reading down blog about the constant wonder that is Levy and his transfer philosophy/policy/cluster f*ck.

Levy is a guy who seems to be the smartest guy in any room that he enters. So it stands to reason that he also knows more about football talent than anyone else. So why not spend 30 mil on Sissy? Daniel knows best.

Why Porky continues to play him I haven’t figured out yet. Although there may be a Spurs rule that there must always be one player on the field with no first touch. Sissy rivals the late unlamented Adebayor in inability to stop the ball with that first contact.

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 2:42 pm

Not the late Adebayor; erstwhile is perhaps the better adjective.

We’ve had the second most attempts on goal this season behind Man City. For the past two seasons we’ve created the most chances. So excluding Poch’s first season we’ve been the most creative side in the PL – FACT.

    • Camus February 8, 2018 at 1:18 pm

This is a cool stat, but deceptive.
Under AVB, we used to take 29 shots to score vs Fulham, and only then through a Bale worldie.

    • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 1:20 pm

In my estimation when the press works or the counter, the field is more open.often we score in clusters.
Often its closed and we are pushing the ball sideways keeping great possession but not going anywhere.
This is what I was talking about.
      Do you have those numbers?

      • Camus February 8, 2018 at 1:26 pm

We should try the Top Gun Maverick approach…
“I’ll going to hit the brakes, he’ll fly right by…!”

So… We keep possession but lure the opposition into our half by knocking it about the back four. Toby gets the ball and Moura is already running… Toby knocks a 40-yarder into Moura’s path and like a whippet he’s on it, fleeces the centre-backs and buries it into the City net.

        Beat that for tactics, Poch!

      • mattspurs February 8, 2018 at 1:39 pm

It’s football not basketball. You seem to believe there’s some kind of footballing utopia where players create endless chances. Even the very best teams only score an average of about 2.5 goals a game, that’s not even a goal every half hour. Sadly you have to wait quite a bit and sit through all the sideways passing bit.

So your theory is that we score more when a team is less organised and they’ve got fewer defenders in place? I’d agree. Problem is, how is it possible to dictate the way the opposition plays? Hugo could certainly distribute the ball much better both in terms of accuracy and speed but you constantly go on about lacking a creative player even though we create more chances than anybody else in the league.

        • Ronwol196061 February 8, 2018 at 1:50 pm

Yes we find other ways to goal…its true. The wing backs get forward but we lack creativity down the middle. Why havent we strengthened this area before? Other teams at the top have more than us that way.
Its lacking. This will give us a plan B when its tight.
Dembele is great as the CM but durectly creates almist nothing. There is the system and the discipline and then there us induvidual ingenuity in creating.

          • Accy February 8, 2018 at 1:53 pm

If De Jong comes from Ajax in the summer, we’ll have a bit more playmaking ability from CM. It’s the one deal I’d like to happen.

Going back in for Maddison should be a priority as well.

We’re going to have to bring in one or two home growns next window.

            • Ronwol196061 February 8, 2018 at 1:57 pm

            • VincentianMagic February 8, 2018 at 2:49 pm

I think Maddison is worth a punt. We should also find another dominant CM so that we can rotate Dembele/Wanyama a little more.

Hopefully we also find a proper mobile CF capable of playing up top/alongside Kane.

  • Camus February 8, 2018 at 12:57 pm

I was just thinking to myself, what happened to the Sissoko of the Toon?
Wasn’t he a beast there when he first arrived, although I know the story of how it tailed off for him and he left under a cloud.

So I found this – if anyone has 5mins to waste, have a look.
There are a few goals at the start, and the 4th one is a beauty, but then it tails off into a series of blind alley runs.

I didn’t make it past the 3-min mark – I challenge anyone to get further than that.
I think Mysterious Stranger is right – we didn’t sign a good footballer.
He is what he is, and that’s pretty much just a unit on legs.

