Bert’s Signing An Extension

By The Boy -

You live and learn. I only discovered this morning that Spurjan’s full name is Jan Bert Lieve Vertonghen. How did that go under the radar?

Gladys mentioned recently that Jan and Toby would both be signing contract extensions. Jan originally signed on Jun 8th 2012, eventually engaging a 2 year extension option in 2016.

His new deal will wrap him up in the Lilywhite until 2020, which in the scheme of things is a positive.

Given the comparative hysteria that some of you have taken to greeting these things with, it’s worth pointing out yet again that the modern football contract is less about tying the player down, but more about maximising the value of a player who’s had his poor tickle head turned.

Getting all the players on the same page contactually is undoubtedly a good thing. But the cold reality is that these players firstly need to survive the Wembley nonsense and then – and then – they will want to see tangible football progress.

You can brand you average footballer as being a bit thick, but most are in possession a rather keen low animal cunning.

Footballers are not Flat Earthers content to wander around boring people senseless waffling on about progress that can only be found on an investment company’s spreadsheets.

It’s all about money and status. In fact, money, status and debauchery. The Premier League is the modern day Roman Empire, eh?

If money and status at the New Destination™ aren’t forthcoming then they’ll be gone.