And there’s the conundrum. Levy a man who squeezes the pips to get the last drop but happy to shell out £30m on him. So some will say its because Levy’s not a football man he doesn’t recognise talent. But I think undeniably he is a good business man and good business man rarely just makes a punt on a whim without advice from experts. So the conundrum is Sissoko? A moment of temporary insanity, an expert advising who has another motive, a special deal with Ashley? It’s a mystery.

For a ten minute spell Sissoko seemed to want to join in and managed to hit a couple of passes which didn’t sell his team mates short. But it didn’t last and he resumed ambling/shuffling about to no effect.

Sometimes he calls for the ball for no discernable reason, because he invariably returns it to the same player.

    • gloster1861 February 8, 2018 at 11:36 am

Last night he got the ball played to him on the left touchline, and I thought, go on, knock it past the defender into the space behind and use your pace and strength to ‘transition defence into attack'(©Poch) and make ground.

Of course he just passed back.

      • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:39 am

        ha ha ©Poch

  • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 11:11 am

Llorente was an excellent goalscorer at Bilbao and notch quite a few at Swansea
Bent scored a ton at Charlton
Sigg scored a ton at Swansea

Its not just about the strikers its something else going on.

Kane for the longest time created his own goals out of nothing.

We have had one playmaker for the longest time and his biggest job I think is to block the lanes of defences coming out. Creativity is last on the list for Poch. Mouras fitness is more importsnt than his ball control and creativity.
Poch just cant rate the supply that much and is more concerned with filling the holes.

    • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 11:13 am

Bent has nothing to do with Poch
      Sorry.

      Ron this is Llorente’s highlights/goals

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DK0xtSzbLo

He’s not a top striker. He’s just tall. His 15 goals mean nothing – we should have scouted him. We clearly didn’t.

      • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 11:20 am

That’s how you scout them properly, YouTube highlight reels. 🙄

        • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:21 am

erm… I’m not in charge of scouting at THFC. What’s your point?

          • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 11:24 am

You’re the one claiming “we clearly didn’t scout him” and presented a YouTube highlight reel as some kind of evidence. “Look!”.

            • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:25 am

The evidence is we signed him on deadline day in a 24 hour turn around panic scenario.

              • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:27 am

Sissoko was exactly the same kind of purchase.

Swansea/Newcastle is a bit different from Real Madrid.

                  • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 11:30 am

Real Madrid didn’t want him. So not that different.

                    • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:33 am

I respect your opinion Mys, the issue for me is our transfer strategy. We hear endless stories about our scouting setup and who the latest person to come in and revamp the network is – and then Daniel wakes up on deadline day, comes into the office and says, “right, who can we get today, then?” – having had 3 months of the summer to have sorted something out.

The manager then ends up with players that don’t fit the system or are shite or both.

                    • Harry Hotspur February 8, 2018 at 11:40 am

Anyone disputing the living fuckjob that is our transfer business hasn’t caught on that the only constant factor is Levy. It really is that simple…

                      “We hear endless stories”.

                      yes

                    • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 11:54 am

                      Here’s the thing though, Accy.

We can’t buy players like Batshuayi to play second fiddle to Kane. Batshuayi wants to get paid and be the big fish – that’s why he fucked off to Dortmund. We never had a chance before Chelsea signed him, nor after. Same with Dembélé who went to Celtic – wanting to get paid (more than we wanted to pay him), and be the big fish playing regularly. So trying to buy a backup who is prepared to sit it out and get the occasional chance or a run if Kane gets injured limits the selection pool of suitable candidates to a large degree. Tell the truth I’ve never been a fan of Llorente, but I do see some logic to why we signed a player like him for the reasons outlined above.

I agree it would generally be preferable for us to sign players before the last week/day of the window (particularly this winds me up in the summer), as it strikes me as being penny wise and pound foolish. Trying to save a few hundred grand on wages, or transfer fees by dragging things out etc., often to the detriment of squad preparation for that season. I also didn’t want us to sign Sissoko at all. I made that abundantly clear when we signed him, as did many others. That was a clear fuckjob. Anyone who was seduced by his “brilliant Euro 2016” couldn’t have possibly seen him play much. The fact all of his “strong runs” yielded no end product then on his good days speaks volumes about him as the player he is – he’s the same as the player we signed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 11:33 am

My point was more about supply.
Can we all agree its lacking.
Supply makes it easier or lack of it puts pressure in the forward players.
Moura can add to the supply but with Poch focus him on pressing with supply being secondary?

      • Freund or Foe February 8, 2018 at 11:42 am

Harry Kane did not create his own goals out of nothing for the longest time.
Since Poch has arrived at Spurs, only ManC have scored more goals than us.
We’ve struggled to break teams down at certain points during this season, so having another, different creative option like Moura is good, but who the fuck are you or me to say that he is ready and should be playing over Poch? It’s a ludicrous suggestion.

        • Harry Hotspur February 8, 2018 at 11:46 am

          Recall Marcus Onomah!

          • MysteriousStranger February 8, 2018 at 11:55 am

            Josh Edwards too.

        • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 12:06 pm

Im not saying he should FOF. Im talking about the lack of creativity at Tottenham and have duscussed when the pressing works and tge counter works we score bunches and at other times struggle. Our strikers have generally struggled in a sense of being cut off from supply at times when defences are tight. Often a when we gavent moved the ball up the field quick enough (often when players are met with lots of coverage they shoot the ball around to keep possession and go nowhere)
It take ceeativity to break through. Pochs teams have lacked tgat (sure score in bunches when its open)

        • ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 8, 2018 at 12:09 pm

The suggestion is not using Moura now but rather Pochs lack of players coming into create.
He makes sure the defence is solid
Tge lanes are covered but the attack has lacked supply thats all

      • mattspurs February 8, 2018 at 12:59 pm

We’ve had the second most attempts on goal this season behind Man City. For the past two seasons we’ve created the most chances. So excluding Poch’s first season we’ve been the most creative side in the PL – FACT.

    • mattspurs February 8, 2018 at 12:53 pm

Bent’s scoring record wasn’t that bad – he scored 12 PL goals in one season, something Defoe only did twice

  • caveman February 8, 2018 at 10:55 am

Cannot believe how shit Llorente is. Where are the reserve games that could keep these lazy fuckers half match fit. Sissoko also, he looks like his confidence is shot to pieces.

    • Camus February 8, 2018 at 11:12 am

I missed the game ‘coz something came up.
Did the goal not even raise Sissoko’s spirits?

  • Accy February 8, 2018 at 10:48 am

Transfermarkt have the transfer fee for Llorente was £13.59m.

They also have the actual figure for Janssen as £19.89m.

They also have the actual figure for Sissoko as £31.5m

That’s £65m we may as well have set fire to

    • Harry Hotspur February 8, 2018 at 11:06 am

You sir, have just highlighted the very kernel of the ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ philosophy that dogs this fucking club.

Add N’Jie, N’NofakinCop and all at the other ‘speculative’ punts that deranged midget has taken and you could double that £65m in the space of just a few seasons.

      • Accy February 8, 2018 at 11:20 am

I omitted the N’boys because we got some money back on Njie. Nkoudou, we’ll probably get our money back.

No one wants to buy Janssen
No one wants to buy Sissoko
No one wants to buy Llorente

        • Jim,Newry Spur. February 8, 2018 at 12:10 pm

They will be sold because two are strikers, someone will take a chance, Sissoko will be sold because football is full of idiots but we will lose money of course.

      • Camus February 8, 2018 at 11:21 am

        That’s shocking business.
Other clubs also do shocking business, even moneybags Roman’s lot.
But still – it wouldn’t have been hard to spend £65mill on Sadio Mane and, ooh, I dunno… Anyone except Sissoko?

Even Dwight Gayle would’ve been a better option than either Janssen or Llorente.
